2 Head Coach Greg McDermott Greg McDermott was introduced as the 18th men s basketball coach in Iowa State history on March 21, McDermott, who elevated the University of Northern Iowa program to unprecedented success with three consecutive NCAA appearances, is considered one of the nation s best young coaches. McDermott led ISU to a mark and a tie for seventh in the Big 12 in his first season at the helm despite returning only four scholarship players and being picked to finish 11th in the preseason Big 12 polls. He coached two all-conference players in Wesley Johnson and Mike Taylor. McDermott s meteoric rise in the head coaching ranks occurred in his five seasons as the head coach at his alma mater ( ). After taking over a program that had not posted a winning season since 1997, McDermott s recipe for success launched the UNI program into the national spotlight. In his third season with the Panthers, McDermott led UNI to the 2004 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title and its second NCAA Tournament appearance in school history while recording a mark. He followed that season with two more NCAA Tournament appearances in 2005 and The 42-year-old McDermott compiled a record at UNI. McDermott received his first head coaching job at Wayne State (Neb.) from He led the Wildcats to fourstraight 20-win seasons, one Northern Sun Conference title and a pair of NCAA Division II Tournament appearances. Brackins has 27 blocks this year, which ties for the fourth-best total for an ISU rookie...he is tied for sixth in the Big 12 in blocks at 1.3 bpg. Hubalek s Improvement Hubalek had been slowed all season by a broken foot that occurred in the preseason and is now just hitting his stride. Hubalek always has been a slow starter...he averaged 7.3 points and 4.8 rebounds in his first six games last year, but responded by averaging 12.4 points and 7.4 rebounds in his last 19 games a year ago. This year, Hubalek averaged 7.8 points and shot 40 percent (22-55 FG) in his first seven games...however, Hubalek is averaging 13.6 points (191) and is shooting 50.3 percent ( FG) in his last 14 games. Hubalek has led ISU in rebounding in 12 of 21 games this season and is currently seventh in the Big 12 on the boards with a 7.2 rpg average. Hubalek opened the second half vs. Purdue by scoring ISU s first 16 points in just over a five-minute span...he ended the game with 18 points to help him earn all-tournament honors at the Las Vegas Classic.

He had a streak of 10 consecutive games with double figures until playing just eight minutes in the Colorado game. He had scored 20 points or more in the four games prior to the CU game, the longest 20-point streak for a Cyclones since Curtis Stinson scored 20 or more points in six-straight games in the season. You re In Good Hands With Petersen ISU starting point guard Bryan Petersen may not be the flashiest player, but he has done a tremendous job of starting ISU s offense and taking care of the ball. Petersen leads ISU in assists (3.4) and ranks third in the Big 12 and 69th nationally in assist/turnover ratio at 2.15 a/t. Petersen has put together an amazing streak of ball protection and efficiency...the recruited walk-on who is now on scholarship has 53 assists and just 15 turnovers in his last 14 games (3.5 a/t ratio)...in eight of the last 14 games he has had 0 turnovers. Petersen, who averages 5.1 ppg, has hit 26 3-pointers to boot...71 of his 84 field goals attempted this season have come from long distance.
