3 MORE ON THE MATCHUP UVM ALL-TIME VS. CURRENT SEC The Catamounts will be serarching for their first ever victory over a current member of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Vermont posted a record a year ago while the Cats posted a 29-6 record - a +7.5 improvement rating, which was tied for the 27th-best improvement and the fifth-best rating among teams in the NCAA Tournament. MOST WINS IN NEW ENGLAND Vermont closed out with the most wins among New England schools. UVM s 29 wins were four more than Rhode Island and nine more than Providence. America East rival New Hampshire trailed with 20 victories. LAST TIME OUT N. 13, 2006: Sophomore Mike Trimboli led the Catamounts with 17 points, eight assists and six rebounds as UVM stunned 14th-ranked Boston College at Conte Forum. Senior Chris Holm picked up his third career doubledouble with 15 points and 10 rebounds as the Catamounts improved to 2-1 on the season. The win was Vermont s second ever over a ranked opponent and first over an Atlantic Coast Conference school. VERMONT VS. JOHN CALIPARI The Vermont men s basketball program is 0-2 against a John Calipari coached team. The first meeting was back on Feb. 5, 1990 when Calipari s UMass Minutemen held off the Cats for an win in Amherst. The following year, UMass clipped UVM in Burlington. SCOUTING KENTUCKY The Wildcats come into the weekend ranked No. 4 in the USA Today Preseason Coaches Poll and No. 5 in the AP Preseason Top-25 Poll. Last season, UK advanced to the Elite Eight and had three NBA lottery picks - De Aaron Fox (Sacremento Kings, fifth overall), Malik Monk (Charlotte Hornets, 11th overall), and Bam Adebayo (Miami Heat, 14th overall). Payton Henson tallied a team-high 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting. The redshirt senior finished the contest with a game-high seven rebounds and dished out four assists. The Cats had four players score an even dozen Anthony Lamb, Ra Kpedi Ben Shungu, and Stef Smith. Shungu had a solid night with six rebounds and five assists to compliment his 12 points. Drew Urquhart added 11 points and five boards for the Cats to round out the balanced scoring attack. Binghamton, 29 T6. UMass Lowell, Hartford, Maine, 7 AE PRESEASON HONORS Senior Trae Bell-Haynes and sophomore Anthony Lamb have been named to the America East Preseason All-Conference Team. Bell- Haynes and Lamb were joined by Albany s Joe Cremo and David Nichols, New Hampshire s Tanner Leissner, UMBC s Jairus Lyles, and UMass Lowell s Jahad Thomas on the leagues Preseason All-Conference Team. Boston University ( ) 16 gms RECORD-SETTING SEASON Vermont inked its spot in the record book for multiple reasons and garnered national attention last season: UVM clinched its sixth outright America East Regular Season and Championship crown, becoming the 15th America East team to accomplish the feat UVM completed the first-ever 16-0 America East undefeated season UVM set the program & America East record with 29 victories UVM owned the longest win streak in country - 21 games UVM and Princeton were the only undefeated conference teams in Division I. UVM posted its ninth straight 20+ win season John Becker recorded the most wins by an America East coach in his first six seasons UVM set the program s single-season record for most consecutive overall and league wins UVM received votes in the Associated Press (AP) Poll for five straight weeks. Trae Bell-Haynes became the third player since 2005 to be named America East Player of the Year and win both the league s regular season and tournament crowns. 5 CATS IN THE NEWS BILAS PRESEASON PICKS ESPN s Jay Bilas gave his preseason college basketball predictions for the upcoming season on Thursday. Bilas mentioned the Catamounts as a valued mid-major selection along with Harvard, Bucknell, Yale, Oakland, Middle Tennessee State, Charleston, and Florida Gulf Coast. Bilas also listed his top vastly underrated players as two UVM players made the list. Trae Bell-Haynes landed in the fifth spot list while teammate Anthony Lamb followed in sixth place. LOU HENSON AWARD WATCH LIST CollegeInsider.com named Trae Bell-Haynes and Anthony Lamb to the Lou Henson Award Preseason Watch List on Wednesday. The award honors the top Division I Mid-Major Player of the Year. PAYEN HEADED TO SPAIN On Wednesday, former UVM forward and America East Sixth Man of the Year, Darren Payen 17, signed with Spain s Baloncesto Benidorm. Last season, Payen was the second Catamount to receive the Sixth Man of the Year Award behind teammate Cam Ward in He was a key reserve for UVM by dropping 8.3 points and grabbing 2.7 boards per game against conference foes. Payen was the fourth-best shot blocker in the league with 17 