VIKINGS SIGN HENDERSON, RUMEL FOR Portland State men s basketball coach Tyler Geving has announced the signing of two high schoolers to National Letters of Intent for the academic year. The Vikings have signed Tyrell Henderson of Tempe, AZ and Brendan Rumel of Tucson, AZ during the early signing period. We are excited about signing two kids who are outstanding students and who are both high character kids, said Geving. They are both very disciplined on and off the court and these are traits we are looking for in our recruits. These are two players we expect to be big contributors over the next four years. Henderson is a 6-3 combo guard who attends Corona del Sol High School. He is part of a program that has routinely won state championships. It is also the former high school of current Viking guard Calaen Robinson. Tyrell comes from Corona Del Sol program where they have won four consecutive Arizona State Championships, said Geving. He brings a winning attitude to our program as well as being an outstanding student. Tyrell is a versatile player who takes pride in guarding the other teams top player. He has a high basketball IQ and I m excited to coach him over the next four years. Rumel, a 6-10 forward, plays at Rincon High School. As a junior he averaged 17.8 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game. He also has shooting range for a big man, hitting 25 three-pointers over the past two seasons. Any time we can get a high school kid with height and skill, we feel very fortunate, Geving said. Brendan has a high ceiling as a player and we feel he is going to make great strides over the next four years. He has the ability to score inside and can also step outside to shoot it. Brendan is another outstanding student with high character. We are looking for him to make a big impact on our program Viking Basketball 4

Construction of the new The Viking Pavilion will begin in January The Pavilion will consist of an upgraded Stott Center facility, including a new arena for Viking basketball, as well as athletic training enhancements, academic upgrades and overall facility enhancements. The Viking Pavilion will more than double the capacity of PSU s home court (to be situated on the east side of the building) to somewhere between 3,000-4,000 seats. The arena is expected to be available for play beginning in January Portland State received public recognition from the NCAA in 2014 for being among the top 10 percent of teams in multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores for the four-year period ending in PSU basketball, which received APR sanctions six years ago, is now among the top programs in the nation in APR scores. Head Coach Tyler Geving has led the program to that accomplishment. PSU had the only men s basketball program in the Big Sky Conference and among the state of Oregon s four Division I programs to be among the top 10 percent recognized by the NCAA. Head Coach Tyler Geving and Associate Head Coach Jeff Hironaka were both assistant coaches on the Seattle Pacific basketball staff. Special Advisor Barry Adams, a high school coaching legend in the state of Oregon, was elected to the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame on March 10, Adams spent more than four decades as a prep coach in the state. Assistant Coach Michael Plank spent a portion of his summer working with the Costa Rican National Team. Former Viking Ime Udoka played seven seasons in the NBA. He started 75 games for the Portland Trail Blazers in Udoka is now an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs, and won an NBA title with the team in Julius Thomas, who holds Portland State records for games played (121), field goal percentage in a season and career (.671/.663), and career wins (78) was a two-time Pro Bowler for the Denver Broncos. Thomas played on two Big Sky Conference Championship/NCAA Tournament teams ( , ) at PSU. He competed in Super Bowl XLVIII in Thomas signed a free agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars in SEASON HIGHLIGHT REEL With a win over Pacific Lutheran (11/13), Portland State had its first 100-point performance in a counting game since a win over Walla Walla on Dec. 3, It was the most points by a Viking team since a win at Montana on Mar. 1, GR F Cameron Forte had 22 points and eight rebounds and JR G Bryce White scored 20 points with four assists. SO F Isaiah Pineiro posted 24 points and 14 rebounds in a win at UT Rio Grande Valley (11/22). GR F Cameron Forte had a double-double as well with 16 points and 10 rebounds Viking Basketball 5

6 WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT PORTLAND STATE Portland State University, located in Portland, is the largest school in the state of Oregon with 28,241 students. PSU was founded in 1946 as Vanport College - a two-year institution. Athletically, Portland State began as a junior college in , but competed in the Oregon Collegiate Conference (NAIA) beginning in to PSU became a four-year institution - Portland State College - in The Vikings won five OCC titles and competed in the NAIA playoffs twice. Portland State joined the NCAA in The Vikings reached the College Division playoffs in College Division was the forerunner to Division II. Portland State was given university status in During the 1970s, Portland State competed as a Division I program. The Vikings biggest star was Freeman Williams, who still ranks as the second all-time leading scorer in college basketball history behind Pete Maravich. Williams, a Division I All-American in 1978, scored 3,249 points in his career. The university dropped the men s basketball program in 1981 for budgetary reasons. It remained dormant until when basketball was reinstated and Portland State joined the Big Sky Conference. PSU has had seven winning seasons in its 13 years as a member, including four of the last five. Portland State won the Big Sky Conference regular season title in (19-9, 11-3), but lost in the Big Sky Tournament semifinals, missing a chance for the NCAA Tournament. In , the Vikings won the Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament titles going 23-10, 14-2 in the Big Sky Conference. The resulting NCAA berth was the first at the Division I level for the Viking program. The Vikings lost to eventual national champion Kansas, but concluded the most successful season in school history. In , PSU once again won 23 games - matching the school record - and reached a second straight NCAA Tournament after winning the Big Sky Conference Tournament for the second year in a row. With 78 wins from , PSU had its most successful era in school history. Portland State has had 19 first