They were known as Doc s Boys, Dormanites, or Upper Iowans. In 1883, William C. Mabry, a team member on the first Upper Iowa football team, was asked by his teammates to come back from his Christmas holiday in Chicago with an idea for school colors. Mabry returned to campus with ribbons of peacock blue and white. Since peacock blue was chosen as a school color, senior Henry Dickman and Will Baker decided Upper Iowa s official emblem should be the peacock. However, Upper Iowa teams were not referred to as the Peacocks for another 20 years. 6 On November 7, 1919, an editorial appeared in the school newspaper, The Collegian, asking students to select an appropriate name for the athletic teams, but a name could not be agreed upon. On September 25, 1920, The Collegian, printed a story which reported that The Peacocks will show their plumage on the Cornell field. The headline read: PEACOCKS OPEN GRID SEASON SATURDAY WITH NEW OPPONENT. Upper Iowans have been known as the Peacocks since that time.

7 Season Outlook After a strong finish to the season, the Peacocks look to carry that momentum into this season and build on last year s success. The Peacocks began the season with exhibition games at Division I Oral Roberts University and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee before attending the Hillyard Tip-Off Classic on the campus of Missouri Western University to start the regular season. With many new faces to the Upper Iowa men s basketball program, it s no wonder that the Peacocks began the season slowly. The season featured 13 newcomers to the program, which included 10 true freshmen. After starting the season 0-11, the Peacocks obtained their first win of the season in a non-conference road victory over Oakland City University. The win at Oakland City seemed to be the turning point of the season for the young Peacock squad. From that point on, they finished the regular season with a 9-7 record and earned a spot in the NSIC Tournament as the sixth seed. We ended the season with a lot of confidence for a young team, said Coach Dolan. Going into this season we hope to build on that momentum so we can continue moving up in the NSIC standings. Our young players understand that we won t keep improving without hard work. Senior Mitch Melega, above, and sophomore Neil Gross, right. Senior Nick Kramer The season will feature nine returning letter winners, four returning starters and eight newcomers who hope to contribute for the Peacocks this season. Senior Storm Schmitt will compete for his fourth and final season at Upper Iowa University and hopes to build upon his successful junior season. The 6 6 tough and physical center put up career highs in scoring, field goal percentage, and assists during his junior year, while making eight starts for the Peacocks. Storm is what Upper Iowa basketball is all about, said Coach Dolan. He has put his heart and soul into this program the past three seasons and has had an incredible summer. The current direction of the Peacock Basketball Program is a direct reflection of this wonderful young man. Fellow senior Nick Kramer will also play in his final season after transferring to Upper Iowa before his junior year. The long and skilled 6 10 center looks to improve upon a very productive first season as a Peacock. Kramer led the team in field goal percentage (.640) and blocks (20). Nick was one of those great surprises we all have in life, said Coach Dolan. We weren t sure what kind of player we were getting when he asked to transfer to Upper Iowa in the spring of 2007, but we know now and we are very happy with his decision to attend our university. Rounding out the senior class is guard A.J. Adkins. Regularly coming off the bench as the team s sixth man, Adkins provided Upper Iowa with an offensive scoring spark. He finished the season third on the team in scoring (9.6 per game) and second in 3-pointers made (43). A.J. has the ability to take over any game on the offensive end, said Coach Dolan, but the most impressive thing is watching him play defense when he is mentally dialed in. The athletic guard stepped 7

8 in to play as a juco transfer last season for the Peacocks and will try to duplicate his numbers from his junior season during his last year at Upper Iowa. Four sophomore starters return for the Peacocks and are led by NSIC Co- Newcomer of the Year Matt Lesan, who led the team in scoring (12.5 ppg) and 3-pointers made (45). In conference games only, Lesan finished the season fifth in scoring (14.6), free-throw percentage (.808) and 3-point percentage (.459). Lesan emerged as one of the conferences top performers in his first year of college basketball due to his tireless work ethic and competitive approach to the game. Versatile sophomore swingman Dan Bestul caused match-up problems for opponents while regularly filling the stat sheet. The smooth 6 5 south-paw consistently demonstrated his ability to put the ball on the floor and score over defenders. Bestul shot a blistering.500 from the field and.479 from long range during his freshman season, which was a team high. The third starter back, 6 7 sophomore Neil Gross, played his best basketball down the stretch for the Peacocks. The skilled forward consistently showed his ability to step outside and knock-down 3 s while also being able to go inside and score over smaller defenders. Gross finished the season as the team s leader in