swats. The 6-8 big man sank 76.7% (56-of-73) of his attempts from the floor and charted five double-figure games against America East teams. LUNARDI S BRACKETOLOGY ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi released the first issue of his mock 2018 March Madness picks. Lunardi tabbed Vermont as a No. 13 seed up against No. 4 seed Notre Dame in the Midwest Region. BLEACHER REPORT NCAA TOURNAMENT PROJECTIONS Bleacher Report filled out a projected bracket for the 2018 NCAA Tournament on Tuesday. Vermont was selected as a No. 12 seed and matched up against No. 5 seed Baylor in the Midwest Region. From the complete 68- team predictions, the Catamounts cracked the top-50 among BR s team rankings. INSIDE THE HALL InsideTheHall.com, a college basketball blog, predicted each seed of the 2018 NCAA Tournament. InsideTheHall pegged UVM as a No. 12 seed along with Bucknell, Middle Tennessee State, and Charleston. The Rochester, New York native was one of three America East players recognized, joining Albany s David Nichols (Third Team) and Joe Cremo (Honorable Mention). YAHOO SPORTS 68 PREDICTIONS Yahoo Sports Jeff Eisenburg made 68 fearless predictions for the new college basketball season. The columnist talked about the Catamounts with his No. 47 prediction: 47. Small-conference team that could win a game or two in the NCAA tournament: Vermont. The Catamounts return four starters and most of their key reserves from a 29-win team that went undefeated in league play last season and was within striking distance of Purdue until the closing minutes of their first-round NCAA Tournament game last March. ESPN S 351 D1 RANKINGS ESPN s John Gasaway ranked all 351 Division I college programs and put the Catamounts at No. 74, based on his %RPM rating - percentage of possession-minutes that a roster returns from last season. Vermont was picked fourth among New England programs - No. 29 Providence, No. 46 Rhode Island, and No. 64 UConn. CBS SPORTS 351 D1 RANKINGS CBS Sports Matt Norlander ranked all 351 college basketball programs last week. The Catmounts were picked at No. 80 and fifth among New England schools - No. 25 URI, No. 26 Providence, No. 39 UConn, and No. 73 Yale. 5

John Becker was one of the 10 coaches to make the list. Rothstein said about Becker: Becker has quietly led the Catamounts to an average of 23.2 victories during his time in Burlington. Lawrence North Kpedi joins Ernie Duncan, Everett Duncan, and Josh Speidel as fellow Catamounts from the Hoosier State. As a senior, the 6-9 big man averaged a double-double, and earned Second Team IndyStar Super Team honors. He also led Lawrence North to the sectional championship game. He was selected to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) All-State Supreme 15 Team and was invited to the North/South Indiana All-Star Classic. His father Andy was a center for the Illinois Fighting Illini from Illinois made the tournament during the season and Andy was named team MVP as year later as a senior SKYLER NASH Guard Chicago, Ill. Gould Academy Nash, the No. 2 rated player out of the state of Maine, attended high school at Riverside Brookfield in Brookfield, Illinois before continuing his career at Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine. At Riverside Brookfield, he collected First Team All- Conference honors as a senior. While at Gould, Nash was named to the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class AA Third Team after averaging 20 points, seven rebounds, and four assists last year. His grandfather Charles Holton played for the Harlem Globetrotters from BAILEY PATELLA Forward Lenox, Mass. Vermont Academy Patella, a two-time NEPSAC All-League selection, comes to Burlington from Vermont Academy. Patella helped the Wildcats to a NEPSAC Championship during his junior season and a preseason No. 1 ranking as the country s top prep team heading into his senior campaign. Before Vermont Academy, Patella was a 1,000-point scorer at Lenox High School before transferring prior to the start of the season. STEF SMITH Guard Ajax, Ontario Bill Crothers Secondary Smith hails from the same high school, Bill Crothers Secondary, as reigning America East Player of the Year Trae Bell-Haynes. Smith is the all-time leading scorer at Bill Crothers and was voted Athlete of the Year as a junior and senior. As a senior, he was named team captain and earned First Team All-Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association honors. In the classroom, Smith was valedictorian of his graduating class. Last summer, he competed for Team Canada in the FIBA U17 World Championships. He was one of 10 Canadian players invited to Mexico to take part in the NBA s Americas Team Camp last summer.
