The win also breaks a two-game conference losing streak and a two-game losing streak at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Just once this season has Marquette won two games in a row. On Nov , the Golden Eagles defeated Southern Utah and Syracuse in back-to-back games. Marquette looks for a second straight win in its matchup with Cincinnati. Scouting Cincinnati Cincinnati's eight-game winning streak came to an end last Monday as Louisville defeated the Bearcats, 72-58, in the Conference USA opener for both teams. Tammy Douglass recorded her third career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. K.B. Sharp added a career-high eight assists. Freshman Valerie King was held to only three points, but leads the team in scoring with 13.9 points per contest. The Bearcats remain undefeated at home (9-0), but needed overtime to keep that mark against Houston last Friday. Douglass hit a pair of free throws at the end to claim the win to improve to 11-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Two nights later, Cincinnati won on the road at South Florida. Getting 14 points from King, the Bearcats improved to 12-2 with the win over the Bulls. Cincinnati's eight game winning streak earlier in the year included the likes of Xavier, Dayton and Kentucky as the Bearcats extended their record to a favorable 10-1 at the time. King and Douglass are the Bearcats leading scorers, with 13.9 and 10.5 per game respectively. Cincinnati is hitting 44 percent of its shots and scoring 72 points per game. The 'Cats are dangerous from behind the three-point arc, hitting 39 percent. King is third on the team at 39.7 percent. Erin Hostetler leads the team at 42.3 percent and Merelena Dozier is second at Marquette, a dominating rebounding team, will battle on the glass with Cincinnati, who outrebounds its opponents by almost seven per game. On Jan. 9, 2000, the Golden eagles defeated the Bearcats by 17 points. Kristi Johnson scored a career high 20 points, hitting six three pointers in the win. One month and two days later, Marquette secured a 13-point win at the Shoemaker Center in Cincinnati. Johnson again scored in double figures with 12, but this time Abbie Willenborg added 16 points and Kieisha Oliver tossed in 17 as MU swept the season series. Series History: Marquette leads Scouting Louisville An even 7-7 on the year, Louisville has a 7-2 record in its last nine games after starting 0-5. The Cardinals struggled against a difficult schedule that included Santa Barbara, Texas and Western Kentucky. Louisville suffered its first league loss of the season when Houston handed the Cardinals an setback. The loss ended a five-game winning streak for the Cardinals and lowered their C-USA mark to 2-1. Louisville was led against Houston by freshman Sara Nord with 21 points and Mariu Sober with 12 points. Louisville shot just.375 from the floor, the first time in five games that the Cards have been held under 40 percent from the field. On New Year s Day, the Cardinals shocked then 10-1 Cincinnati at home, Tiana Ford scored 19 in the victory. In between the Cincinnati win and South Florida loss, the Cards handed South Florida a five-point defeat. Four players scored double figures, led by Sober s 18 and Nord s 17. Kara Kessans added 12 points while Ford scored a double-double in the win. Nord scores 14.8 points per game to lead the way for Louisville. The Cardinals are a high scoring team, with a 73.2 per game average. They hit 42 percent of their shots, but have given up totals nearly as high. Their defense is allowing 70.9 points per game and is allowing opponents to shoot 40.2 percent. Last season: Marquette won a pair of games from the Cardinals. On Jan. 7, 2000, Marquette beat Louisville by 10 points at home. Kiesha Oliver scored 17 points as the Golden Eagles began a five-game winning streak. On Feb. 13, Marquette took an 11-point decision at Louisville. Abbie Willenborg scored 17 points and Heidi Bowman grabbed nine rebounds in the win. Series History: Marquette leads, ,000 Point Club Last season, three Marquette players -- Abbie Willenborg, Lisa Oldenburg and Kiesha Oliver -- ended their careers with over 1,000 points. This season senior Heidi Bowman should join the 1,000-point club if she maintains her current pace. Just 15 players in Marquette history have scored at least 1,000 points while at MU. Needing 286 points this season, Bowman has 231 points for a total of 