Michigan State increased its lead to 10 points at 56-46, with 3:46 remaining. A 3-pointer by Bassett brought the Hoosiers to within six at the 3:00 mark, but that was as close as Indiana would come. Junior D.J. White pulled down 10 rebounds to lead IU and also added two blocks to go along with nine points. Stemler scored seven points and grabbed six boards, five on the offensive end. IU shot 35.4 percent (17-of-48) from the floor, while Michigan State shot 54.5 percent (18-of-33). 2 INDIANA BASKETBALL The Northwestern Game - Feb. 28, THE INDIANA-NORTHWESTERN SERIES Indiana and Northwestern face off for the 148th time overall and the first time this season on Wednesday evening. The Hoosiers lead the all-time series, , although the teams have split the last six meetings. IU has lost three straight games in Evanston, with its last victory coming on Jan. 2, a triumph. Prior to the last six meetings, Indiana ran off 26 straight victories and 56 of the previous 59 contests in the series. Last season, the teams only met once and the Hoosiers claimed a victory in Bloomington on Feb. 1. Indiana Head Coach Kelvin Sampson has never faced the Wildcats in his career. Below is a look at the last five meetings between Indiana and Northwestern: Date Outcome Location Jan. 17, 2004 W, Bloomington Feb. 25, 2004 L, Evanston Jan. 5, 2005 L, Evanston March 5, 2005 W, Bloomington Feb. 1, 2006 W, Bloomington SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN Northwestern enters Wednesday evening with a overall mark and a 2-12 record in Big Ten play. The Wildcats are 10-7 on their home court, but they are just 1-6 in Evanston during conference action. Freshman forward Kevin Coble and fifth-year senior forward Tim Doyle are the only NU players in double figures. Coble is pouring in 13.3 points per game and leads the club with 5.2 rebounds per contest in 30.5 minutes. Doyle sits at 11.5 points and is tops on the team with 4.9 assists in 34.9 minutes. He is also the lone Wildcat to start all 28 games. Northwestern is coached by Bill Carmody, who is in his seventh season with the Wildcats and his 11th overall campaign. Carmody is (.463) at NU and (.581) in his career. He spent four seasons at Princeton prior to Northwestern. LAST TIME VS. NORTHWESTERN Led by three players in double figures, the No. 21/22 Hoosiers improved to 13-5 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten with a victory over Northwestern on Feb. 1, 2006, on Branch McCracken Court at Assembly Hall. The win marked the 13th straight home conference victory for IU and the 34th consecutive win over NU in Bloomington. At the half, Indiana led the Wildcats, Northwestern's Vedran Vukusic led all first-half scorers with 10 points, while Roderick Wilmont led the Hoosiers with eight points followed by Marco Killingsworth with six points and five boards. Wilmont led all scorers with a career-high 23 points, while Robert Vaden, who tied his career mark in rebounds with nine, scored all of his 11 points in the second half. Errek Suhr tallied 10 points and etched a career high in assists with five. Killingsworth led the Hoosier onslaught on the boards with 12, one shy of his career high. Additionally, the Hoosiers outrebounded Northwestern, 35-22, while shooting 51 percent (25- of-49) from the field, 38 percent from behind the arc (10-of-26) and an impressive 70 percent (12-of-17) from the foul line. Led by Suhr, IU tallied 20 points off the bench compared to the Wildcats' 12. NORTHWESTERN LAST TIME OUT David Teague scored 26 points, and Purdue survived a late charge from Northwestern on Saturday, Feb. 24, to post its second road win of the season with a victory. Tim Doyle led a 19-7 run that had the Wildcats within with 36.7 seconds to play, scoring 18 of his career-high 26 points in the second half. But Purdue, which had missed the front end of two one-and-bonus situations earlier, made 2-of-4 from the line in the final moments to end a five-game losing streak to Northwestern. Freshman Kevin Coble matched his career high with 24 points, scoring 13 of those in the first half for INSIDE THE GAME SERIES FACTS All-Time Series Indiana leads, Last Meeting IU, Feb. 1, 2006 (H) STATS IU Category NU Points Per Game Points Allowed Per Game Scoring Difference FG Percentage Opp. FG Percentage Point FG Percentage Opp. 3-Point FG Percentage Free Throw Percentage Rebounding Rebounding Margin Assists Per Game Turnovers Per Game Steals Per Game Blocks Per Game NOTES OF INTEREST This is the fourth and final road test in a five-game span for Indiana. Bassett hit 7-of-12 from the field, 4-of-6 from 3- point range and 7-of-8 from the free throw line to go along with five assists in 34 minutes. He is third on the team, averaging 10.5 points in Big Ten play, sits third in league games hitting 47.6 percent from beyond the arc and is fifth in conference games with a 1.43 assist/turnover ratio. After getting his feet wet