The Fighting Irish have won a school-record 25 consecutive regular season road games (and 32 of their last 37 overall) since a loss at top-ranked Baylor on Nov. 20, 2011, in the Preseason WNIT championship game. Since the start of the season, Notre Dame is 30-5 (.857) against ranked opponents, including a 10-1 record at home. The Fighting Irish are closing in on becoming the 27th NCAA Division I women s basketball program to record 800 all-time wins (they currently are ,.717, in 37 seasons of varsity competition). Notre Dame has appeared in the AP poll for 123 consecutive weeks (including the past 53 weeks in the AP Top 10), extending a program record that dates back to the preseason poll, and ranking sixth in the nation among active AP poll appearances. What s more, every current Fighting Irish player has competed for a ranked Notre Dame squad during her career, with the vast majority of that time (73 of 84 weeks) spent in the AP Top 10. Of the 14 losses suffered by the current Fighting Irish senior class, eight were decided by single digits (and three others by points). Notre Dame aims to continue its remarkable success at Purcell Pavilion, with the Fighting Irish owning a (.812) all-time record in 37 seasons at the facility, including a 66-5 (.930) record since the arena was renovated prior to the season. With 635 victories in her 27 seasons at Notre Dame, head coach Muffet McGraw ranks second on the Fighting Irish athletics all-time coaching wins list (across all sports), trailing only men s/women s fencing coach Michael DeCicco ( from ). With 723 career wins, McGraw needs 16 victories to move into the top 10 on the NCAA Division I career list. She currently stands 12th behind two former ACC coaches Virginia s Debbie Ryan (739) and the late North Carolina State coach Kay Yow (737). Other Notre Dame Notables Notre Dame is among the nation s winningest programs during the past five seasons ( to present), ranking fourth u139 with 139 victories. Notre Dame has ranked among the top 20 in the nation in average attendance annually since (including top-five rankings the past four years), most recently placing fifth in the nation last season with a school-record 8,979 fans per game, topping the previous year s mark (8,571) and setting a new school record for the fourth year in a row. The Fighting Irish also have drawn at least 5,000 fans to 195 of their last 197 home games (including an active streak of 38 consecutive contests with 8,000 fans), logging 36 Purcell Pavilion sellouts, including 30 since the start of the campaign and a school-record 11 sellouts last year. The Fighting Irish have become a regular fixture in the WNBA Draft in recent years, as 10 Notre Dame players have been selected in the past 13 seasons. Skylar Diggins was the most recent Fighting Irish player to be chosen, going to the Tulsa Shock in the first round (third overall pick) of the 2013 WNBA Draft. It marked the second consecutive year Notre Dame had a player selected No. 3 overall (Devereaux Peters went third to Minnesota in 2012), making the Fighting Irish just the second program to field lottery choices in consecutive seasons. For the seventh year in a row, the Fighting Irish posted a perfect 100-percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR), according to figures released by the NCAA in October. What s more, Notre Dame was one of only four schools in the previous six years to record a 100-percent GSR and play for a national championship in the same season (and the only program to do it twice, pulling off that feat in 2011 and 2012). The Notre Dame-Central Michigan Series Sunday will mark the fifth meeting between Notre Dame and Central Michigan, with the Fighting Irish holding a 3-1 series edge against the Chippewas. This will be the third time the teams have met at Purcell Pavilion, with each side winning once before (Notre Dame won the last time it played host to CMU in South Bend back in the season opener). The Last Time Notre Dame and Central Michigan Met Skylar Diggins scored 17 of her 25 points in the first half, and No. 5 Notre Dame pulled away for a victory over Central Michigan on Nov. 29, 2012, at McGuirk Arena in Mount Pleasant, Mich. Diggins also added six steals and played a huge role in a defensive turnaround in the second half. Four of those takeaways came in the final seven minutes to help thwart a Central Michigan comeback. Ariel Braker added 10 points and eight rebounds to help the Fighting Irish close the month of November undefeated for the first time since the season. Jessica Green scored 19 points and Niki DiGuilio had 12 points for Central Michigan. Green scored 12 points in the first 20 minutes, and Crystal Bradford grabbed seven of the team s 21 first-half rebounds to help keep the Chippewas within reach of the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame opened the second half on a 7-0 run but Central Michigan pulled within one with under 12 minutes to play. The Fighting Irish led the entire second half but didn t truly pull away until Diggins hit a free throw for a lead with 45 seconds to play. The Last Time Notre Dame and Central Michigan Met At Purcell Pavilion Notre Dame tipped off its season with a victory, defeating Central Michigan, on Nov. 10, 2006, at Purcell Pavilion. The Fighting Irish never trailed in the contest and led by