1 2013 SEASON RECAP UMASS FIELD HOCKEY FINISHES A10 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS and REACHES ELITE 8! The University of Massachusetts field hockey team finished its 2013 season with a 19-5 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals after it won the Atlantic 10 Championship for the second consecutive season. In her third year as head coach, Carla Tagliente led the program to the third-most wins in NCAA Division I field hockey and the No. 10 national ranking according to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association of America (NFHCA) Top-20 Poll. Richmond offered the strongest challenge to the Minutewomen during A-10 play as each side entered the Oct. 25 matchup undefeated. With control of the top spot in the conference on the line, UMass used penalty shots following double-overtime to claim the victory, 2-1. The Maroon and White went on the No. 1 seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament with victories over VCU and Lock Haven while Massachusetts needed to overcome a two-goal deficit at Saint Francis to win, 4-3 in overtime to secure its undefeated A-10 record. The Minutewomen began the season with five consecutive victories, including winning the University of Maine Invitational to start the year with a 2-1 decision over the host-black Bears before a 3-2 come-frombehind victory against No. 9 nationally-ranked Michigan. After securing the Kennedy Cup with a 6-0 shutout of UMass-Lowell, the Maroon and White blanked Harvard, 3-0 and held off No. 19 Boston College with a 4-2 victory to improve to 5-0 on the young season. With the No. 1 seed to the Atlantic 10 Tournament in-hand, UMass opened against fourth-seed VCU and required an Allymohamed goal in the 91st minute to record the victory and advance to the championship game. The Maroon and White added a second victory over Richmond, 2-1 in the tournament finale to claim the title and outright berth into the NCAA Tournament. UMass suffered its first loss the following weekend as it dropped a 2-1 game to host-syracuse, the No. 7 team in the nation at the time. After a bounce-back win over Ohio State, 1-0, the Minutewomen fell at eventual NCAA National Champion UConn, 4-1. The up-and-down play by the squad continued as Massachusetts dispatched Hofstra, 5-1 before suffering its only loss after leading on the season, a 3-2 defeat by New Hampshire in overtime. Another challenge in No. 2 Maryland followed as the Minutewomen faltered, 4-1 on Sept. 28 in what became their final regular season loss of the year. Approaching its conference slate, UMass amped up its offense and finished the regular season with eight consecutive victories. The Minutewomen drew No. 7 Virginia for the first round in a contest played at Duke University. The resiliency exhibited throughout the season was on display against the Cavaliers as UMass rallied from a trio of one-goal deficits to drop Virginia, 4-3 in overtime. One day after the exhilarating win, Massachusetts' season came to a close against the host-blue Devils as the Minutewomen fell to the eventual NCAA National Championship runners-up, 4-1 on their home turf. Brooke Sabia notched her 20th goal of the season during the finale to cut a two-goal deficit in half; however, No. 5 Duke's offense responded with back-to-back goals to seal its win.

Sophomore Sam Carlino and Senior Hannah Prince were both chosen for the US Under-21 National team, while Freshman Charlotte Verelst played for her home country of Belgium. Prince and Carlino, a defender and goalie respectively, finished seventh overall with their final 4-2 win over South Africa. Verelst finished thirteenth overall, but ended with a win in penalty strokes over Canada. We are so proud that UMass has representatives on an International level! Congratulations on your hard work and commitment to the sport! Sikalis Chosen as Fall Scholar-Athlete Senior was announced as the Female Fall Scholar-Athlete by the Athletic department in the fall. Sikalis tallied the secondmost assists in Division I field hockey with 20 as a senior during the 2013 season. She also provided a pair of goals for 24 points on the year and was named NFHCA Second Team All-America and First Team All-Region in addition to being selected to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team and All-Academic Team. She is preparing to graduate with a Biology degree this May. This is the second consecutive year that a field hockey team member has been selected for this prestigious award.

3 Winter Updates Banquet The UMass Team, families and supporters gathered one last time in February to celebrate a successful 2013 journey highlighted by an Elite 8 Appearance and an Atlantic 10 Championship. Season accolades and accomplishments were recognized, and various awards voted on by the team were announced. In addition, our 2013 senior class was formally recognized one last time for their contribution and dedication to the program. To our parents, alumni, and supporters- Thank you for all of your support through all of our successes and low points. The 5-foot-7 defender from Sydney, Australia, simultaneously contributed 58 points on offense through 20 goals and 18 assists in 89 games played, including 85 starts. Makaela Potts

Going to university is an extremely significant milestone for every teenager. Moving away from home can be terrifying as college forces you to be independent because your parents are hours away. However, home for me is over 3000 miles away and moving to UMASS was the one of the biggest decisions of my life. I was obviously very nervous to be so far away from my family, but 7 months down the line at UMASS I now have a whole new family of friends in America. great support system of teammates, coaches, trainers, professors and academic advisors. The American university system has allowed me to embrace numerous opportunities that I wouldn't have been privileged to do in Europe. Coming to UMASS has been the best decision of my life and I can't picture myself anywhere else. I'm looking forward to my next 3 years at UMASS, excelling on the field and in the classroom. -Hannah Farrell 17 Within the first few weeks of field hockey pre season I knew I had already made some life long friends. Even though I was a brand new, nervous, confused, foreign freshman everyone was always so welcoming and helpful. There may have been a few language barriers, pronunciation confusions and vocabulary differences but we always laughed it off in the dorms or on the field. Although I'm thousands of miles away from home I am extremely happy here at UMASS and I consider it my second home. I still have daily contact with my friends and family in England and I FaceTime/ Skype them weekly. Being on the field hockey team has provided me with an amazing group of friends and I'm honoured to be looked after by such a

6 Spring Updates... Cockrum Accepted into Commonwealth Honors College Recently, Freshman Hailey Cockrum applied and was accepted into the Commonwealth Honors College. The Honors College expanded and built their own living and learning area that was finished in August Cockrum is currently a Freshman enrolled in the Isenberg Business School. Her enrollment in the nationally ranked Isenberg Business School is a huge accomplishment in itself. Currently, the UMass field hockey team has five team members enrolled in the business school including Cockrum, freshman Katie Clark, freshman Cliodhna Loughlin, senior Molly MacDonnell, and freshman Charlotte Verelst.