through his first eight collegiate games, where he averaged 5.5 points in 21.9 minutes on 31.4 percent shooting and 25.0 percent from 3-point range, the Terre Haute, Ind., native has INDIANA S RECORD WHEN... picked up the pace. He is averaging 11.2 points (third on the team) in 28.1 minutes, while shooting 43.6 percent overall and a team-best 49.2 percent from beyond the arc in the last 19 games. Bassett has recorded double digits 14 times this season, including 12 times in the 19-game stretch, doing most of his work in the second half. In the 14 games, Bassett leads the team with 8.6 second-stanza points and is shooting 54.3 percent from the field and 88.6 from the charity stripe. In the first 20 minutes, Bassett s numbers are reduced to 5.4 points, 41.0-percent shooting and 71.4 from the free throw line. He is hot from beyond the arc in both halves, hitting 59.3 in the second stanza and 56.5 in the opening 20. TALE OF TWO HALVES IU entered the locker room with a lead at Michigan State (Feb. 24). In the opening stanza, the Hoosiers held the Spartans to 41.2-percent shooting and 25 percent from 3-point range, trailed on the boards 17-13, and forced 14 turnovers to just six of their own. The second 20 minutes saw MSU explode with 46 points on 68.8 percent overall and 60 percent (3-of-5) from deep. IU turned the ball over 10 times to nine Spartan miscues and Michigan State held a 14-8 advantage on the glass. Hoosier junior guard A.J. Prior to the U of I game, Indiana started the same five in its first nine Big Ten contests in Earl Calloway, Wilmont, D.J. White, Stemler, and Bassett. White is the lone Hoosier to start all 27 games this season. See the chart on page eight for a game-by-game breakdown of starting lineups. ON THE ROAD Indiana is 2-8 on the road this season. In its two road wins, IU has averaged 80.5 points, shot 46.5 percent from the floor, 44.2 percent from downtown and 82.1 percent from the free throw line with a 1.5 assist/turnover margin over its opponents. In the eight losses, those numbers dip to 58.9 points per game, 39.0 percent from the floor, 35.1 percent from 3-point range and 71.5 percent from the charity stripe with a 0.81 assist/turnover margin. 5 INDIANA BASKETBALL The Northwestern Game - Feb. 28, seven turnovers against Minnesota (Feb. 21). Indiana has recorded fewer than 10 turnovers in a game seven times this season. However, the Hoosiers reverted back to their bad habits at Michigan State (Feb. 24), posting eight assists to 16 turnovers in their loss. During the aforementioned four games and the MSU outing (2-3 record), Indiana owned a 0.74 assist/turnover ratio. In comparison, the previous 10 tilts (8-2), IU posted a 1.30 assist/turnover ratio. FINDING CONSISTENCY While the defense and rebounding has shown up all season, there is quite a disparity in Indiana s offensive numbers in the team s 18 wins and nine losses. In the Hoosiers victories, the team is averaging 76.9 points, shooting 48.0 percent from the floor and 39.4 percent from beyond the arc. In the team s losses, those numbers drop to 58.4 points per game, 39.2-percent shooting and 34.0 percent from 3-point range. Breaking it down even further, junior guard A.J. Ratliff (10.9 ppg in wins, 6.5 ppg in losses), junior forward Lance Stemler (7.9, 4.4), and senior guards Earl Calloway (10.8, 7.6) and Roderick Wilmont (12.8, 9.9) show significant scoring outputs in wins vs. losses. DEFENDING THE TREY After holding each of their first eight Big Ten opponents under 27 percent from 3-point range, the Hoosiers have allowed five of their last six opponents to shoot over 35 percent, including Purdue (8-of-17, 47.1) and Michigan (8-of-14, 57.1). In the first eight league games, opponents shot 23.3 percent from downtown. In the last six Big Ten contests, that percentage has risen to 41.6 percent. Despite the recent surge, Indiana still leads the league in 3-point field goal percentage defense overall this season, limiting opponents to just 30.7 percent. However, in Big Ten games, IU has fallen from the top spot. The Hoosiers rank third behind Illinois (27.5) and Michigan State (29.3), surrendering 31.8 percent. Overall this campaign, Indiana has held 13 opponents under 30 percent and nine at 25 percent or less. KNOCKING DOWN THE TREY Four times in Big Ten play Indiana has hit at least 10 3-point field goals, including 10-of-18 (55.6 percent) in the team s win over Michigan on Jan. 27. The Hoosiers hit a season-high 14 at Penn State (Jan. 13) - tying the eighth most in school history - on 34 attempts, which matches the third-highest total in the Hoosier record book. IU hit 10 3-pointers against Purdue (Jan. 10) and at Ohio State (Jan. 2), shooting 54.5 percent (12-of-22) vs. the Buckeyes and 50.0 percent in the win over Purdue. Seven times this season IU has hit at least 10 treys, posting a 6-1 record in those games, and 13 times Indiana has nailed at least eight, including