KEY STORYLINES Xavier is looking for its eighth straight victory in regular season tournament action and is shooting to win a holiday tournament for the third straight season. Xavier, 5-0, is ranked 15th in the AP Poll and 14th in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Xavier has won at least its first five games for five straight seasons. Xavier senior guard Trevon Bluiett leads the BIG EAST in scoring at 23.4 ppg. Bluiett has scored at least 20 points in each of Xavier's first five games. Xavier leads the BIG EAST (second nationally) in field goal percentage at XU leads the BIG EAST (14th nationally) in field goal percentage defense at 34.1 percent. Xavier's senior duo of Trevon Bluiett and J.P. Macura has scored a combined 2,816 points in their XU careers, tied for first among duos nationally as of Nov. 24. Xavier's Trevon Bluiett is 11th on XU's all-time scoring list with 1,702 points and is just 17 points shy of the top 10 and Brian Grant (1,719 points from ). Xavier sophomore Tyrique Jones leads the team in rebounding (7.6 rpg.) following an career high-tying 11-rebound game vs. GW and is first in blocks (1.6 bpg.). Xavier sophomore Quentin Goodin, who tied his career scoring high with 16 points vs. GW yesterday, is second in the BIG EAST in assists at 5.6 apg. Xavier senior Sean O'Mara has averaged 10.5 ppg. over the past two games, while shooting 88.9 percent (8-of-9) from the field. Xavier, a 2017 NCAA Elite Eight team, has made it to at least the Sweet 16 six times in the last 10 years, one of only nine schools that can say that. XU is one of only eight schools have been to at least 11 of the last 12 NCAA tournaments. Xavier has graduated 105 straight men's basketball seniors dating back to the school year. 3 GAME NOTES THE XAVIER-ARIZONA STATE SERIES: Arizona State leads the series 2-1, although the two teams have not met since the season. In the last two meetings, ASU beat XU in the season ( ) in Tempe and XU defeated ASU in the season ( ) at Xavier's Cintas Center. FAMILIAR FACE ON ASU BENCH: Arizona State assistant coach Anthony Coleman was a Musketeer forward from before transferring to Long Beach State to finish his basketball and academic career. RECENT HISTORY VS. THE PAC-12: Xavier has won its last two games against Pac-12 competition. XU defeated 2017 Pac-12 Champion Arizona in a 2017 NCAA Tournament West Regional Semifinal, ( ). XU defeated Utah at Cintas Center during the regular season ( ). LOOKING FOR THREE STRAIGHT CHAMPIONSHIPS: Xavier won regular season tournament championships each of the last two seasons, including the 2015 Advocare Invitational with wins over Alabama, USC and Dayton, and the 2016 Tire Pros Invitational with wins over Missouri, Clemson and Northern Iowa. Both tournaments were played at the HP Fieldhouse in Orlando, Florida. Trevon Bluiett earned All-Tournament honors both years, including MVP of the 2016 Tire Pros Invitational. J.P. Macura joined Bluiett on the All-Tournament squad for the 2016 Tire Pros Invitational. FOR THE RECORD (ARIZONA STATE): Arizona State, 5-0, is coming off a win over Kansas State yesterday. FOR THE RECORD (XAVIER): Xavier, 5-0 and ranked No. 15 in the Associated Press Poll and 14th in the USA Today Coaches Poll this week, is coming off an win over George Washington on Thanksgiving Day in the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational. Xavier led by only six points, 62-56, with 8:51 left but used a 13-2 run to blow the game open at with 2:50 left. Senior Trevon Bluiett led all scorers with 20 points, his fifth straight 20-point game. Sophomore Tyrique Jones tied his rebounding career high with a game-high 11 boards. Sophomore Quentin Goodin contributed a career-high tying 16 points to go with four rebounds, four assists and four steals. XAVIER RECORDED A WIN AT WISCONSIN IN THE GAVITT TIPOFF GAMES: Xavier recorded an win at Wisconsin on Nov. 16 as part of the third annual Gavitt Tipoff Games. Xavier built a nine-point lead with under four minutes left in the first half but Wisconsin battled back to tie the score at 34-all at the half. The Badgers led with 2:44 left when senior All-America candidate Trevon Bluiett took over the game. Bluiett scored eight straight points, beginning with a pair of free throws to tie the score at 66-all followed by a pair of 3-pointers to give XU the lead for good at with 1:07 left. Bluiett scored a gamehigh 25 points to go with a game-high nine rebounds. His 21-point second half effort included 12 points in the final 2:25. His efforts earned him BIG EAST Player of the Week