Three of the teams hail from the BIG EAST Conference, a league that boasts six squads in the top 20 nationally, including top ranked Syracuse. In 95 years of competition, Marquette has begun the season 9 0 on a total of nine occasions. Most recently, the program began 9 0 in before falling to No. 15 Arizona. Marquette s best ever start came during the campaign when the team claimed wins in its first 27 outings en route to a NCAA Mideast Regional appearance. The Madison, Wis., native has responded in the team s last four games, contributing 6.8 rebounds per night to lead the squad during that span. He opened his recent run by matching a personal best with nine caroms in the win over Jacksonville and has collected at least seven boards in three of the last four games. Blue s focus on rebounding hasn t impacted the rest of his all around game. Since the Nov. 28 win over the Dolphins, he is chipping in 9.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.3 steals per contest. Gardner Steps Into Starting Role For The First Time With injuries to junior Chris Otule and sophomore Jamil Wilson, sophomore forward Davante Gardner was inserted into the starting lineup for the first time in his career in the win over Green Bay. The Suffolk, Va., native finished the night with 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals in 30 minutes of action (previous personal high was 18 minutes). He shot 6 of 11 from the field and amazingly six of his boards came at the offensive end. Gardner now owns one starting assignment in 42 appearances and owns career averages of 5.1 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. Otule Suffers ACL Injury; Anderson Out With Bad Shoulder Junior Center Chris Otule has suffered an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Otule injured the knee while tracking down a loose ball in the opening minutes of the team s Dec. 6 victory over Washington in the Jimmy V Classic. Otule and the Marquette medical staff will evaluate the best course of action in the coming days, which will determine the amount of time he will miss. Freshman forward Juan Anderson suffered an injury to his right shoulder during practice on Dec. 8 and is expected to miss 3 4 weeks. The Oakland, Calif., native had appeared in four games off the bench for MU and netted his first career basket at Wisconsin. Crowder s Trey Allows MU To Rally For Win Senior forward Jae Crowder s 3 pointer with less than seven seconds left in regulation allowed the Golden Eagles to escape with a victory over Washington Dec. 6 in the Jimmy V Classic. The Villa Rica, Ga., native who was held to just two points in the win at Wisconsin, netted 16 of his 18 points against the Huskies in the second half. He finished the night 8 of 15 from the field and the lone trey he made all game proved to be the game winner. Crowder s shot was his first contest deciding basket at Marquette, but he did have one against Midland Junior College while attending Howard College. Depth Providing Much-Needed Options For Coaching Staff Head coach Buzz Williams and his staff have assembled the deepest roster during his tenure and the fourth year head coach is utilizing all of his options. The contributions of each player on the roster became even more important following the injuries suffered by center Chris Otule and forward Juan Anderson. Of the nine active players currently on the roster, not including Otule and Anderson, all are averaging at least 11.0 minutes per game and six are chipping in at least 6.8 points per contest. Through the first nine games, Marquette s reserves are contributing 23.9 points and 16.8 rebounds per outing while shooting 47.2 percent from the floor and 72.1 percent from the charity stripe.

The focus has been evident early in , where once again the Golden Eagles have made more free throws (166) than their opponents have attempted (133). As a result, MU is outscoring opponents by an average of 10 points per game ( ) from the line. The victory over Ole Miss provided a perfect example. The Golden Eagles entered the title outing having reached the 90 point plateau in each of the first four games, marking the first occasion in program history MU had posted four consecutive games with over 90 points on the scoreboard. In its 95 year history, MU has posted three straight games of at least 90 points on several occasions, most recently to begin the campaign, the first season under head coach Buzz Williams.

