The Fighting Irish (15-1, 4-0 ACC) picked up their season-high eighth consecutive win Sunday, downing North Carolina, at Purcell Pavilion. Notre Dame shot 50.7 percent from the floor and led by at least 20 points for the majority of the second half en route to the victory. Freshman guard Arike Ogunbowale led a balanced Fighting Irish offense with a gamehigh 16 points off the bench, while fellow rookie reserve guard Marina Mabrey added 14 points. 2 NOTRE DAME Quick Hitters Notre Dame is off to a 15-1 start or better for the fourth time in five years and sixth time in program history (also , , , and ). The Fighting Irish are 3-1 against ranked opponents this season, and also registered a win over UCLA on Nov. 28 in the Bahamas, two days before the Bruins entered the Associated Press poll (17th this week). Despite losing two starters from the lineup that opened last April s NCAA championship game in Tampa (and missing a third - sophomore forward Brianna Turner - with an injury for six games), Notre Dame has scarcely missed a beat this season, led in large measure by two first-time starters in graduate student guard Madison Cable (scoring up from 6.2 to 14.9 ppg.) and sophomore forward Kathryn Westbeld (6.7 to 9.4 ppg.), as well as the reliable production off the bench from freshman guards Marina Mabrey (12.9 ppg.) and Arike Ogunbowale (11.6 ppg.). The Fighting Irish feature a very balanced attack with four players currently posting double-figure scoring averages (and two others at 9.0 ppg. or better). Of those six, two are freshmen (Marina Mabrey and Ogunbowale), and two are sophomores (Turner and Westbeld). Notre Dame s bench play has been sharp this season, with the Fighting Irish reserves averaging 32.2 points per game, compared to 13.6 ppg. for their opponent s bench. Notre Dame has been ranked in the top 10 of the Associated Press poll for 107 of 118 weeks this decade (since ), ranking second in the nation in that category behind only Connecticut (118). Every current Fighting Irish player has competed for a top-10 Notre Dame squad during her career, with the vast majority of that time (63 of 69 weeks) spent in the top five of the Associated Press poll. Notre Dame also is ranked No. 3 in this week s Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA)/USA Today poll, making its 300th all-time appearance in that survey. It s the eighth consecutive season and 14 of the past 18 years the Fighting Irish have appeared in the top 10 of the coaches poll. Notre Dame has a remarkable tradition of success at home inside Purcell Pavilion, with the Fighting Irish owning a (.824) all-time record in 39 seasons at the facility, including a (.945) record since the arena was renovated prior to the season. Diggins, who was a first-team all-wnba selection in 2014, was one of the WNBA s top players and a prime candidate for league MVP honors during the first half of the 2015 season before suffering a knee injury in late June. Nevertheless, she received her second consecutive starting nod for the WNBA All-Star Game as the top vote-getter in the Western Conference (and second overall). Meanwhile, McBride was chosen as a reserve for the Western Conference in this past summer s WNBA All-Star Game and scored 18 points in her all-star debut. Peters became the second Fighting Irish player to earn two WNBA Championship rings, claiming her second in three seasons with the Lynx (and sixth by a Notre Dame alumna), who defeated Achonwa and the Indiana Fever in a memorable five-game 2015 WNBA Finals series. Ruth Riley was the first Notre Dame grad to be a two-time WNBA champion, winning a pair of crowns with the Detroit Shock (2003 Finals MVP, 2006), while Coquese Washington toiled for the 2000 Houston Comets and Jacqueline Batteast was Riley s teammate on the 2006 title-winning squad in Detroit. The Notre Dame-Boston College Series Notre Dame and Boston College will square off for the 22nd time on Thursday night in a series that includes both schools conference memberships in the BIG EAST ( ) and now the ACC (2013-present). 4 NOTRE DAME The Last Time Notre Dame and Boston College Met Michaela Mabrey tied her career high with six three-pointers and finished with a career-best 20 points as No. 4 Notre Dame beat host Boston College, on Feb. 8, 2015, at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Mabrey was 6-of-9 from three-point range, including 5-of-6 in the first half. Jewell Loyd added 13 points, Kathryn Westbeld scored 12 points, and Taya Reimer and Madison Cable each had 11 points (Cable also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds) for the Fighting Irish. Emilee Daley scored a career-best 18 points and Katie Quandt had 10 for Boston College. The Eagles were without second-leading scorer Nicole Boudreau, who was suspended for the game for violating team rules. The guard was averaging 12.2 points per game. Three For The Money Notre Dame has heated up from the threepoint line in a big way, canning 106 treys this season (6.6 per game), including 91 in its last 12 games (7.6 per game). At their current pace, the Fighting Irish would easily top the single-season program record for three-pointers per game (5.74 in ). In fact, only once in the past 13 seasons has Notre Dame averaged five treys per game ( , when it made exactly five per contest and a school-record 190 total). 