double digits for all but the first 3:59 in their first meeting with the Chippewas in more than 22 years. The Fighting Irish shot the ball well on Opening Day, connecting at a 48.3 percent clip (29- of-60) from the field and a sharp 83.9 percent (26-of-31) at the free throw line. Notre Dame also enjoyed a +10 edge on the glass, with Erica Williamson collecting a game-high eight rebounds, not to mention a game-best five blocked shots. Central Michigan s Candace Wilson led all scorers in the game with 17 points, with 12 of those coming in the second half on 4-of-4 threepointers. Sharonda Hurd added 15 points and a team-best seven rebounds for the Chippewas, who bounced back from a.280 first-half field goal percentage with a.517 mark after the break. Other Notre Dame-Central Michigan Series Tidbits Senior forward Ariel Braker (Grosse Pointe Woods) is the lone Michigan native on this year s Notre Dame roster. However, the Great Lakes State has produced 17 Fighting Irish players through the years, second only to Indiana (20) in the program s 37-year history. Second-year CMU assistant coach Andrew Wodrich is a 2007 graduate of Bethel College in Mishawaka, Ind., and played two seasons for the Pilots. The last time Central Michigan head coach Sue Guevara brought a team to Purcell Pavilion, she was at the helm for Michigan on March 19, 2001, when the Wolverines met Notre Dame in the second round of the 3

Central Michigan also has a tie-in to Notre Dame s current success on the football field. Fourth-year Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly cut his teeth at the NCAA Division I level with the Chippewas from , leading CMU to a (.543) record and the 2006 Motor City Bowl before moving on to Cincinnati, and eventually to Notre Dame, where he has led the Fighting Irish to a (.706) record, including an 8-4 mark this year and a berth in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl against Rutgers on Dec. 28 at Yankee Stadium in New York City. Notre Dame vs. The Mid-American Conference Notre Dame is (.725) all-time against the current Mid-American Conference alignment, with a 22-4 (.846) record at home. The Fighting Irish also sport a 22-5 (.815) record against MAC schools in the Muffet McGraw era ( to present) with a 13-1 (.929) mark at Purcell Pavilion. What s more, Notre Dame has won its last 20 games against current MAC schools since an loss to Northern Illinois on March 10, 1995, in the semifinals of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference (now Horizon League) Tournament. Notre Dame is (.740) all-time against Michigan schools, with a 37-8 (.822) mark against the Great Lakes State in the Muffet McGraw era ( to present). Last year, the Notre Dame women s basketball program collected approximately 2,000 stuffed animals through its Teddy Bear Toss, with those donations later presented to, among others, several young patients at Riley Children s Hospital in South Bend. No More Teachers, No More Books Notre Dame has won 25 consecutive games coming off the final exam break (in 1994 and 1997, no games were played between the end of exams and Christmas). However, because of the extended layoff due to finals and associated sluggishness, the results of these post-exam break games have varied wildly, from exceptionally close to blowouts. Recent examples of the nailbiters came in 1999 (a win at Florida International, closing the game on an 11-5 run in the final 2:43), 2004 (a win at Marquette on Jacqueline Batteast s three-pointer at the horn that lifted Muffet McGraw past Digger Phelps as the winningest coach in Notre Dame basketball history) and 2011 (a home win over No. 8/7 Kentucky, taking the lead for good on an 11-0 run after UK led with less than five minutes to play). However, with the exception of that 2011 thriller against Kentucky, the Fighting Irish have looked remarkably fresh in their recent postexam games, winning the other four contests by an average of 53.8 points per game in victories over Loyola-Chicago (89-45), Charlotte (90-31), Valparaiso (94-43) and most recently, Alabama A&M (100-39). fighting irish women s basketball National Polls Associated Press Poll December 16, 2013: Poll #7 Team (First-Place Votes) Rec Pts LP 1 Connecticut (36) uduke utennessee NOTRE DAME Kentucky Stanford Louisville umaryland Baylor South Carolina Colorado LSU Oklahoma State unorth Carolina Iowa State Georgia upenn State Purdue Nebraska Oklahoma California Iowa usyracuse uflorida State Gonzaga Others Receiving Votes: Arizona State 51, Texas A&M 44, Arkansas 32, Texas 15, San Diego 9, West Virginia 8, UTEP 7, ugeorgia Tech 4, Indiana 4, Middle Tennessee 2, BYU 1, Saint Joseph s (Pa.) 1. Going Out On A High Note Notre Dame has made a habit of heading into the Christmas holiday with a victory, having won 17 consecutive pre-yuletide games and going 27-9 (.750) all-time in such contests, including an victory over No. 22 Texas A&M last year in the championship game of the World Vision Classic out in Las Vegas. The last time the Fighting Irish lost their final game before Christmas was Dec. 21, 1995 (their first season in the BIG EAST Conference), when Michigan State pulled out an overtime win in East Lansing, Mich. Irish Closing In On 800 Wins Notre Dame is on the doorstep of becoming the 27th program in NCAA Division I women s basketball history (and