945 career points. Only one season in her career, however, has Bowman scored enough points in a season that would enable her to reach that feat. In , Bowman scored 331 points for the season (11.4 points per game). Last season, Bowman scored 258 points. However, Bowman is on pace to score 444 points this season, which would easily eclipse the 1,000-point mark for her. On her current 16.5 points per game pace, Bowman would score her 1,000th career point on Jan. 26 at Charlotte. Johnson Aims at Shooting, Assist Marks Junior Kristi Johnson has her sights on moving up on the all-time Marquette lists for a pair of shooting records and one for assists. After a hot shooting, 10-point game against Michigan, Johnson is currently fourth on the all-time three point field goals made list and has moved into fourth on the attempted list. Johnson has 108 career three point baskets and 327 career attempts. Next on the list of three pointers made is Courtney Romesiser with 152. Johnson would have to set a personal season best for threepointers in a season as she needs 44 to tie Romesiser. Johnson has moved into fourth in attempts with 327, passing Kiesha Oliver who launched 303 career trifecta attempts. With 149 attempts behind Kristin Maskala, it is unlikely that she will move up another spot this season. Also within reach for Johnson is the top-10 list for assists. Beginning the season, Johnson has 228 career assists. 1,000-Point Scorers 1. Abbie Willenborg , K. Christianson ,002 Heidi Bowman 1997-pres. 945 Three-point FGs made 1. 3 Oliver is 10th on the list with 261. Johnson needs 32 dishes to pass Oliver. Also within reach is ninth place. Debbie Stampley currently occupies ninth place with 268. At this point, Johnson is projected to have 64 assists on the year. Bowman the Showman Senior forward Heidi Bowman is making the most of her final collegiate year. Now 14 games into the season, Bowman has led the Golden Eagles in scoring in every game that Marquette has played this year. She has yet to fail in scoring double figures, with her season low of 11 coming twice. On two occasions this year, Bowman has set personal collegiate bests in scoring, racking up 26 points against Michigan and that same total against Colorado State. Seeking the Century Mark in Wins Head coach Terri Mitchell claimed her 91st career victory in a win over Memphis. Mitchell, in her fifth season as a head coach, needs just nine more wins to reach the 100 mark. Only one coach in MU history has won as many games. Tat Shiely won 111 games in 11 seasons with Marquette. With four more wins, Mitchell will become the second winningest coach in MU history. Jim Jabir is second with 94 wins in six seasons. Tales of Two Halves A season long trend with Marquette has been having one very good shooting half and one not so good shooting half. The Golden Eagles are shooting 37.6 percent, but have struggled to put 40 solid minutes of shooting together, even in the convincing win over Michigan. So far this season, Marquette has, with two exceptions, put together games in which it shot 40 percent or better in one half and less than 40 percent in another. In its better half, Marquette is shooting 47.4 percent ( ), and in the other halves, the Golden Eagles are shooting 30.0 percent ( ). Att.: 3,433 IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Iowa women's basketball team defeated Marquette in both team's season opener, 70-57, Friday night in Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. It was a very balanced attack for the both teams. Marquette's Heidi Bowman led the Golden Eagles with 11 points. Four other players scored seven or more points. Freshman Kelly Schwerman added eight points off the bench. Freshman Kristin Cuff and Crystal Weaver also added seven points off the bench. Junior center Sarah Zawodny scored seven points as well. Iowa had six players scoring eight or more points. Lindsey Meder led the way with 18 points. Randi Peterson netted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Cara Consuegra had 12 points and three assists. It was a tale of two halves for the Hawkeyes, as it looked like Marquette may have an easy night during the first frame. The Golden Eagles led almost the whole way, getting up as much as 13 points in the opening half. Iowa made a 7-0 run near the end of the frame to close the gap to I m sure that was importat for them, head coach Terri Mitchell said. I was preaching to our young team at halftime how we had to play hard for 40 minutes. In the second half, Iowa came to life behind the hot shooting of Meder. Three free throws from Consuegra at the 7:15 mark gave Iowa the lead and they never looked back. Their guards got hot, Mitchell added. Then we lost our effort. Marquette wouldn't go away, but the Hawkeyes answered every time down the court and hit their free throws in the final minutes to take the 13 point win. Game 2 Nov. 21, 2000 Marquette 59, Wis.