its loss at Michigan State, where it lost for just the second time in 13 tries when hitting eight or more from downtown. The Hoosiers have raised their season 3-point percentage to 37.8, which is the second-best mark in the Big Ten, and rank second in the conference averaging pointers per game. Indiana leads the league in Big Ten games averaging 7.50 treys per game and shooting at a 39.2 percent from deep. SPARK PLUG SUHR Senior guard Errek Suhr received his first career Big Ten start and the third start of his career at Michigan (Feb. 17), filling in for the injured Earl Calloway. The Bloomington native ran the Hoosier offense and scored a season-high 10 points his fifth career double-digit performance on 4-of-6 shooting. He also dished out four assists and matched a career high with 26 minutes. He followed that up with a standout defensive performance against Minnesota (Feb. 21), taking three charges in 15 minutes, and posted 22 minutes at Michigan State (Feb. 24). In the last three games, Suhr has averaged 21 minutes and he has seen action in 24 of the team s 27 games this season. SHAW STEPPING UP After a quick start to the Big Ten season, redshirt freshman Joey Shaw struggled to find minutes and a rhythm over the next 10 games. Shaw opened the conference slate with a then-career high 16 points at Ohio State (Jan. 2), and poured in a career-best 19 points against Purdue (Jan. 10). In the two games, Shaw averaged a team-best 17.5 points per game, shooting 64.7 percent (11-of-17) from the floor, 66.7 percent (6- of-9) from 3-point range and 87.5 percent (7-of-8) from the free throw line. All of this came in just 20.5 minutes of action. In the next 10 games, Shaw averaged 2.4 points, 1.0 rebounds and 10.5 minutes per game. Against Minnesota (Feb. 21), the Glendale, Ariz., native provided 20 aggressive minutes off the bench, collecting seven points, six rebounds and a pair of assists. He ESPN/USA TODAY POLL 1. 6 INDIANA BASKETBALL The Northwestern Game - Feb. 28, Bloomington. In its seven Big Ten home games, IU is outscoring its opponents (13.1 margin). The Hoosiers are averaging 74.7 points and shooting 47.2 percent on their home court while those numbers fall to 66.5 and 43.0 on the road or at neutral sites. Defensively, Indiana is limiting opponents to 58.9 points and 47.2-percent shooting at home compared to 65.7 points and 42.6 percent away from Assembly Hall. HOT ROD After scoring in double figures nine of the last 11 games, including five straight, Roderick Wilmont did not break into the scoring column at Michigan State (Feb. 24). He struggled to 0-for-6 from the field and 0- for-4 from 3-point range. Prior to the MSU game, Wilmont led the club with 15.7 points per game, three 20-point games and nine contests in double figures in the 11 games dating back to his career-high 25 points at Penn State (Jan. 13). He was shooting 45.1 percent from downtown and 45.3 percent overall. Wilmont has hit at least five treys in a game four times this season and has reached the 20-point mark seven times in his career, as the Hoosiers are 6-1 in those contests. He has reached double figures 16 times this season and led Indiana in scoring seven times this year (IU owns a 6-1 record). BIGGER, STRONGER, FASTER Junior guard A.J. Ratliff netted a season-high 20 points in the team s win over No. 2/2 Wisconsin on Jan. 31, including 18 points in the second half. Ratliff went 7-for-9 from the field 4-of-6 from downtown in the game, with a 6-for-7 performance in the closing half. He added 15 at Iowa (Feb. 3) and returned to double figures for the first time in four games with 10 in IU s victory over Minnesota (Feb. 21). The Indianapolis native came back with his second straight doubledigit game with 10 points (all in the first half) at Michigan State (Feb. 24). Since Ratliff injured his left wrist against Ball State on Dec. 30, he has actually improved his shooting numbers. Over his last 13 games since his return, Ratliff is shooting 51.8 percent from the field and 47.5 percent from 3-point range, despite a 2-for-9 (all 3- point shots) effort at Michigan on Feb. 17. Before the injury, Ratliff s numbers were decidedly lower, as he shot 42.0 percent overall and 30.8 percent from downtown. Ratliff led the team in bench scoring in five straight games, including 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting at Iowa on Feb. 3, and seven out of eight contests before starting at Purdue on Feb. 15. He returned to his role off the bench at Michigan and led the team with eight points before starting vs. Minnesota and Michigan State. His 56.1 percent from the field and 47.5 percent from downtown in conference contests rank sixth and fourth in the league, respectively. BIG BEN For the second straight game, sophomore Ben Allen came in off the bench and added double-digit minutes vs. Minnesota (Feb. 21). After posting 17 minutes at Michigan (Feb. 17) his first 10-plus