1 Women s Basketball Sun., Dec. 10 Michigan Bradley Center, Milwaukee, Wis. 4 p.m. Tue., Dec. 19 at Brigham Young Marriott Center, Provo Utah 8 p.m. (7 p.m. MST) Golden Eagles Seek End to Two-Game Slide Michigan, Bradley Center, $1 Ticket Promotion Slated for Sunday Afternoon Contest Amidst a two-game losing streak, Marquette has a change of scenery in hopes of ending its two-game slide and returning to.500 on the year. A trip across the street to the Bradley Center is what s in store for the Golden Eagles on Sunday as they host Michigan. Michigan and Marquette meet for the first time since This is the third ever meeting between the schools. All tickets for the game are being sold for $1. Scouting Michigan The 6-2 Michigan Wolverines are Marquette s next foe. Michigan defeated Syracuse, 82-65, New Hampshire, 81-49, and Western Michigan, 84-56, in recent action to improve to that mark. Five players scored in double figures in Michigan s win over Syracuse on Thursday night. Michigan (6-2) at Marquette (3-4) Dec p.m. Bradley Center (19,150) Radio: WISN 1130 AM, Milwaukee Internet: Commentators: Kent Sommerfeld, Kareeda Chones Like Marquette, Michigan is faced with a daunting schedule, with 13 of its opponents having played in the post season a year ago. The Wolverines come into the season with impressive credentials, as they received several votes for the top 25 before the year. A loss to Washington in the second game of the year and a fifth place finish in the eight-team Rainbow Wahine Classic have kept the Wolverines from the national rankings despite an upset of eighth-ranked Louisiana Tech in the season opener. Led by the tandem of junior forward Raina Goodlow and junior guard Elaine Ingram, the Wolverines are averaging 73.3 points per game and are only allowing Goodlow leads the squad with 13.4 points per game, while Ingram adds 12.9 points per outing. The Wolverines, however, are a young team. Three freshman are regulars in the starting lineup guard Anne Thorius, forward Stephanie Gandy and center Jennifer Smith. Thorius is dishing out 4.8 assists on the year and Smith is hitting 59 percent of her shots. Off the bench, sophomore center LeeAnn Bies is third on the team averaging 10.4 points per game and scored 14 in a non-starting role against Syracuse. The Cougars were able to down Southern Utah, Washington State and Gonzaga before Arkansas (who defeated Michigan at the Rainbow Wahine Classic) ended their chance at a perfect road trip. The 5-2 BYU women s basketball squad begins a four-game home stand, of which Marquette is the final team to come to the Marriott Center. Northern Iowa, Montana and Weber State take on BYU before Marquette gets its turn on Dec. 19. The Cougars defeated Northern Iowa, in overtime on Thursday to open the stand. After dropping its first contest of the year in a decision at Arizona, BYU has won five of its last six, including the successful road trip. The biggest reason for the success of the Cougars this year is sophomore guard Erin Thorn. A 13.2 points per game scorer a year ago, Thorn s production has increased dramatically to 21.0 points per game going into the Northern Iowa contest. Thorn scored 20 in the win over Northern Iowa. A 42 percent shooter on the year, Thorn is just one of many accurate shooters the Cougars have. As a whole BYU shoots 43 percent on the year and is even deadlier from three-point range, hitting 44 percent. Thorn is the Y s most active long-distance sharpshooter, hitting 26-of-67 (39 percent). Senior guard Kaly Gilette Shippen is the Cougars most deadly threat from downtown, hitting 71 percent of her long range bombs (10-of-14). BYU is coached by Trent Shippen. He is in his fourth year at BYU where he has amassed a record. In his seven seasons as a head coach, Shippen maintains a record. Home Win Streak Halted Oregon State and Cincinnati have something in common. They are amongst the select few who have defeated Marquette on its home floor. Oregon State ended MU s 23-game home winning streak with a decision on Dec. 2, With a 13-0 home record in and a 2-0 home record in prior to the OSU loss, Marquette had amassed a 23-game winning streak at home. Marquette suffered its last home loss before the Oregon State decision on Jan. 1, 1999, a defeat at the hands of Cincinnati. Heading into the season, Marquette has won 62 percent of all its home games in its 26 seasons. Marquette is all-time at home and is (.702) at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Marquette looks to return to its home winning ways against Michigan. The last time a Marquette had a losing streak at home was Feb. 6-8, 1998, continuing to Nov. 16, Marquette fell to Cincinnati, 68-64, and Louisville, 