1 m e d i a a n d r e c r u i t i n g g u i d e Review Notebook Terps Have Another Season to Remember Terps Make 20th NCAA Tournament Appearance After a successful regular season, Maryland earned a 13th-consecutive NCAA Tournament berth, also the Terps 20th bid in the history of the program. It was also the program s 21st overall (including a 1979 showing in the AIAW Tournament). Hosting the first and second rounds for the fifth-straight year, Maryland opened with No. 10 Old Dominion, getting past the Lady Monarchs for the third time that season, 5-0. Unfortunately, the Terrapins were bounced in the second round, as Penn State was victorious in a wire-to-wire battle, 1-0. The Terps have an enviable NCAA Tournament past, posting a record all-time, also winning five National Championships, most recently in 2005 and Terps Set Attendance Records Maryland drew three crowds of over 1,000 fans three times in 2007, including an ACC-record (league competitions only) 1,734 on Sept. 22 against Wake Forest. The Terrapins also had a school-record 1,784 come out for their game against Boston University on Oct. 7. The Terrapins led the nation in total and average attendance. Maryland boasted 692 average fans at 12 home games, beating out North Carolina (537) and Michigan (487). Over 8,300 fans also filled the stands at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The next closest were the Tar Heels 5,914 fans in total attendance. Two Decades of Leadership Head coach Missy Meharg celebrated her 20th season as a head coach and 20th year on the Maryland bench. Meharg was honored for her years of service on Oct. 7 in front of a record-crowd 1,784 fans. Meharg has been the backbone of the Terps' success over the last 20 seasons, logging 345 career wins, which ranks among the top 10 all-time in NCAA history across all divisions. She has guided her teams to six ACC Tournament crowns and four national championships. O'Donnell Finalist for Honda Award, Earns Top ACC Honor Freshman Katie O Donnell had a decorated high school career and her first-collegiate season was a reflection of that. After leading the nation with 2.52 points per game, while scoring an ACC-best 18 goals and 53 points, while also leading the squad with 17 assists, O Donnell was selected a Honda Award top-four finalist. She was also voted the ACC s Offensive Player of the Year, the first Terrapin to garner a league player of the year honor in school history and the first to win the offensive honor since the award was created three years ago. O Donnell was also a first team All-American citation by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association and com, and was selected the web magazine s National Rookie of the Year. She was also picked ECAC Rookie of the Year NCAA Division I Field Hockey Attendance Report Team Total Att. Games Avg. Maryland 8, N. Carolina 5, Michigan 4, Penn State 3, Wake Forest 2, Northeastern 2, American 2, Delaware 2, Quinnipiac 2, Syracuse 2, Four Terps Named All-Americans All-American honors, as selected by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA), went to four Terrapins in 2007, including three who were selected to the first team. No other team in the country had three first-team selections. Junior Susie Rowe and senior Kathryn Masson were repeat selections on the first team, while freshman Katie O Donnell was also named to the first team. Senior Janneke van Leeuwen received her first-career national accolade, earning a place on the second team. It was the 17th-consecutive year Maryland has had at least three Terps selected All-Americans and have had at least one since It's All-Academic, Too Posting an impressive 3.30 cumulative team grade point average, Maryland was one of 43 squads to receive the National Field Hockey Coaches Team Award. The Terps high GPA was due, in large part, to seven members who achieved a 3.0 or better, including All-American Susie Rowe, earning a spot on the NFHCA s National Academic Squad. Joining Rowe are Sarah Scholl, making her third appearance on the team, Alicia Grater, Danielle Keeley, Kim Ziegler, Alicia Morawski and freshman Meghan Dean. Seven Terps also received academic nods from the ACC. Along with Dean, Rowe, Scholl and Ziegler, All-Americans Kathryn Masson and Janneke van Leeuwen, as well as, Mid-Atlantic All-Region pick Ameliet Rischen. Home Sweet Home The Terps ended the regular-season home slate with a perfect 10-0 mark, the second time in program history the team has swept the home schedule. It was also the third unbeaten home season all time. Maryland went 9-0 on its home field in 1987 and in 1992, it went to claim an unbeaten home season. It is the first time since the Terps moved to the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in 2003 they have won