-Milwaukee 43 Milwaukee, Wis. MILWAUKEE - A tradition was continued on Nov. 21 at the U.S. Cellular Arena as two cross town rivals, Marquette and UW- Milwaukee met for the 33rd time in their school's history. Marquette outscored UWM 16-2 in the final8:26 seconds to secure a convincing victory and to secure the Golden Eagles home winning streak of 22 games. Marquette senior Heidi Bowman scored a game high 18 points, including 2 for 5 for threepointers. I was open a couple of times and my teammates found me, it was as simple as that, said Bowman. Heidi is obviously a senior and a leader said Marquette coach Terri Mitchell who earned her first victory ofthe season with the win. She really stepped it up tonight for us. I just told her to be a leader tonight. Kristi Johnson's jumper with 13:09 in the second half put the Golden Eagles up 39-38, the team never looked back from there. They scored 20 of the games final 25 points to win the game. Johnson, a senior, finished the game with seven points. Junior Sarah Zawodny came of off the bench and scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds in 17 minutes. "I think it is important to find who can spark us off of the bench and I tried to change the line up a little bit tonight and I think it helped, added Mitchell. Game 3 Nov. 24, 2000 Northern Iowa 69, Marquette 62 Moraga, Calif. MORAGA, Calif. - The Northern Iowa defense put the clamps on the Marquette shooting effort in the second half, holding the Golden Eagles to 28.6 percent shooting in the final stanza, to earn a win in the first round of the Walnut Creek Holiday Inn Saint Mary s Thanksgiving Classic. All I ask of my team is that we get better with each game. They know this is a work in progress, head coach Terri Mitchell said. No matter what the scoreboard said, we got better as a result of this game. A back-and-forth first half ended in favor of Northern Iowa (3-0) due to the hot shooting of Nikki Spettel who scored 10 points Surrounded by Ebony Williams, Rachel Klug and Heidi Bowman, UWM forward Janelle Jonason attempts to drive for a layup. The Marquette defense was stingy here as it was for the entire contest, holding UWM to 27 percent field goal shooting.

8 to pace the Panthers. Marquette senior guard Heidi Bowman outdueled Spettel with 11 of her game high 20 points in the first half. Northern Iowa was unable to pull away from Marquette (1-2) in the first half despite leading for all but the first 2:27. Northern Iowa watched its lead grow to nine at the most, but Marquette pulled the halftime deficit to just three by using pressure defense which created steals and subsequent points. Sophomore guard Rashida Gales proved the benefactor of Northern Iowa turnovers as she scored seven of her nine points in the first half. In the second half, the MU defense needed the same full-court pressure to force mistakes by Northern Iowa, but MU was unable to capitalize on the Northern Iowa turnovers. Late in the second half with Marquette down four, MU forced a pair of turnovers on the press, but gave the ball right back to UNI as it missed opportunities to close the gap. Our pressure gave us the ability to take control of the game at times, Mitchell said. When some shots didn t fall for us, it took something out of us. Freshman forward Kelly Schwerman was part of the tenacious defense that forced 15 Northern Iowa turnovers and she too capitalized on that down the stretch in the second half. Schwerman scored three points of her seven and grabbed a crucial offensive rebound off of a missed free throw that allowed the Golden Eagles to cut the UNI lead to six. I though Heidi played the kind of game we ve been asking her to play. She stepped up and scored when she needed to, Mitchell added. We also had some big plays out of Kelly Schwerman. She hit some big shots, and as a freshman, it shows she s growing as a player. However, the Northern Iowa advantage proved too much for Marquette as it could not