3 Indiana Basketball GAME 13 - IOWA (1) 3 FIVE ON THE FLOOR For a minute midway in the first half against NSU, Coach Tom Crean put five freshmen on the floor together for the first time this season (Pritchard, Williams, Jones III, Moore and Story). CREAN KEEPS STREAK ALIVE With the win against NSU, Tom Crean became the ninth straight head coach in IU history to win his first game as head coach of the Hoosiers. Those coaches include Branch McCracken (1938) Harry C. Good (1943), Lou Watson (1966), Jerry Oliver (1969), Bob Knight (1972), Mike Davis (2000), Kelvin Sampson (2006), Dan Dakich (2008) and Crean (2008). Crean also joined elite company by winning his second game as Hoosier head coach on Tuesday against IUPUI. Of the coaches listed above, only Sampson and Good failed to win their second game with the Hoosiers. FOR OPENERS The Hoosiers have won 24 straight home openers and are in their first game of the season all-time in Bloomington after defeating Northwestern State. IU also has now won 11 straight season openers. NCAA UPDATE The NCAA Committee on Infractions accepted Indiana s self-imposed sanctions (which have been completed) and placed the program on three years probation following a 13 month investigation of former IU Coach Kelvin Sampson and assistant coach Rob Senderhoff. Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie and senior officials in the Department of Athletics said that for the most part they are satisfied with the conclusions contained in the final report of the NCAA s Committee on Infractions, which was released today (Nov. 25). From the very beginning of these proceedings, we cooperated fully with the NCAA and, in fact, imposed severe recruiting penalties on our men s basketball program, McRobbie said. Although I still believe the failure to monitor charge was unjustified, I am glad that the NCAA has accepted our self-imposed penalties with no further sanctions except a threeyear probationary period. Coach Tom Crean said, I am happy that the NCAA has accepted our self-imposed sanctions and it now appears that we will be able to put this unpleasant chapter behind us and move IU basketball forward in a positive way. Under the terms of probation, which runs through Nov. 24, 2011, IU will be required to continue to develop and implement a comprehensive educational program on NCAA recruiting and eligibility rules for all coaches and their staffs and report annually to the NCAA on progress and participation. 5 Indiana Basketball GAME 13 - IOWA (1) 5 SCHUTZ REJOINS BASEBALL Sophomore Kipp Schutz was injured in pracgtice last week and will rejoin the baseball team when it begins practice later this month after averaging 1.0 points in six games. He hit a pair of free throws against Saint Joseph s in seven minutes of play. He joined the team this year and is an outfielder for the IU baseball team. He played seven minutes against Wake Forest and had an assist and a steal. He had two free throws against Gonzaga and his first rebound against TCU. He was invited to join the team after taking part in a three-point shooting contest that featured the school s baseball team and the basketball team. DIVISION I EXPERIENCE The Indiana men s basketball team will be one of the least experienced teams in the history of Division I basketball. Of the 16 players on the roster, just four have seen action in a game at the Division I level before the start of the season. In addition to returnees Kyle Taber and Brett Finkelmeier, Devan Dumes and Jeremiah Rivers have also played at this level. Dumes played at Eastern Michigan as a freshman before transferring to Vincennes for his sophomore campaign. At EMU, he averaged 8.1 points and 2.0 rebounds, including a season-high 19 points against Ohio. He had 16 points against Tom Crean and Marquette for EMU. Rivers comes to Indiana after playing his first two seasons at Georgetown. As a freshman, the Hoyas reached the Final Four with Rivers playing in 34 games. DEFENSIVE STOP In two Hoosier wins (IUPUI and Chaminade) this season, Indiana made two defensive stops in the final seconds against shots that would have either tied the game or given its opponent the lead. Tom Pritchard blocked a three-point field goal attempt at the buzzer against IUPUI, and the Hoosiers put enough team pressure against Chaminade to force an off-balance three-pointer at the buzzer. Gordon, who set the Big Ten freshman scoring record with 669 points, became the first freshman in school history to earn All-American honors and was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. He has started 18 games this season and is averaging 10.4 points per game. LIPSCOMB POSTGAME NOTES The Hoosiers played in front of a season-high 14,827 fans on Sunday night in Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers started Verdell Jones III, Devan Dumes, Nick Williams, Tom Pritchard and Kyle Taber for the third time this season and the first time since the opening two games. The Hoosiers are 2-1 when starting the quintet. Taber made his fifth straight start and Jones III started for the first time since the Cornell game on Nov. 30. With the game tied at the 12:32 mark in the first half, IU scored 21 unanswered points over the next 5:31. The run was part of a larger 30-4 run over a 9:34 stretch after Lipscomb jumped out to a 10-5 advantage with 16:35 left. Devan Dumes scored three times from downtown during the 21-0 run and finished the first half with 11 points on 4-for-4 shooting. Five Hoosiers contributed points over the stretch and IU went 8-for-10 from the floor, including four three-point field goals. When Daniel Moore entered the game at the 11:23 