79-74, to end its home season and lost to Drake, 85-71, to open its home year. In Terri Mitchell s five seasons, Marquette is 46-6 (.885) at home. 1,000-Point Club Last season, three Marquette players Abbie Willenborg, Lisa Oldenburg and Kiesha Oliver ended their careers with over 1,000 points. This season, with a little work, senior Heidi Bowman could join the 1,000-point club. Just 15 players in Marquette history have scored at least 1,000 points while at MU. Needing 286 points this season, Bowman has 104 points for a total of 818 career points. Only one season in her career, however, has Bowman scored enough points in a season that would enable her to reach that feat. In , Bowman scored 331 points for the season (11.4 points per game). Last season, Bowman scored 258 points. However, Bowman is on pace to score 401 points this season, which would easily eclipse the 1,000-point mark for her. Johnson and Johnson in the Record Books Junior Kristi Johnson has her sights on moving up on the alltime Marquette lists for a pair of shooting records and one for assists. Currently, Johnson is fourth on the all-time three point field goals made list and has moved into fifth on the attempted list. Johnson has 99 career three point baskets and 299 career attempts. Next on the list of three pointers made is Courtney Romesiser with 152. Johnson would have to set a personal season best for three pointers in a season as she needs 53 to tie Romesiser. Johnson has moved into fifth in attempts with 299, passing 1,000-Point Scorers 1. Abbie Willenborg , K. Christianson ,002 Heidi Bowman 1997-pres. 818 Three-point FGs made 1. Beginning the season, Johnson has 209 career assists. Oliver is 10th on the list with 261. Johnson needs 55 dishes to pass Oliver. Also within reach is ninth place. Debbie Stampley currently occupies ninth place with 268. At this point, Johnson is projected to have 54 assists on the year. Tales of Two Halves A season long trend with Marquette has been having one very good shooting half and one not so good shooting half. The Golden Eagles are shooting 37.4 percent as a team and are outshooting their opponents (37.1), but have struggled to put 40 solid minutes of shooting together. So far this season, Marquette has, without exception, put together games in which it shot 40 percent or better in one half and less than 40 percent in another. In its 40-percent-or-better half, Marquette is shooting 45.5 percent (86-189), and in the other halves, the Golden Eagles are shooting 29.5 percent (56-190). For the Defense While the offense has been inconsistent through the early portion of the year, the one thing that has been consistent is the MU defense. The nation s 10th best defense and Conference USA s best defense a year ago, the Golden Eagle defense is still stingy, allowing its opponents to shoot just 37.1 percent on the year, the second best total in Conference USA. It s 59.9 points per game allowed is also the second best figure in C-USA. In compiling a 3-4 overall record, Marquette has outscored its opponents during the final five minutes of each game by just under a point, however it has struggled from the floor. MU s scoring is up in the closing moments thanks to 35 free throws. Marquette has scored 16 percent of its total points this season in the last five minutes. MU s shooting percentage drops 10 percent in the last minutes of the game. Saving Marquette is its defensive ability in that same five minutes. MU drops its opponents shooting percentage by two percentage points in the crunch time. On a positive note, MU is shooting better from the free throw line in the final five minutes of its games (.714) than it is over the course of the season (.701). Strength of Schedule The Marquette women s basketball team pursues a fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament with a schedule that includes 14 home contests, games with five NCAA tournament teams Notre Dame, Brigham Young, Michigan, UAB, and Tulane from a year ago, and the Conference USA Postseason tournament. Marquette faces the most difficult non conference schedule of any team in C-USA. We ve had an outstanding schedule in previous years, and this year is no different, head coach Terri Mitchell stated. First Impressions With the loss to Iowa, Marquette is all-time in season-opening contests. The Golden Eagles, had won their last three season openers, prior to the road loss to Iowa. Last season, Marquette knocked off Iowa in the beginner in Milwaukee. In games at home to open the season, Marquette is 8-7. When opening on the road, Marquette is 5-5. On neutral courts in openers, Marquette is 0-1. In its first road contest of the year, Marquette maintains a 6-20 record