The Spiders finished last season with a record, 8-4 at home. Delaware, a post-season NIT participant in 2002, finished 23-7, 11-3 in away contests last season. This marks the fourth match-up between the two schools, with Delaware holding a 2-1 advantage. THE HISTORY The first meeting between the two schools occured on January 6, 1984 as the Blue Hens defeated the Spiders in Newark, Delaware. Richmond returned to Newark in 1992 and evened the record at 1-1 with an victory. The teams last met on January 6, 1995 in the Robins Center when Delaware left with a win. THE COACHES Richmond head coach Joanne Boyle is beginning her first season on the sidelines for the Spiders and her first season as a head coach. Boyle served as an assistant at Duke for nine years and during her tenure the Blue Devils compiled a record. Delaware head coach Tina Martin is entering her seventh season with the Blue Hens and has compiled a record during her tenure. Prior to Delaware, Martin served as an assistant at Seton Hall University for nine years. 2 FROM DUKE BLUE TO SPIDER RED Richmond head coach Joanne Boyle is entering her first season on the sidelines for the Spiders. Boyle served as an assistant at Duke University, her alma mater, for nine years. During that time, the Blue Devils compiled an overall record of and made two Final Four appearances. Duke earned four consecutive ACC regular-season championships and won three consecutive ACC tournament championships. Boyle was a four-year member of the women s basketball team at Duke and served as captain during her senior year. WELCOME ABOARD In addition to Boyle, the Spiders welcome two new assistants to the women s basketball staff. Lindsay Gottlieb comes to Richmond after most recently serving as an assistant at the University of New Hampshire for one year. Prior to New Hampshire, she served in the same capacity at Syracuse University for two years. Gottlieb is a graduate of Brown University and was a member of the women s basketball team. Terry Wilkins served as an assistant coach for the men s basketball team at his alma mater, Washington and Jefferson College, for three years before coming to Richmond. Wilkins, one of the most distinguished players in school history, was a two-time Most Valuable Player of the Presidents Athletic Conference and earned First Team All-PAC honors in three of his four seasons. He is second on the school s alltime scoring list with 1,410 points and helped the team reach the Division III Elite Eight in RICHMOND IN Richmond finished last season with a overall record and an 8-8 conference record in their inaugural season of Atlantic 10 competition. The Spiders tied with Dayton for second in the Western Division. SEASON OPENERS Richmond has a record in season openers. The Spiders kicked off the season with a loss at Virginia Tech on November 16. Richmond last opened the season at home on November 19, 1999, when they were defeated by Marist PLAYING THE BEST Based on the preseason AP Top-25 poll, the Spiders will possibly face three Top 25 opponents and two other teams receiving votes. At the Colorado State Holiday Classic, Richmond will take on 25th-ranked UC-Santa Barbara in their first game and could face host Colorado State who ranks 19th. The Spiders play two games against Atlantic 10 foe George Washington, who is picked 21st. Junior Ebony Tanner led the Spiders with 23 points and five rebounds while teammate Kate Flavin recorded a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Amber Goppert was named to the league s second team and the All-Defensive team, while teammate Ebony Tanner was selected to the conference third team. Newcomer Agi Kiersz was chosen to the All-Rookie team. AN INTERNATIONAL AFFAIR The Spiders have two players from outside the United States on their roster this year. Sophomore Natalie Tokgoz hails from Richmond, British Columbia in Canada. Freshman Agi Kiersz comes to the United States from Ludwigsburg, Germany and has played on German National teams for the past nine years. PUTTING POINTS ON THE BOARD Last season, Richmond led the Atlantic 10 and ranked 10th in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 78.5 points per game. The Spiders ranked second in the Atlantic 10 in field goal percentage, connecting on 44.6% of their shots. CALIFORNIA DREAMIN Richmond welcomes two players from the Golden State of California. Freshman Araceli Gil hails from Santa Barbara and classmate Britney Hamilton comes from Chatsworth, located just an hour and half southeast. IT S RAINING THREES The Spiders were among the top in the nation in their three-point shooting last season. Richmond tied for 23rd with 6.7 three-point field goals made per game and ranked 25th with a three-point field goal percentage of Their single-game three-point field goal percentage of 71.4 against Virginia Commonwealth tied for third highest in the country. ALL-CONFERENCE HONOREES Richmond returns three players who received all-conference accolades following the season. Amber Goppert was chosen to both the third team all-atlantic 10 and the All-Defensive team. Ebony Tanner earned third team All-Conference honors and Kate Flavin was named to the All-Rookie team. GRAND THEFT As a sophomore, Amber Goppert led Richmond and the Atlantic 10 conference in steals, recording 78. Teammate Kate Flavin made a career-high nine steals against Duquesne on February 1, 2002, which placed her among the top 20 for single-game steals. The Spiders tied a school record against Duquesne when they posted 21 steals, an accomplishment only achieved four times in Richmond s past. DOMINATING IN THE PAINT Senior center Ebony Tanner is one of three starters returning from a year ago. Last season, she pulled down a team-high 8.4 rebounds per game while averaging 12.1 points per game. She ranked among the conference s top five in both rebounding and blocked shots (40). Tanner recorded eight doubledoubles, including a 20-point, 13-rebound performance in Richmond s win over La Salle on January 25, WHERE TO NEXT? The Spiders take to the road for the week of Thanksgiving, playing Mount Saint Mary s College on November 26 in Emmitsburg, Md. before heading to New Jersey to participate in the Rutger s Coca-Cola Classic held November 30- December 1. The schedule includes 12 live game broadcasts and a weekly coach s radio show. Six of the games will air locally on WRNL- 910AM while all 12 will be available via the internet at RichmondSpiders.com. The coach s radio show will air Monday nights at 8:00 on WRNL beginning December 9. The broadcasts are presented by Franklin Federal Savings and Loan, which will serve as the exclusive title sponsor of all women s broadcasts. Matt Smith, UR 92, will handle play-by-play with former Spider captain Mollie McClure, UR 96, providing color commentary. Smith has been public address announcer for women s games at the Robins Center and currently serves as sideline reporter on Spider home and away football broadcasts. McClure, a Richmond native from Douglas Freeman High School, is a former assistant coach at William & Mary. LET THE SIGNING BEGIN In the early signing period, Kelly Roche and Christina Campion have both signed National Letters of Intent to join the Spiders for the basketball season. As a junior at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Roche averaged 17 points, 10 rebounds and four assists per game for coach Brian Giorgis. She was honored as an All-State selection in addition to earning All-League honors. She is ranked 40 th in the All-Star Girl s Report (ASGR) listing of Top Forwards in the class of After helping lead Our Lady of Lourdes to their fourth consecutive NYSPHSAA Class B Championship, the Lady Warriors finished the season with a Top-5 ranking. In the championship game against Comsewogue, Roche contributed 17 points, 12 rebounds and four steals in the victory. Campion averaged 17 points, 12 rebounds and four assists per game as a junior for The Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J. for coach Sean Casey. An All-State selection, she was invited to participate in the Nike Camp and was selected as a Nike All-American and an adidas All-American. She is ranked 23rd in the All-Star Girl s Report (ASGR) listing of Top Forwards in the class of As a junior, Campion helped lead the Falcons to a 17 th national ranking and in the pre-season poll, Peddie Girls Basketball is ranked seventh in the country. NEW FACES In Richmond s two tournament appearances this season, Rutger s Coca-Cola Classic and the Colorado State Holiday Classic, the Spiders have never faced any of their possible opponents. At Rutgers, Richmond will first face Northwestern and will take on either host Rutgers or Wagner.