Season Opener Provides Plethora Of Notes Marquette s season opening 54 point win over Mount. St. Mary s was significant for a number of reasons besides the final margin of victory. Several individual and team accomplishments of note were collected. The 54 point triumph over the Mountaineers is Marquette s largest margin of victory since MU s win (55 points) over Prairie View A&M on Dec. 6, Led by 14 points each by Jae Crowder and Chris Otule, six players scored in double figures for Marquette for the first time since last season s win over Green Bay (No. 17, 2010) at the Bradley Center. Each of the 10 players to see action for MU contributed at least one point and one rebound. The last time every player to see the court chipped in came Feb. 2, 2011 in a loss at Villanova. Marquette s 54 point margin of victory was the largest in a season opener since MU downed Milwaukee Teachers College (55 point margin) to begin the campaign. Marquette s 19 steals established a new single game team record at the Bradley Center, led by four steals apiece from Jae Crowder and Vander Blue. Marquette improves to (.842) in season openers with Friday s victory. MU has won 11 consecutive season openers and 12 of its last 13. Cadougan Doubles Up In Box Score Junior guard Junior Cadougan collected his second career double double in the season opener, finishing with 10 points and 10 assists in just 24 minutes as the team s starting point guard. Connecticut and Syracuse share the top spot with 209 points, followed by Louisville (201), Pittsburgh (188) and Cincinnati (169). In , Marquette was picked eighth in the preseason poll and ended up the regular season owning a share of ninth place overall (11th seed in league tourney), but did advance to the program s 14th Sweet 16 appearance in school history. Four Players Ink With Marquette For Season The Marquette University men s basketball coaching staff, which has collected numerous nationally ranked recruiting classes in recent years, announced another quality class Wednesday as the official signing period opened. 8 Page 8 Two words have served as the foundation for fourth-year head coach Buzz Williams program at Marquette University since he was officially hired on April 8, 2008 Character Revealed. Because of the values and work ethic contained within that philosophy, the Golden Eagles were able to add Sweet Sixteen in as another twoword extension to the squad s impressive list of accomplishments during his tenure. Williams has guided Marquette to three-straight NCAA Championship appearances (six overall), including the program s 14th participation in the regional semifinals last season. Continuing the University s proud tradition of success on the court, MU has remained a fixture in the national rankings, claimed wins over multiple nationally ranked teams and been extremely competitive in the BIG EAST Conference. The squad has also ramped up its community service efforts under Williams guidance and collected academic recognition since he assumed the reigns of the program prior to the campaign. Marquette claimed 22 victories in , including a road victory at eventual national champion Connecticut and a quarterfinal appearance in the league tourney, en route to being tabbed a No. 11 seed in the NCAA s. The Golden Eagles posted upset wins over No. 6 seed Xavier and No. 3 seed Syracuse to claim a spot in the round of 16, which marked the furthest the team had advanced since Senior forward Jimmy Butler garnered all-conference accolades for the second-straight year and junior guard Darius Johnson-Odom earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team. MU also concluded the year ranked nationally in the top-25 poll thanks to its NCAA run. The team's character was tested from start to finish in , beginning with low preseason expectations from national pundits and concluding with a heartbreaking postseason loss. No team in the nation played in more one-possession games than MU, but that didn't stop the squad from collecting the program's fifth-straight NCAA Championship appearance and 20-win season. Marquette finished overall, including an 11-7 mark in the BIG EAST Conference, which was good enough for fifth-place in the 16-team league. Lazar Hayward (Second Team All-BIG EAST) finished second all-time in scoring at MU and four of the program's top- 10 all-time scorers have graduated within the past three seasons. Junior forward Jimmy Butler was one of the most improved players in the country and as a result was tabbed honorable mention all-league. Williams directed MU to a overall record in , which included a school-record 12 BIG EAST victories. The Golden Eagles advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship and were ranked among the nation's top-25 teams the entire campaign. A pair of players, Jerel McNeal and Wesley Matthews, claimed all-league accolades and McNeal also earned All-America honors. Off the court, Williams and his staff assembled a consensus top-25 recruiting class in each of the first two years of his tenure, including a group rated as high as No. 1 in the country by HoopScoopOnline.com ( ). The program's community service efforts have also reached new heights under Williams, highlighted by "Buzz's Bunch." This group, founded by Williams, focuses on providing opportunities for special needs children to attend games and summer camps. The Golden Eagles have also continued and strengthened their long-standing relationships with the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin as well as the Special Olympics. In , Williams served as an assistant coach with the Golden Eagles in his first season at Marquette. MU concluded the year and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since His coaching career has included stints as an assistant, associate head and head coach. Williams arrived in Milwaukee after serving for one season as the head coach at the University of New Orleans. He guided the Privateers to a 14-win campaign in and his roster featured Bo McCalebb, the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year. UNO claimed fourth place in the Sun Belt's Western Division and advanced to the league tournament quarterfinals. The squad claimed as many victories on the road that season as it had in the previous three seasons combined. His recruiting class for the season was ranked in the top-50 nationally by HoopScoopOnline.com. Prior to UNO, Williams served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Texas A&M for two seasons ( / ) under head coach Billy Gillispie. Both of his recruiting classes with the Aggies were ranked among the best in the nation and featured some of the top-ranked talent at the prep level. The squad made its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 25 years in and the previous team posted the top turnaround in the nation, improving its win total in by 14 games compared to Williams spent four seasons ( / ) at Colorado State, serving as an assistant the first three seasons before being promoted to associate head coach in Two of his recruiting classes were ranked among the 40-best in the nation, including the 2003 group, which was tabbed No. 1 in the Mountain West Conference. Colorado State made its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 13 years during his tenure and he was named one of the top assistants in the country by HoopScoopOnline.com. Williams was previously an assistant at Northwestern State ( ), Texas A&M- Kingsville ( ) and Texas- Arlington ( ). Williams signed the highest-rated recruiting class in the history of the Southland Conference while at Northwestern State. The Demons advanced to their first ever NCAA tourney the following season and two of his recruited players were named all-conference, while one was tabbed Southland Conference Tournament MVP.