completely erase a second half deficit that was as much as 11 points at one time. Game 4 Nov. 25, 2000 Marquette 58, Southern Utah 52 Moraga, Calif. MORAGA, Calif. - Marquette spotted Southern Utah 14 points in the first seven minutes of its consolation round game of the St. Mary s Thanksgiving Classic before coming back to win, Marquette (2-2) struggled from the outset of the contest, but used a strong second half with tenacious defense to come from as many as 19 down for the victory. It was a tale of two halves for MU who shot just 19 percent in the first frame before rebounding to shoot 50 percent in the second half. The Golden Eagles went on a 19-4 second half run to erase the first half run by Southern Utah (2-3). Freshman forward Crystal Weaver started the turnaround by scoring the first six points of the run. Weaver also ended the first-half drought by scoring Marquette s points. She finished the contest with 10 points. After the Thunderbirds scored the game s first 14 points, MU head coach Terri Mitchell changed her team s focus by shortening the contest to mini-games. We gave the team goals for each media timeout, Mitchell said. When we started hitting those goals, we started shutting down Southern Utah. (By trailing by 14) it showed that we weren t ready, Mitchell added. We had to correct our mistakes and get done what we needed to get done. Leading Marquette in scoring was Heidi Bowman, who has been the top MU scorer in all four games this season. Bowman scored 15. Marquette continued its trend of being effective on the glass as it out-rebounded Southern Utah and has now bettered its foe in rebounding all season. Game 5 Nov. 28, 2000 Marquette 65, Syracuse 59 Milwaukee, Wis. MILWAUKEE As expected, Marquette s defense proved a major factor in the Golden Eagles win over Syracuse. What might not have been expected to what level Marquette (3-2) shut down the 78-points per game offense of Syracuse (2-2). The Golden Eagles started off slow offensively, not scoring a two-point field goal for the first 9:26, but allowed the Orange very little offensively. Syracuse hit just six-of-25 shots in the first half for a 24 percent shooting clip. I certainly will take that kind of defensive effort if it means a victory, head coach Terri Mitchell said. Our defense is going to get better as the season goes. Syracuse senior forward Beth Record was a focus for Marquette on the defensive effort. While she did score a team-high 16 points, she fell short of her 25 points per game average. Record currently sits four points shy of 1,000 career points. Our goal tonight was to keep (Record) for getting her 1,000th point against us, Mitchell said. We knew she was a great scorer Rachel Klug powers up for two of seven points against Syracuse as MU extended its home winning streak to 23 with a win over the Orangewomen. and we made it a point to keep her under 20 points. Despite struggling early with just three points at the half, senior forward Heidi Bowman proved to be Marquette s most consistent scorer as she led the team for the fifth-consecutive time in scoring. Bowman hit 5-of-14 shots and had 17 points. In the fist half, I started slow. I spent some time sitting on the bench with a couple of fouls, Bowman said. (Assistant coach) Jon Cain told me to not be short on my shot and use my legs. I did that in the second half and started scoring. For the first time this season, three players scored in double figures with senior forward Ebony Williams scoring 11 off the bench and junior center Sarah Zawodny scoring 10. 9 done just that, Mitchell added. Heidi has been a support player in the past and know we re asking her to shoulder a lot of responsibility. The same can be said for Sarah Zawodny. Syracuse held its own defensively in the first half, but Marquette proved slightly better shooting 28 percent, hitting eight field goals, leading at the half. Both teams opened their offenses in the second half as MU hit 10-of-23 shots (44 percent) and Syracuse landed 12-of-26 shots (46 percent). The difference with Marquette s aggressiveness and drawing fouls, where it went to the line 17 times in the second half, hitting 12. For the game, MU had a advantage in free throws made and advantage in attempts. Game 6 Dec. 2, 2000 Oregon State 64, Marquette 50 Milwaukee, Wis. MILWAUKEE Marquette s 23 game home winning streak came to an end on the afternoon of Saturday, Dec. 2 as the Golden Eagles (3-3) dropped