The Vikings (11-17, 7-10) seem to have hit their stride and it could not have come at a better time as the Big Sky Conference looms next week in Reno. PSU currently sits in the number-eight seed in the Big Sky and will have a first-round game on Tuesday against either Northern Colorado or Sacramento State. That will be determined following Saturday s games as the order of (Montana State, Portland State, Northern Colorado, Sacramento State) has yet to be established. PSU can move up to number seven with a Saturday win and a Montana State loss. All other scenarios have the Vikings as an eight-seed. PSU picked up another win on Thursday, 89-81, over Northern Arizona. It was big night as SO F Isaiah Pineiro recorded a career-high 31 points, and GR F Cameron Forte posted the first triple-double in Portland State history (20 points, 15 rebounds, 10 assists). That victory was the second in a row and third in four outings for the Vikings. PSU has averaged 90.5 points per game and shot.551 from the field in those games. Southern Utah comes off a overtime loss at Sacramento State on Thursday night. The Thunderbirds are currently 5-22 on the season, 3-14 in the Big Sky Conference. They have a 3-12 road record. Due to the Big Sky s unbalanced schedule, PSU is meeting Southern Utah for the first time this season. Saturday s game at the Stott Center will feature Senior Night as the Viking team will recognize Forte, GR G Donivine Stewart and SR C Collin Spickerman playing in their final home game. Tip-off is 7:05 p.m. Live video, audio and stats for the game are available at The Big Sky Conference Tournament runs Mar at the Reno Events Center in Reno, NV. 9 Most recent game, Mar. 3, 2016: PORTLAND STATE 89, NORTHERN ARIZONA 81 Portland, OR - Viking forwards Isaiah Pineiro and Cameron Forte were the dynamic duo on Thursday night. Pineiro went for a career-high 31 points while Forte recorded a triple-double in leading Portland State to an Big Sky Conference win over Northern Arizona at the Stott Center. Pineiro hit shots from the field and 6-9 free throws for his 31, adding in 12 rebounds. Perhaps more remarkable was the performance of Forte, who came into the game as PSU s leading scorer and rebounder. He added passing to the list on this night, compiling 20 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists for the first triple-double in Portland State men s basketball history. That forward combo had 51 points and 27 rebounds for the Vikings as they won for the third time in four games. They were pretty good, said Geving of his two inside players. Pineiro struggled a little bit on the road trip last week, but he is such a competitive kid. He had a good week of practice and showed with a phenomenal game tonight. And obviously Forte s triple-double is pretty special. I am excited for him and that just shows you how unselfish he has been this season. Portland State figured to score points in this one. The Vikings had averaged 91 points over their previous three games, and NAU came in allowing 82 points per game - second-worst in the Big Sky Conference. Pineiro took advantage of that, scoring 13 in the opening 12 minutes of the game. The Vikings went on a 24-7 run midway through the half to take control with Pineiro getting 12 points in that rally. Pineiro had 19 points by halftime as the Vikings built a lead. Forte had only four points, but had already logged seven rebounds and five assists. A 17-4 run by the Vikings early in the second half all but put the game away. The only drama at that point was whether Forte could pull off the first triple-double in PSU history. He reached that milestone with a little more than six minutes to play, hitting Calaen Robinson on a fast-break layin. PSU s largest lead was 27 points at with 9:48 to play. But the Lumberjacks were able to lop 14 points off that edge over the next five minutes. PSU again pushed the lead to 18, but NAU cut it to single digits in the closing seconds. Portland State shot from the field for a.515 shooting percentage. NAU was for.464. Rebounding was even at 37-37, but the Vikings were able to score 22 points off 14 Lumberjacks turnovers. In addition to the fine play of Pineiro and Forte, Robinson scored 16 points with five assists. Zach Gengler added 10 points and four assists. Kris Yanku led Northern Arizona with 32 points, five assists and five steals. Ako Kaluna added 17 points and 18 rebounds. Portland State improves to with the win, 7-10 in the Big Sky. Northern Arizona dropped to 5-23, 3-14 in conference play.
