Mack Sports Complex unless noted HOFSTRA THIS YEAR: The Pride recorded their sixth consecutive Colonial Athletic Association Wrestling title and their seventh straight conference title (2001 in the ECWA) on March 3 at the 2007 CAA Wrestling Championships at George Mason University. Hofstra, which is sending seven wrestlers to the NCAA Championships, was in dual matches this year. The Pride concluded another perfect conference regular season with a 29-9 victory over Colonial Athletic Association preseason favorite Rider on February 13. Prior to the Rider match, the Pride dropped a decision to Cornell, snapping a seven-match winning streak. Hofstra recorded a 31-3 victory over #14 Penn and a 30-6 victory over #24 Lehigh. Hofstra recorded a 5-0 mark on January at the Colonial Athletic Association Duals at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Hofstra posted a 3-2 record and a sixth place finish at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa on January The previous weekend, Hofstra posted back-toback ties at Michigan and Central Michigan. Hofstra tallied a victory over then-#8 Penn State on December 10 at the David S. Mack Sports Complex on the Hofstra campus. The Pride also posted a 4-0 performance at the Journeymen/Brute Northeast Collegiate Duals in Guilderland Center, New York on November 25. Hofstra also has dual wins over Wagner and Army. The Pride finished ninth at the 47-team Cliff Keen/Las Vegas Invitational on December 2 with four Pride wrestlers placing in the top seven. Hofstra, which will send seven wrestlers to the 2007 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships from March in

2 Auburn Hills, MI, recorded a school-record points, topping the previous mark of 136 set in The seven individual conference champions also ties the school mark for most individual crowns, set in 2005 and Senior Mike Patrovich, who captured his third conference title, posted two tech fall and a pin during the Championships and was named the Tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler. Three other Pride wrestlers recorded their third conference title as senior James Strouse, at 157, and juniors Charles Griffin, at 141, and Joe Rovelli, at 184, notched their third straight CAA crowns. Junior Dave Tomasette, at 125, copped his second CAA title, while senior Chris Weidman, at 197, who was an All- American last year as a conference finalist, captured his first CAA title, as did freshman Lou Ruggirello at 133. Those seven will compete in the NCAA Championships at The Palace in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Graduate-student Matt Pollock, who finished third at heavyweight in the CAA Championships, and sophomore Alton Lucas, who finished fourth at 174, was Hofstra's eighth and ninth place-winners. Patrovich recorded a tech fall on Old Dominion's second-seeded Nick Pullano 19-3 in the 165 pound title match after pinning Drexel's Billy Haydt in the semifinals in 4:45. Haydt took down Patrovich and appeared to be heading for at least back points before the senior All-American used his superior athletic ability to turn Haydt and pin him seconds later. Patrovich (17-4), who finished fourth at last year's national championships at 174 pounds, will be making his fourth NCAA Championship appearance this season. Strouse defeated Drexel's second-seeded Ryan Hluschak, 8-4, in the 157-pound championship match after knocking off Rider's Nathan Galloway, 5-1 in the semifinals. The sixth-ranked Strouse (37-3) will be making his fourth NCAA Championship appearance. Griffin (29-5), who captured his second straight CAA title at 141 after winning his first conference crown at 133 as a freshman, defeated Rider's Don Fisch 7-1 in the 141-pound title match after downing ODU's Ryan Williams by the same score in the semifinals. Rovelli (31-5) captured his third straight title at 184 pounds by posting a 7-2 victory over Rider's Mike Miller in the title match after a 7-0 victory over Sacred Heart's Andrew Silber in the semis. Junior Dave Tomasette (17-5) defended his CAA crown at 125 with a 4-0 decision over Drexel's Steve Mytych in the championship match after pinning Rider's Tommy Lorenzo in 1:16 of the semifinals. Tomasette will be making his third NCAA Championship appearance. Senior Chris Weidman, who earned NCAA All-America honors at 197 after finishing second at the CAA Championships last year, will be making his second national championships appearance after transferring from Nassau Community College. Weidman (28-7) defeated ODU's David Mendoza in the finals after beating Drexel's Jon Oplinger in the semifinals. Freshman Lou Ruggirello (31-7) captured his first CAA title by defeating ODU's Christian Staylor, 6-4, in the finals after posting a 13-2 major decision over James Madison's Brandon Luce in the semifinals. Ruggirello is the front-runner to become Hofstra's third conference Rookie of the Year since joining the CAA in Graduate-student Matt Pollock (16-23) closed out his college career in style with a third-place finish at the CAA Championships. The Cornell-transfer dropped a 2-0 decision to Drexel's Chris Cowan in the semifinals before defeating George Mason's Ryan Kittrick, 6-4, in the consolation semifinals, and pinning ODU's Matt Pellar in 46 seconds of the third-place match. Sophomore Alton Lucas (23-10) placed fourth in the CAA Championships, losing to Binghamton's Josh Patterson 4-2 in the semifinals before dropping a 9-7 decision to Drexel's Nick Kozar in the third-place match. With five matches at the CAA Duals, and two more at the end of the month, the Pride wrestled 14 dual matches in January. That is four more than November, December and February combined. HOFSTRA IN THE