Previously, the 49ers won a pair of games during the season, the most recent coming against Auburn in a victory that followed one of the program s signature wins, an win at No. 9 Pittsburgh. The victory over the Trojans also marked the first time since the season that a Pac-12 school had visited the home floor of Long Beach State in the Walter Pyramid, when USC defeatead the 49ers. The last home victory for Long Beach State against a Pac-12 opponent before Thursday also came against the Trojans on December 16, Tyler Lamb had a huge debut for the 49ers, becoming eligible for Long Beach State Thursday after transferring from UCLA. Lamb scored 20 points, including 18 in the first half, to help pace the 49ers in their win over USC, while adding four rebounds and leading the team with three steals. The two-point guard lineup that the 49ers have utilized the last two games has paid off for the 49ers in terms of ball control. With both Mike Caffey and Branford Jones in the starting lineup, Long Beach State has had just 66 turnovers in six games, an average of just over 11 per game. The duo also combined for nine assists against USC on Thursday. Mike Caffey led the 49ers with 22 points to go with Lamb s 20, marking the second time that Long Beach State had a pair of players finish with 20 points in a game. Caffey and Dan Jennings each scored over 20 points in the LBSU double-overtime loss at Washington. With Long Beach State s win Dec. 19 against USC, Dan Monson moved into second-place in coaching wins at Long Beach State with 106, passing Seth Greenberg. THE PLAYERS Junior Mike Caffey received Preseason All-Big West honors, one of six players picked one season after earning First-Team All-Big West honors as a sophomore. Caffey leads the 49ers in scoring with 16.5 points per game, and has scored over 20 points four times on the year. Caffey is also leading the team with 47 assists, and is third in rebounding with 4.2 boards per game. Senior Dan Jennings continues to put up big numbers for the 49ers in his final season. Jennings ranks third in the Big West in rebounding with 8.3 rebounds per game, and is just outside the top 15 with 12.5 points per game. Three times Jennings has led the 49ers in scoring, and has topped the team in rebounding six times in After scoring 12 points against Loyola Marymount, junior A.J. Spencer has secured a spot in the starting lineup, scoring in double-figures in six of the last nine games. The junior college transfer scored a career high 14 points against VCU, and is third on the team with an 8.4 ppg average. Originally serving as a backup to Mike Caffey, Branford Jones forced his way into the starting lineup as an extra ball-handler against VCU, and responded with a breakout game, scoring 19 points in 37 minutes with just one turnover against VCU s havoc defense. The redshirt freshman is continuing to showcase much of the promise the guard showed before going down with an ankle injury in the first game of the year last season. Jones currently ranks fifth on the team in scoring, averaging 6.7 points per game and is second on the team with 27 assists. Junior college transfer David Samuels had his best game as a 49er at NC State, posting his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds. That was the fourth double-double on the year for LBSU, with Dan Jennings putting up three in the first 10 games for the 49ers. Samuels 6.1 rebounds per game rank 12th in the Big West, and is second on Long Beach State. The 49ers also bring in freshman Travis Hammonds, who will join Long Beach State after enrolling for the spring semester. Hammonds is a 6-6 guard who hails from Columbia, S.C., and has the potential to make his first appearance for the 49ers Saturday. Charles Lockett remains on a redshirt year, and senior forward Edgar Garibay is out for the year with an ACL tear. Nick Shepherd is the latest injury casualty, out with a wrist fracture, while freshman Anson Moye is still recovering from a broken foot. OF NOTE Long Beach State has won 26 consecutive home Big West games in an active streak running since the 49ers last defeat on February 17, 2010 against Pacific. The 49ers won at home, to close out the 2010 regular season, and have since stayed unbeaten at home over the last three years, during which the 49ers have won the regular season Big West title in each season. Long Beach State is scheduled to play at least 12 games on national television this season, and could play as many as 17 depending on TV choices. After starting off with a game on the Pac-12 network at Arizona, the 49ers will also play on TV at Kansas State, Washington, NC State, and Missouri. Additionally, all three games of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off will be televised. Long Beach State s Dec. 19 meeting with USC was carried live on Fox Sport Prime Ticket, as will two home games against Cal Poly and Hawaii. Additionally, four other Big West dates could feature the 49ers in Wild Card TV choices from the broadcast partners. Most recently, the 49ers were chosen for the first wild card date at UC Santa Barbara. The Big West announced the addition of an additional broadcast package with ESPN3, which will carry additional games during the conference season. For Long Beach State, that includes three additional games that were originally not televised (2/8-UCR; 2/13-UCSB; 3/8-UCR) as well as a guarantee of ESPN coverage for two Wild Card dates on March 1 (Cal State Fullerton) and March 6 (Cal State Northridge). THIS AND THAT Long Beach State will again face a grueling non-conference schedule. The 49ers faced No. 5 Arizona in their first road test on November 11, and continued to play two more Top 15 opponents in No. 14 Michigan and No. 10 VCU at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. The 49ers also faced a Big East opponent into the Walter Pyramid when Creighton arrived December 3. The 49ers have also played Kansas State twice, beat USC at home, traveled to Washington and NC State, and still have a game against No. 23 Missouri on the schedule in games against BCS conferences. Long Beach State s strength of schedule is also objectively among the highest - the 49ers currently rank as having the No. 7 SOS as ranked by kenpom.com. It is also ranked No. 10 by WarrenNolan. com. Unlucky is the only word for it -- the 49ers have lost all three games that the team has shot over 50% thus far in the season, contributing to the teams overall record, in a mark that is an outlier in performance.