mark of the first half, the Hoosiers held a advantage and Moore quickly helped the Hoosiers add to that. In his eight minutes of action in the opening 20 minutes, he finished with five points, six assists (just one turnover), four rebounds and two steals. IU s 44 first-half points were its second-highest total of the season (51 vs. Chaminade) and its third most prolific 20 minutes this year. The Hoosiers held the Bison to just one field goal during an 11:20 stretch (17:42-6:22) in the opening stanza. Indiana shot 62.1 percent (18-for-29) from the floor in the first half, its third half over 60 percent on the season and its second-best output (70.4 vs. Chaminade). Our coaches worked extremely hard to build on relationships that we already had and to build new ones and continue to show people why Indiana was a perennial power year-in and year-out. The tradition of Indiana and the opportunity to play right away, the Big Ten conference, the national television schedule we have is only replaced by the fact that young students can come in here and get a world-class education. Head Coach Tom Crean had a 100 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in his nine years at Marquette, as all 26 seniors graduated and earned a degree under his leadership. Tom Crean, who averaged over 20 wins a season in nine years at Marquette and led the Golden Eagles to five NCAA Tournament appearances including the 2003 Final Four, was named the 28th head basketball coach in Indiana University history, on April 2. In each of his final seven seasons, Crean s Marquette team s posted at least 19 wins and earned a postseason berth. Over those seven years, he compiled an aggregate record of (.702). He is a two-time recipient of the Ray Meyer Conference USA, NABC District XI and USBWA District V Coach of the Year awards, and in 2003 won the Coach Clair Bee Award as well as being named a finalist for the Naismith National Coach of the Year Award. Overall, he was in nine years with the Golden Eagles. Crean built the Marquette program to the level where it has remained one of college basketball s best since Since November 2001, the Golden Eagles spent 81 weeks in the rankings, including all but one week of the season, as the squad was ranked as high as 10th by the AP. In his nine years with the Golden Eagles, Crean s teams earned five NCAA Tournament bids, one more than the previous four Marquette coaches had in the 16 years prior to his arrival. In his nine seasons in Milwaukee, Golden Eagles players earned 22 All-Conference selections and grasped the program s first conference player of the year award, when Dwayne Wade won Conference USA s top honor in Wade also went on to become the first Marquette player since 1978 to be named an Associated Press first team All-American and finalist for the John R. Wooden Award. In , Crean s squad put together a season and earned the No. 6 seed in the NCAA South Regional. The Golden Eagles topped Kentucky in the first round and lost a heartbreaker to No. 3 seed Stanford in overtime to come up just shy of a trip to the Sweet 16. MU finished tied for fifth in the BIG EAST with an 11-7 conference record. Marquette had three All-BIG EAST selections as Lazar Hayward, Dominic James and Jerel McNeal all picked up second team accolades. MU was one of just two teams in the 16-squad BIG EAST to have three players selected to the first and second teams. James was a first team all-conference selection in as well, while McNeal was named the conference s Defensive Player of the Year. In 2006, Steve Novak was a unanimous first team allconference selection and went on to be selected by the Houston Rockets in the NBA Draft. That followed Travis Diener s All-America selection in 2005, joining Wade as Golden Eagles to earn the recognition under Crean s direction. Diener was selected 38th overall by the Orlando Magic in the 2005 Draft and played last year for the Indiana Pacers. In Marquette s first two years in the BIG EAST, the Golden Eagles posted 20-plus wins and finished in the conference s top four in both campaigns. Marquette also picked up NCAA Tournament bids and won 10 conference games in both years. MU had strength in regular-season tournaments as well, winning the CBE Classic in by topping Texas Tech and Duke and taking the Great Alaska Shootout in The Golden Eagles earned trips to the National Invitation Tournament in both and , their final two seasons in Conference USA. The Golden Eagles finished the regular season ranked No. 9 by the Associated Press and No. 6 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 poll and their.818 winning percentage was the program s best since Wade also was selected in the first round of the NBA Draft by the Miami Heat later that year. Crean s breakthrough season came in , as he coached Marquette to a 26-7 record and the team s first NCAA Tournament appearance since The 26 victories were the third-most all-time and represented the program s first 20-win season since The Golden Eagles secured 13 conference victories, the most in program history, and posted an undefeated home season at In each of his first two years with MU, the Golden Eagles won 15 games and finished in the top four of the C-USA standings. Crean also served as the Spartans recruiting coordinator, where he routinely lured some of the nation s top talent to East Lansing, including two-time Big Ten Player of the Year Mateen Cleaves and two-time first team All-Big Ten selection Morris Peterson. In Crean s four years on Izzo s staff, the Spartans put together an record and made four consecutive postseason appearances, including a trip to the 1999 Final Four.
