2 This year s team returns three starters and six letterwinners. They will play at brand new Tudor Fieldhouse. It is, in fact, so new that a capacity has not yet been established for the building. Senior guard Rodney Foster leads the team afgter averaging 11.2 point and 3.1 assists per game last year. Junior guard Lawrence Ghoram averaged 8.5 points and 3.9 rebounds. Junior guard Corey Pflieger averaged 8.0 points and 3.8 rebounds. The Owls averaged just 55.9 points per game last year, shooting only.379 from the field and.273 from three-point range. A QUICK LOOK AT THE VIKINGS The Vikings were in , winning the Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament titles, and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year Ken Bone returns to lead the Vikings in GAME BREAKDOWN TEAM STATS (07-08) PSU RICE Season Record Conference Record Scoring Average Opp. Scoring Avg FG Percentage pt FG Percentage pt FG per game FT Percentage Rebounding +/ Turnover +/ their title defense. In his fourth season on the Park Blocks, Bone has a record. He has six returning letterwinners and three returning starters, including Big Sky Conference Player of the Year SR G Jeremiah Dominguez (5-6, 14.2 ppg, 4.1 apg, league-leading 62 steals, school-record 84 three-point field goals). Dominguez was recently named a preseason Mid-Major All-American. He is a little warrior, and he is a competitor, said Bone. He just brings to every game and every practice and every drill. It s exciting to see kids like that get rewarded with that type of recognition. Other returning starters include JR F Kyle Coston (6-8, 5.9 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 41% 3-pt FG) and SR G Andre Murray (6-2, 9.1 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 2.0 apg). Also returning are JR F Tyrell Mara (6-6, 4.7 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 40% 3-pt FG), JR F Julius Thomas (6-5, 4.0 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 71% FG) and SR G Mickey Polis (5-8, 3.2 ppg, 50% 3-pt FG, 82% FT). The Vikings are bolstered by three transfers to aid in the loss of first team All-Big Sky Conference Deonte Huff, and Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year Scott Morrison. Expected to have a big impact after redshirting last year are JR F Jamie Jones (6-7, University of Portland), SO F Phil Nelson (6-7, University of Washington) and JR G Dominic Waters (6-1, University of Hawai i). Those three kids are all good players, and they will all contribute in their own way. I think they will be very good, said Bone. Newcomers include three letter of intent signees: SO G/F Paul Guede (6-5, Tallahassee CC), FR G/F Wendell Wright (6-5, Mayfair (CA) HS) and JR C Donatas Visockis (6-10, Butte (CA) JC). The Vikings also have three walk-ons in SO G Dane Johnson (6-1, Western Oregon), SO F Louis Lee (6-7, Clark CC) and FR G Austonn Lazoff (6-2, Konawaena (HI) HS). I think we have the team to compete with the better teams in the conference, said Bone. I feel comfortable with the talent we have, and the attitudes we have. I feel better about that than probably anything, that we have a lot of kids just totally buying into what we are trying to achieve. Bone, on the Big Sky Conference: I believe there will be more parity in the conference this year. It seemed like it was a little down last year overall, and I don t foresee that happening this year. I m happy with where we are at as a group. But right now, on November 5, it doesn t make a whole lot of difference. The Vikings took a firstround loss to eventual national champion Kansas, but a standard had been set for Portland State basketball that had not been achieved before. The accomplishments of the Viking program under Bone in were remarkable: A school-record total of wins (23) and Big Sky wins (14). VIKINGS IN THE GARDEN Portland State played three games in The Rose Garden in , winning all three. Two were Big Sky Conference Tournament wins, and a third came over Lewis and Clark during the preseason. The Portland State program is now 19-9 all-time when using the Rose Garden as a home court. Prior to a Dec. 5, 2007 game with Lewis and Clark, PSU s last appearance in the Rose Garden was a Dec. 12, 2001 game against Oregon State SEASON PREVIEW What will they do for an encore? That s the question that Portland State fans will be asking this year as the Vikings are coming off the best basketball season in the program s history. Portland State made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division I Tournament last year after capturing the Big Sky Conference championship, the Big Sky Tournament title and winning a school-record 23 games. Even a first-round loss to eventual national champion Kansas couldn t dampen the excitement of the season. Now, fourth-year head coach Ken Bone and a half-dozen returning players must try to live up to heightened expectations for Viking basketball. The good news is Portland State appears primed to do just that. Although PSU lost five seniors and two key starters from last season, a strong core returns along with three talented redshirt transfers and three national letter of intent signees. We definitely have a target on our backs, said Bone. We are the defending Big Sky champions and people are going to be ready for us every game. We are in a different position than we were last year, so we need to be at our best mentally and physically every game to have close to the kind of season we had last year. Bone, who was named Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year in , has led the Vikings to elevated status as the team has gone from 12 to 19 to 23 wins in his three seasons, improving from fifth to fourth to first in league play. In addition, the Vikings rewrote the school record book, setting 12 team records and five individual records in RETURNING PLAYERS Big Sky Conference Player of the Year Jeremiah Dominguez returns to the point for the Vikings for his senior season. Dominguez was brilliant last year averaging 14.2 points, 4.1 assists, hitting a school-record 84 three-point field goals to lead the Big Sky Conference, and making a Big Sky-best 62 steals. Dominguez was twice named Big Sky Player of the Week, earned first team All-Conference, Big Sky Newcomer of the Year and was named to the Big Sky All-Tournament team. Dominguez brings playmaking, scoring and leadership abilities to the program. It won t be easy for him to repeat what he did last year, but he is a very determined individual, said Bone. Also returning is backcourt mate Andre Murray, a 6-2 senior. After entering the starting lineup late in the preseason, Murray took off. He averaged 9.1 points and 3.7 rebounds