rebounding at 3.8 per game. The fourth and final sophomore returning starter is Turkey Valley High School graduate, Chris Sul- 8 livan. Chris began the season as a rotating starter with Schmitt and Kramer before emerging as the permanent starter for the final 12 games. While regularly playing against taller opponents, Chris more than held his own and demonstrated a knack for coming up with rebounds and loose balls. Sophomore Alex Kramer, left, and senior A.J. Adkins, right. The Peacocks lost two seniors from last year s club, including point-guard Jude Roybal. Roybal was named to the NSIC All-Conference Third Team as a result of his performance. While his stay at Upper Iowa was short, he still made a big impact on the Peacocks. The senior was second on the team in scoring (9.9 per game) and was first in assists (121) and minutes played (31.3 per game). this season; four seniors and five sophomores that played significant minutes last year, plus two red-shirt freshmen, said Coach Dolan. There is good chemistry among the returners and they all work hard and play well together. This group really bought into their roles last season and we will be as good as our chemistry allows us to be. Guard Alex Huisman and pointguard Brad Arnold will compete for the Peacocks this season after sitting out the season as red-shirt freshmen. Both Huisman and Arnold gained valuable experience last season and will compete this season for minutes. Newcomers to Upper Iowa include sophomore point-guard Martinez Martin, who spent one year at Arkansas-Fort Smith Junior College where he won a NJCAA National Championship, and redshirt freshman point-guard Dylan The final returning letter winner for the Peacocks is sophomore Alex Kramer. Kramer Sophomores Chris Sullivan, left, and Matt Lesan, above. provided Upper Iowa with an athletic forward coming off the bench Diedrich, who spent his first collegiate season red-shirting at Des and played a significant role in last season s success, as he averaged 19.1 minutes per game as a (DMACC). 9 performer Jude Roybal. Freshman guards Austin Emerson, Jared Herzberg, and Keith Steffeck, will provide the Peacocks with scoring ability, quickness and height on the perimeter as they look to challenge for minutes during their first collegiate season. Rounding out the freshmen class is Mark Lafrenz and Jake Shonka who provide Upper Iowa with additional height and skill at the post position. They are both comfortable facing the basket and have the ability to put the ball on the floor and attack the rim with penetration. Overall, the eight newcomers are extremely skilled individuals and should provide Coach Dolan with depth at each position. Like all coaches I am very high on our incoming class. This new group adds to our depth and athleticism. There is a lot of talent in these young men and now they just need to figure out how hard they must play every second, said Coach Dolan. Four years from now this group could leave an impressive stamp on the Upper Iowa Basketball Program. The season welcomes four new universities into the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). Augustana College (S.D.), University of Minnesota-Duluth, St. Cloud State, and Minnesota State-Mankato will all be competing in their first season as members of the NSIC. All four schools are former members of the North Central Conference, which decided to disband following the season. We are Sophomore Dan Bestul very excited about the four additions to the NSIC. They make a strong basketball conference, a premier basketball conference. As a program, we talk to our players everyday about how we want to compete for conference, regional, and national championships. I can t think of a better way to prepare to achieve those goals than playing the level of competition we have to play night-in and night-out in the NSIC, said Coach Dolan. In addition to an already challenging NSIC schedule, Upper Iowa will play five non-conference road games, which includes three Division I opponents. After opening the regular season on the road at Drury University in Springfield, Missouri, the Peacocks will play two straight road games against Division I foes; the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and South Dakota State University. After the first of the year, Upper Iowa will travel to a newly established Division I school, the University of North Dakota, in a rematch of last season s contests. The Peacocks final non-conference game will take place before Christmas against Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) opponent, the University of M i s s o u r i - S t. Louis. Simply put, if you want to be the best you have to play the best. This is a chall e n g i n g schedule, but I believe our y o u n g team is up to the c h a l - l e n g e, s a i d C o a c h Dolan. While the Peacocks are still y o u n g Senior Storm Schmitt this season, in large part to the amount of freshman and sophomores on the squad, Coach Dolan is optimistic about the future due to the success and experience that his young team gained from last season. This year s edition of Peacock Basketball will be young and fun. They are great young men who enjoy playing the game. I can t tell you how many games we will win or lose, but we will compete every second we step onto the basketball court and continue to improve. This team has a bright future as their careers move forward; they are going to be a lot of fun to coach over the next couple of years. 9