every home game in a regular season. Great Start! Maryland's 16-0 start to the season was the best in school history, breaking the previous mark of 12-0 set in Streaking Terps Maryland put together a a number of significant streaks in The Terps won their first 16 games of the season to open the campaign.the 16-game tear to start the season also extended another win streak which dated back to the 2006 NCAA Tournament, a 20-game tear, one win short of the school record of 21-straight victories. Freshman Katie O'Donnell also had a significant streak going. She posted at least a point in the Terps' first 10 games of the year. Terps in the Record Books Before closing their careers in College Park, Terps Kathryn Masson and Janneke van Leeuwen left their marks in the Terrapin record books. Van Leeuwen dished out 49 career assists as a Terrapin, ranking her in a tie for fourth all-time in the category. Masson can be found all over the goalkeeper records. She ended with a 0.94 career goals against average, second-best all-time and just.03 shy of tying the record. Her 236 saves over four years are fifth-most in the history of the program. Freshman Katie O'Donnell also made an immediate impact on the record book. Her 17 assists are tied for the seventh-most in a season by a Terp, while her 53 points are eight-most all-time. All-American Janneke van Leeuwen had a breakout season as a senior and ranks fourth all-time at Maryland in career assists.

Freshman Katie O'Donnell had a pair of goals and a pair of assists to pace the two-time NCAA Champion Terps. Playing in her first-collegiate game, O'Donnell scored an unassisted goal less than two minutes into the game. The score remained, 1-0, in the Terps (1-0) favor until they broke open the game in the 37th minute. Junior Susie Rowe converted on one of Maryland's nine penalty corners, with assists coming from senior Janneke van Leeuwen and O'Donnell. ACC Rookie of the Year and third team All-American sophomore Nicole Muracco tallied back-to-back goals in the 44th and 58th minutes to pad the lead. O'Donnell assisted on Muracco's second goal. Two seconds before the game was over, O'Donnell capped the afternoon with the team's fifth goal of the day at 69:58. The Terps were dominant, attempting 23 shots, while the Chippewas (0-1) only had two. Maryland also had nine penalty corners, shutting out CMU in the category. Maryland won its season opener for the 11th-straight year. The game also marked the beginning of head coach Missy Meharg's 20th season at the helm. Game 2 Aug. 27, 2007 #1 Terps 6, Northwestern 0 EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 1 Maryland closed out its season-opening trip with a second-straight victory, defeating host Northwestern, 6-0. Junior Susie Rowe and freshman Katie O'Donnell each tallied a pair of goals to lead the team to victory. The two-time NCAA Champions are 2-0 on the season, outscoring its opponents, 11-0, over the two games. The Terps left no room for doubt, scoring four of their six goals in the first half. Sophomore Nicole Muracco, who had two goals in the win against the Chippewas, was the first to score against the Wildcats (1-1) in the sixth minute. Classmate Ameliet Rischen scored for the first time this season in the 11th minute, getting a hand from senior Janneke van Leeuwen and sophomore Alexis Pappas on the penalty corner. Another five minutes later and the Terps added to their advantage. Rowe gave Maryland a 3-0 advantage as O'Donnell dished off the pass to Rowe. O'Donnell, who had a big game against CMU, scoring twice while handing out two assists, got on the board against Northwestern in the 31st minute. In the second half, it was Rowe and O'Donnell who each scored again, while the defense held on to the shutout and ended the game by the final margin of 6-0. Maryland peppered the NU goalies with 31 shots, while Wildcat goalkeeper Emily Kyle made 11 saves, with assistance from her team, which posted two more. Game 3 Aug. 31, 2007 #1 Terps 4, Old Dominion 1 NORFOLK, Va. - Two-time NCAA Champion Maryland took care of business for the third-straight game. The top-ranked Terps scored twice in the first half and four in the game to easily defeat sixth-ranked Old Dominion, 4-1. Old Dominion (0-2) is the first team to score on the Terps this season, doing so in the 48th minute of the game. Other than that, however, it was all Maryland, who remained undefeated at 3-0. Maryland led 2-0 at the break. The Terps struck early for their first goal of the game. Freshman Katie O'Donnell fed the ball from the top of the circle to sophomore All-American Nicole Muracco nearly five minutes into the contest, giving Maryland a 1-0 lead. O'Donnell would score the Terps' second goal in the 22nd minute of action. Junior All-American Susie Rowe