2 UNC was on fall break Thursday and Friday, and no classes meant a bit more flexibility for team activities. The Tar Heels practiced in an earlier window both days than the usual 1 p.m. start. They used a free evening Thursday to make a pasta dinner for guests at the Chapel Hill Ronald McDonald House. UNC s 52 goals this season have come from 14 different players. Eight of those players didn t score a single goal last season. Senior Lauren Moyer leads UNC in goals this season with 12, two more than her career total coming into the season. Six of her goals have come in the team s five ACC games. Saturday s game is the second meeting of the year between UNC and Duke. The Tar Heels won the first 3-2 in Chapel Hill on Sept. 25. That game was a nonconference contest. The Tar Heels have scored a single goal total in this season s three losses. The defeats have come by scores of 1-0, 1-0 and 2-1. The Tar Heels beat the nation s No. 1 and No. 2 teams in back-to-back games last month, defeating top-ranked Syracuse 3-2 in double overtime on Sept. 23 and second-ranked Duke 3-2 on Sept. 25. Both of those games were played in Chapel Hill. Senior Julia Young was honored as the NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 28. Two of UNC s three ACC wins have come in overtime. UNC s home opener against Wake Forest on Sept. 10 marked the debut of the Fockey Band, a pep band devoted to Carolina field hockey. The Fockey Band will play at all home games this year. Five current Tar Heels were named to the U.S. Under-21 National team that will play in the Junior World Cup in Chile Nov. 24-Dec. 4. Those on the team are Kristy Bernatchez, Ashley Hoffman, Gab Major, Lauren Moyer and Julia Young. UNC s Statistical Leaders Goals: Lauren Moyer 12, Gab Major 8, Eva van t Hoog 6 Assists: Ashley Hoffman 8, Eva van t Hoog 5, Gab Major 4 Points: Moyer 26, Major 20, van t Hoog 17, Hoffman 12 The Fall s First Matchup with Duke Sept. 25: No. 5 UNC 3, No. 2 Duke 2 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. Tar Heel sophomore Eva van t Hoog scored twice in just over three minutes, tying the score then giving UNC the lead for good in a 3-2 field hockey win over No. 2 Duke Sunday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The win completed a stellar stretch for the fifth-ranked Tar Heels, who in consecutive games knocked off the top two teams in the national rankings, both of which arrived at Henry Stadium undefeated. Carolina, which is now 8-2 on the season, beat No. 1 Syracuse 3-2 in double overtime on Friday night. I m incredibly proud of our team it was a terrific weekend, UNC coach Karen Shelton said. To put together two big games like this was a huge confidence booster. I can t remember a time when we ve played No. 1 and No. 2 back to back. I told the team that this was an incredible opportunity, and they took the opportunity. Van t Hoog s first goal, which tied the game at 1-1, came in the 50th minute on a reverse stick shot from the left side after she beat a defender and carried the ball into the circle. Three minutes later she added another to give Carolina the lead for good. In traffic in front of the cage, she picked up the ball and sent a shot rolling through the legs of a defender and under Duke keeper Sammi Steele for a 2-1 Tar Heel advantage. It doesn t really matter who scored, it was just a great team effort, van t Hoog said. Especially in the second half, I think we showed a lot of maturity. UNC freshman Eef Andriessen added another goal in the 61st minute, working the ball around a defender and then shooting low into the cage for a 3-1 lead. The Tar Heels then took a timeout, and Duke capitalized on momentum coming out of the break. In the 62nd minute, Blue Devil Aisling Naughton got the ball after a takeaway in the circle. She missed on her first shot but recovered and shot again to score and draw Duke within a goal, 3-2. But the Carolina defense was able to hold for the final eight minutes and preserve the win. Duke jumped out early, with a goal on the first shot of the game. In the third minute of play, Ashley Kristen took a pass from Naughton and shot from the top-left of the circle into the right corner of the cage. The Tar Heels trailed 1-0 at the half after managing just two shots and one penalty corner in the first period. In the second half, however, they outshot Duke 9-3 and earned four penalty corners to none by the Blue Devils. We showed a lot of toughness and fitness in the second half, Shelton said. To come from behind is terrific for our team. After the game, Shelton noted the play of senior Emma Bozek, who shifted up to play at forward from her usual spot in the midfield. She gave us an unbelievable amount of energy 2016 NFCHA Poll Oct. 18 First-place votes in parentheses 1. Connecticut (32) 2. Duke (8) 3. Syracuse (3) 4. North Carolina (3) 5. Maryland 6. In the regular season, Carolina won 2-1 on Oct. 16 in Chapel Hill. Goals in that game came from current sophomore Malin Evert and graduate Casey Di Nardo. All the scoring happened in the first half, and UNC led 15-9 in shots while Duke had a 5-4 advantage in corners. In the NCAA semifinals, Carolina won 2-0 on Nov. 20 in Ann Arbor, Mich. Evert had both goals in that game. Eight of the current Tar Heel players started in last year s two games