6 The Fighting Irish tied a school record with 13 three-pointers on Dec. 5 at top-ranked Connecticut. The 13 triples (which Notre Dame last registered on Jan. 2, 2002, at Miami) also matched two UConn opponent records for three-pointers in a single game (overall and Gampel Pavilion). Notre Dame s.650 three-point percentage (13-of-20) in that Dec. 5 game at UConn was the highest against the Huskies since March 26, 2007, when LSU made 7-of-10 three-pointers (.700) against UConn in the NCAA Fresno Regional final (Elite Eight) in Fresno, California. The Fighting Irish lead the nation in threepoint percentage (as of Tuesday), connecting at a.445 clip from beyond the arc. The Second Platoon Another reason for Notre Dame s success this season has been the performance of its reserves, who are averaging more than 32 points per game and have outscored the opponent s bench by more than a 2-to-1 margin (32.2 ppg. to 13.6 ppg.). The Fighting Irish second unit has outscored its opposite number in 15 games this season, including a season-high 64 points on Nov. 23 at Valparaiso, outscoring the entire Crusader roster by 10 points (not to mention the Notre Dame starters by 18). Cable added her third career double-double on Dec. 9 with game highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds in a win over No. 18/17 DePaul. 7

8 NOTRE DAME Cable was chosen the Junkanoo Jam Freeport Division MVP, after she averaged 17.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game with a.688 field goal percentage,.667 three point percentage and.875 free throw percentage during Notre Dame s two games in the Bahamas. Cable earned her first ACC Player of the Week honor on Dec. 14 after averaging 18.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game with a.600 field-goal percentage and.500 threepoint percentage against DePaul and TCU. Cable continues her penchant for sacrificing her body for team success, having drawn six charges this season to raise her career count to 43 drawn charges. That includes Cable s alert play in overtime of the win over UCLA, when she took a charge from Bruins all- Pac-12 guard (and Canadian National Team member) Nirra Fields with 30.1 seconds left, resulting in the fifth foul on Fields and giving Notre Dame possession with a six-point lead (in essence, clinching the win). Mabrey is Jersey Tough Freshman guard Marina Mabrey is quickly emerging as one of the top young players in the Atlantic Coast Conference, if not all of Division I basketball. The Belmar, New Jersey, native is averaging 12.9 points per game, which ranks 21st in the ACC and third among conference freshmen. She also has scored in double figures 11 times this season, including a career-high 23 points (on 10-of-13 shooting) on Dec. 5 at top-ranked Connecticut. In that UConn game, Mabrey scored 21 points in the first half on 9-of-10 shooting, including 12 consecutive points to highlight a 14-4 second-quarter run that helped give Notre Dame a trio of one-point leads. Mabrey s shooting eye has been outstanding this season, as she ranks second in the ACC in three-point percentage (.500), and 10th in both field-goal percentage (.529) and freethrow percentage (.784), the latter including an.850 foul-shooting ratio (34-of-40) after beginning the year 6-of-11 at the stripe. Mabrey also has proven to be a strong defender, ranking sixth in the ACC at 2.3 steals per game. That mark was highlighted by a school-record 12 steals as part of a tripledouble on Nov. 23 at Valparaiso. Mabrey was named to the Junkanoo Jam Freeport Division All-Tournament Team on Nov. 28 after averaging 18.5 points, 5.0 steals, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists with a.600 field-goal percentage,.750 three-point percentage and.833 free-throw percentage during wins over Denver and UCLA in the two-day event in Freeport, Bahamas. That effort, plus her triple-double earlier in the week, propelled Mabrey to earn ACC Rookie of the Week honors on Nov. 30. Mabrey s Historic Triple-Double Freshman guard Marina Mabrey posted the fifth triple-double in school history (first by a freshman) with 18 points, a school-record 12 steals and a career-high 10 assists on Nov. 23 at Valparaiso. Mabrey became just the second Fighting Irish player to record a triple-double using steals. Mary Gavin (17 points, 14 assists and 10 steals the previous school record for steals before Mabrey s effort) was the only other player to do so on Jan. 31, 1987, against Marquette. Mabrey s triple-double in her fourth career game tied for the second-quickest to start a career in NCAA Division I history only Schaquilla Nunn of Winthrop did so faster (third career game on Nov. 20, 2012, vs. Mississippi State at the Hardwood for Hope Tournament in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico). Mabrey s triple-double was the 25th in ACC history, and the the first in ACC history to feature steals. Mabrey was the second ACC freshman ever to record a triple-double, joining Duke s Elizabeth Williams (18 points, 16 rebounds and 12 blocks at Wake Forest on Jan. 6, 2012) in that elite company. Mabrey s 12 steals