a contest to Oregon State (5-0) at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Both teams started off the game slowly, the teams combined for just eleven points after the first ten minutes of action. Marquette only made two of its first 10 shots and ended up shooting 28.6 percent in the first half. We are searching for a consistent inside game on offense, but they have to want the ball and the guards have to get them the ball, said head coach Terri Mitchell. Oregon State s offense began to click in the second half. They improved their shooting to 43 percent and never trailed. Junior guard Felicia Ragland, who ended up with 23 points, scored 18 in the second half. Ragland shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Nicole Funn contributed 16 points and eight rebounds for the visiting Beavers. They (Funn and Ragland) are tremendous athletes and wonderful basketball players and they showed what they can do, said senior Heidi Bowman. Bowman continued her consistent scoring effort this season by also contributing 11 points in the losing cause. Marquette junior Sarah Zawodny scored nine of her 11 points in the second half in an attempt to bring the Golden Eagles back. The Golden Eagles were down at the half and never came closer than 11 points in the second half. The Beavers led by as much as 19 points with two minutes left in the game. We still turned the ball over too much and that may be because of our youth, but as long as they (the freshman) continue to prove their worthiness in practice they will get the opportunities. We were a step behind in every way, said Mitchell. The Golden Eagles had 20 turnovers compared to 11 for Oregon State. The last time the Golden Eagles lost at home was on Jan 1, 1999, a loss to Cincinnati. Head Coach Terri Mitchell now has a home record of 46-6 at home. It has been a long time and thisis something that we are proud of but at the same time, the way we lost today is more disappointing. We were just a step behind today, added Mitchell. Game 7 Dec. 5, 2000 Dayton 62, Marquette 57 Dayton, Ohio DAYTON, Ohio - Dayton used a run midway through the second half to catch and pass Marquette, winning a The Flyers (4-3) outscored Marquette (3-4) in the second half en route to the victory, breaking a Marquette 10-game winning streak over Dayton. Dayton closed the once 11-point Marquette lead down the stretch. After a pair of free throws and a three pointer by Dayton guard Chrissy Donovan cut the game to two each time, UD guard Shannon McFadden tied the game with 4:57 left by hitting a pair of free throws. Dayton took the lead for the first time in the second half on free throws by forward Kristy Hineline, 55-53, at 4:08. Dayton extended the lead to five shortly thereafter by a three pointer by Donovan, who led all scorers with 17 points. The Golden Eagles closed the gap after the Donovan trey to three on a jumper by senior Heidi Bowman, her first points in the second half, with 2:15 remaining. But Marquette couldn't catch the Flyers who were able to increase the final margin back to five. Bowman led Marquette in scoring with 12. Junior guard Sarah Zawodny (Beavercreek, Ohio) had Marquette's first double-double of the season, with 10 points and 11 rebounds. "I definitely have no regrets about our effort or our intensity," head coach Terri Mitchell said. "I thought we played a hard fought game tonight." The effort showed as MU outrebounded Dayton, 45-31, with a season high 21 offensive rebounds. Marquette had pulled away early in the second half, leading by 11 after a rebound and put-back layup by freshman Becky Stieber. However, Dayton went on an 8-2 run to close the gap to three points, 46-43, finished by a layup and free throw by Dayton center Cyndi Stull. "In that 11 minute stretch in the second half where there were no fouls called and we lost our big lead, we showed signs of frustration," Mitchell said. "We need to grow and not let difficult times get to us. Those are the times we need to respond to the pressure." Marquette struggled in the second half shooting just 29 percent, hitting 10-of-34 shots in the second half. "Our defense is improving as the season goes along and it showed with our effort tonight," Dayton head coach Jaci Clark said. While seven different players hit baskets in the second half, only Bowman and Zawodny had more than one field goal in the second period. "We answered a lot of questions tonight about our