all-time. In its first home game of the season, MU has a record. Tournament Play The Golden Eagles took third place in the lone tournament played thus far in Marquette fell to Northern Iowa and defeated Southern Utah in the consolation game of the Saint Mary s Thanksgiving Classic. Scoring 20 against Northern Iowa and 15 against Southern Utah, Heidi Bowman was named to the all-tournament team, joining Jerkisha Dosty, Saint Mary s (Most Valuable Player); Jermisha Dosty, Saint Mary s; Nikki Spettel, Northern Iowa; and Sarah Mortenson, Southern Utah. Marquette holds an all-time record of in tournament action. The Golden Eagles have won five tournament titles in the history of the program, winning the fifth in last season s OSU Classic. Marquette Signs Two to Letters of Intent Katie Alsdurf and Lesley Juedes signed national letters of intent with Marquette. Alsdurf and Juedes will join the Marquette women s basketball team for the season. Alsdurf, a 6-foot guard from Forest Lake High School in Forest Lake, Minn., is a three-time all-state performer and is the backbone of her high school team. Playing for Jen Hesse at Forest Lake, Alsdurf has been named a Player-of-the-Year candidate in Minnesota, an Honorable Mention All-American in 1999 and 2000 by Street & Smith and an Honorable Mention All-American by USA Today. Alsdurf is also ranked 58th by the All Star Girls Report. An exceptional student, Alsdurf is the top student in her class of 558 and plays AAU for Brian Frye with the Burnsville Blaze. She chose Marquette over Notre Dame, Penn State and Georgia. Katie is one of the most competitive players I ve ever recruited, Marquette head coach Terri Mitchell said. She s a winner. She has a fire about her.

5 (Alsdurf) gives us more size on the perimeter and a greater scoring threat, Mitchell added. She s an immediate scoring threat and is very athletic. Juedes, a 6-foot-1 forward from Ripon High School in Ripon, Wis., is her school s fourth leading scorer all-time and should be Ripon s all-time scorer after her senior season. Playing for Sheri Quamme, Juedes scored 19.8 points per game (a Ripon single-season record), 10.6 rebounds per game, and 1.8 assists per game as a junior. A two year starter, Juedes has been Ripon s MVP for the last two years, was first-team All-Conference in that same time period, and was first-team All-Area and Conference Player of the Year as a junior. Juedes was also a first-team All-State selection in 2000 by Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook. Lesley s a great inside-outside player, Mitchell said. She had a breakthrough summer and has shown an ability to score inside. She s also a great passer and can set people up with her passing ability. An AAU-All American on the 16 and under team, Juedes led Wisconsin Viking Club Velocity to a fifth place finish in the AAU 16 and under national tournament. She s a great athlete, runs the floor really well, and gives Marquette another dimension, said Keith Noll, Director of the Wisconsin Viking Club AAU program. She can put the ball on the floor and go to the basket, which a lot of big girls can t do. Mitchell said she was pleased with her signing class. We needed to address size needs and getting more scoring on the perimeter, Mitchell said. I think we were able to meet our needs with Lesley and Katie. Marquette Picked Second in American Division by C-USA Coaches The two-time defending regular season Conference USA Champion Marquette women s basketball team is picked second in the American Division by the league s 12 coaches, the conference office announced. Marquette, who went 22-7 overall and 14-2 in Conference USA play, trails DePaul in the American Division. The Golden Eagles return two starters from that team senior Heidi Bowman and junior Kristi Johnson. Bowman averaged 8.9 points a year ago, while Johnson scored 7.6 points per game and added 3.0 assists per game. She also guided Marquette to its secondstraight Conference USA regular-season championship. Her squad finished the season in fine fashion, winning 13 of its last 15 regular season contests as it claimed the regular season C-USA championship and berth in the NCAA Mideast regional. Guiding her squad to a 14-2 conference record, Mitchell earned her second Conference USA Coach of the Year honor. Two seasons ago, Mitchell led her squad to a 21-8 overall mark and a 12-4 record in C-USA play. For her efforts, Mitchell was named as the Wisconsin Fifth Season at MU (.712) in C-USA Women s Basketball Coaches Association Women s Basketball Coach of the Year. Her squad was impressive, registering wins over nationally ranked Florida and Wisconsin. Mitchell took the version of the Golden Eagles to a 22-7 