3 ABOUT MONTANA STATE-BILLINGS Senior forward Jonathan Mesghna is the star of the Yellowjackets. An international player from Frankfurt, Germany, Mesghna is leading MSUB in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.1 points per game and 6.1 rebounds per contest. Mesghna is also a key distributor for the Yellowjackets, second on the squad with 20 assists on the year. Long Beach State opened up the season with a win against another Division II opponent, defeating Hawaii Pacific in the team s homecoming game. Mike Caffey poured in 27 points to lead the 49ers while Dan Jennings dominated inside with 10 points and 17 rebounds, a career high. Long Beach State has never lost a game against an opponent outside of Division I under Dan Monson. Including the team s season-opening win against the Sea Warriors, the 49ers are now 8-0 against non-di opponents in Monson s seven-plus seasons. In a quirk of scheduling, the result Saturday will count as a contest for Long Beach State, but will only register as an exhibition for Montana State-Billings. Following the game, the Yellowjackets record will remain at 5-4. UP NEXT Long Beach State returns to the road, traveling to Reno, Nevada to face Nevada on December 28. 4 Long Beach State 72, USC 71 Last Time Out LONG BEACH, Calif. There was plenty of intrigue, with Tyler Lamb earning his eligibility hours before tip-off, but the UCLA transfer came through for his new team in a victory over USC in front of a thrilled standing-room only crowd of 4,410 in the Walter Pyramid Thursday night. Mike Caffey led the 49ers with 22 points, including the game-winner as Long Beach State prevailed in the first game against a Pac-12 school at home in over 10 years. Lamb, who required all of his grades to be finalized before gaining eligibility, gave the 49ers a huge lift with his entry into the game. Long Beach State had already fought back from an early deficit to take an 11-8 lead on a Caffey layup, but after the first media timeout, Lamb entered for the first time for Long Beach State. That changed the outlook for both the team and the game, as Long Beach State (2-9) took advantage of opened up play for a huge first half. The 49ers took a lead on Lamb s first shot, a made 3-pointer, and then started to fly in transition. Finishing the half with a 14-0 advantage on the fast break over USC (7-4), Long Beach State took a lead after a second straight 3-pointer with 9:02 to play. Continuing to push, a breakaway dunk by Lamb kept the lead at 12 points at 32-20, and Long Beach State continued to take advantage of their chances, scoring 50 points in the first half to go into the break with a lead. Lamb led the way with 18 points in the half, while Caffey and Branford Jones combined for nine assists running the break. That was the start of a big day of taking care of the ball for the 49ers, who finished with 17 assists and just 10 turnovers on the day with nine steals. USC refused to go away in the second half, slowly chipping away at the 49er lead on improved shooting. Pe Shon Howard led the Trojans with 19 points, including five threes while playing over 39 minutes, and brought USC all the way back. Long Beach State still led by ten points with 10:20 to play, but a four minute drought pulled the Trojans within two at until Lamb again stretched the lead to four at Dan Jennings scored to put Long Beach up by six at 66-60, but the Trojans made one more run. With the 49ers leading on a Caffey jumper, USC answered with a bucket from Omar Oraby, who was fouled on the play and made the free throw to bring the game within one. A steal by the Trojans led to a breakaway basket that gave USC a lead with 1:11 to play. Long Beach State answered with a defensive stop, and coming out of a timeout, handed the ball to Caffey, who drove the lane fearlessly to give the 49ers a lead, and a rebound by Jones helped seal the win for Long Beach State on the USC end. The win was the first at home over a Pac-12 school since December 16, 1999, when the 49ers had again won against USC. It was the first game against a Pac-12 opponent at home since the season, again against the Trojans. 10 Dan Monson has rebuilt the Long Beach State basketball program in his six seasons with the 49ers. Monson has taken a program that won just six games in his first season at LBSU to three straight Big West Conference championships, two NIT appearances and an appearance in the 2012 NCAA Tournament in the last three seasons. The 49ers have won 66 games over the last three seasons, with two victories over nationally-ranked teams. Those 66 wins have come despite Monson s 49ers playing the nation s toughest ranked non-conference schedule each of the last four seasons. Monson s success in the past three seasons has been rewarded with three Big West Coach of the Year awards, as well as back-to-back NABC All-District Coach recognition from and The conference coaching award following the season marked the fourth time that Monson has been recognized as a league s top coach, previously winning the honor as the West Coast Conference Coach of the Year in 1998 following his first season at Gonzaga. DAN MONSON (Mun-son) School Record: (7th Year) Overall Record: (17th Year) Education