NATIONAL DUALS: Hofstra made its fourth straight National Duals appearance, and fifth since the season on January The Pride posted a 3-3 mark in 2004, a 1-2 mark in 2005, and 0-2 marks in 2001 and Hofstra was 3-2 in competition this year and placed sixth with wins over Nebraska, Northern Iowa and Central Michigan, and losses to Iowa and Iowa State. THE IOWA JINX: The spell that Iowa State and Iowa have over the Pride continued at the National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa in January. Iowa State, then-ranked sixth, recorded a 24-9 win over the Pride in the Duals quarterfinals. It was the Cyclones 13th consecutive win over Hofstra in as many meeting. In the fifth place match against #5 Iowa, the Hawkeyes moved to 6-0 against Hofstra all-time with a victory. Hofstra did get a bit of revenge when they defeated Northern Iowa in the consolation round. CHIEF RAY DOWNEY, SR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND NIGHT: Hofstra University proudly welcomed members of the Downey Family and their friends who came to the November 15th match against Army for the presentation of the Chief Ray Downey, Sr. Memorial Scholarship. This year s recipients of the scholarship grants, named in memory of the late FDNY hero who was killed in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, are Mike Patrovich and James Strouse. HOFSTRA RETURNEES: Hofstra returns 11 lettermen, six starters, six NCAA qualifiers, five conference champions and two All-Americans from the squad that placed 11th at the NCAA Division I Championships. RETURNING ALL-AMERICANS: Seniors Mike Patrovich and Chris Weidman are Hofstra s returning All-Americans in Patrovich, who earned a fourth place finish at 174 pounds at the NCAA Championships last March, has dropped down to 165 pounds this year. Weidman, who placed sixth at 197 pounds last March, earned All-Effort Team honors by the NWCA for his finish at the Championships. HOFSTRA WRESTLING HISTORY: This is Hofstra s 59th season of intercollegiate wrestling. Friday, March 2, 2007 at CAA Championships Day One: All ten Pride wrestlers advanced to the semifinal round after posting a combined record of 15-0, including eight wins by fall, as the Pride took a commanding 20-point lead after the first day of the 2007 Colonial Athletic Association Wrestling Championships at the Linn Gymnasium on the campus of George Mason University. Hofstra dominated action on day one with eight pins, four tech falls, two major decisions and a win by medical default. The Pride has accumulated 46 points in the team standings, 20 more than second place Rider, and 20.5 more than third-place Old Dominion. Drexel is fourth with 21.5 points with Sacred Heart fifth with 12.5 points. The Pride improved to overall and 7-0 in conference action. The Broncs of Rider fall to 9-8 and 3-3 in the CAA. The Pride (14-2-3), who posted victories over Old Dominion and Binghamton on day one, recorded a perfect 5-0 record in this year's CAA Duals and in the process boosted their conference match undefeated streak to 53 including 50 consecutive wins. In the day two opener against the Dukes of James Madison, the Pride captured eight of the 10 matches, including tech falls by junior Dave Tomasette (10-5) at 125, senior John Manarte (2-3) at 149, and senior James Strouse (27-2) at 157, to cruise to a victory. The Pride, who posted a record in the two-day event, placed sixth in the Duals which were won by Minnesota. Current top-ranked Missouri placed second followed by Iowa State and Oklahoma State. For the second time in a week, Hofstra and Central Michigan battled to a tie in the consolation bracket third round of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals at the UNI-Dome. By way of criteria "G"-near-fall points (8-5)-in the dual meet tournament tie-breaker, the Pride received the win and advanced to the fifth place match. Hofstra jumped out to a solid lead only to see the Chippewas battle back in the second half of the contest. The Pride captured four of the first five matches, building a 13-3 lead. At 125, Dave Tomasette (7-4) decisioned junior Matt Steintrager Hofstra freshman Lou Ruggirello (20-4) posted his fourth win of the Duals and his 20th of the season with a 7-2 victory over senior Luke Smith. Charles Griffin also posted his fourth win of the Duals to improve to 18-3 on the year with a 10-2 major decision over junior Eric Kruger. CMU senior Tyler Grayson put the Chippewas on the scoreboard with an 8-3 decision over Mike Parziale (11-8) at 149 to cut the deficit to But Hofstra's fourth-ranked senior James Strouse (23-2) posted his fourth win of the Duals with a 10-5 victory over senior Andy Keller at 157. Sophomore Trevor Stewart started CMU on their way back with a 6-3 decision over fifth-ranked Mike Patrovich on a near-fall in the final seconds of the 165-pound match. It was Patrovich's third straight loss-all in the final seconds-of the Duals. Senior Brandon Sinnott, ranked fifth, closed the deficit to 13-9 with a 6-3 decision over Alton Lucas (13-6) at 174. Hofstra junior Joe Rovelli (18-4) gave the Pride some breathing room with a 9-6 decision over Christian Sinnott at 184 before 10th-ranked Wynn Michalak, for the second time in a week, edged fourth-ranked Chris Weidman, 4-3. Trailing and needing a major decision to tie or a tech fall or fall to win, CMU's fifth-ranked senior Bubba Gritter came up with a 10-1 major decision over Matt Pollock to send the contest into the tiebreaker. Going down the list of criteria, Hofstra broke the tie with an 8-5 advantage in near-fall points. But Pride senior James Strouse (22-2) also posted his third win of the Duals with a 9-5 victory over sophomore Moza Fay at 157.