overall finish and a 13-3 record in Conference USA, second best in the league. Marquette earned the C-USA American Division title and went to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season. For her efforts she was honored as the Conference USA Coach of the Year. In only her first year at the helm of the Golden Eagles in 1996, Mitchell guided the largest turnaround in school history. Marquette s mark was 13 more wins than the previous season s record of The previous record for turnaround in a season was nine wins. In fact, Marquette had the third-largest turnaround in NCAA Division I in Mitchell had the largest turnaround of any first-year head coach in Division I that season. Marquette also tied for the Blue Division title in Conference USA. Along the way Mitchell shattered the record for most wins by a Marquette first-year head coach with 21, nine more than Tat Shiely s 12 victories in She holds the distinction of having 50 wins faster than any coach in Marquette history. In addition she became the only coach in school history to take her first team to the NCAA Tournament. Not only did she take the Golden Eagles to the Big Dance, but they also recorded the first NCAA Tournament victory in school history. Mitchell s teams are characterized by hard-nosed defense and all-out hustle. Last season, Marquette held its opponents to a 36.4 field goal percent shooting clip, the 10th best total in the nation and the best in Conference USA. Terri has been an instrumental part of the growth and success of Marquette women's basketball as an assistant for five years and now in her three years as head coach, Marquette Director of Athletics Bill Cords said. She has leadership qualities, coaching skills, great knowledge of and love for the game and a tremendous work ethic combined with a deep sense of care for her students, our program, the University and of the community. Mitchell had been an assistant for the Golden Eagles since July of She was instrumental in signing Marquette s freshman class which was ranked 12th in the nation by the Blue Star Index. Marquette posted an record and made three postseason appearances during Mitchell s tenure as an assistant. As an assistant at Marquette, Mitchell was the recruiting coordinator, in addition to scouting, on-thecourt coaching, practice scheduling, season scheduling, office administration and working with the guards. She also was responsible for the organization and promotion of the Marquette girls basketball summer camp. She coordinated Marquette's community outreach programs for the basketball program. A native of Harrisburg, Pa., Mitchell served as the director of camps and promotions for Future Stars International for one year ( ), where she conducted basketball clinics throughout the eastern United States. 7 Game Recaps Game 1 Nov. 17, 2000 Iowa 70, Marquette 57 Iowa City, Iowa IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Iowa women's basketball team defeated Marquette in both team's season opener, 70-57, Friday night in Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. It was a very balanced attack for the both teams. Marquette's Heidi Bowman led the Golden Eagles with 11 points. Four other players scored seven or more points. Freshman Kelly Schwerman added eight points off the bench. Freshman Kristin Cuff and Crystal Weaver also added seven points off the bench. Junior center Sarah Zawodny scored seven points as well. Iowa had six players scoring eight or more points. Lindsey Meder led the way with 18 points. Randi Peterson netted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Cara Consuegra had 12 points and three assists. It was a tale of two halves for the Hawkeyes, as it looked like Marquette may have an easy night during the first frame. The Golden Eagles led almost the whole way, getting up as much as 13 points in the opening half. Iowa made a 7-0 run near the end of the frame to close the gap to I m sure that was importat for them, head coach Terri Mitchell said. I was preaching to our young team at halftime how we had to play hard for 40 minutes. In the second half, Iowa came to life behind the hot shooting of Meder. Three free throws from Consuegra at the 7:15 mark gave Iowa the lead and they never looked back. Their guards got hot, Mitchell added. Then we lost our effort. Marquette wouldn't go away, but the Hawkeyes answered every time down the court and hit their free throws in the final minutes to take the 13 point win. Game 2 Nov. 21, 2000 Marquette 59, Wis.