fourth Atlantic Coast Conference school) to record 800 victories, currently standing NCAA Division I Next To 800 All-Time Victories unotre DAME Duke North Carolina State NOTE: Through games of Dec. 19 three wins short of the milestone. The Fighting Irish have posted a (.717) record in their 37 seasons of varsity competition, dating back to the campaign. The last school to reach the 800-win mark was LSU (which did so on Nov. 25, 2012, at Florida International), with Notre Dame s fellow ACC members, Duke and North Carolina State, also nearing 800 all-time victories (the Blue Devils currently have 795 wins, while the Wolfpack have recorded 786 wins). Currently, North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland are the three ACC members in the 800-victory club. Getting The Jump At 9-0, Notre Dame is off to the third-best start in the program s 37-year history. The only times the Fighting Irish opened with a better record than this season were in (when they reeled off a school-record 23 consecutive wins en route to a 34-2 final record and the program s first national championship) and (when they started 15-0 on the way to a 29-6 record and spot in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen). A Helping Hand The Fighting Irish entered the week ranked second in the nation in assists at 23.1 per game. Notre Dame has dished out at least 21 helpers in eight games thus far (including a season-high 31 dimes against UCLA on Dec. 7), with the Fighting Irish piling up assists on 66.9 percent of their made field goals this year (208 of 311). Glass Cleaners Notre Dame came into this week s action ranking third in nation in rebounding margin (+16.6 per game). The Fighting Irish have posted doubledigit rebounding margins in six games this season, including four games when Notre Dame had a +20 rebounding margin or better. NOTRE DAME The Fighting Irish also have collected at least 50 rebounds in three games, including their first two outings, nabbing 54 rebounds against UNC Wilmington on Nov. 9, followed by 52 caroms against No. 19/18 Michigan State two nights later. This marked the first time the Fighting Irish have had consecutive 50-rebound games since Dec. 12 & 22, 2001, when they did so in home wins over Western Michigan (56 rebounds) and Marquette (54 rebounds). Notre Dame nearly made it three for three on the boards to open the season, finishing with 49 caroms on Nov. 16 against Valparaiso. The last time the Fighting Irish had three consecutive 50-rebound contests was Jan , 1992, in wins over Louisville (56) and at Butler (50), followed by a home loss to Detroit (54). Dialing Long Distance Although not usually a primary part of the Notre Dame arsenal, the Fighting Irish have found the three-point shot much to their liking this season. Notre Dame currently ranks fifth in the nation (and tops in the ACC) with a.433 three-point percentage, with three different players connecting at better than 50 percent from beyond the arc. Junior guard Madison Cable leads the way with an ACC-best.600 three-point percentage, thanks in part to her 5-for-6 effort from long range in the Dec. 7 win over UCLA. Cable s five triples were the most for a Notre Dame player in a game since Jan. 23, 2012, when Skylar Diggins made five in a home win over Tennessee. The Fighting Irish also connected on 10-of-17 three-pointers in that victory over UCLA, their highest production from the arc in nearly four years, dating back to a similar 10-triple performance on Jan. 30, 2010, at Syracuse. Road Warriors Notre Dame has won a school-record 25 consecutive regular season road games and 32 of its last 37 overall, including the Dec. 14 victory at Michigan. The Fighting Irish last tasted defeat on the road in the regular season on Nov. 20, 2011, a setback at No. 1 Baylor in the Preseason WNIT championship game. The highlight of this current run came on Jan. 5, 2013, when Notre Dame edged No. 1 Connecticut, 73-72, in Storrs, Conn., earning its fourth all-time win over a top-ranked opponent and first-ever victory on the road. Prior to the past two-plus years, the school record for consecutive regular season road wins was held by Notre Dame s national championship team that won its first 10 road outings before a loss at No. 11/14 Rutgers on Feb. 17, The Fighting Irish also have won a schoolrecord 16 consecutive conference regular season road games, with their last loss coming as part of the BIG EAST Conference on Feb. 28, 2011 (a last-second loss at No. 12/11 DePaul). The previous school record for consecutive regular season conference road wins was seven, set numerous times, most recently crossing between the and campaigns. The previous Notre Dame record for consecutive regular season road victories in any conference was 15, which the Fighting Irish set from Feb. 25, 1989-Feb. 14, 1991 during their time in 5