minute game since the Big Ten opener at Ohio State (Jan. 2) Allen received 13 minutes in IU s victory over the Golden Gophers. He also added four points, denting the scoring column for the first time since the IUPUI game on Dec. 22. BALANCED ATTACK One of the most impressive facets about this Hoosier team is its offensive distribution. Eight different players have led the team in scoring, five times four players have scored in double digits and on four occasions five players have posted 10-plus points. The Hoosiers are 9-1 when at least four players score in double figures and undefeated when five post 10 or more. Junior guard A.J. Ratliff poured in 20 points off the bench against Wisconsin (Jan. 31), while junior forward D.J. White added 15 for the Hoosiers. It marked the fifth time this year that Indiana has had a player off the bench lead the team in scoring. Overall, five players are averaging between points, led by White. Senior guards Roderick Wilmont (11.9) and Earl Calloway (9.8), Ratliff (9.5), and freshman guard Armon Bassett (9.5) round out the group. FINDING THE RANGE After firing only five 3-pointers over the previous three games, senior Roderick Wilmont put up five against Minnesota (Feb. 21) and four at Michigan State (Feb. 24). Wilmont hit three of the treys and finished with 16 points vs. the Golden Gophers. Before the aforementioned three-game stretch, Wilmont attempted at least five 3-pointers in seven straight contests. He averages just over five per game this season. Against Penn State on Jan. 13, the Miramar, Fla., native set career highs with 25 points and 12 rebounds for the second double-double of his career and this campaign. Wilmont hit seven treys (second most in IU history) in 17 attempts (most in Indiana lore). He recorded 20 of the team s 40 points on 6-of-12 shooting from beyond the arc in the first half. The last time a Hoosier scored 20 points in a half came on Jan. 17, 2006 vs. Illinois (Marco Killingsworth). Wilmont also became the first IU player to ring up six 3s in a half since Bracey Wright on Dec. 29, 2003 at North Texas. SHOWING SOME SWAGGER Junior forward D.J. White carded his third 20-point game in Big Ten play at Purdue (Feb. 15) and his first since scoring 21 at Connecticut (Jan. 20). White led the Hoosiers with a game-high 20 points, on 7-of-11 from the floor, and eight rebounds in 37 minutes. White has six 20-point games this season and nine in his career. He also has 18 double-figure scoring efforts this season (IU is 13-5 in those games) and point outings in 59 career games (IU is in those games), including 17 in 28 minutes against Minnesota on Feb. 21. In Big Ten games, the Tuscaloosa, Ala, native is showing why he was a preseason All-Big Ten selection, leading the team with 13.7 points (12th in the league), 6.8 rebounds (fourth), 1.79 blocks (third) and is shooting 50.7 percent (ninth) in 31.4 minutes. He has recorded three 20-point games, 19 games in double figures and two 10-plus rebounding outings. Overall, White leads the Hoosiers with 13.8 points (11th), 7.0 boards (fourth), 2.22 blocks (second) and 51.2-percent shooting (sixth) in 30.8 minutes per tilt. IN THE POLLS After moving up five spots in the Feb. 12 ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll to No. 19 and reentering the Associated Press Top 25 at No. 24, the Hoosiers fell out of the Feb. 19 polls and are currently BIG TEN STATS (ALL GAMES) Team Stats (IU In Top Five Only) - (through 2/25/07) Scoring Offense 3. 7 INDIANA BASKETBALL The Northwestern Game - Feb. 28, receiving votes in the A.P. Top 25. IU moved back into the polls on Jan. 22 for the first time since Feb. 6, Five of the Hoosiers opponents appear in the A.P. rankings and in the Coaches Poll. Indiana has already faced No. 1/1 Ohio State, No. 4/5 Wisconsin, No. 11/11 Southern Illinois, No. 14/14 Duke and No. 18/16 Butler this season, posting a 2-3 record. The Hoosiers have also faced Kentucky, Michigan State and Illinois, which are receiving votes in one or both of the polls. WINNING WAYS Picking up his 18th win of the season against Minnesota on Feb. 21, Indiana Head Coach Kelvin Sampson moved past Bob Knight and Branch McCracken for the second-most wins in a debut campaign for a Hoosier coach. Mike Davis holds the most victories for a first-year head coach, going during the season. Additionally, the Hoosiers won four of their first five conference games for the fifth straight season, and their 18-9 start is the best 27-game mark to open a campaign since the Final Four club jumped out of the gates with the same 18-9 mark. SAMPSON SINCE 2000 Since the season, Kelvin Sampsoncoached teams are (.655) in games decided by five points or fewer and (.893) when they score 70 points or more in a game, which Indiana accomplished in its win over Minnesota on Feb. 21. This season, 70 seems to be the magic number, as the Hoosiers are 16-1 when reaching the benchmark, with