21 2006 game-by-game recaps GAME 1 RAVENS 27 BUCS 0 September 10, 2006 Raymond James Stadium (65,087) TAMPA The visiting Baltimore Ravens handed Tampa Bay its first home shutout since 1996 and the first shutout ever at Raymond James Stadium with a 27-0 victory in the 2006 season opener. The Ravens opened the game with an 80-yard drive that consumed over nine minutes of the first quarter, culminating with a four-yard touchdown run by RB Jamal Lewis. 22 GAME 2 FALCONS 14 BUCS 3 September 17, 2006 Georgia Dome (70,828) ATLANTA Tampa Bay s three-game winning streak against the Falcons came to an end as the Buccaneers opened their 2006 road schedule with a loss in Atlanta. The Falcons churned out 306 rushing yards, the most ever surrendered by a Buccaneers defense. For Tampa Bay, WR Joey Galloway tied his career high with nine receptions for 161 yards, the second-highest total of his career. Additionally, QB Chris Simms passed for a career-high 313 yards, the first 300-yard passing day of his career. Following a missed field goal by Tampa Bay and a pass interference penalty deep in Buccaneers territory, Atlanta took a 7-0 lead on a QB Michael Vick one-yard touchdown run. CB DeAngelo Hall s interception and return in Tampa Bay territory set up Atlanta s second score of the day as Vick found FB Fred McCrary on a four-yard touchdown pass for a 14-0 Falcons lead midway through the second quarter. Tampa Bay drove to the Atlanta four-yard line just before halftime, but had to settle for a 22- yard field goal by K Matt Bryant. Tampa Bay again had a chance to cut into the lead on the first drive of the second half, but Simms was intercepted at the Atlanta goal line. On Atlanta s ensuing possession, LB Derrick Brooks intercepted Vick and returned it 63 yards for a touchdown. However, the score was nullified because of an illegal block penalty on the return. The Buccaneers could not capitalize on the turnover as Bryant missed a 43-yard field goal. 23 GAME 3 PANTHERS 26 BUCS 24 September 24, 2006 Raymond James Stadium (65,423) TAMPA Tampa Bay erased a 17-point first half deficit, but K John Kasay s 46-yard field goal with two seconds remaining lifted the Panthers. QB Chris Simms accounted for one touchdown passing and one rushing, and DE Simeon Rice led the defensive effort as he recorded four tackles, including one sack, and two forced fumbles. Carolina wasted no time getting on the scoreboard after Simms was intercepted on his first pass attempt, and on the next play, Panthers QB Jake Delhomme found WR Keyshawn Johnson for a 31-yard touchdown reception. Carolina increased its lead to 10-0 near the end of the first quarter on Kasay s 51-yard field goal, his first of four field goals over 45 yards on the day. The lead was pushed to 17-0 early in the second quarter on Johnson s four-yard touchdown run. On the Buccaneers ensuing possession, Simms led the offense on a 10-play, 82-yard drive that culminated with an eight-yard touchdown pass to WR Joey Galloway, trimming the lead to Trailing 20-7 at the start of the second half, Tampa Bay got back in the contest as Rice registered a sack and forced fumble that was recovered by the Bucs, setting up a four-yard touchdown run by RB Carnell Williams. 24 GAME 4 SAINTS 24 BUCS 21 October 8, 2006 Louisiana Superdome (68,183) NEW ORLEANS Saints rookie RB Reggie Bush s 65-yard punt return for a touchdown with 4:17 remaining in the game proved to be the difference. The Buccaneers offense racked up 406 total yards and for the second game in a row rallied from a deficit of 10 or more points to take a late lead. Making his first career start, rookie QB Bruce Gradkowski completed 20-of-31 pass attempts for 225 yards and two touchdowns while Carnell Cadillac Williams recorded his first 100-yard rushing performance of the season. Tampa Bay took an early 7-0 lead, driving 61 yards in six plays on its first possession as Gradkowski found Galloway on an 18-yard scoring strike. For the third consecutive game, Tampa Bay rallied from a fourth quarter deficit to take the lead as they trailed the Bengals 13-7 before the Clayton score. Defensively, DT/DE Ellis Wyms recorded his first career multi-sack game for the Buccaneers, posting two sacks of QB Carson Palmer on the afternoon. After a scoreless first quarter, Palmer connected with WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh on a 33-yard touchdown pass with 9:08 remaining in the second quarter to give the Bengals a 7-0 lead. 26 GAME 6 BUCS 23 EAGLES 21 October 22, 2006 Raymond James Stadium (65,808) TAMPA In one of the most thrilling games in team history, K Matt Bryant connected on a 62-yard FG with no time remaining for the win. The 62-yard FG was the second longest game-winning field goal in NFL history and the third longest overall. Tampa Bay did not commit a turnover while forcing four Eagles turnovers as Buccaneers CB Ronde Barber became the first player in team history to return two interceptions for touchdowns in the same game during the regular season, taking two QB Donovan McNabb pass attempts back from 37 and 66 yards for scores. Barber put Tampa Bay up 7-0 early in the second quarter on his first interception return for a touchdown. Philadelphia threatened before halftime, driving to the six-yard line, but bypassed a FG attempt with eight seconds remaining for a shot at the end zone, which failed when TE L.J. Smith was tackled at the two-yard line by Barber after a short pass from McNabb. The Buccaneers extended the lead to 10-0 on the first drive of the second half as Bryant connected on a 30-yard FG. The Buccaneers got behind early as the Saints scored on their first three possessions; including a QB Drew Brees 15-yard touchdown pass to WR Marques Colston, a 52-yard touchdown pass to WR Devery Henderson and a 46-yard field goal by K John Carney. The Buccaneers began to battle back late in the second quarter as QB Bruce Gradkowski hit WR Joey Galloway deep down the sideline for a 44-yard touchdown. Tampa Bay pulled within three at on its next drive when Gradkowski found Galloway again, this time from 17 yards with less than 10 seconds remaining in the first half. It marked the 12th multi-touchdown performance of Galloway s career and moved him into sole possession of sixth place in team history with 19 touchdown catches as a Buccaneer. Additionally, the 44-yard scoring pass to Galloway was Gradkowski s longest touchdown pass of his career and marked the third time in five career games that he has thrown multiple touchdown passes. However, Dallas racked up 28 points during the second and third quarters and 435 total yards in the game on their way to victory. FB Mike Alstott s one-yard TD run with 9:18 remaining in the first quarter gave Tampa Bay the early advantage, but Dallas responded by scoring touchdowns on two of its next three drives as QB Tony Romo hit WR Terry Glenn on touchdown passes of 30 yards and two yards. Buccaneers K Matt Bryant cut the Cowboys lead to on a 46-yard FG with 6:38 remaining in the first half, but Dallas again responded by scoring two touchdowns in its next three drives. Following a QB Bruce Gradkowski interception in Buccaneers territory late in the first quarter, Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger connected with TE Jerame Tuman on a two-yard touchdown pass for a 7-0 lead. The Steelers tacked on a field goal just after the twominute warning of the first half to take a 10-0 lead into the intermission. The Buccaneers drove to the Atlanta 24-yard line on their opening drive, but had to settle for a 42-yard K Matt Bryant FG. Atlanta threatened to tie the game on its ensuing drive, but holder Matt Schaub mishandled the snap on the field goal attempt. 34 GAME 14 BEARS 34 BUCS 31 (OT) December 17, 2006 Soldier Field (62,260) CHICAGO Trailing by 21 points late in the third quarter, Tampa Bay rallied to tie the game and force overtime, but K Robbie Gould's 25-yard field goal with 3:37 remaining in the extra frame won it for the Bears. Buccaneers QB Tim Rattay replaced starting QB Bruce Gradkowski in the second quarter to complete 20-of-35 pass attempts for 268 yards, a career-high tying three TDs and one interception as he helped erase the 21-point deficit. Chicago managed the only points of the first quarter as QB Rex Grossman hit TE Desmond Clark on a 24-yard TD reception. Tampa Bay cut the lead to 7-3 on K Matt Bryant's 45-yard FG midway through the second quarter, but the Bears scored touchdowns on two of their next three drives, including a fiveyard scoring run by former Buccaneer RB Thomas Jones and another Grossman to Clark touchdown pass from 12 yards.