Allen has not disappointed in her debut campaign, averaging 8.7 points and 3.9 assists per game (the latter ranking 13th in the ACC). She also is third in the ACC with a.617 field goal percentage, ranks sixth with a 1.94 assist/turnover ratio, and is tied for 14th in the conference with 1.9 steals per game. Notre Dame s 1,000-Point Scorers Senior tri-captains Kayla McBride and Natalie Achonwa will spend their final season at Notre Dame steadily climbing the program s alltime scoring list, after both entered the Fighting Irish 1,000-Point Club last year. Polling Station Notre Dame is ranked No. 4 in the latest Associated Press poll, its 53rd consecutive week in the top 10 of the media balloting, dating back to the middle of the season, and marking 123 consecutive weeks in the AP poll. The Fighting Irish reached a milestone on Nov. 26, 2012, with their 100th consecutive AP poll appearance. It not only extended the program record that started with the AP preseason poll in (the old record was 59 consecutive weeks from ), but it made the Fighting Irish are one of six teams in the nation with an active streak of 100 consecutive AP poll appearances. What s more, every current Notre Dame player has competed for a ranked Fighting Irish squad throughout her career (84 consecutive weeks for the current senior class), spending the vast majority (73) of those appearances in the AP Top 10 (and never lower than 18th). Notre Dame began the season ranked No. 6, representing the 14th time in the past 15 years (starting with the campaign) that the Fighting Irish have appeared in the preseason AP poll, something only seven schools in the nation have done Connecticut, Duke and Tennessee have shown up in all 15 during that span, while Georgia, Oklahoma and Stanford join the Fighting Irish with 14 preseason AP poll berths. Notre Dame has been ranked in the coaches poll for 124 of the past 125 weeks (and 88 in a row), falling just outside the Top 25 in the final poll of the season. Nevertheless, the Fighting Irish have appeared in the coaches poll for a total of 257 weeks during their history (all coming during McGraw s tenure). Half And Half During the past 14 seasons, Notre Dame has been nearly unbeatable when it has the lead at halftime. The Fighting Irish are (.938) since the start of the campaign when they go into the dressing room with the lead, including wins in 215 of their last 228 such contests (.943). What s more, in the past five seasons ( to present), Notre Dame is (.984) when leading at the half, with the only losses coming on April 5, 2011, in the NCAA national championship game at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis (Notre Dame led Texas A&M, at intermission before falling 76-70), and Feb. 12, 2012, against West Virginia (Fighting Irish led at the break before the visiting Mountaineers rallied to win in the closing seconds, 65-63). The Best Offense Is A Good Defense During the past 19 seasons, Notre Dame has discovered that a solid defensive effort can almost certainly guarantee a victory. In fact, since the beginning of the season, the Fighting Irish have an amazing (.949) record when they hold their opponents below 60 points in a game, including a 4-0 record this season. But Sometimes You Have To Score If You Want To Win Not resting solely on its defensive laurels, Notre Dame also seemingly has found the magic mark when it comes to outscoring its opponents. During the past 19 seasons (since ), the Fighting Irish are (.970) when they score at least 80 points in a game. The only blemishes on that record are three overtime losses to Texas A&M (88-84) and Michigan State (87-83) in 1995 and UCLA (86-83 in double OT) in 2010, as well as a loss to Connecticut in 1998, an loss to DePaul in 2008, and a setback at Baylor in In the past five years ( to present), Notre Dame is 69-2 (.972) when topping the 80-point mark, including a 7-0 record this season. Five of the nine losses in that span came at the hands of Big Ten opponents (four by 12 points or less) Wisconsin in 1996 (81-69), Purdue in 2003 (71-54), Michigan State in 2004 (82-73 OT), Indiana in 2006 (54-51) and Minnesota in 2009 (79-71) with the other defeats coming to Tennessee in 2005 (62-51) and 2008 (87-63), UCLA in 2010 (86-83 in 2OT) and Baylor in 2012 (73-61). The Purdue loss snapped a 33-game non-conference home winning streak that began after the UW setback. Since its inaugural season in , Notre Dame has played all of its games at the former Joyce Center, posting a (.812) record at the venerable facility. Three times ( , and ), the Fighting Irish went a perfect 15-0 at home, which was the school record for home victories in a season prior to the campaign, when Notre Dame went 16-1, a mark that lasted only two seasons before the Fighting Irish posted a 17-1 record at Purcell Pavilion in Fighting Irish Are Hottest Ticket In Town The past four seasons have seen an unprecedented surge in fan support for Notre Dame women s basketball, as the Fighting Irish set new program records for the highest year-end NCAA attendance ranking (fourth in ), highest average attendance (8,979 fans per game in ) and most sellouts in a single season (11 in ). And, as the old saying goes you ain t seen nothin yet. For the fifth consecutive year, Notre Dame fans all but exhausted the program s season ticket packages (approximately 7,500) and have snapped up single-game ducats at a rate that helped the Fighting Irish rapidly approaching sellout status for the vast majority of their home games, and currently putting them fourth in the nation in average attendance (8,484 fans per game) In fact, while some additional tickets may be available on the day or week of the game for individual contests this season (depending on returned inventory by visiting teams and other constituencies), it s possible that, for