honors. Fellow senior J.P. Macura hit 10-of-15 from the field on his way to 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists. HITTING THE CENTURY MARK: Xavier scored 100+ points for the second straight game in defeating Rider on Nov. 13. XU defeated Morehead State on Nov. 10 to open the season. That's a first for Xavier since the season when XU defeated Bowling Green ( on ) and Sacred Heart ( on ) in back-to-back games. This marked just the third time in 22 seasons that Xavier has recorded back-to-back 100-point games. In the season XU defeated Kansas State ( on ) and Virginia ( on ) in back-to-back games. HOT SHOOTING IN THE OPENER: Xavier recorded a win over Morehead State in its regular season opener on Nov. 10. Xavier, which recorded its 28th straight season-opening win (27th straight win in a home season opener), scored 100 points for the first time since defeating Fairleigh Dickinson in the season opener ( ) and its 52-point win margin marked its largest since defeating Louisiana Monroe on Nov. 24, Xavier's 62 first-half points, which included 75.9 percent shooting from the field, marked XU's biggest halftime scoring total since that Fairleigh Dickinson game when XU scored 68 in the first half. GREAT START FOR BLUIETT... TWO STRAIGHT WEEKS OF BIG EAST HONORS: Senior guard Trevon Bluiett, First Team All-BIG EAST and All-BIG EAST Tournament two years in a row, was selected to the preseason All-BIG EAST First Team. Bluiett, who was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Nov. 20, scored eight straight points late in the Wisconsin win on Nov. 16, beginning with a pair of free throws to tie the score at 66-all followed by a pair of 3-pointers to give XU the lead for good at with 1:07 left. Bluiett finished the win at UW with a game-high 25 points to go with a game-high nine rebounds on the night; his 21-point second half effort included 12 points in the final 2:25. Bluiett scored a game-high 25 points on 9-of-12 shooting, including 5-of-7 3-point shooting, in the Morehead State win on his way to earning a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Nov. 13. LEADING THE WAY: Senior All-America candidate Trevon Bluiett is second in the BIG EAST in scoring at 23.4 ppg. on 58.7 percent shooting from the field, including 54.5 percent from 3-point range. Bluiett leads the BIG EAST in 3-point field goals per game at 3.6. He second on the team in rebounding at 6.8 rpg. He is fifth in the BIG EAST in free-throw shooting at 92.6 percent (25-of-27) VISION: Senior guard Trevon Bluiett has scored 20 or more points in each of the first five games. It's the first time in his career that he has posted five straight 20-point+ games. BLUIETT IS LOOKING TO JOIN AN IMPRES- SIVE BIG EAST LIST: Senior guard Trevon Bluiett, two-time First Team All-BIG EAST, is looking to become just the 13th player in BIG EAST history to make the BIG EAST First Team three times. 4 GAME NOTES BLUIETT EARNS NATIONAL ATTENTION AS ALL-AMERICA AND NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE YEAR CANDIDATE: Xavier senior guard Trevon Bluiett is on the preseason watch list for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, which is given to the USBWA's National Player of the Year. He is also on the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 list and the watch lists for the Citizen Naismith Trophy, the Julius Erving Award and the Lute Olson Award, which is CollegeInsider. com's National Player of the Year award. Bluiett has earned a long list of preseason All-America honors, including second team honors from Sporting News, NBC Sports and Athlon Sports and third team honors from ESPN, CBS Sports, Street & Smith's, Blue Ribbon Basketball and College Sports Madness. In addition to those national honors, he Bluiett earned the 12th-most votes for Associated Press preseason All- American. For the record, Xavier alumnus David West, who is now playing for the Golden State Warriors, earned Associated Press and USBWA National Player of the Year honors in West is Xavier's only national player of the year to date. MACURA ALSO OFF TO A GOOD START: Senior guard J.P. Macura is second on the team in scoring at 12.0 ppg. Macura, who is second on the team and 10th in the BIG EAST in assists at 3.8 apg., leads the team and is sixth in the BIG EAST in steals at 2.0 spg. Macura was named preseason BIG EAST Conference honorable mention. BLUIETT AND MACURA CONTINUE TO CLIMB XAVIER'S ALL-TIME SCORING LIST: Senior guard Trevon Bluiett has moved into 11th place on Xavier's all-time scoring list with 1,702 career points and is