per game, but those numbers improved to 10.9 points and 4.6 rebounds in conference play. The Vikings were 18-4 with Murray in the starting lineup. Junior forward Kyle Coston is the third member of the starting lineup returning. A 6-8 shooter, Coston hit 39 three-pointers at a.406 clip for the season. Coston got better as the season progressed, shooting.521 from threepoint range in conference play and averaging 7.6 points against conference opponents. PSU was 14-3 with Coston in the starting lineup, and he earned Big Sky Conference All-Tournament honors. Tyrell Mara, also a junior forward, was a starter early in the year and averaged nearly 19 minutes per game. Injuries slowed Mara at midseason, but he averaged 4.7 points per game and shot.403 from three-point range. Backup forward Julius Thomas is an active interior player despite his 6-5 stature. Thomas shot.714 from the field, averaging 4.0 points and 3.1 rebounds in 14 minutes per night last season. Thomas, who has shot.668 from the field in two seasons at PSU, will also be a junior in this year. The final returning player is senior guard Mickey Polis, who served as a backup at the point last season. Polis shot.500 from three-point range in limited minutes. Portland State led the Big Sky Conference in three-point field goals made (8.91 per game), and three-point percentage (.393). That figures to continue in as the six returning lettermen combined to make three-pointers, a.413 mark. We have a number of guys that can shoot the three. We need to utilize that with the deeper three-point line, extend the defense so we can drive the ball, then use our post players effectively, said Bone. NEWCOMERS We lost seven guys (from last year) and everyone contributed in what we achieved, said Bone. So, we are fortunate that waiting in the wings are three redshirt transfers. We lost a tremendous amount from a championship team, but we have some guys that can come in and play right away. As if the long-range shooting talent already on the floor weren t enough, the Vikings will welcome a pair of redshirts in who can also fill it up from outside. Sophomore forward Phil Nelson, a transfer from Washington, will be ready to prove he is one of the best three PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS BASKETBALL 5 WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT VIKING BASKETBALL Portland State University, located in Portland, is the largest school in the state of Oregon with more then 27,000 students enrolled in the fall of PSU was founded in 1946 as Vanport College - a two-year institution. Athletically, Portland State began as a junior college in , but competed in the Oregon Collegiate Conference (NAIA) beginning in to PSU became a four-year institution - Portland State College - in The Vikings won five OCC titles and competed in the NAIA playoffs twice. Portland State joined the NCAA in The Vikings reached the College Division playoffs in College Division was the forerunner to Division II. Portland State was given university status in During the 1970s, Portland State competed as a Division I program. The Vikings biggest star was Freeman Williams, who still ranks as the second all-time leading scorer in college basketball history behind Pete Maravich. Williams, a Division I All-American in 1978, scored 3,249 points in his career. The university dropped the men s basketball program in 1981 for budgetary reasons. It remained dormant until when basketball was reinstated and Portland State joined the Big Sky Conference. PSU has had six winning seasons in its 12 years as a member, including three of the last four. Portland State won the Big Sky Conference regular season title in (19-9, 11-3), but lost in the Big Sky Tournament semifinals, missing a chance for the NCAA Tournament. In , the Vikings won the Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament titles going 23-10, 14-2 in the Big Sky Conference. The resulting NCAA berth was the first at the Division I level for the Viking program. The Vikings lost to eventual national champion Kansas, but concluded the most successful season in school history.

6 point shooters in the Big Sky Conference after a redshirt season. In fact, the 6-7 Nelson, originally from Keizer, OR, may be the best shooter the Vikings put on the floor. His size, like Coston s, will allow him to get a lot of open looks on the perimeter. Junior guard Dominic Waters, originally from Portland s Grant High School, is a transfer from the University of Hawai i. The Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in , Waters shot over 40% from three-point range in two seasons with Hawai i. He should provide a presence as a combo guard in the coming season. Helping to shore up the inside game will be junior forward Jamie Jones, who played two seasons at the University of Portland before transferring to PSU last year. Jones averaged 10.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, blocked 31 shots and shot.507 from the field in with the Pilots. Bone signed a post to help fill the absence of four-year letter-winning center Scott Morrison. Junior college transfer Donatas Visockis is an experienced player having competed one year at Southern Mississippi and one year at Butte (CA) JC. At 6-10, 235, Visockis should be battle ready for the Big Sky Conference. A pair of 6-5 swingmen are expected to have an immediate impact for the Vikings in the coming season. Junior college transfer Paul Guede can play on the perimeter and comes to the Vikings as a talented defensive player. Freshman Wendell Wright is a late addition, signing a grant-in-aid with the Vikings in June. He had originally signed a letter of intent with Loyola Marymount, but was released from that contract after the Lions had a coaching change. Portland State also has a pair of sophomore walk-ons in Dane Johnson and Louis Lee. Johnson, was the Freshman of the Year in the Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference last season while at Western Oregon and provides great depth at point guard. Lee, a 6-7 forward from Vancouver s Mountain View High School, played at Clark Community College last year. Another walk-on, Austonn Lazoff, is a guard who will redshirt this season SEASON REVIEW The Portland State Vikings men s basketball team produced the finest season in the school s history in , compiling a record, winning the Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament championships, and making a first-ever trip to the NCAA Division I Tournament. Losing a first round game to number-one seed Kansas at the NCAA Midwest Regional did not dampen the Vikings spirits, as they had a host of outstanding achievements to look back on.