rotation," Mitchell said. "We've said all along that this is a process, however we are starting to solidify our rotation. That should help us out offensively." Marquette's second half was in direct contrast to its first half, where it shot 44 percent. "We must have let up a bit in that stretch," Bowman said. "Our offense wasn't responding to their made baskets like we did in the first half. We were unable to respond to the momentum that they were gaining." The first half began with both teams starting slow, leading to several ties and lead changes in the first 17 minutes of the game. However, a 12-5 run by Marquette in the final 3:20 of the first half gave the Golden Eagles their largest lead of the game to that point, The 33 was Marquette's highest first half output of the season. Four points by Zawodny in the last three minutes combined with six free throws and a layup by Johnson with six seconds left in the period pushed Marquette to the eight-point advantage. Bowman scored the bulk of MU's points with 10 at the half, ensuring her seventh game of the season with double figures in scoring. 10 Game 8 Dec. 10, 2000 Marquette 57, Michigan 58 Milwaukee, Wis. MILWAUKEE The Marquette Golden Eagles ended a two game losing streak with a win over Michigan at the Bradley Center. The Golden Eagles ended the game on a 9-0 run and stand at 4-4 for the season. Marquette senior Heidi Bowman scored a career high 26 points, including 15 in the second half, to lead the Golden Eagles in scoring. "It doesn't matter how many points you score, just as long as you get the win. It (the points) doesn't count the defense and the rebounding and the passing that we all did too," Bowman said. With the game tied at 58 and less than two minutes remaining, freshman Crystal Weaver found Bowman who was wide open in the corner and rattled in a three pointer that bounced high off the rim before going in. "I guess it was a little bit of luck, someone looking above, it was lucky, I'll take it any day, it was a big shot," commented Bowman. "I was looking for the rebound, but I would rather have it go in instead of the rebound," said senior Sara Zawodny about Bowman's shot. Zawodny also scored a season high with 14 points and led the team with 9 rebounds. Following a Michigan turnover, Marquette came back down the floor and again, Bowman was open and hit a two pointer to put the Golden Eagles up five with 1:12 remaining. Marquette then iced the game by making all four of their free throws in the final minute of the game. "That is a great team we beat," said Marquette coach Terri Mitchell, "We needed this game badly to get back on track. We had some disappointing losses, but I know how well we have been practicing. This is certainly a game we will look back on." Michigan was led by freshman Jennifer Smith who scored 13 points for the Wolverines on a perfect six for six shooting from the field. "They defended really well of off penetration, we didn't get to the line as much as usual and that was because of their defense. It came down to them wanting it more than we did, they got after every loose ball and out rebounded us," said Michigan head coach Sue Guevara. Marquette had 44 rebounds in the game, including 20 offensive boards, compared to Michigan's 22 rebounds for the game. Sophomore LeeAnn Beis who had 10 rebounds led Michigan. Junior guard Kristi Johnson had a season high 10 points and dished six assists. Her three point basket at the halftime buzzer sent the Golden Eagles into the locker room with a spark, only down two points. Marquette was helped off of the bench by sophomore Rashida Gales who made some big plays and kept the Golden Eagles strong. Rashida was a huge spark off the bench today," added Bowman. "She gave us the best minutes she could and it helped." Game 9 Dec. 19, 2000 Brigham Young 58, Marquette 44 Provo, Utah PROVO, Utah Brigham Young held Marquette scoreless for the final 4:42 of the game and rained a series of three point baskets to defeat Marquette, 58-44, at the Marriott Center. BYU (7-3) outscored Marquette (4-5) in the second half to pull away for the 14-point win. Up four with 5:21, Brigham Young extended its lead not only with a three-pointer by Lisa Osguthorpe, but a four-point play by Erin Thorn. BYU1s lead was extended to 11 points in 22 seconds. After a Heidi Bowman layup, Osguthorpe launched another three to open up BYU1s largest lead of the game at that point, 56-44, with 3:47 