against Duke. Sophomore Malin Evert scored three times in last year s two games against the Blue Devils. Last Time vs. Liberty Oct. 29, 2015: No. 3 UNC 7, No. 10 Liberty 1 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. The third-ranked North Carolina field hockey team earned a decisive 7-1 win against No. 10 Liberty at Francis E. Henry Stadium. Coming off just their second loss of the season, the Tar Heels jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 18 minutes of play and rode that momentum to a victory that improved them to 14-2 on the season and 6-0 at home. I was very pleased with our team, coming off the Wake Forest loss, UNC coach Karen Shelton said. I think we were motivated. We identified some things that we wanted to do better, beginning with an unbelievable work ethic we wanted to outwork the other team. We did that in the first half and moved the ball very unselfishly and kept things simple. We can open teams up when we keep it simple and we re unselfish and we work hard, so I was very proud of our team. The Tar Heels fell 3-2 last Friday in their ACC finale, and Shelton said after the game that she felt like her team was out-hustled. So UNC made sure that would not be the case again and proved it with a flurry of first-half goals. Senior Casey Di Nardo scored the gamewinner in the eighth minute of play when she grabbed a loose ball in the circle following a UNC shot that was blocked and put it back from the left side for her 10th goal of the season. After that the goals came quickly, with the next just over two minutes later. Senior Nina Notman carried the ball into the circle and sent a shot to the right side of the cage, where sophomore Sam Night dove to tip it past the Liberty keeper and make the game 2-0. Night assisted on the next one, taking a pass from senior Emily Wold and giving it right back to set up Wold for her 11th goal of the season. In the 19th minute, freshman Malin Evert scored from mid-circle on a reverse stick shot to make the score 4-0. UNC continued the onslaught in the second half. In the 50th minute, freshman Ashley Hoffman scored on a penalty corner, assisted by Notman, whose two assists on the day doubled her season total. Just over a minute later, freshman Eva van t Hoog carried the ball to the end line and then sent a sharp pass to Wold just in front of the cage for the senior captain s second goal of the game. Carolina s final goal came in the 65th minute, when sophomore Gab Major scored her teamhigh 13th of the season on a pass from junior Julia Young. Liberty s only goal came on a penalty corner with two seconds on the clock when Abby Julius scored on a rebound. 4 Noting Coach Shelton Heading into her 36th season as coach of the Tar Heels, UNC s Karen Shelton sports a career record of She has coached UNC to six NCAA titles: 1989, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2007 and Shelton has led the Tar Heels to 19 ACC Championships, more than any other program in the conference. The head coach at Carolina since 1981, she has led the Tar Heels to winning records in all but two years: 1981 (8-9-1) and 2002 (9-11). Shelton is a five-time National Coach of the Year (most recently in 2009) and a nine-time ACC Coach of the Year (most recently in 2012). A longtime member of the U.S. National Team, she helped the squad to a bronze medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Thar remains the best U.S. women s field hockey finish in Olympic competition. Shelton is a member of the U.S. Field Hockey Association Hall of Fame, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, the West Chester Athletics Hall of Fame and the Chester County Sports Hall of Fame. national champion, received 25 first-place votes but a total of 898 points and started the year ranked No. 2. Connecticut, Duke and Virginia rounded out the top five, giving the ACC four of the top five teams in the preseason poll. In the ACC poll, UNC claimed 34 total points and four first-place votes in balloting by the league s head coaches. Virginia was second with one firstplace vote and 28 points. Syracuse is third, Duke fourth, Wake Forest fifth, Louisville sixth and Boston College seventh in the nation s most competitive conference. At the start of 2015, Carolina was picked No. 1 in the conference preseason poll and No. 2 in the national poll. Both predictions proved accurate, as the Tar Heels won the ACC Championship and fell in the NCAA Championship to finish as the runner-up. Bozek is Back Senior Emma Bozek is back in the Tar Heel lineup after spending last season on the sidelines as an undergraduate assistant coach. The business major from Cortlandt Manor, N.Y., had lung surgery in the summer of 2015 after being diagnosed with a congenital abnormality, a sequestered lung. An infection had developed in her left lung, requiring surgery and removal of half of that lung. During her recovery, her lung collapsed, setting her back again and keeping her from playing in She took a redshirt season and is back at full strength this fall. A regular throughout her career and starter as a sophomore and junior, she earned second-team All-ACC honors in 2014 when she led UNC in scoring. This season, she has started all 15 games and has four goals, including the gamewinner in overtime against Virginia.