University of Idaho Bachelor of Science-Mathematics University of Alabama-Birmingham Masters-Education Coaching Experience Long Beach State Head Coach Minnesota Head Coach Gonzaga Head Coach Gonzaga Associate Head Coach Gonzaga Assistant Coach Alabama-Birmingham Graduate Assistant Honors 1998 WCC Coach of the Year 2011 NABC All-District 9 Coach Big West Coach of the Year 2012 NABC All-District 9 Coach Big West Coach of the Year 2013 Big West Coach of the Year His work with the squad was particularly impressive, working with a squad that had lost four starters from the NCAA Tournament Team, and integrated four Division I transfers during the season, including three that were eligible during the spring semester. Senior James Ennis helped that transition, earning Big West Player of the Year honors while helping the 49ers post a 14-4 league record, earning a third-straight regular season title, the first time that LBSU had won three straight conference titles in nearly 40 years. Ennis was joined by guard Mike Caffey as a first-team All-Big West selection following the campaign. In six seasons at Long Beach State, Monson has seen five of his recruits earn first-team all-conference honors. Monson s work with developing Ennis in his two seasons at Long Beach State paid off as the forward became the first 49er picked in the NBA Draft since 1992, a second-round selection of the Atlanta Hawks before being traded to the Miami Heat. Ennis became the fourth player to play under Monson selected in the NBA Draft, joining Joel Przybilla, Rick Rickert and Kris Humpries from his time at Minnesota. The 49ers championship season in came on the heels of a four-year run based on a nucleus of solid recruiting in his first few years on campus. His first recruiting class featured Greg Plater, the second-leading all-time 3-point shooter at the school, while his second recruiting class of Larry Anderson, Eugene Phelps, T.J. Robinson and Casper Ware may go down in school history as the best recruiting class of all-time at Long Beach State. Anderson, Phelps, Robinson and Ware all rank among the all-time leaders in school history in at least two categories and all four have earned all-league honors at least twice. Three of the four own a school record. Ware is the school s all-time assist leader, Anderson has more steals than anybody in 49er history, and Robinson is not only the all-time leading rebounder at Long Beach State, but the leading rebounder in the history of the Big West Conference. Ware established himself as not only one of the top players in the conference, but one of the best players in the nation. Named a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, honoring the top point guard in Division I, as both a junior and a senior, Ware won Big West Conference Player of the Year awards and was named an honorable mention Associated Press All-American in 2011 and 2012, while also being named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) District IX Player of the Year as a senior. In , Ware became the first player in Big West history to be named both the league s player of the year and its defensive player of the year. His first-team all-league selection made him the third Monson recruit at LBSU to be named first-team all-league. Ware also was named first-team All-District 9 by the NABC and first-team All-District IX by the USBWA as both a junior and senior. Monson s team also picked up two wins over nationally-ranked teams in , handing No. 9 Pittsburgh an defeat on the road before knocking off No. 14 Xavier at the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu. The two wins over ranked teams marked the first time a LBSU team had beaten multiple top 25 teams since the season. Monson notched his 250th career win during that same season, on the same night LBSU clinched its second consecutive Big West Conference title, when the 49ers beat UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 22. Monson s success during the last two seasons came after his team nearly broke through in After finishing the season tied for third place in the Big West, the 49ers jelled in the Big West Tournament and advanced to the title game, just missing a berth in the NCAA Tournament after a five-point loss in the championship. During the season, Monson led LBSU through the toughest schedule in school history and in the process picked up his 200th career win at Cal State Northridge on Jan. 28, The 49ers faced five teams ranked in the top 25, including the eventual National Champions, Duke, and a Final Four team, West Virginia. Monson also led the 49ers to their first win ever over national-power UCLA and a win over eventual WAC champion Utah State. Long Beach State played eight teams that eventually advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Monson was tabbed as the 16th head coach in Long Beach State men s basketball history on April 7, He inherited a depleted roster but still managed to be competitive in his first season at LBSU. Monson has been a Division I head coach for 16 years, during which he has compiled a career record of (.560), with nine trips to postseason play, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 1999 with Gonzaga University.