-Milwaukee 43 Milwaukee, Wis. MILWAUKEE - A tradition was continued on Nov. 21 at the U.S. Cellular Arena as two cross town rivals, Marquette and UW-Milwaukee met for the 33rd time in their school's history. Marquette outscored UWM 16-2 in the final8:26 seconds to secure a convincing victory and to secure the Golden Eagles home winning streak of 22 games. Marquette senior Heidi Bowman scored a game high 18 points, including 2 for 5 for threepointers. I was open a couple of times and my teammates found me, it was as simple as that, said Bowman. Heidi is obviously a senior and a leader said Marquette coach Terri Mitchell who earned her first victory ofthe season with the win. She really stepped it up tonight for us. I just told her to be a leader tonight. Down by a score of at the half, Marquette turned up the defense and held UWM to 20 percent shooting and only seven field goals. We are finding that the defense can never let down. That is an improvement from last game. We never panicked throughout the game, said Mitchell. Marquette tied the game at 31 with Kristin Seffern's jumper two minutes into the half. Kristi Johnson's jumper with 13:09 in the second half put the Golden Eagles up 39-38, the team never looked back from there. They scored 20 of the games final 25 points to win the game. Johnson, a senior, finished the game with seven points. Junior Sarah Zawodny came of off the bench and scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds in 17 minutes. "I think it is important to find who can spark us off of the bench and I tried to change the line up a little bit tonight and I think it helped, added Mitchell. Game 3 Nov. 24, 2000 Northern Iowa 69, Marquette 62 Moraga, Calif. MORAGA, Calif. - The Northern Iowa defense put the clamps on the Marquette shooting effort in the second half, holding the Golden Eagles to 28.6 percent shooting in the final stanza, to earn a win in the first round of the Walnut Creek Holiday Inn Saint Mary s Thanksgiving Classic. All I ask of my team is that we get better with each game. They know this is a work in progress, head coach Terri Mitchell said. No matter what the scoreboard said, we got better as a result of this game. A back-and-forth first half ended in favor of Northern Iowa (3-0) due to the hot shooting of Nikki Spettel who scored 10 points to pace the Panthers. Marquette senior guard Heidi Bowman out-dueled Spettel with 11 of her game high 20 points in the first half. Northern Iowa was unable to pull away from Marquette (1-2) in the first half despite leading for all but the first 2:27. Northern Iowa watched its lead grow to nine at the most, but Marquette pulled the halftime deficit to just three by using pressure defense which created steals and subsequent points. Sophomore guard Rashida Gales proved the benefactor of Northern Iowa turnovers as she scored seven of her nine points in the first half. In the second half, the MU defense needed the same full-court pressure to force mistakes by Northern Iowa, but MU was unable to capitalize on the Northern Iowa turnovers. Late in the second half with Marquette down four, MU forced a pair of turnovers on the press, but gave Iowa 70, Marquette 57 Marquette Min FG 3FG FT Reb A PF Pts Williams f Seffern f Zawodny c Johnson g Bowman g Gales Cuff Klug Stieber Schwerman Bogott Weaver Totals Iowa Min FG 3FG FT Reb A PF Pts Manger f Lillis f Peterson c Meder g Consuegra g O Brien Berdo Bullock McCann Totals MARQUETTE Percentages: FG.390, 3FG.250, FT.438 Team Rebounds: 4. 8 the ball right back to UNI as it missed opportunities to close the gap. Our pressure gave us the ability to take control of the game at times, Mitchell said. When some shots didn t fall for us, it took something out of us. Freshman forward Kelly Schwerman was part of the tenacious defense that forced 15 Northern Iowa turnovers and she too capitalized on that down the stretch in the second half. Schwerman scored three points of her seven and grabbed a crucial offensive rebound off of a missed free throw that allowed the Golden Eagles to cut the UNI lead to six. I though Heidi played the kind of game we ve been asking her to play. She stepped up and scored when she needed to, Mitchell added. We also had some big plays out of Kelly Schwerman. She hit some big shots, and as a freshman, it shows she s growing as a player. However, the Northern Iowa advantage proved too much for Marquette as it could not completely erase a second half deficit that was as much as 11 points at one time. Game 4 Nov. 25, 2000 Marquette 58, Southern Utah 52 Moraga, Calif. MORAGA, Calif. - Marquette spotted Southern Utah 14 points in the first seven minutes of its consolation round game of the St. Mary s Thanksgiving Classic before coming back to win, Marquette (2-2) struggled from the outset of the contest, but used a strong second half with tenacious defense to come from as many as 19 down for the