had a high pass that hit the crossbar of the ODU cage, causing the ball to drop in front of the goal. O'Donnell was positioned perfectly to tap the ball into the open net. ODU's Jo Ann van Aswegen scored the Lady Monarchs' lone goal off a penalty corner. Teammate Titia Beek received the ball from van Aswegen on the push out and passed it right back, finding the gap in the cage just over 22 minutes into the second half. The goal cut Maryland's lead to 2-1. But the Terrapins responded, scoring twice in the game's final eight minutes. O'Donnell added her second tally of the evening, collecting a rebound off her own shot and fired off another to score a goal. Sophomore Ameliet Rischen added an insurance tally four minutes later. O'Donnell and Muracco have scored goals in Maryland's three games, while O'Donnell has scored twice and collected at least one assist in each of the games, as well. The tables turned in the second half as the Wolverine defense held the Terps scoreless in the second 35 minutes. Meanwhile, Heather Wiley and Kelly Fitzpatrick knocked goals in for the Wolverines to even the score. Wiley put her team on the board 14 minutes into the second period off of a pass from Paige Laytos, followed by Fitzpatrick who tapped in an unassisted tally off her own rebounded shot with eight minutes to spare in regulation. In the overtime, the teams battled for nearly six and a half minutes before O'Donnell scored on a penalty corner to clinch the victory for Maryland. The goal was her seventh on the season and has netted at least a goal in each of the Terps' first four games. Junior Susie Rowe earned the assist on the play. The Terps outcornered the Wolverines in the game 5-4, though neither team converted until O'Donnell's game-winning shot. The Terps also outshot their opponents by an astounding margin. Most notably, Maryland got off seven shots to Michigan's zero in the extra period. Game 5 Sept. 8, 2007 #1 Terps 4, Ohio State 1 Terrapin Invitational COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 1 Maryland toppled Ohio State, 4-1, in the opening game of the Terrapin Invitational. The Terps extended their win streak to nine games, dating back to the 2006 NCAA Tournament. Junior All-American Susie Rowe scored first for the Terps (5-0) off of a penalty corner and double assists by Katie O'Donnell and Janneke van Leeuwen with less than seven minutes elapsed in the game. The score remained 1-0 until 24:14 into the first half, when junior Sarah Scholl knocked in her first goal of the season off of a pass by sophomore All-American Nicole Muracco. O'Donnell and van Leeuwen combined again five minutes into the second half to assist junior Ellen Ott's penalty corner goal. Muracco went on to tally her seventh goal of the season and extend her scoring streak to five-straight games with an unassisted goal off of Ohio State goalie Lindsay Quintiliani's pads at the end of the second half to clinch the victory. For OSU (2-4), Yesenia Luces drove in the Buckeyes' only goal at the end of the first half. Open in front of the cage, Luces swept in the unassisted goal, her fifth of the season. Maryland outshot Ohio State, 24-3, and the Terps held the Buckeyes to zero shots in the second half while attempting 14 of their own. Maryland also outcornered OSU, 10-2, and connected on two. In the cage, Quintiliano saved eight shots while allowing four goals for the Buckeyes. In the second game of the afternoon, American topped Northeastern, 1-0. Terrapins Janneke van Leeuwen and Susie Rowe each had a pair of goals to lift the team over the Huskies. Maryland begins the season at 6-0 for the sixth-straight season, while the Huskies fall to 1-3. Earlier in the day, American topped Ohio State, 3-1, as six different Eagles earned points in the win. Freshman Katie O'Donnell and sophomore Brianna Davies started things off for the Terps in the first half, each scoring an unassisted goal. O'Donnell leads Maryland scorers with eight goals and eight assists, scoring in five of the Terps' first six games. Senior Janneke van Leeuwen and junior All-American Susie Rowe each scored twice in the second half to help Maryland pull away from Northeastern. Van Leeuwen netted both unassisted tallies off the rebounds, while both of Rowe's goals came off of penalty corners. Northeastern goalie Liz Centofani was bombarded with 28 shots on goal, saving 16. The Maryland defense was equally as dominating, limiting the Huskies to just two shots, which were saved by goalkeepers senior Kathryn Masson and junior Alicia Grater combined efforts in the cage. The No. 1 Terps got off to a good start in ACC play, traveling to No. 11 Boston College for the opening conference game of the season. The Terps scored once in each half then kept the Eagles off the board to