their only loss coming at Iowa (81-75) on Feb. 3. TOUGH LOSSES With the exception of their loss at Purdue on Feb. 15, the Hoosiers have not lost by double figures all season and have led in the second half in 25 of their 27 games this year. Eight of their nine losses have been sustained on the road (Duke, Kentucky, Ohio State, Illinois, Iowa, Purdue, Michigan and Michigan State) and one in a neutral setting (Butler). Ohio State (1/1), Duke (14/14) and Butler (18/16) appear in both of the current top 25s, while Michigan State, Kentucky and Illinois sit just outside of the polls. WALKING THE LINE Hitting 16-of-22 free throws at Michigan State (Feb. 24), the Hoosiers continued their upward climb at the charity stripe. Indiana is shooting 73.0 percent from the line in Big Ten games, which ranks fourth in the league. After opening conference play with a perfect 11-for-11 performance against Ohio State (Jan. 2), IU s first perfect shooting night from the free throw line since March 7, 1987, against Ohio State (18-for-18), the Hoosiers have been hot from the line. IU is 187-of- 256 from the foul line in league ballgames. Indiana nearly added a second perfect night in a non-conference battle with Connecticut (Jan. 23), hitting 20-of-21 (95.2 percent), including a perfect 10-of- 10 in the second half to seal the victory. Through the first nine games of the season, the Hoosiers shot 64.4 percent from the line. Since that time, Indiana is hitting 74.7 percent (18 games). WHITE OUT Along with senior Errek Suhr, junior forward Mike White netted his first career Big Ten start and his second of the season at Michigan (Feb. 17). After playing just five minutes and failing to dent the stat sheet in the first half, White poured in a career-best 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting with four rebounds in 10 minutes of action in the second stanza. The Springhill, La., native earned his third start of the year vs. Minnesota (Feb. 21), adding five points and three rebounds. Making his first career start, White put forth an impressive effort in the Hoosiers win at UConn on Jan. 20. Entering the game averaging just 8.6 minutes per game, White played a career-high 32 minutes and added eight points, four rebounds, one block and one steal. A 60.9-percent free throw shooter, White hit two critical free throws with 2:41 remaining to square the game at 66. LOCKING IT UP As was the case in its victory over Illinois (Feb. 10) in its previous outing at Assembly Hall, the Indiana defense tightened the screws coming down the stretch against Minnesota (Feb. 21). Leading with 11:45 to go, the Hoosiers held the Golden Gophers to just three field goals and 11 points the rest of the way en route to their victory. Illinois held a lead following a pair of Marcus Arnold free throws with 3:37 left. Those turned out to be the final points the Indiana defense would allow, as the Hoosiers scored the game s final seven points for a win. IU held the Fighting Illini without a field goal over the last 5:22, limiting them to six points from the charity stripe. Indiana hit 43.0 percent overall, 34.4 percent from beyond the arc and 68.8 from the foul line. En route to a 3-2 mark in November, the Hoosiers allowed 63.0 points, 39.6 percent shooting from the floor and 29.7 from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Indiana scored 72.0 points, shot 47.7 percent overall, 37.2 from 3-point range and 64.5 from the charity stripe. CRASHING THE BOARDS Indiana outrebounded Minnesota (33-26), snapping a four-game stretch where it trailed on the glass en route to a 1-3 record. However, the Hoosiers were outrebounded at Michigan State on Feb. 24 for the fourth time in five games. Despite its recent struggles, IU has gained a rebounding advantage 17 times this season (13-4 record,.765). Last year, IU won the rebounding battle only 12 times in 31 contests. The Hoosiers are averaging 33.2 boards per contest and hold a 2.0 advantage over their opponents this season. Indiana owns an average on the offensive glass. Junior forward D.J. White paces the Hoosiers with 7.0 rebounds per game, which ranks fourth in the league, and a 4.63 average on the defensive glass, which is third in the conference. This comes as no surprise, as Kelvin Sampsoncoached teams are known for their rebounding. They have outrebounded 47 of their last 63 opponents, posting a 38-9 (.809) record in the process. Sampson s teams have performed well on the offensive glass as well, including a 15-8 edge over Minnesota and an 11-8 advantage at MSU. Sampson-led clubs have outrebounded 42 of their last 55 opponents (29-13,.691) on the offensive end, including 15 this season (10-5,.667). TO THE DEPTHS IU has held an edge in bench scoring 17 times this season with five of those margins of 25 points or more. The Hoosiers enjoy a bench advantage this year (7.5 per game). Indiana has played at least nine players in 26 