In the spring of 1992 the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) was formed out of the merger of the NIC, the men s conference, and the women s Northern Sun Conference (NSC). The NSC had existed since The NSIC is currently made up of institutions from Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North and South Dakota. In the academic year, the NSIC expanded to a 14-team league with the addition of Augustana College, University of Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota State University, Mankato and St. Cloud State University. Since 1932, various institutions have competed in the NSIC. Bemidji State University, Minnesota State University Moorhead and Winona State University are charter members and have remained in the conference for the 76 years of its existence. Minnesota State University, Mankato and St. Cloud State were also charter members, but left the league in 1981 (MSU left the league in 1969 and returned in 1977). The University of Minnesota Duluth, which departed the league in through seasons, was also an original member. Other current members joined in later years: Southwest Minnesota State University in 1969, Northern State University in 1978, Wayne State College (Nebraska) in 1998, Concordia University-St. Paul and the University of Minnesota, Crookston in 1999, the University of Mary and Upper Iowa University in 2006 and Augustana College in The University of Minnesota, Morris became a league member in 1966, however, the Cougars opted for the NCAA Division III ranks in Michigan Tech was part of the NIC from 1969 to 1977 as well. Before the NSIC became eligible for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championship competition in 1995, its member institutions had an extremely rich tradition in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The NIC s and NSC s tenure in the NAIA included several national championship teams and individuals as well as many national qualifiers. The NSIC has gained national recognition in recent years as three teams have won National Championships. Winona State men s basketball dynasty made three straight trips to the NCAA Division II National Championship game, winning the 2006 and 2008 games and losing the 2007 game on last second shot. During that period they won an NCAA record 57 consecutive games. Concordia University St. Paul garnered the first women s title in 2007 as its women s volleyball team won the National Championship. Since 2000, the NSIC has participated in one of two officially-sanctioned NCAA Division II football bowl games in the country. Dating back to 1948, the Mineral Water Bowl is hosted by the Quarterback Club of Excelsior Springs, Mo. The game matches the highestfinishing team from the NSIC not selected for the NCAA Division II playoffs against the highest-finishing team from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) not participating in the NCAA Division II playoffs. The first NSIC/MIAA meeting in 2000 marked the Mineral Water Bowl s inaugural year of the Division II era. Winona State defeated Missouri Western State, 43-41, in triple overtime, marking the Warriors first-ever postseason win at the Division II level. The league gears up for the upcoming academic year with the annual NSIC Summer Kickoff Event the last weekend in July. The event includes the NSIC Golf Tournament, Hall of Fame Banquet, officiating clinics and meetings involving the conference leadership. The Northern Sun Showcase television program returns to the airwaves again on Fox Sports Net North. Also, the Northern Sun Spotlight radio show will air on stations throughout the Midwest for 20 weeks during sports season. Over the years the NSIC, comprised of schools of modest size, has provided extremely competitive intercollegiate athletic programs for its members. Although the programs are not designed to be equal to Division I athletics, many former NSIC athletes have distinguished themselves in national and international competition. Each member school emphasizes the educational, entertainment and unifying value of sports while pointing with pride to the many advantages to be gained by attending these colleges and universities. As some affiliated with the conference have coined, the NSIC quite possibly is, the most competitive conference in NCAA Division II. 34

42 Upper Iowa University Athletic Hall of Fame The idea for an athletic hall of fame was proposed in 1978, but it was not acted upon until 1980 under the Darcy C. Coyle administration when the first class was inducted. The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to recognize and honor the outstanding achievements of Upper Iowa University athletes, coaches and officials. Two charter members remain on the Hall of Fame committee today. They are Braulic Cabby Caballero and Bill Pro Prochaska. Pro designed the etched plaque that is displayed, along with the Hall of Fame inductees photos, in the Hall of Fame Lounge in Dorman Gymnasium. After this year s honorees are officially inducted, our Hall of Fame will have 150 members. We look forward to inducting many more individuals to our Hall of Fame in the coming years. We thank all of our inductees for many wonderful memories and for their dedication and loyalty, through the good and the tough times, to Upper Iowa University and our athletic teams.