to play to further hinder Marquette s comeback effort. Thorn, an 18.9 per game scorer was held to just five points at that time. She finished the game with nine. Julie Whetten led BYU with 10 points each, Osguthorpe added nine. Bowman led MU with 11 points. The Cougars opened up a seven point lead in the opening two minutes of the second half, but Marquette responded with a 7-0 run to tie the game on a Kristi Johnson layup. BYU regained the lead with the shooting off the bench of guard Kaly Gillette Shippen. Shippen scored five unanswered points to take a lead with just over eight minutes remaining in the game. Despite trailing by three points at the intermission, 28-25, Marquette shot 46 percent for the first half to BYU1s 39. The Golden Eagles kept the game close at the half by with its accuracy. Marquette turned the ball over 13 times in the first half. The Golden Eagles led early, 12-9, with 11:01 to play in the first. After the basket by sophomore forward Rachel Klug gave MU a three-point lead, the Cougars went on a 10-0 run, holding Marquette scoreless for almost six minutes. A layup by sophomore forward Kristin Seffern off a feed from junior center Sarah Zawodny broke the MU drought. The Cougars shot 38 percent in the first half but were the beneficiary of 11 offensive rebounds. The first half scoring was balanced for both squads. Whetten led all scorers at the half with seven. Three other BYU players had five points each. Senior guard Heidi Bowman led Marquette with six at the break. Three other Golden Eagle players had four points at the half. Game 10 Dec. 21, 2000 Notre Dame 75, Marquette 54 Milwaukee, Wis. MILWAUKEE he No. 3 Notre Dame women's basketball team showed why they are one of the best teams in the nation. The strong inside game led by senior Ruth Riley and smooth shooting were keys in a victory over Marquette. Notre Dame, now undefeated through ten games, got out to a fast start scoring the first nine points of the game. Riley scored all nine of the points and ended up with 18 points and led all players with 10 rebounds for the game. Marquette's offense again got off to a slow start failing to score until three minutes into the game after missing its first five shots. The Golden Eagles ended up shooting 31.7 percent for the game. Notre Dame's 19-2 run was stopped with 12:35 in the first half when Marquette freshman Kelly Schwerman completed a threepoint play. The Notre Dame offense was clicking throughout the entire game. With a shooting percentage of 47.5 and 14 assists for the Irish, Marquette couldn't find an answer. "The first five minutes were key," said Riley. "We wanted to match their aggressiveness, getting the ball in the paint was key too, we really opened up the outside for our shooters." The Golden Eagles, who now hold a 4-6 record, went on a run to close what was once a 17 point lead to 10 when senior Heidi Bowman scored on a lay in that forced the Irish to call time out. "I thought offensively we did a lot of good things, Ruth was able to get going early and that was a good start for us, Erika stepped up and had a good game for us as did Ruth," said Notre Dame head coach Muffett McGraw. 11 Sarah Zawodny and Niele Ivey battle for a rebound in Marquette s loss to No. 3 Notre Dame. Bowman, Marquette's leading scorer in the first half with 11, missed her first start of the season after catching an inadvertant elbow from teammate Katie O'Grady during pre game warm-ups. "I was frustrated when it happened, I was really looking forward to this game, but I got back in right away," said Bowman. Despite not starting, Bowman ended up scoring 13 points in the game and was the only Golden Eagle scorer in double figures. Senior Ebony Williams replaced Bowman making her third start of the season. "They are a great team, top five in the country, and we weren't hitting our shots. If you take away those first five minutes, we're in the ballgame," said Marquette coach Terri Mitchell. "I see glimpses in games and in practice of consistency. If we are consistent, we will win games," added Mitchell. Following Marquette's run, Notre Dame scored the next seven points of the game to go up and finished the half with a 15- point lead. Riley scored 16 first half points and grabbed seven rebound in the first half to lead the Irish. Marquette never came closer than 13 points in the second half as Notre Dame cruised to the victory. Notre Dame concluded a 15-0 run with