victory. It was a tale of two halves for MU who shot just 19 percent in the first frame before rebounding to shoot 50 percent in the second half. The Golden Eagles went on a 19-4 second half run to erase the first half run by Southern Utah (2-3). Freshman forward Crystal Weaver started the turnaround by scoring the first six points of the run. Weaver also ended the firsthalf drought by scoring Marquette s points. She finished the contest with 10 points. After the Thunderbirds scored the game s first 14 points, MU head coach Terri Mitchell changed her team s focus by shortening the contest to mini-games. We gave the team goals for each media timeout, Mitchell said. When we started hitting those goals, we started shutting down Southern Utah. (By trailing by 14) it showed that we weren t ready, Mitchell added. We had to correct our mistakes and get done what we needed to get done. Leading Marquette in scoring was Heidi Bowman, who has been the top MU scorer in all four games this season. Bowman scored 15. Marquette continued its trend of being effective on the glass as it out-rebounded Southern Utah and has now bettered its foe in rebounding all season. Game 5 Nov. 28, 2000 Marquette 65, Syracuse 59 Milwaukee, Wis. MILWAUKEE As expected, Marquette s defense proved a major factor in the Golden Eagles win over Syracuse. What might not have been expected to what level Marquette (3-2) shut down the 78-points per game offense of Syracuse (2-2). The Golden Eagles started off slow offensively, not scoring a two-point field goal for the first 9:26, but allowed the Orange very little offensively. Syracuse hit just six-of-25 shots in the first half for a 24 percent shooting clip. I certainly will take that kind of defensive effort if it means a victory, head coach Terri Mitchell said. Our defense is going to get better as the season goes. Syracuse senior forward Beth Record was a focus for Marquette on the defensive effort. While she did score a team-high 16 points, she fell short of her 25 points per game average. Record currently sits four points shy of 1,000 career points. Our goal tonight was to keep (Record) for getting her 1,000th point against us, Mitchell said. We knew she was a great scorer and we made it a point to keep her under 20 points. Despite struggling early with just three points at the half, senior forward Heidi Bowman proved to be Marquette s most consistent scorer as she led the team for the fifth-consecutive time in scoring. Bowman hit 5-of-14 shots and had 17 points. In the fist half, I started slow. I spent some time sitting on the bench with a couple of fouls, Bowman said. (Assistant coach) Jon Cain told me to not be short on my shot and use my legs. I did that in the second half and started scoring. For the first time this season, three players scored in double figures with senior forward Ebony Williams scoring 11 off the bench and junior center Sarah Zawodny scoring 10. We re asking some of our players to step up and they have done just that, Mitchell added. Heidi has been a support player in the past and know we re asking her to shoulder a lot of responsibility. The same can be said for Sarah Zawodny. Syracuse held its own defensively in the first half, but Marquette proved slightly better shooting 28 percent, hitting eight field goals, leading at the half. Both teams opened their offenses in the second half as MU hit 10-of-23 shots (44 percent) and Syracuse landed 12-of-26 shots (46 percent). The difference with Marquette s aggressiveness and drawing fouls, where it went to the line 17 times in the second half, hitting 12. For the game, MU had a advantage in free throws made and advantage in attempts. 9 Game 6 Dec. 2, 2000 Oregon State 64, Marquette 50 Milwaukee, Wis. MILWAUKEE Marquette s 23 game home winning streak came to an end on the afternoon of Saturday, Dec. 2 as the Golden Eagles (3-3) dropped a contest to Oregon State (5-0) at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Both teams started off the game slowly, the teams combined for just eleven points after the first ten minutes of action. Marquette only made two of its first 10 shots and ended up shooting 28.6 percent in the first half. We are searching for a consistent inside game on offense, but they have to want the ball and the guards have to get them the ball, said head coach Terri Mitchell. Oregon State s offense began to click in the second half. They improved their shooting to 43 percent and never trailed. Junior guard Felicia Ragland, who ended up with 23 points, scored 18 in the second half. Ragland shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Nicole Funn contributed 16 points and eight rebounds for the visiting Beavers. They (Funn