Junior guard Corban Collins led the way with 15 points, and was 8-of-8 from the line. The Eagles outrebounded the Herd, 45-27, and held a advantage in points in the paint. The MSU bench outscored Marshall, MSU shot 53 percent to MU s 36 percent. The win was Morehead State s third straight against Marshall, and head coach Sean Woods now holds a 3-1 record against the Herd at MSU. EVERYBODY SCORES All 13 active players scored in the Eagles win over Marshall. With 7 minutes remaining and MSU up 63-46, not one player had scored in double figures. It marked the first time that 13 or more players have played and all scored since 12/29/14 at Central Arkansas, in a victory. LOOKING TO START 4-1 With a win versus Southern Miss, the Eagles will get off to a 4-1 start for the first time since That season they finished 20-14, and lost in the first round of the CBI to Illinois State. AGAINST SOUTHERN MISS Tonight s contest will be the 10th meeting between Morehead State and Southern Miss. The first contest took place during the season. Morehead State holds a 5-4 edge in the series. Southern Miss won the last matchup, 74-60, in Hattiesburg on 12/4/13. Senior guard Brent Arrington was the lone active player to participate in the game, going scoreless in 12 minutes of action. SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES Southern Miss enters tonight s contest with a 0-3 record, falling in their last contest to NAIA William Carey, In their first two games, they fell at Memphis, 67-49, and then to Jackson State at home, They are led by junior guard Khan Price, who is averaging 11.3 points and 4.7 rebounds. THE FLOOR GENERAL Junior guard Corban Collins leads MSU in scoring with 14.3 points per game. He led the team with 15 points in the win over Marshall, and finished 8-of-8 from the line. He tied a career high with 22 points in the win over NKU. He played all 40 minutes in the win, which marked the second-most minutes he has ever played and the only time in his career that he has played every minute. He played 43 minutes in the overtime loss at UT Martin on 1/10/15. In the loss at ISU, he missed the final 7 minutes of the game after fouling out. Against NKU, he knocked down a season-high 4 three-pointers. THE NEW GUYS Junior College transfers Xavier Moon and DeJuan Marrero rank second and third in scoring. Moon ranks second off the bench with 11.8 ppg and had a career-high 18 on Monday at ISU, knocking down his first seven shots. Marrero averages 9.0 points and a team-high 7.0 rebounds. He had 16 points and 8 rebounds in his first career start at ISU. Against Marshall, he finished with 10 points, 8 boards, and 4 steals. They outrebounded a bigger Marshall team, 45-27, and a bigger Illinois State team, They beat the Redbirds, 18-7, on the offensive glass. RETURNING STARTERS Morehead State returns two starters from last year s team, including senior Brent Arrington, a Preseason All-OVC selection who averaged 11.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.9 steals/game last season. Arrington was the only player to start all 34 games last year. The other returning starter is junior Corban Collins. WOODS ON RECORD PACE During head coach Sean Woods first three years at Morehead State, the Eagles won 52 games, which is the most for any coach in his first three seasons in MSU history. THE MAN IN CHARGE Sean Woods, who has been associated with six Division I men s basketball programs, is in his fourth season as the head coach at Morehead State. It is also his eighth season as a Division I head coach and 13th year of coaching at the collegiate level. Woods guided Morehead State to a overall record and 10-6 Ohio Valley Conference mark in OVC AND NCAA HISTORY Morehead State owns 13 Ohio Valley Conference championships, including nine regularseason crowns (last in 2003) and four tournament titles (last in 2011). The Eagles OVC opener at Murray State on Saturday, Jan. 2, and their home games against Eastern Kentucky on Thursday, Feb. 11 and Belmont on Saturday, Feb. 13 will all air on the CBS Sports Network. The American Sports Network will broadcast the contest on Saturday, Jan. 23 when Jacksonville State comes to Johnson Arena. COLLINS PLAYS WITH ATHLETES IN ACTION After transferring from LSU, Guard Corban Collins had a very successful first season with the Eagles in , starting 19 times and averaging 8.8 points-per-game. After the season, he was granted the opportunity to spend a portion of the summer in New Zealand with Athletes in Action, a Christian organization known for using sports as a platform to help people answer questions of faith. It was a great opportunity, I definitely feel blessed to have the opportunity to go to New Zealand, said Collins. We were able to speak to people and spread the gospel, but we were also able to play basketball. It is also his eighth season as a Division I head coach and 13th year of coaching at the collegiate level. Woods guided Morehead State to a overall record and 10-6 Ohio Valley Conference mark in The Eagles made their tenth straight OVC Tournament appearance and advanced to the semifinal before falling to Murray State. In his second season at the helm, Morehead State reached the 20-win plateau for just the sixth time in school history and postseason play for just the ninth time. The Eagles (L-R): Tilmon, Spradlin, Woods, Howard, Mattox, Percell also managed the league s best road record (9-7). Woods shattered a Morehead State record for victories by a second-year head coach in The previous standard was 16. He has also collected more wins (52) than any other bench boss during their first three seasons at MSU. Before taking the reigns at MSU, Woods led Mississippi Valley State to 50 overall wins and 44 Southwestern Athletic Conference victories from The Delta Devils finished overall, 17-1 in the SWAC, won the conference tournament and advanced to the school s fifth-ever NCAA Tournament. MVSU improved by 14 overall wins and 10 conference victories from his first season to his fourth. Woods was recognized as the SWAC Coach of the Year and earned the prestigious Ben Jobe Award, which honors the top minority coach in NCAA Division I men s college basketball. Prior to accepting the head position in Itta Bena, Miss., Woods spent time on the coaching staffs at TCU ( ), Texas A&M Corpus Christi ( ) and High Point ( ). All five of those teams recorded at least 13 wins. His squad at TAMUCC posted a 20-8 overall record. Woods played in 91 games at Kentucky from He was coached by Rick Pitino, Tubby Smith and Billy Donovan, who have all won national titles as head coaches. Woods, whose #11 jersey hangs in Rupp Arena, was later inducted into the UK Athletic Hall of Fame. Woods may be best known as one of the Unforgettables from Kentucky s 1992 East Regional final team. He scored 21 points against Duke in one of the NCAA Tournament s most memorable games en route to All-Tournament Team honors. Woods, an Indianapolis native, is a 1988 graduate of Cathedral High School. But, I m so proud of our guys, we stepped up and we were solid defensively. We didn t allow them to get a lot of threes. We didn t allow dribble penetration, we stayed home and we were disciplined, said head coach Sean Woods. The Eagles took a lead into the locker room, after big first halves from junior Ty Quan Bitting and senior Lyonell Gaines off the bench. The Eagles quickly extended that lead as junior De- Juan Marrero scored six straight points out of the locker room, adding a block on the defensive end. This was all part of an 8-0 run for the Eagles to start the second half. Morehead State finished the game shooting 53 percent from the field and holding Marshall to 36 percent accuracy. The Eagles connected on 18 of their 25 free throws and handed out 21 assists. Morehead State outrebounded the Herd, 45-27, led by Marrero s eight boards. He also added eight points. Every Eagle on the roster got in on the scoring by night s end. We got contributions out of everybody tonight, said Woods. I couldn t be more ecstatic from a team standpoint that everyone was able to contribute to a big-time win like this. Junior Corban Collins finished the game with a team-high 15 points to go along with his eight assists. He shot 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Gaines racked up nine points, junior guard Xavier Moon added nine as well, while Bitting finished with eight points, all in the first half. Sophomore guard Miguel Dicent also contributed seven points. The Eagles held advantages of in points in the paint and in points scored by reserves.
