Simply go to the UMKC A t h l e t i c s home page at: LAST TIME OUT The UMKC women's basketball team lost its Mid-Continent Conference match-up at We s t e r n Illinois, 58-40, on Tuesday, Jan. 11 in Macomb, Ill. Junior forward Liz Obrecht and senior guard Katie Houlehan led the Kangaroos in double figures. Obrecht led UMKC (5-9 overall, 2-2 in the Mid-Con) with 13 points while Houlehan added 11 points in the loss. Freshman forward Marta Waalen pulled down a team high eight boards. The Kangaroos started off the game on a 6-0 run in the first two minutes but Western Illinois came back with a 6-3 run of its own, capped off by a three-pointer by Rachel Reed just before the media timeout. The Kangaroos never led again. Western Illinois (8-5, 3-0) was led by Zane Teilane's double-double (10 points-10 rebounds). Jessica Cook contributed a team high 14 points while Rita Castans added 12. THE COACHES Bo Overton is 5-9 in his first year as head coach at UMKC. He comes to Kansas City after spending the last six seasons at Oklahoma. While with the Sooners they compiled a record, winning three Big 12 championships and appearing in five NCAA Tournaments. In 2002 the Sooners played for the National Championship game. Keith Freeman is in his eleventh season as the head coach of the Valparaiso Crusaders. He is the all-time winningest coach at Valpo and in the Mid-Continent Conference. SWINNEY RECREATION CENTER UMKC calls Swinney Recreation Center its primary home court. Since the 1,500-seat on-campus facility opened to the p u b l i c in 1987, UMKC has fashioned an (.553) all-time record. The Kangaroos are (.615) at Swinney over the last three seasons. SCORING FROM DOWNTOWN The Kangaroos play two regular season games this year at historic Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City, Kansas State on Dec. 11 and Southern Utah on Jan. 6. UMKC sports a (.627) all-time record in games played at the Auditorium. The last win for the Kangaroos at Municipal Auditorium was an victory over Southern Utah in the conference home opener on Jan. 6, THE SERIES Valparaiso leads the all-time series with UMKC Valpo holds a 6-4 edge against the Kangaroos at Swinney Rec Center. The Kangaroos won the first of the three meetings last season with a victory at home. However, Valpo got its revenge as they took the next two meetings, including the win in the semi-final round of the Mid-Con tournament (50-48 on Feb. 14, 2004 and on March 8, 2004). KANGAROOS ON TELEVISION U M K C will make four appearances on Metro Sports this season. The next game on the schedule to be broadcast is the February 21 contest against Oral Roberts in Swinney Rec C e n t e r. Metro Sports will also broadcast the first round of the Mid-Continent Conference tournament to be held in Tu l s a, Okla. on March 5-8. SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS Valparaiso is 9-5 overall and 3-0 in the Mid-Continent Conference thus far. The defending champions are a perfect 5-0 on the road this season. Leading the way for the Crusaders is reigning Mid-Con Player-of-the-Week senior Jenna Stangler, who is averaging 15.8 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per game. Valpo is 6-0 when outrebounding opponents and 8-0 when shooting better than its opposition this season.

15 UMKC at Western Illinois BO OVERTON Head Coach, First Season (Oklahoma 83) Bo Overton, a former assistant basketball coach at the University of Oklahoma, was named women's basketball coach at UMKC June 7, Prior to his appointment at UMKC, Overton spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Oklahoma, where the Sooners compiled a record. During Overton's tenure, Oklahoma won three Big 12 Conference regular season titles. OU also advanced to the NCAA Tournament five times, including an appearance in the 2002 NCAA National Championship game. Overton, the starting point guard for the Sooners in the early 1980s, is considered one of the top recruiters in the country. The native of Ada, Okla., worked with all phases of the Oklahoma women's basketball program. Overton began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for the Oklahoma men's basketball program in , followed by a year each as an assistant coach with the Continental Basketball Association's Pensacola (Fla.) Tornadoes ( ) and Oral Roberts University ( ). He then landed his first head coaching position at Murray State Junior College in Tishomingo, Okla. After a two-year stay at MSJC, Overton returned to Oral Roberts to assist coach Ken Trickey. He remained with the Golden Eagles for two seasons before accepting an assistant coach position at Southwest Texas State under current Kansas State men's head coach Jim Wooldridge. Overton's and Wooldridge's working relationship extended over five years and two institutions as the pair teamed up for one year at Southwest Texas and four years at Louisiana Tech ( ). During his four seasons as a player for the Sooners ( ), Overton led the team in assists his final three seasons and currently ranks third on the school's all-time assists list with 517. He also ranks second on the Sooners' career list in free throw percentage after he converted 85.2 percent of his shots (184-of-216). He concluded his collegiate playing career by leading Oklahoma to the NCAA Mideast Regional and a second-place Big Eight Conference finish. Overton became the 22nd player in OU men's basketball history to be drafted professionally. He was selected by the Phoenix Suns in 1983 NBA Draft. He was a four-year letterwinner at Ada High School, earning Oklahoma Coaches, Tulsa World and Daily Oklahoman Player-of-the-Year recognition in Overton was also a member of the McDonald's and National High School Coaches Association All-America squads. He received the prestigious Jim Thorpe Award in 1979, which is presented annually to the top athlete in each sport at the Oklahoma state high school championships. Overton is a 1983 graduate of Oklahoma, earning a bachelor's degree in communications. What They Are Saying About Bo Overton: "Bo has an amazing feel for the game.