contests this season, used 10-or-more men 19 times and cleared the bench four times, including the Purdue game on Jan. 10. Eight players are averaging at least 10 minutes per contest, while senior Errek Suhr (9.8) and sophomore forward Ben Allen (9.3) are nearing the 10-minute mark. Led by redshirt freshman guard Joey Shaw s 19 points and junior guard A.J. Ratliff s 16, the Hoosiers tallied 46 points off the bench against Purdue (Jan. 10), outscoring the starters, 46-39, in one of its most lopsided advantages of the season (46-8). Shaw and Ratliff s combined 35 points came in 36 minutes (18 each). The duo shot 11-of-12 from the floor (91.6 percent), 6-of-6 from 3-point range, and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Overall, the bench shot 15-of- 19 (78.9 percent) for the game. EARL THE PEARL Before an injury forced him out of the Michigan game on Feb. 17, senior point guard Earl Calloway played an instrumental role in the Hoosiers posting a 12-4 record following the Kentucky game. Calloway poured in 10.4 points per game, averaged 29.8 minutes, shot 86.1 percent from the foul line to go along with 4.4 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 1.3 steals. Most important, he had a 1.94 assist/turnover ratio. Through the first eight games, the Atlanta native carded a 1.5 assist/turnover ratio, 3.8 assists and 8.6 points in 23.1 minutes per game. ON A ROLL Winning 13 of its last 19 games, Indiana has posted 70.0 points per game, shot 45.5 percent overall, 39.3 from 3-point range, 73.6 from the charity stripe and posted a 1.16 assist/turnover margin. Four Hoosiers have averaged over 10 points a game, led by junior forward D.J. White (13.7). Senior guard Roderick Wilmont (11.9), freshman guard Armon Bassett (11.2) and senior guard Earl Calloway (10.4) have averaged double figures. In the first eight games of the year, where IU posted a 5-3 mark, three players compiled double digits White (13.9), Wilmont (11.8) and junior forward Lance Stemler (10.4). Indiana did score 72.5 points per contest and shot 44.8 percent, but hit just 34.5 from deep and 65.0 percent from the foul line with a 0.9 assist/turnover margin. X FACTOR Freshman forward Xavier Keeling earned his first career start against Illinois on Feb. 10, becoming the 10th player to record at least one start this season. Keeling poured in six points, hitting all four of his free throws, in 13 minutes. BESTING THE BEST Indiana s victory over second-ranked Wisconsin was IU s first victory over a team ranked in the top two since March 31, 2002, when the Hoosiers beat No. 1 Duke, 74-73, in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. IU s last defeated a top-two opponent in Assembly Hall on Jan. 7, 2001 a victory over No. 1 Michigan State. Indiana improved to all-time against teams ranked in the top two, including an 8-10 mark vs. No. 2 foes. At Assembly Hall, IU is 5-3 against No. 2s (6-8 vs. teams ranked in the top two). WIN NO. 1,600 Indiana s win over Purdue on Jan. 10 marked the 1,600th victory for the program. Only 10 other programs can boast that accomplishment, including Kentucky, North Carolina, Kansas, Duke, Syracuse,

Seven of those blocks came in the first half, where the Hoosiers held the Boilermakers to just seven field goals. White led IU by tying his career high of five - all of which came in the first half. The Tuscaloosa, Ala., native sits eighth on IU s career list with 131. WHITE BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK Junior forward D.J. He hit 10-of-13 from the floor and added two blocks in 35 minutes. This came on the heels of a 14-point, 11-board performance at Penn State (Jan. 13). White became the first Hoosier since Killingsworth (March 10-11, 2006) to record back-toback double-doubles and has five this season and seven in his career. DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE Junior forward D.J. White and senior guard Roderick Wilmont registered double-doubles at Penn State. White netted 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Wilmont finished with career bests in points (25) and rebounds (12) for his second-career double-double. The last time Indiana had two players secure doubledoubles in the same game came on Jan. 17, 2001, when Kirk Haston (22 points and 13 rebounds) and Jared Jeffries (15 and 17) pulled off the feat vs. PSU. LOPSIDED VICTORIES With its win against Michigan State and victory against Purdue, Indiana recorded its largest margins of victory against both schools since During that season, the Hoosiers defeated the Boilermakers, , on Jan. 28 and posted a win over MSU on Feb. 19. Indiana followed those victories with its third straight double-digit conference win at Penn State (84-74). The last time IU won three straight conference games by 10-plus points came during the campaign. STIFLING D Indiana held Iowa to just 17 points in the first half and 31.8 percent. It marked the fewest