come away with a 2-0 victory. Maryland (7-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first half, taking advantage of one if its five penalty corners in the period. In the 13th minute, junior All-American Susie Rowe hammered a shot into the back of the net, with assists coming from freshman Katie O'Donnell and senior Janneke van Leeuwen. It was the 44th assist of van Leeuwen's career, placing her in the top five at Maryland all-time. The Eagles (5-2) did not have an answer for the Terps, as the teams played evenly for most of the rest of the game. In the 62nd minute, however, sophomore All-American Nicole Muracco knocked in an insurance goal, hitting the top-left corner of the cage to make the score 2-0. Maryland, who posted its fourth shut out of the season, held the edge in shots, outshooting BC, 11-7, as senior All-American Kathryn Masson made three saves. Her counterpart, Julia Berkowitz made seven in the Eagles' cage. Four different Terrapins scored in the win despite facing the top goalkeeper in the nation. The Terps remain one of just three undefeated teams in the country. American's goalkeeper Alyssa Poorman had allowed just four goals in the team's first eight games of the season and boasted the top goals against average in the country. AU (8-1) seemed to be in control from the onset. In the first half, Maryland had just five shots and no penalty corners, but it made the most of its opportunities. After AU's had a wide shot on a penalty corner 10 minutes into the game, Maryland countered on the restart and broke down field. Freshman Katie O'Donnell sprinted down the sideline and took a running shot from the top of the circle to the opposite post, finding the back of the net, giving Maryland a 1-0 lead. It was the Terps' first shot of the game. With less than three minutes to go in the period, Maryland again countered on another Eagle penalty corner, causing a breakaway situation for the Terps. Sophomore Nicole Muracco made a long pass to O'Donnell who was unmarked in the shooting circle, causing the goalkeeper to come out of the cage. O'Donnell tried to flick the shot in, but was caught under AU's Poorman and the referee blew the whistle for the penalty stroke. On the stroke, junior Susie Rowe did not falter, giving the Terps a 2-0 cushion. The second half was more evenly matched, as the teams seem to control the game equal time. The Eagles continued to draw penalty corners, nine in total for the game. But Maryland's backfield, which is also ranked in the top five in the nation, pressured AU on the corners, limiting it to just one shot on its nine attempts. The Terps added two more goals in the second half to claim the 4-0 win. In the 47th minute, senior Janneke van Leeuwen collected the ball at the top of the circle, squared up and sailed a shot past the goalie for the Terps s third goal. In the 68th minute, Muracco redirected O'Donnell's long shot to the far post, for Maryland's final goal of the day. Maryland was outshot, 11-10, and outcornered, 9-3, with all three of its corners coming in the second half. Senior Kathryn Masson, who came into the game with the nation's fourth-best goals against average, had three saves, leading the Terps to its fifth shutout of the season. Game 9 Sept. 22, 2007 #2 Maryland 3, #5 Wake Forest 2 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Second-ranked Maryland edged past ACC-foe and fifth-ranked Wake Forest, 3-2, in front of an ACC record attendance of 1,734 at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Terrapin high-scorer freshman Katie O'Donnell scored two unassisted goals, leading the Terps to their 13th-consecutive victory, dating back to the 2006 NCAA Tournament. In what has turned into the one of the ACC's biggest rivalries, Maryland (9-0, 2-0) never trailed, taking an early lead just over one and a half minutes into the game, 1-0. Despite being covered by two defenders, freshman Katie O'Donnell found an opening between Wake goalkeeper Crystal Duffield's legs and scored the game's first goal. Exactly four minutes later, the Demon Deacons (5-3, 1-1 ACC) responded. On one of its three first-half penalty corners, Michelle Kasold Staples in the Maryland lineup, Janneke van Leeuwen and Kathryn Masson each left their marks in the school record books. took a hard shot towards the goal cage and Aileen Davis deflected the ball into the back of the net for the equalizer. It was the first goal the Terps had allowed in nearly 219 minutes, dating back to Sept. 8. Maryland took advantage of its own penalty corner in the 15th minute on a similar play. After senior Janneke van Leeuwen inserted the ball into play, the shot on the corner came her way and she put her stick down for the deflection. WFU's Duffield made the save, but could not stop van