just 17 points shy of the top 10 and Brian Grant (1,719 points from ). THE NATION'S TOP SCORING DUO: Senior guards Trevon Bluiett and J.P. Macura, who were both named to the fivemember 2017 NCAA All-West Regional Team, have combined for 2,816 points in their careers so far. The duo ranks tied for first among the nation's top active scoring duos as of Nov. 24. The duo is also seventh among all-time XU combinations that have played four years together and stands just six points shy of the sixth-place duo, Stanley Burrell and Josh Duncan (2,822 points from ). JONES IS ESTABLISHING HIMSELF: Sophomore Tyrique Jones is off to a great start. Jones leads the team in rebounding at 7.6 rpg. following his career-high tying 11-rebound game vs. George Washington yesterday. Jones also leads the team in blocks at 1.6 bpg., is second in field goal percentage (.688) and is third on the team in scoring (11.6 ppg.). Jones scored a career-high 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field vs. Rider on Nov. 13. Jones has scored in double figures in three of the first five games. By comparison, he had only four double-figure scoring efforts in 37 games played as a freshman. GOODIN ENJOYS A CAREER DAY: Sophomore Quentin Goodin scored a careerhigh tying 16 points to go with four rebounds, four assists and four steals in the win over George Washington yesterday. Goodin is second in the BIG EAST in assists at 5.6 apg. GATES IS PICKING UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF LAST SEASON: Junior Kaiser Gates, who was a major contributor in Xavier's 2017 NCAA Tournament run, has started each of the first five games and has contributed double-figure scoring in three of those games. Gates, who is fourth on the team in scoring at 10.2 ppg., had only six double-figure scoring games as a sophomore. Gates is second on the team in 3-point shooting, hitting 13-of-31 for 41.9 percent. He is coming off a 12-point, seven-rebound game vs. Hampton on Nov. 20. TIME SHARE: All 10 of Xavier's scholarship players are averaging between 11 minutes and 31 minutes per game this season. XAVIER HAS BUILT AN IMPRESSIVE NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY: Xavier made the 2017 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight, defeating No. 6 seed and Big Ten runnerup Maryland 79-65, No. 3 seed and ACC runner-up Florida State and No. 2 seed and Pac-12 Champion Arizona to reach the West Regional Semifinal. Xavier has now made it to at least the Sweet 16 six times in the last 10 years, one of only nine schools that have been to at least six since 2008: Kansas (7), North Carolina (7), Michigan State (7), Wisconsin (7), Xavier (6), Louisville (6), Duke (6), Arizona (6) and Kentucky (6). Xavier played in its fourth straight NCAA Tournament and its 11th in the last 12 years; only eight schools have been to at least 11 of the last 12 tournaments: Duke, Kansas, Gonzaga, Michigan State and Wisconsin are at 12, while Xavier, North Carolina and Villanova are at 11. BASKETBALL TIMES HONORS XAVIER PROGRAM AGAIN IN 2017: The Xavier men's basketball program is tied with Florida for 15th in the new Basketball Times rankings of the best NCAA men's basketball programs. Every five years since 1997, Basketball Times has evaluated the best of the best NCAA programs with rankings that are based on five categories: winning percentage, NBA players, federal graduation rate, U.S. News and World Report academic reputation and program cleanliness. Xavier was ranked 21st in the last rankings back in XAVIER SIGNED THREE: Head coach Chris Mack signed three high school standouts during the fall signing period: 7-0, 260-pound center Jake Walter from Covington (Ky.) Catholic High School, 6-4, 175-pound guard Keonte Kennedy from Westlake High School in Austin, Texas and 6-8, 220 pound forward Dontarius James from Huntington (W. Va.) Prep. Keonte Kennedy, an ESPN.com four-star recruit and the No. 25 ranked shooting guard in the nation, averaged 14.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game as a junior, leading all of District 25 in made 3-point field goals. Jake Walter, a three-star recruit on Scout.com, averaged 6.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game as a junior. Walter is the son of long-time Bengals offensive lineman Joe Walter. Dontarius James, a three-star recruit, is in his first year at Huntington Prep. James played the last three seasons at Andrew Jackson High in his hometown of Kershaw, S.C. James averaged 27.3 points, 12.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.4 blocks as a junior.