and Ragland) are tremendous athletes and wonderful basketball players and they showed what they can do, said senior Heidi Bowman. Bowman continued her consistent scoring effort this season by also contributing 11 points in the losing cause. Marquette junior Sarah Zawodny scored nine of her 11 points in the second half in an attempt to bring the Golden Eagles back. The Golden Eagles were down at the half and never came closer than 11 points in the second half. The Beavers led by as much as 19 points with two minutes left in the game. We still turned the ball over too much and that may be because of our youth, but as long as they (the freshman) continue to prove their worthiness in practice they will get the opportunities. We were a step behind in every way, said Mitchell. The Golden Eagles had 20 turnovers compared to 11 for Oregon State. The last time the Golden Eagles lost at home was on Jan 1, 1999, a loss to Cincinnati. Head Coach Terri Mitchell now has a home record of 46-6 at home. It has been a long time and thisis something that we are proud of but at the same time, the way we lost today is more disappointing. We were just a step behind today, added Mitchell. Game 7 Dec. 5, 2000 Dayton 62, Marquette 57 Dayton, Ohio DAYTON, Ohio - Dayton used a run midway through the second half to catch and pass Marquette, winning a The Flyers (4-3) outscored Marquette (3-4) in the second half en route to the victory, breaking a Marquette 10-game winning streak over Dayton. Dayton closed the once 11-point Marquette lead down the stretch. After a pair of free throws and a three pointer by Dayton guard Chrissy Donovan cut the game to two each time, UD guard Shannon McFadden tied the game with 4:57 left by hitting a pair of free throws. Dayton took the lead for the first time in the second half on free throws by forward Kristy Hineline, 55-53, at 4:08. Dayton extended the lead to five shortly thereafter by a three pointer by Donovan, who led all scorers with 17 points. The Golden Eagles closed the gap after the Donovan trey to three on a jumper by senior Heidi Bowman, her first points in the second half, with 2:15 remaining. But Marquette couldn't catch the Flyers who were able to increase the final margin back to five. Bowman led Marquette in scoring with 12. Junior guard Sarah Zawodny (Beavercreek, Ohio) had Marquette's first double-double of the season, with 10 points and 11 rebounds. "I definitely have no regrets about our effort or our intensity," head coach Terri Mitchell said. "I thought we played a hard fought game tonight." The effort showed as MU outrebounded Dayton, 45-31, with a season high 21 offensive rebounds. Marquette had pulled away early in the second half, leading by 11 after a rebound and put-back layup by freshman Becky Stieber. However, Dayton went on an 8-2 run to close the gap to three points, 46-43, finished by a layup and free throw by Dayton center Cyndi Stull. "In that 11 minute stretch in the second half where there were no fouls called and we lost our big lead, we showed signs of frustration," Mitchell said. "We need to grow and not let difficult times get to us. Those are the times we need to respond to the pressure." Marquette struggled in the second half shooting just 29 percent, hitting 10-of-34 shots in the second half. "Our defense is improving as the season goes along and it showed with our effort tonight," Dayton head coach Jaci Clark said. While seven different players hit baskets in the second half, only Bowman and Zawodny had more than one field goal in the second period. "We answered a lot of questions tonight about our rotation," Mitchell said. "We've said all along that this is a process, however we are starting to solidify our rotation. That should help us out offensively." Marquette's second half was in direct contrast to its first half, where it shot 44 percent. "We must have let up a bit in that stretch," Bowman said. "Our offense wasn't responding to their made baskets like we did in the first half. We were unable to respond to the momentum that they were gaining." The first half began with both teams starting slow, leading to several ties and lead changes in the first 17 minutes of the game. However, a 12-5 run by Marquette in the final 3:20 of the first half gave the Golden Eagles their largest lead of the game to that point, The 33 was Marquette's highest first half output of the season. Four points by Zawodny in the last three minutes combined with six free throws and a layup by Johnson with six seconds left in the period pushed Marquette to the eightpoint advantage. Bowman scored the bulk of MU's points with 10 at the half, ensuring her seventh game of the season with double figures in scoring.