the third consecutive season, Notre Dame will flirt with a sell out for each of its home games. Notre Dame To Host 2014 NCAA Regional On Oct. 9, Notre Dame was selected as one of four host sites for regional-round games in the 2014 NCAA Division I Women s Basketball Championship. Games will be played at the 9,149-seat Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center on March 29 (noon and 2:30 p.m. ET) and March 31 (7:30 p.m. ET), with ticket pricing and availability for those contests to be released at a later date. This will mark the second time in program history that Notre Dame has been chosen to host regional competition in the NCAA Division I Women s Basketball Championship. On March 25 & 27, 1983 (the second year of the NOTRE DAME tournament s existence), the NCAA Mideast Regional was played at Purcell Pavilion (then known simply as the Joyce Center) and featured Tennessee, Ole Miss, Indiana and Georgia competing for the right to go to the NCAA Women s Final Four. Georgia emerged from the four-team field, defeating Tennessee, in the Mideast Regional final. With this selection, Notre Dame will play host to action in the NCAA Women s Basketball Championship for the ninth time, and the fourth time in six seasons. Most recently in March 2012, the Fighting Irish began their run to a second of three consecutive NCAA Women s Final Four appearances with wins at Purcell Pavilion over Liberty (74-43) and California (73-62) in the first two rounds of the NCAA Championship s Raleigh Region. In addition to the 1983 NCAA Mideast Regional, Notre Dame has been home to NCAA first- and second-round tournament action seven times (1994, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2009, 2010 and 2012), with the Fighting Irish going 10-2 (.833) in those contests on the Purcell Pavilion hardwood, advancing to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2000, 2001, 2004, 2010 and 2012, reaching the NCAA Women s Final Four in 2001 and 2012, winning their first national championship in 01. Notre Dame has been ranked in the Top 10 in the final NCAA attendance standings nine times in the past 13 seasons, including top-five finishes each of the past four seasons. Last year, the Fighting Irish set a school record for average attendance for the fourth year in a row at 8,979 fans per game (better than 98 percent of Purcell Pavilion s official capacity), highlighted by a school-record 11 sellout crowds, including nine of their final 10 home games. Purcell Pavilion also has been one of the top drawing sites for NCAA Championship games in recent seasons. The last time Notre Dame played host to first- and second-round games in 2012, it averaged 6,648 fans per session, the best two-day attendance average among the 16 preliminary round host sites in the tournament. Two years earlier in 2010, Notre Dame ranked second among the 16 first- and second-round host sites with 6,129 fans per session. Joining Notre Dame as host sites for regional games in the 2014 NCAA Championship are Lincoln, Neb. (Pinnacle Bank Arena); Louisville, Ky. (KFC Yum! Center); and Stanford, Calif. (Maples Pavilion). The 2014 NCAA Women s Final Four will be held April 6 & 8 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn. Fighting Irish On Your Radio Dial Beginning with the athletics year, the Notre Dame athletics department announced it had partnered with the LeSEA Broadcasting Network, making Pulse FM (96.9/92.1) the new radio home of Notre Dame women s basketball in the South Bend market. LeSEA originates all Notre Dame women s basketball games, with those events carried on Pulse FM (96.9/92.1), marking a return to the FM side of the dial for the first time since the season. Combined, these two stations blanket the nation s No. 91 media market 9

10 NOTRE DAME (South Bend-Mishawaka-Elkhart), covering a 21-county area in northern Indiana and southwest Michigan that contains approximately 1.5 million listeners (better than 800,000 in the greater South Bend area alone). All told, Notre Dame s women s basketball network stretches from Kalamazoo, Mich., to the north, North Judson, Ind., to the west, Macy, Ind., (home of former Fighting Irish All-America center Ruth Riley) to the south, and LaGrange, Ind., to the east. Bob Nagle, the voice of Notre Dame women s basketball from through (including the program s first NCAA Final Four berth in 1997), returns for his sixth season in his second stint as the radio play-by-play broadcaster for the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame On The Small Screen Notre Dame will have at least 21 regular season games televised during the season. Highlighting this year s broadcast schedule are 13 nationally- or regionally-televised Fighting Irish women s basketball contests, including all 15 regular-season home games. This will mark the 13th consecutive season that the Fighting Irish will have at least seven games on broadcast television, and additional games this season could be selected to air on either a regional or local basis, with further announcements pending. The premier games on this year s Fighting Irish television docket are a home-and-home series with new ACC rival Duke, with both the Feb. 2 game in Durham, N.C., and the Feb. 23 replay at Purcell Pavilion scheduled to be broadcast live on ESPN as part of that network s new Sunday women