single-half points IU has held an opponent to since Dec. 19, 2004, when the Hoosiers limited Missouri to 16 points in the first half. Iowa was held without a field goal for 8:25 (15:42 to 7:17) and went 0-for-6 during the span. Additionally, Indiana corralled the Big Ten s leading scorer, Adam Haluska, to just five points on 1-of-7 shooting in the opening 20 minutes. HAT TRICK Senior guard Earl Calloway (21), junior forward Lance Stemler (21) and freshman guard Armon Bassett (20) each reached the 20-point mark in IU s win over IUPUI. The last time a trio of Hoosiers accomplished that feat came on March 12, 1998, when Indiana knocked off Oklahoma, 94-87, in overtime in an NCAA Tournament first-round meeting. Andrae Patterson (26), A.J. Guyton (23) and Luke Recker (21) each scored 20-plus. DID YOU KNOW? Kelvin Sampson is one of six active coaches nationally to record at least 20 wins each of the last nine seasons. The others are Arizona s Lute Olson (19), Kentucky s Tubby Smith (13), Duke s Mike Krzyzewski (10), Syracuse s Jim Boeheim and Connecticut s Jim Calhoun (nine each). SHUTTING THE DOOR With the score tied at the 8:03 mark in the second half against Southern Illinois, the Hoosier defense took over and held SIU without a point over the next 4:39. During that span, IU scored 12 unanswered points to put away the scrappy Salukis. In fact, Indiana held Southern Illinois without a field goal for 9:22 in the second half and limited its second opponent this season under 50 points (Western Illinois 40). The last time IU held two opponents under 50 points in a season came back in POINTS HARD TO COME BY Both Indiana and Southern Illinois entered the Dec. 17 matchup holding opponents under 60 points and both defenses lived up to their billing. SIU - surrendering 51.8 points per game (second-lowest total in the country) - stepped off the court at the end of the first half with a edge. It marked the lowest combined first-half total at Assembly Hall since Dec. 8, 2004, when Indiana and Notre Dame combined to score 43 points. The Hoosiers held the Salukis to 47 points, nearly 12 below the 58.9 they had surrendered through their first eight ballgames. IU only mustered 57 points and the two teams combined 104 points signified the lowest total in a game on Branch McCracken Court since the aforementioned battle against the Fighting Irish (100 points). COMPLETE VICTORY Taking out Western Illinois in one of the most resounding wins in recent memory, Indiana posted many impressive superlatives. IU... - recorded its largest margin of victory since a win over Drake on Dec. 27, posted a school-record low three turnovers - hit a season-high 13 3-pointers - held WIU to 40 points, the lowest total in a game since Dec. 2, 1978, when the Hoosiers defeated Morehead State, limited Western to 19 second-half points, a season low - held the Leathernecks to 0-for-10 from the floor for the final 6:14 of the first half - minimized Western Illinois to 29 percent from the floor, which is a season-best for the Hoosier

Including this season, only five other coaches have posted 20 victories each of the last nine years: Lute Olson (16), Tubby Smith (13), Mike Krzyzewski (10), Jim Boeheim (nine) and Jim Calhoun (nine). Sampson's club was productive on the court and in the classroom. The squad posted a 3.14 grade point average (GPA) for the 2005 fall semester, setting a single-semester record for the 12-year Sampson era. Eight of the 12 team members recorded a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Sampson amassed 111 regular season Big 12 victories, the most in league history. He was (.694) in conference play since the formation of the Big 12 in Sampson also holds the Big 12 record for most combined regular season and conference tournament wins (he was ) as well as the mark for most overall wins by a conference coach since the Big 12 inception (he was ). Under Sampson's leadership, Oklahoma enjoyed one of the most successful three-year runs in school history from The Sooners were (.816), won three-straight Big 12 Tournament titles and advanced to the 2002 NCAA Final Four (before losing to Indiana in the national semifinals) and the 2003 NCAA Elite Eight. Sampson was named Oklahoma s coach on April 25, 1994, after seven successful seasons at Washington State. One of only four men to win 20 or more games in a single season in Washington State history, Sampson directed the Cougars to the 1992 National Invitation Tournament (NIT), and earned Pac 10 Conference Coach of the Year honors in the process. Sampson concluded his stay in Pullman by leading Washington State to a mark and the 1994 NCAA Tournament, the Cougars' first NCAA Tournament appearance in 11 years. Sampson served as an assistant coach at WSU from He began his head coaching career at the helm of the Montana Tech program from After spending the campaign as the interim head coach, Sampson led the Orediggers to a