team All-Big Sky Conference selections since 1996, including two Big Conference Players of the Year (Seamus Boxley, Jeremiah Dominguez), three Big Sky Defensive Players of the Year (Seamus Boxley - twice, Scott Morrison), and four Big Sky Newcomers of the Year (Jason Hartman, Ime Udoka, Dupree Lucas, Jeremiah Dominguez), one 6th Man of the Year (DaShaun Wiggins) and one Big Sky Outstanding Freshman (Seamus Boxley). Among Vikings in the NBA, Freeman Williams and Ime Udoka each spent seven playing seasons in the league. Udoka is currently an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs VIKING SEASON PREVIEW The Portland State Vikings will go after a third straight winning season in , but believe they have the potential for a lot more. Tyler Geving begins his seventh season as Head Coach on the Park Blocks and 12th overall. With his combination of talented returners, transfers and recruits, Geving expects his Vikings to play deep into March. Portland State has five returning letterwinners, three returning starters and two returning redshirts in The Vikings lost their top three scorers in DaShaun Wiggins, Gary Winston and Tiegbe Bamba as all completed their college careers in However, JR F Braxton Tucker (11.5 ppg, 5.3 rpg,.500 FG%), SR C Collin Spickerman (4.4 ppg, 4.3 rpg, school-record 2.5 bpg), and JR Gs Bryce White (9.5 ppg, 4.1 rpg) and Zach Gengler (4.6 ppg, 2.5 rpg) return with a combined 63 starts. Geving has brought in three Division I transfers that should all have a big impact in 15-16: JR G Calaen Robinson, GR F Cameron Forte and GR G Donivine Stewart. Robinson is a 6-2 combo guard who was a redshirt for the Vikings in after transferring from Arizona State. Forte, a 6-7 forward from Georgia, and Stewart, a 6-foot guard from SIUE, are also transfers who have received degrees from their previous institutions and have one year of eligibility remaining. Both can play right away. That gives the Vikings a solid seven with which to begin. But the talent doesn t stop there. Other important newcomers include Evan Garrison (JR, 5-10, Clark College), De Sean Parsons (JR, 6-7, Salt Lake CC), Khari Holloway (JR, 6-2, Mesa CC), Isaiah Pineiro (SO, 6-6, Sierra JC), Namdi Okonkwo (JR, 7-0, Western Wyoming JC) and Armani Collins (FR, 6-5, Stuart Hall (CA) HS). Other returners are letterwinner Montie Leunen (JR, 6-4) and redshirt Daniel Davydov (FR, 6-0). Austin Bryant (FR, 6-6) has joined the program as a walk-on. The Vikings should have plenty of depth at every position. We have eight new guys to blend together, figure out rotations and figure out roles, said Viking Coach Tyler Geving. That is the mystery right now. It varies from day to day on who fits where, but I think it is a good thing, because it means we have some depth. We have multiple guys that can play multiple positions and that is a real positive for us. In fact, the biggest challenge for the Vikings may simply be finding a role for everyone. But Geving thinks that has been addressed in the off-season and the pre-season. We have functioned pretty well here offensively, he said. We have always had scorers. We will continue to play up-tempo and push it. We will have to play a little bit faster with the 30-second shot clock this year. Sharing the basketball is important. When you have multiple guys that can score, you have to have them buying into playing for each other. As a result we have looked hard at building team chemistry and think we ve done a good job with that. We are trying to build the trust and talk about playing for each other. That part has been good so far but we will wait until we are hit with a little adversity and see how the team deals with it. But we definitely have more of a team feel now than we did last year. At the point, Robinson, Stewart and Garrison will all vie for time. Robinson may have the inside track to start, but is expected to play significant time at the off-guard position as well due to his ability to run the floor and score. Stewart has the experience of starting 58 games at the Division I level, averaging 10.5 points and 4.3 assists for SIUE. Garrison brings a leadership quality and toughness to the role after being the starting point at Clark College last season. Also contending to start on the perimeter are White and Gengler, who combined for 23 starts in White is a versatile offensive performer returning from a back injury that cut his sophomore season short after 13 games. Gengler proved to be one of the Vikings top defenders in the second half of the season. Parsons, Holloway and Collins will also battle for time at the 2 and 3 positions. The front court appears to be vastly upgraded for the Vikings as returner Braxton Tucker is now joined by Forte and Isaiah Pineiro. Tucker is PSU s top returning scorer, while Forte has two years experience in the SEC. Forte can score in a variety of ways and should be a big contributor. All three are capable of playing the 3 or the 4. Portland State s defensive capabilities should be impressive with the return of the Big Sky s leading shot blocker, center Collin Spickerman. The 6-8 post with a 7-2 wingspan set a PSU record with 2.5 blocks per game as a junior. Expected to back him up will be the first seven-footer ever at PSU, Namdi Okonkwo. A transfer from Western Wyoming JC, Okonkwo is not only tall, but very athletic and springy. Those two should be great rim protectors for the Vikings. Defensively, we will play the percentages a little more, said Geving. In the past we gambled a little on steals and being up-tempo. We will try not to extend too much because we have two good shot-blockers in Collin and Namdi. We kind of did that at the end of last year because of Collin and we were holding teams to 41-42% shooting. Knowing those guys are back to protect the rim is a pretty good weapon. When you have the leading shot-blocker back, and a 7-footer that s a pretty good shot-blocker and quick off his feet - there are times we can be aggressive - but we will play the percentages more. The 12-team Big Sky Conference Tournament has a new post-season set-up and format. The Big Sky will move its conference tournament to a neutral site in Reno, NV. All 12 teams will be part of the tournament for the first time as it takes place at the Reno Events Center, Mar The stress level of getting to the tournament goes away a little, said Geving for his coaching brethren. But having four teams getting a first-round bye will keep most teams motivated. There is that carrot out there to finish in the top four because you would rather play three nights than four nights. The difference between fourth and fifth can be big Viking Basketball 6