s basketball package. Those two games are part of Notre Dame s six regular season games scheduled for the ESPN family of networks, including two appearances on that entity s famed Big Monday telecast. The Fighting Irish will play on ESPN2 s Big Monday on Jan. 20 (7 p.m. ET at Tennessee) and then again one week later on Jan. 27 (7 p.m. ET at ACC foe Maryland). Notre Dame has been a mainstay on Big Monday in recent years, having won its last six games on the noted ESPN package. In addition, Notre Dame continues to expand its broadcast reach globally on the Internet. For the eighth consecutive season, all Fighting Irish home games not selected for commercial TV coverage will be streamed live and free of charge on the official Notre Dame athletics multimedia platform, WatchND (watchnd.tv), and new this season, these games will feature stand-alone broadcasters rather than simulcasting the Notre Dame Radio Network feed. This year s TV slate continues a trend that has seen the Fighting Irish become a regular fixture on television. Beginning with its first NCAA national championship season in , Notre Dame has played in 264 televised games, including 208 that were broadcast nationally. Oh Captain, My Captain Senior forwards Natalie Achonwa and Ariel 10 Braker, and senior guard Kayla McBride are serving as Notre Dame s team captains for the season. All three players received the captain s honor for the first time in their respective careers following a preseason vote by their teammates. This will be sixth time in the past 10 years the Fighting Irish have had a trio of captains, but the first since , when Brittany Mallory, Natalie Novosel and Devereaux Peters earned that title while leading Notre Dame to a spot in the NCAA national championship game. Irish Fans Crave Another Big Mac Attack Now in its seventh season, Notre Dame s wildly-successful Big Mac promotion once again looked to send fans home with full bellies, offering a coupon for a free Big Mac from South Bend-area McDonald s restaurants if the Fighting Irish score at least 88 points in a home game. In the seven-year history of the promotion (and counting exhibition games), Notre Dame has hit the 88-point mark 47 times, most recently in the Dec. 7 victory over UCLA. Junior forward Markisha Wright leads all current Fighting Irish players with four Big Mac baskets in her career, having knocked down her fourth on Oct. 30 in the exhibition win over California (Pa.). The matchup between the Fighting Irish and Beavers will be televised live from Gill Coliseum on the Pac- 12 Networks (Comcast Channel 419, DISH Network Channel 413). fighting irish women s basketball Signees Mychal Johnson, a 5-8 guard from Huntington, W.Va (Huntington St. Joseph High School), Brianna Turner, a 6-3 forward from Pearland, Texas (Manvel High School) and Kathryn Westbeld, a 6-2 guard from Kettering, Ohio (Kettering Fairmont High School) all made their official commitments to Notre Dame during the early signing period, head coach Muffet McGraw announced Nov. 14. All three student-athletes are rated among the top 20 players in the country by various national recruiting services. As a group, this trio currently is ranked No. 3 by multiple recruiting outlets and is a consensus top-10 class by all major services for the third year in a row, giving Notre Dame a Top 25 class for the 18th consecutive year, a streak only two other schools in the country (Connecticut and Tennessee) can match. 23 Head Coach Muffet McGraw 27th season at ND ( ,.745) 32nd season overall ( ,.737) If we searched for an entire year. I don t think we would find anyone better suited for our program. With those words, former Notre Dame director of athletics Gene Corrigan announced the hiring of Muffet McGraw as the third head coach of the Fighting Irish women s basketball program on May 18, Corrigan may not have realized it at the time, but he also ushered in an era of unparalleled success in women s basketball at Notre Dame, brought to life on the shoulders of a 5-foot-6 dynamo who accepts nothing less than the very best from herself, her players and her program. Ask anyone familiar with women s basketball about McGraw and her Notre Dame program and inevitably, you ll hear the same two words -- consistency and excellence. And it s no wonder, when you consider what McGraw and the Fighting Irish have achieved in the past 26 seasons: The 2001 NCAA national championship, defeating Purdue in the title game, McGraw is one of only seven active Division I coaches to guide her team to a national title. Three trips to the NCAA Division I national championship game, including two of the past three NCAA title contests (2011 and 2012). McGraw is one of just three active Division I coaches (and seven all-time) with at least three appearances in the NCAA national championship game. Five trips to the NCAA Women s Final Four, including each of the past three seasons (1997, 2001, 2011, 2012, 2013). McGraw is one of just four active Division I coaches (and six all-time) to lead her team to five Women s Final Four appearances. 