Leeuwen's second shot off the rebound, giving Maryland back the lead, 2-1. The one-goal advantage would stand until late in the game. With 20 minutes remaining, it was Kasold, again, who would do the damage. A shot from inside the circle was blocked by a Terrapin defender, but the rebound landed in front of her and she knocked it in for the tying goal, 2-2. After Maryland head coach Missy Meharg called timeout, the Terrapins' intensity seemed to shoot up. Controlling the game down the stretch, the Terps had an opportunity to take the lead on a breakaway and a 3-on-1 situation with the Deac's goalkeeper. Sophomore Ameliet Rischen passed off towards a breaking O'Donnell. But before the pass could get to O'Donnell, sophomore Nicole Muracco touched the ball, slowing down the speed, which O'Donnell was able to better control. Facing only the goalie, O'Donnell faked one way, then took off another way, leaving Duffield behind and finding a wide open cage for the eventual game-winning tally. Maryland has had four attendance's over 1,000 since the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex opened four years ago. Game 10 Sept. 26, 2007 #2 Terps 4, Princeton 1 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 2 Maryland was tested by Princeton, but the Tigers could not keep pace as the Terrapins claimed a 4-1 victory. Junior Sarah Scholl recorded a pair of assists, including assisting on the game winner. The Terps improved to 10-0 on the season and is one of two undefeated teams remaining in the country. They also extended their win streak to 14 games, dating back to last season's NCAA Tournament. Maryland had just one penalty corner in the game but was executed to perfection. After the push out by senior Janneke van Leeuwen, freshman Katie O'Donnell made the stop to set up junior Susie Rowe, who slammed the ball into the back of the cage, giving the Terrapins a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of the game. Princeton (4-3) threatened the lead, but the Terp defense made crucial stops along the way. Maryland added to its advantage, jumping ahead 2-0, in the 25th minute. Looking to create some chaos, Scholl was off balanced and sent a pass into the circle to junior Kim Ziegler. Ziegler took a swing and slapped the ball into the net to score. The Tigers fought to within 2-1, however, as Kaitlin Donovan found herself open in front of the cage for the easy goal. The score would stand until the halftime break. In the second half, Maryland was more in control of the tempo. The Terrapins pounced on two scoring opportunities to score twice more. Scholl passed from the baseline behind Princeton's goalkeeper, finding junior Danielle Keeley on the receiving end in the 55th minute. O'Donnell got back into the act and added another score in the 67th minute. Getting the ball at the top of the circle, she made her way through the defenders, to the baseline and around the goalkeeper for the wide-open tally. Maryland outshot Princeton, 14-13, and was outcornered, 6-2. However, the Tigers' could not get past the Terrapin backfield, who did not allow a goal on the opportunities. Sophomore goalkeeper Alicia Grater entered the game in the last 23 minutes without having an opportunity to warm up and made two key saves to keep Princeton off the board. Game 11 Sept. 29, 2007 #2 Terps 4, #19 Virginia 0 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 2 Maryland defeated ACC opponent and 19th-ranked Virginia. Leading 1-0 at halftime, the Terrapins turned up the offensive pressure in the second half to clinch the 4-0 victory over the Cavaliers. The Terps (11-0, 2-0) displayed team work and unselfish play for the second-straight game as four different players scored. In the fourth minute of the game, sophomore Nicole Muracco put the Terps on the board by knocking in the rebound off of saved penalty corner shot attempt. The goal was Muracco's 10th of the season. Maryland would not score again until the second half when junior Sarah Scholl dodged the goalie and drove the ball into the center of the open cage for her second tally of the season. Senior Janneke van Leeuwen followed with an unassisted goal of her own in the 49th minute, pushing in a rebound to the back of the cage. A hard shot to the back of the cage by sophomore Ameliet Rischen in the 58th minute rounded out Maryland's scoring.