a lay up by senior Niele Ivey to go up by 30 points with 7:36 remaining to put the Golden Eagles away. Ivey went 4-5 from the three-point line for the Irish and ended up with 18 points and 6 assists. The Irish shot 75 percent (6-8) from the three-point line for the night. Notre Dame junior Ericka Haney had a career night scoring 21 points, she shot a perfect 7-7 from the field in the first half and ended up for the game. Her previous career high was 18 against North Carolina in "I wasn't concentrating on my offense," said Haney. "One of my strengths is taking it to the basket and I did that tonight." "We were in her (Haney) face and she still scored, but then again is another reason they are number three in the country," said Mitchell. A bright spot for the Golden Eagles was their efforts on the offensive boards. Marquette grabbed 16 offensive rebounds and Notre Dame had nine. "Marquette did a good job on the offensive boards, they never game up," added McGraw. Marquette was also aided by the play off the bench. Sophomore Rashida Gales scored seven points and freshman Katie O'Grady added a career high six points. Game 11 Dec. 30, 2000 DePaul 70, Marquette 65 Chicago, Ill. CHICAGO Marquette center Sarah Zawodny set career highs in points and rebounds with 16 and 12 respectively. However a cold shooting final 10 minutes of the game in which the Golden Eagles (4-7, 0-1 C-USA) scored just one field goal and six points between the 10:12 and 16 second marks gave DePaul a Conference USA in the opener for both teams. "All conference openers are important when the slate's clean," DePaul head coach Doug Bruno said. "If you have any chance of a championship, you've got to take care of your home court and whomever wins the most road games usually wins the conference." Led by Jamie Lewis' 15 points and 14 points by Candis Blankson, DePaul (7-4, 1-0 C-USA) had four players in double figures in points. DePaul was, however, without leading scorer LeNae Williams, who averages 18.1 points per game. She suffered from a hernated disk and was a game-time scratch. "It was an important game overcoming adversity," Bruno added. "It always makes the game a bit more adventurous when you're leading scorer is out." Marquette forward Heidi Bowman led all scorers with 19 points after hitting a three-pointer with 16 seconds and a running jumper with four seconds. Bowman's jumpers ended MU's scoring difficulties, but came too little, too late. "DePaul was picked to do great things this year," Marquette head coach Terri Mitchell said. "We had some struggles late. I'm really concerned with the three or four times we came down the floor and were unable to get a good shot off." DePaul rallied midway through the second half. DePaul forward Brianna Fitzgerald hit a pair of jumpers and a 24-foot three pointer by Molly Watson cut the Marquette lead to with 8:12 to play. After a stagnant period for both squads DePaul earned its second lead of the game with 6:12 to play on a rebound and layup by Lewis. After DePaul had sliced the Marquette lead to two early in the second half at 42-40, a pair of three-point plays by Becky Stieber extended the Golden Eagles' lead to eight before the DePaul comeback was mounted. The Golden Eagles started off the contest has they have no other in the season. Marquette raced to a quick 6-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game and jumped to a 10 point lead at 17-7 on a Zawodny three-point play. Zawodny sparked the Golden Eagles attack in the first half with a 12-point, seven-rebound effort. After hitting 5-of-6 field goals and a pair of free throws on three-point plays, a pair of fouls forced Zawodny to sit the final five minutes of the first half. "I was proud of the way both post players played and were able to score, but it's obvious that (Zawodny's) growing up," Mitchell added. "She was playing behind Abbie (Willenborg) and Lisa (Oldenburg) for the past two years and she has learned how to become a scorer on her own." Prior to her four trouble, Zawodny helped Marquette to a lead. Bowman also landed in double figures in the first half with 10 points. Marquette was successful driving to the basket early and drew several fouls that resulted in free throws. MU hit 9-of-10 first half free throws. However the first half was not completely dominated by Marquette. After they reached a pair of 10-point leads, DePaul turned the offensive tables on MU, going on an 8-0 run.