11 NCAA Sweet Sixteen trips, all in the past 17 seasons ( ). The Fighting Irish are one of six programs in the nation that can make that claim. Two-time consensus National Coach of the Year, sweeping the four major coaching honors (Associated Press, WBCA, Naismith Trophy and USBWA) in both 2001 and McGraw is just the second NCAA Division I coach ever to sweep the Big Four awards twice in her career. Five-time conference Coach of the Year, most recently collecting her second BIG EAST Coach of the Year trophy in McGraw has earned top coaching honors in four different conferences during her career (the past three while at Notre Dame), having also garnered accolades in the East Coast ( at Lehigh), North Star (1988), Midwestern Collegiate/Horizon League (1991) and BIG EAST (2001, 2013) conferences. Ranks eighth among active NCAA Division I coaches with 723 career wins (reaching the 700-win milestone on Feb. 5, 2013, at Villanova in her 957th game, making her the eighth-fastest to 700 wins in Division I history) and 17th among active Division I coaches with a.737 all-time winning percentage. Ranks seventh among active NCAA Division I coaches with win seasons, including 23 seasons at Notre Dame with 20-or-more victories, as well as 19 in the past 20 years ( ). Notre Dame also has posted win seasons, five 30-win campaigns and two 35-win seasons in the past 17 years ( ). 20 NCAA tournament appearances, including a current string of 18 consecutive NCAA tournament berths (the sixth-longest active run of consecutive appearances and eighth-longest streak at any time in NCAA tournament history). During this current streak ( ), Notre Dame has won at least one NCAA postseason game 16 times. 101 wins over ranked opponents, including 87 in the past 15 seasons alone ( ). In addition, 36 of those wins have come against top-10 opponents, including 13 against top-five teams and four against No. 1-ranked squads. 262 appearances in the Associated Press Top 25 poll (including an active school-record streak of 123 consecutive weeks in the AP poll). McGraw is ninth among active Division I coaches and 19th all-time in AP poll appearances (as of Dec. 16). Notre Dame also has spent 151 weeks ranked among the top 10 teams in the nation, all in the past 18 seasons ( ). Nine conference titles, including three BIG EAST Conference crowns (2001, 2012, 2013) during Notre Dame s 18 years in that league ( through ). The Fighting Irish, who ran the table in their final BIG EAST season with a 16-0 record in , also placed among the top four in the BIG EAST 15 times in their 18-year conference membership. Six conference tournament championships, including the program s first BIG EAST Championship crown in consecutive top-20 recruiting classes, dating back to the incoming class of 1997 (and including the incoming class of 2014, ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation). Notre Dame is one of just three programs in the nation that owns an active streak of that length. Ranks second on the all-time wins list (regardless of sport) in the 127-year history of Fighting Irish athletics, trailing only former men s/women s fencing coach Michael DeCicco ( combined record from ). Far and away the winningest basketball coach (men s or women s) in school history, with noted men s skipper Digger Phelps second on that list (393 wins). A perfect 100-percent NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) score in each of the past six years ( ). Notre Dame also is one of only four programs in the country to record a perfect GSR and play for the national title in the same season (something the Fighting Irish did in both and ). Add it all up and you have the framework for a Hall of Fame career. And, on June 11, 2011, that s exactly what McGraw became, as she officially was the first Notre Dame representative to be inducted into the Women s Basketball Hall of Fame, an accomplishment now immortalized with a banner hanging in Purcell Pavilion. Still, with all of those accomplishments in hand, McGraw has shown no signs of slowing down any time soon. In July 2012, the veteran head coach signed a landmark 10-year contract extension (believed to be among the longest contract agreements in NCAA women s basketball history) that will keep her patrolling the Fighting Irish sidelines through the campaign. For more than 25 years, Muffet has led our women s basketball program and represented this University with distinction, said Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., Notre Dame s president. Her teams have excelled on the court and in the classroom, and I am absolutely delighted that she will continue to lead the Irish for many more years. We are thrilled to be able to enter into a decade-long agreement with Muffet, who is not only the face of Notre Dame women s basketball, but increasingly, the face of women s basketball, given all that she s accomplished, said University vice president and director of athletics Jack Swarbrick. She s taken this program to a place where it s annually in the conversation for the national championship, which is the model all coaches want to follow. She s also Women s Basketball Hall of Fame Consensus National Coach of the Year , 2013 Naismith National Coach of the Year Finalist , 1998, 2001, 2005, 2012, 2013 Conference Coach of the Year , 1988, 1991, 2001, 2013 NCAA National Champion NCAA National Finalist , 2012 NCAA Final Four , 2001, 2011, 2012, 2013 NCAA Tournament , 1994, NIT , 1991, 1995 NOTE: McGraw s complete bio, including year-by-year records/ results can be found on of this year s Notre Dame women s basketball media guide.