The Cavaliers took 10 of their 13 attempts in the second period, but goalkeepers senior Kathryn Masson and sophomore Alicia Grater were able to fend off the UVA attack to maintain the shutout. Grater amassed four saves in the final 20 minutes, including three in a one-minute span. Masson also contributed four saves. Maryland's winning streak stretched to 15 games, dating back to the first round of last year's NCAA Tournament, but another streak came to a halt. Game 12 Sept. 30, 2007 #2 Terps 3, Temple 1 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Second-ranked Maryland fought past regional-foe Temple, 3-1, in the Terps' third game of the week. The Terps won their 12th-straight game of the season, tying the program record for the best start to a season set during last year's championship run. The loss brought Temple's five-game winning streak to an end as the Owls fell to 9-4. Scoreless through the first 21 minutes of play, sophomore Alexis Pappas put the Terps on the board with an unassisted goal off a rebound for her first tally of the year. Junior Susie Rowe followed eight minutes later with sophomore Ameliet Rischen assisting on the goal. In the 31st minute, Temple's Kasey Ruth and Alli Lokey charged Terrapin goalie Kathryn Masson in a 2-on-1 situation. Lokey dribbled straight on towards the goal, dishing the pass to Ruth who knocked the ball into the right corner of the cage to cut Maryland's lead to 2-1. The score remained 2-1 until nearly 30 minutes into the second half, but Maryland sophomore Nicole Muracco drove in a goal off of a pass from sophomore Brianna Davies on the baseline. The Terps outshot the Owls by an astounding 39-9 margin during the contest, as well as, earning 17 penalty corners to Temple's four. Freshman Katie O'Donnell paced the Terrapin attack, scoring a goal while dishing out a pair of assists. Maryland (13-0, 4-0) trailed for the first time all year after Amie Survilla put the Blue Devils (7-6, 1-3) ahead, 1-0, in the sixth minute of the game. Duke held onto that lead until late in the half. Maryland tied the score in the 32nd minute on a 2-on-1 breakaway as O'Donnell passed off to sophomore Nicole Muracco in the circle for Maryland's first goal of the game. The Terps came out in the second half firing away, peppering DU goalkeeper Caitlin Williams with four shots in the first five minutes. Williams stopped three while the Terps' fourth shot went wide. Just two minutes into the contest, Hanna Warren put Old Dominion (8-6) on the board with a penalty-corner goal assisted by Shannon Mobley. The early Monarch lead marked only the second time the Terps trailed all season. Maryland evened the score in the 16th minute, as junior Susie Rowe dished a hard pass from the top of the circle to senior Janneke van Leeuwen on the end line to the left of the goal. Van Leeuwen executed a hard flick over the goalkeeper for the score. It was the seventh shutout of the season for the Terps. Freshman Katie O'Donnell scored the deciding goal just 1:03 into the game. The game remained close until just before the end of the first half when junior Susie Rowe gave the Terrapins a 2-0 lead. It was the first of two goals for the 2006 All-American. Maryland (16-0) broke the game wide open in the second period. Van Leeuwen went on a tear, having a hand in all five of the Terps' second-half tallies. She gave the team a three-goal cushion in the 50th minute on a penalty corner. In the 53rd minute, she assisted on junior Ellen Ott's penalty-corner goal. Almost three minutes after that, van Leeuwen scored again, before assisting on the Terps' sixth goal of the game, also on a penalty corner. Van Leeuwen capped the scoring as Ott assisted on her career-high third goal of the afternoon. On the other end of the field, the defense also had an outstanding performance, posting its seventh shutout of the season. The Terps also limited Delaware, who fell to 9-6 on the season, to just one shot for the game. Maryland outshot the Blue Hens, 25-1, and outcornered them, Van Leeuwen collected a career-high eight points. The two assists also upped her career total to 49 in her four seasons, which moves her into a tie for fourth all-time. The loss also snapped a 20-game Terrapin win streak, which dated back to the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament. All-American goalkeeper Kathryn Masson made nine saves in the loss. Both teams entered the game with a 16-0 record and were looking to clinch the ACC regular season title and the top seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament. Neither team relented, as the score remained scoreless until the 56th minute of the game. North Carolina (17-0, 5-0) made several threats, attempting 23 total shots for the game, 14 coming in the first half. But Maryland s Masson kept the Tar Heels at bay, turning away six shots in the opening period. The battle continued well into the second half until UNC's Alli Tanner's shot from the left side made its way past Masson, breaking the stalemate. About 12 minutes later, Katelyn Falgowski added a second tally to make the score 2-0. Jesse Gey then sealed the win with North Carolina's third goal with just under two minutes left. While Maryland's (16-1, 4-1) defense, which is ranked in the top five in the nation, did a solid job of keeping the No. 1 offense in the nation off the board for nearly 56 minutes, the UNC defense, also ranked in the top five, shutout the Terps in the category of shots and penalty corners. Game 18 Oct. 26, 2007 #2 Terps 5, Villanova 1 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Second-ranked Maryland handily defeated Villanova, 5-1, in the final regular-season game for the Terps. "I'm really proud of this team," said 20th-year Maryland head coach Missy Meharg. "The leadership from the seniors this season has been exceptional. To have a 17-1 regular season record is really a tribute to their character." Senior Janneke van Leeuwen shined in her final regular-season home game as a Terp, scoring Maryland's first two tallies. In the 10th minute, van Leeuwen netted a shot from the end line off of a successful penalty corner play with the assist coming from junior Ellen Ott. Villanova's high scorer Lauren Wuzzardo retaliated three minutes later, driving in an unassisted goal from the top of the circle, equalizing the score, 1-1. But it did not take long for the Terps to reclaim the lead. Ott clinched the win with 10 minutes left on the clock, knocking in a shot on a pass from freshman Katie O'Donnell. Also playing in her final regular-season home game, senior goalkeeper Kathryn Masson ended the game with four saves in less than 58 minutes of playing time, making a couple of dramatic saves to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard. With the win, the 2007 seniors picked up their 82nd career victory, putting them second at Maryland among the senior classes, behind only last year's 83-win senior class. Sophomore Nicole Muracco scored the Terps' only goal of the game, while senior goalkeeper Kathryn Masson made five saves. Maryland took control of the game early on, striking first when the league's Offensive Player of the Year freshman Katie O'Donnell fed a pass to Muracco in front of the goal for a 1-0 lead. The Deacons, however, slowly began to seize the momentum, which had been primarily in the Terps favor. Maryland held a 1-0 lead until WF's Aileen Davis notted the game at 1-1, knocking in a pass from Minou Gimbere at 46:10. The teams battles back and forth for the next 20 minutes. Masson made a save on a Wake Forest shot and, on the ensuing scramble, Chelsea Cipriani punched in the deciding goal with just over a minute remaining in the game. Masson's five saves all came at crucial moments, including two diving stops. Her counterpart in the Wake Forest cage had three stops. The loss is only the second for Maryland, who falls to 17-2 on the season. Game 20 Nov. 10, 2007 #2 Terps 5, #10 Old Dominion 0 NCAA Tournament COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Second-seeded Maryland solidly defeated No. 10 Old Dominion, 5-0, to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Terps received scoring from five different players, and goalkeepers senior Kathryn Masson and junior Alicia Grater combined efforts for 10 saves and the shutout. The game was evenly matched in the first half, with the only goal coming from Maryland sophomore Nicole Muracco at the three-minute mark. On a dish from junior Sarah Scholl, Muracco executed a dodge to get Old Dominion goalie Kelly Driscoll leaning, and slammed the ball into the right side of the cage. The 1-0 score would stand until halftime. Maryland junior Ellen Ott broke open a Terps' scoring spree in the second half with a penalty corner deflection for a goal at 37:16, assisted by junior Susie Rowe. Rowe got on the board again two minutes later with a successful penalty stroke, faking Driscoll to the left and flicking to the right center of the cage. The Terps end the season with an 18-3 record overall. The game was scoreless until the 22-minute mark when Penn State's Shaun Banta crossed the ball in front of the goal from the right end line. Britney Long was in perfect position on the right side of the cage to put her stick on it divert it into the goal. In the cage, Maryland All-American Kathryn Masson saved four shouts in the game effort. PSU s Jen Beaumont had nine saves while holding the Terps scoreless. The Terps actually outshot the Nittany Lions 14-6, including nine shots in the second half. With Penn State's defense hunkered down close to the goal, Maryland had a difficult time breaking free for open looks. The Terps also outcornered Penn State, 6-2, but were unable to convert the opportunities. "We will miss the three seniors tremendously," said Meharg. "The big positive for the future is that there is a tremendous amount of character, some great hockey players, and women who have experienced being in a championship situation returning to this team.