11 Monson was the head coach at the University of Minnesota for seven-plus years, compiling a mark and reaching postseason play in five of his seven seasons. In he led the Gophers to a memorable year. He engineered the second-best Big Ten turnaround in the previous 20 seasons, finishing with a 10-6 conference mark after posting just three league wins the previous campaign. Minnesota reached the 20-win plateau for the first time since and Monson led the Golden Gophers to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since In the Gophers advanced to their fifth postseason appearance in six years. Senior guard Vincent Grier was named All-Big Ten and All-District for the second straight year. In Minnesota went and earned the program s first trip to the NIT semifinals in Madison Square Garden. Monson reached two personal coaching milestones in With a victory over Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals, he earned his 100th victory at Minnesota. When he defeated Purdue on February 26, 2005 he picked up his 150th career head-coaching victory. With 100 victories in his first six years at Minnesota, Monson ranks second all-time at the school behind Jim Dutcher ( ) in wins during his first six years as head coach. Monson stepped into the Minnesota job on the heels of NCAA sanctions against the school. Those NCAA violations during the mid-1990 s severely limited scholarships and put strict recruiting sanctions on the program since the summer of 1999, coinciding with Monson s arrival at Minnesota. The summer of 2005 was the first Monson and his staff could recruit on par with every other college basketball program and that season concluded with a trip to the NCAA Tournament, the programs first year off probation. Prior to accepting the Minnesota job on July 24, 1999, Monson was the head coach at Gonzaga for two years. In he led the Bulldogs to within a breath of the Final Four. Gonzaga, which went 28-7 on the year and won the West Coast Conference regular season and tournament championships, defeated such notable NCAA powers as Minnesota (75-63), Stanford (82-74) and Florida (73-72) before bowing out to eventual national-champion Connecticut (67-62) in the Elite Eight. His first year as head coach at Gonzaga resulted in a mark, as the Bulldogs advanced to the second round of the NIT. Monson had a sparkling (.754) record in his two seasons as the head coach of the Bulldogs. Monson spent 11 years helping build the Gonzaga program. He began at GU as an assistant coach in 1988 and spent six years laying the groundwork. In he was elevated to associate head coach under head coach Dan Fitzgerald. Three years later he took over full control of the Gonzaga program. He led Gonzaga to a West Coast Conference title in 1998 and was named the WCC Coach of the Year. The squad set a school-record with its 24 wins and Monson was also named the National Rookie Coach of the Year by Basketball Times. Monson was a key figure in the Bulldogs turnaround in the 1990 s. Gonzaga had a record of over 10 seasons and he was responsible for recruiting many of the key players in Gonzaga s NCAA Sweet 16 appearances from From the time Monson was named associate head coach in 1995, Gonzaga averaged 22 wins per season and reached postseason play every year but one. Prior to joining the Bulldogs staff, Monson spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach under Gene Bartow at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Monson played one year of football at Idaho, but turned his attention to coaching when a knee injury cut short his gridiron career. He coached the boys basketball team at Oregon City (Ore.) High School for one year prior to taking the UAB graduate assistant post. A 1985 graduate of the University of Idaho with a bachelor degree in mathematics, Monson earned his master s degree in education with a concentration on athletic administration from UAB in In addition to his 20-plus seasons coaching Division I basketball, as either a head or assistant coach, Monson has served on two coaching staffs for USA Basketball representing the United States in international competition. Monson gained valuable experience by coaching on the international level with USA Basketball. He was an assistant coach for Kelvin Sampson on the gold medal winning 20-and-Under World Championships for Young Men Qualifying Tournament squad in the summer of 2004 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He also assisted Oliver Purnell at the 1999 Men s World University Games in Mallorca, Spain where the U.S. won the gold medal. With Team USA, Monson had the opportunity to coach future NBA players Sean May, Brendan Haywood, Bracey Wright, Chris Paul, Michael Redd, Mark Madsen, Kenyon Martin and Charlie Villanueva. Monson grew up around basketball as his father, Don, was a well-respected collegiate coach. Don was the head coach at Idaho and Oregon and was an assistant coach under Jud Heathcote at Michigan State ( ) for two years. Monson and his wife Darci have four children, a son, MicGuire, a daughter, Mollie, a son, Maddox and a daughter, McKenna.