24 Head Coach Muffet McGraw playing an important role in the game nationally, and her peers recognize those contributions, as well as the quality of her program here at Notre Dame. Off the court, she has created a program that has a lasting community identification and a special connection between the University and the city of South Bend, which is one of those unique points of intersection that universities have to be careful to build and maintain, and she s done that for us in a really remarkable way. Under McGraw s guidance, the past 19 seasons ( to ) have been the most successful in Notre Dame s history, reflecting the program s remarkable BIG EAST Conference era and transition to its current home, the Atlantic Coast Conference. During that time, the Fighting Irish have compiled an impressive (.776) record, including a sparkling (.784) regular season mark in conference play, the second-best winning percentage in BIG EAST history. Also during this near two-decade span, Notre Dame has averaged nearly 26 victories per year, with two 35-win seasons, five 30-win campaigns and win seasons to its credit. What s more, the Fighting Irish have one NCAA national championship (2001), three NCAA title game appearances (2001, 2011, 2012), five NCAA Women s Final Four berths (1997, 2001, 2011, 2012, 2013) and 11 Sweet Sixteen showings since the season, which began the program s current run of 18 consecutive NCAA Championship appearances. In , McGraw and Notre Dame capped off an impressive three-year stretch ( record) with not only the program s third consecutive trip to the NCAA Women s Final Four, but also a sweep of the BIG EAST regular season and tournament titles (the first team other than Connecticut in 20 years to pull off that feat). The Fighting Irish finished the campaign with a 35-2 record (including a school-record 30-game winning streak) and perfect 16-0 BIG EAST mark, made all the more remarkable by the fact that McGraw was able to guide Notre Dame throughout a seamless transition after losing three starters (and four seniors) from the previous year s NCAA national runner-up squad (a four-player contingent that included two All-Americans/WNBA first-round draft picks and accounted for 40 percent of the team s scoring and rebounding from that club). Success for McGraw also has meant coaching great players. During her illustrious career, the Notre Dame skipper has coached 15 All-Americans, including 2001 consensus National Player of the Year Ruth Riley and four-time All- American (and two-time consensus first-team All-America choice) Skylar Diggins. McGraw also has worked with 14 players who have been selected for USA Basketball National Teams, with those players going on to win a total of 26 medals, including 12 golds. In addition, McGraw has coached 27 players who have earned all-conference recognition a total of 55 times, including 20 first-team picks who have been chosen a total of 33 times, and has helped shape several other national award winners, namely a two-time Nancy Lieberman Award recipient (Diggins), two Frances Pomeroy Naismith award honorees (Niele Ivey in 2001, Megan Duffy in 2006) and two United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) National Freshman of the Year selections (Jacqueline Batteast in 2002 and Jewell Loyd in 2013). Another sign of McGraw s success has been her ability to prepare her players for the next level. No less than 25 Notre Dame cagers have gone on to play professionally (domestically or overseas), including 12 who either have been drafted or signed as free agents with WNBA teams. The past 13 seasons have seen the greatest influx of Fighting Irish talent into the WNBA, with 10 Notre Dame players having been selected in the league s annual draft during that time, including the school s first two WNBA lottery picks (Devereaux Peters in 2012 to Minnesota; Diggins in 2013 to Tulsa, both with the No. 3 overall choice), making the Fighting Irish just the second program in the 17-year history of the WNBA Draft to produce lottery (top-four) selections in consecutive seasons. McGraw s pupils also have thrived in the WNBA, with four winning league titles during their professional careers. Coquese Washington ( 92) was the first to hoist the WNBA hardware with the Houston Comets in 2000, followed three years later by Riley with the Detroit Shock. Riley and Batteast then teamed up to help Detroit to its second crown in 2006, with Peters the most recent to join the club in 2013 with the Minnesota Lynx. Dedicated to helping grow and further the sport in any way possible, McGraw has groomed 12 of her former players and/or assistant coaches who currently are serving on basketball staffs at either the high school or college level. Of those 12 proteges, four presently are Division I head coaches -- Bill Fennelly (Iowa State), Kevin McGuff (Ohio State), Jonathan Tsipis (George Washington) and Washington (Penn State). McGuff and Washington (along with current Fighting Irish associate head coach Carol Owens) comprised McGraw s assistant coaching staff on Notre Dame s 2001 NCAA national championship squad, while McGuff and Owens also were on staff for the Fighting Irish during their run to the 1997 NCAA Final Four (that team also included Ivey and Beth (Morgan) Cunningham, both of whom are currently on McGraw s staff). A native of West Chester, Pa., McGraw earned her bachelor s degree in sociology from Saint Joseph s University (Pa.) in Following graduation, she coached for two seasons at Archbishop Carroll High School (50-3 record) in the Philadelphia suburb of Radnor, and two more at her alma mater as an assistant coach under Jim Foster (now the head coach at Chattanooga). In 1982, McGraw was named head coach at Lehigh University, her teams compiling a sharp (.683) record during her five-year tenure. McGraw and her husband, Matt, celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary in 2013 and make their home in Granger, Ind. They are the proud parents of 23-year-old son Murphy, a 2012 Indiana University graduate who now lives in Milwaukee and works in the corporate offices for Kohl s Department Stores.