also are second on the ACC single-game steals list, and the most since Georgia Tech s Jill Ingram had 14 thefts (tying the NCAA Division I record) against Virginia Tech on Feb. 29, Mabrey s 12 steals tied for the second-most by a player in completing a triple-double, exceeded only by Old Dominion s Ticha Penicheiro (22 points, 15 assists, 14 steals) vs. Saint Francis (Pa.) in the first round of the NCAA Championship on March 13, Mabrey was the first Fighting Irish player with double-digit assists in a game since Feb. 24, 2013, when Skylar Diggins had 10 assists at DePaul as part of her second career triple-double (the most recent one by a Notre Dame player before Mabrey). Game #16 Recap: North Carolina Arike Ogunbowale scored 16 points, Marina Mabrey added 14 and Brianna Turner had 11 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots to lead No. 3 Notre Dame to an victory over North Carolina on Sunday at Purcell Pavilion. The Fighting Irish (15-1, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) had little trouble in winning their eighth in a row, outscoring the Tar Heels in the paint and outshooting them 51 percent to 30 percent. Notre Dame also forced North Carolina, which had won six straight, into 23 turnovers and blocked seven shots. Destinee Walker led the Tar Heels (12-6, 2-1) with 12 points on 3-of-14 shooting and Jamie Cherry scored 10 points. Turner, playing for the fifth time after missing six games with an injury to her right shoulder, scored all her baskets inside, Ogunbowale repeatedly drove inside on North Carolina for layups and Mabrey and Madison Cable, who added 12, scored from inside and outside. The Fighting Irish used a 9-0 run late in the first quarter and a 13-0 run early in the second quarter to open a lead. Polling Station Notre Dame is ranked No. 3 in this week s Associated Press poll, its 95th consecutive week in the top 10 of the media balloting (89 of those in the top five), dating back to the middle of the season and marking 165 consecutive weeks in the AP poll. The Fighting Irish continue to extend the program record for consecutive poll appearances that started with the AP preseason poll in (the old record was 59 consecutive weeks from ), while Notre Dame is one of six teams in the nation with an active streak of at least 150 consecutive AP poll appearances. Every current Notre Dame player has competed for a top-10 Fighting Irish squad throughout her career (69 consecutive weeks NOTRE DAME Active AP Poll Streaks 1. Notre Dame has been ranked in the coaches poll for 168 of the past 169 weeks (and 132 in a row), falling just outside the Top 25 in the final poll of the season. Half And Half During the past 16 seasons, Notre Dame has been nearly unbeatable when it has the lead at halftime. Now That s A Home Court Advantage One of the hallmarks of Notre Dame s success has been its stellar play at home. 11 fighting irish women s basketball The University of Notre Dame s Purcell Pavilion has been rated ninth nationally by LawnStarter in its listing of the greenest college basketball arenas in the country, released in January LawnStarter ranked the top 11 college basketball facilities in terms of ecologically friendly arenas, saying this about Purcell Pavilion: Over 20 percent of construction materials were made regionally, 1,246 tons of construction waste were kept from going to landfills, and low-flow toilets, urinals, faucets and shower heads were installed. As part of the University s goal to ensure that its Catholic character informs all its endeavors, we seek to minimize the environmental impact of new campus buildings and the act of constructing them, says Doug Marsh, head of facilities design and operations at Notre Dame. With those words, former Notre Dame director of athletics Gene Corrigan announced the hiring of Muffet McGraw as the third head coach of the Fighting Irish women s basketball program on May 18, Corrigan may not have realized it at the time, but he also ushered in an era of unparalleled success in women s basketball at Notre Dame, brought to life on the shoulders of a 5-foot-6 dynamo who accepts nothing less than the very best from herself, her players and her program. Ask anyone familiar with women s basketball about Muffet McGraw and her Notre Dame program and inevitably, you ll hear the same two words consistency and excellence. And it s no wonder, when you consider what McGraw and the Fighting Irish have achieved in the past 29 seasons: The 2001 national championship, defeating Purdue in the title game, McGraw is one of seven active Division I coaches to guide her team to an NCAA title. Five trips to the NCAA Division I national championship game, including four of the past five NCAA title contests (2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015). McGraw is one of just two active Division I coaches (and four all-time) with at least five appearances in the NCAA national championship game the other three Division I coaches (Tennessee s Pat Summitt, UConn s Geno Auriemma and Louisiana Tech s Leon Barmore) all are enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Seven trips to the NCAA Women s Final Four (1997, 2001, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015).