mark in his final four years. Montana Tech had won just 17 games in the three years combined prior to Sampson's arrival. He closed his Montana Tech tenure with three-straight Frontier League titles. He was the head coach of the 2004 USA Basketball World Championship for Young Men qualifying team that posted a 5-0 record and earned a gold medal in Halifax, Nova Scotia. That 2004 squad featured former Hoosier standout Bracey Wright and captured the United States first gold medal in the event since Sampson, San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich and Golden State Warriors coach Mike Montgomery were assistant coaches to George Karl on the 2002 USA Men's World Championship team in Indianapolis. That squad included current NBA stars Paul Pierce, Michael Finley, Elton Brand and Baron Davis. In the summer of 1995, Sampson served as head coach of the USA Men's Junior World Championship team that played in Larissa and Athens, Greece. That team featured current NBA players Vince Carter and Stephon Marbury. Sampson was an assistant coach to George Raveling on the 1994 USA Goodwill Games team that competed in St. Petersburg, Russia. Damon Stoudemire, Shawn Respert, Finley and Tim Duncan led that club to the bronze medal. Sampson began his USA Basketball tenure as the head coach of the 1993 Olympic Festival West team in San Antonio, Texas. Jerod Haase, Charles O'Bannon and Jerald Honeycutt helped that club to the silver medal. For each of the past two years, Sampson has been among the nation s top college coaches participating in Operation Hardwood - Hoops with the Troops, an eight-team U.S. Army troops' basketball tournament in Kuwait. In August of 2005, Sampson joined Michigan State s Tom Izzo, Alabama s Mark Gottfried, South Carolina s Dave Odom, Charlotte s Bobby Lutz, former Georgia Tech coach Bobby Cremins, former St. John s coach Mike Jarvis and ESPN analyst Jay Bilas for the debut event. This past May, Sampson, returned to Kuwait and directed his team to the tournament title, but the reward went well beyond the trophy. I met soldiers from the state of Indiana. When you greet them, you can just feel that kinship. They just want to stop and talk to you and ask questions about the team and how things are going. They were telling me the Indy 500 was that particular weekend, and were asking if I had ever been to the race. Even though they are racing fans, you can tell they are passionate about IU Basketball, which was great to see. There is such a sense of gratification when you go to bed at night, and a sense of excitement when you wake up in the morning. Last year's experience was amazing, but this one tops it. You just feel so good about what you are doing, and what you have been able to give back to these young men and women. Sampson-coached basketball teams are known for their competitiveness, discipline and unselfishness on the court as well as their strong presence in the local community. Not only do IU coaches and players make weekly appearances at local elementary schools to emphasize the value of reading and education, but they also spend an hour each Friday serving lunch at the Shalom Community Center. The Shalom Community Center is a daytime resource center for those experiencing poverty and homelessness. Sampson said that the outreach activities are just one component of the Hoosiers' broad-based program. "Indiana fans have such a passion for Hoosier basketball, which is why it is so important that we touch every base of the community," Sampson said. "It warms our players' and coaches' hearts to see the reception that they get from the elementary school students or how happy the visitors at the Shalom Center are to see us at lunch." Sampson was born on Oct. 5, 1955, in Laurinburg, N.C. He was raised in Pembroke, N.C. and was an allleague three-sport star (football, basketball and baseball) at Pembroke High School. He captained his high school basketball team for two years, coached by his father, John W. "Ned" Sampson. Sampson enrolled at Pembroke State University (now UNC Pembroke) where he earned four letters in basketball and three in baseball. He was a Dean's List student and received the Gregory Lowe Memorial Award as the school's outstanding physical education major as a senior. Sampson received bachelor's degrees in health and physical education and political science in 1978 and his master's degree in coaching and administration from Michigan State in During his stay in East Lansing, he served as a graduate assistant to Jud Heathcote. Sampson, who was inducted into the Montana Tech Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Pembroke State Hall of Fame in 1998, is married to the former Karen Lowery. They have one daughter, Lauren, and one son, Kellen. Lauren is an account executive with IU Sports Properties, a division of Learfield Communications. Kellen is a walk-on senior for the Oklahoma basketball team.
