Cardinals (11-5-1, MAC) What s On Tap... The Cardinals close out the 2007 regular season on the road as they battle arch rival Miami this afternoon. The Cardinals enter the finale in sole possession of first place as they hold a one-point lead over second place Toledo at Each victory in conference play is awarded three points, while a tie gains one point. The regular season championship will be decided by the outcome of the Cardinals game against Miami and/or the outcome of Toledo s game at home against Bowling Green. MAC Tournament... All eight spots in the 2007 Mid- American Conference Tournament have been clinched heading into today s games. The Cardinals have clinched at least a top two seed in the tournament and a first round home game which will be played Sunday at 1 p.m. at the BSU Soccer Field. Regional Rankings... remained in the Soccerbuzz.com Great Lakes Regional rankings this week. The Cardinals garnered enough votes to sit No. 15 in the region, marking the second straight week in the regional rankings. The Cardinals are the only team in the MAC to be regional ranked, although Toledo is one of at November 1, 2007 Miami Soccer Field Oxford, Ohio 4 p.m. three schools to be receiving votes. The Great Lakes Region is comprised of 55 schools, including teams from conferences like the Big Ten and Big East. The Cardinals are also receiving votes in the NSCAA/Adidas Great Lakes Regional poll which ranks the top 10 teams. Series History... Today s game is the 10th meeting all-time between the Cardinals and the RedHawks. The series has been an evenly matched affair through its history with the teams deadlocked at all-time against each other. The Cardinals have won the past four regular season meetings against Miami. Last season, the Cardinals closed out the regular season and clinched their first ever MAC championship with a 4-2 victory over the Red- Hawks. Miami got revenge only four days later as it knocked the top-seeded Cardinals out of the MAC Tournament with a 2-1 victory in Muncie. In the regular season meeting, the Cardinals struck early against the RedHawks as former Cardinal Sarah Maxwell scored off of a corner kick from defender Lindsay Martin in the sixth minute. The Cardinals struck again from the corner as Martin found Vandi Ogden in the 13th minute to give BSU the early lead.

Michigan After a Miami goal in the 15th minute closed the first half scoring, the Cardinals came out in the second half and scored two goals in a span of seven minutes to put the game out of reach. Midfielder Annie Aiello found the back of the net in the 55th minute off of passes from Sarah Leibel and Emily Rein. Rein closed out the Cardinals scoring in the 62nd minute as she rifled a shot off of the post and into the back of the net. Aiello picked up an assist on the fourth goal. In the MAC Tournament, the Cardinals dominated play as they out-shot the RedHawks by a margin, including a 16-7 advantage in the second half. Miami goalkeeper Krista Pace turned in a strong effort as she tallied a gamehigh 11 saves. Miami opened the scoring in the 17th minute off of a corner kick. The RedHawks took a two-goal lead in the second half off of a free kick and Pace controlled the goal to keep the Cardinals at bay. finally found the back of the net in the 86th minute as Aiello found Rein in behind the defense and she buried a header to narrow the deficit to one goal. MAC Season Finales... Today s game is the ninth Mid- American Conference season finale in Cardinal history. is all-time in MAC finales, including a mark over the past six seasons. This season marks the third straight in which the Cardinals have closed the MAC year against arch rival Miami. Junior goalkeeper Rachael Murphy is third in career wins (23), third in career shutouts (15) and fourth in saves (112). Junior Sarah Schumacker is 10th all-time in scoring with 25 points, classmate Katelyn Alexander is 11th with 23 points and Annie Aiello is tied for 12th in scoring with 21 career points. Did You Know?... The Cardinals will wrap up their regular season ending three-game road swing this afternoon at Miami. This road trip marks the first time in the program s nineyear history that the Cardinals have closed the season with three straight road games. Scouting The Cardinals... enters today s game with an overall record and sits alone in first place in the MAC with an conference mark. The Cardinals are coming off of a 2-1 victory at Kent State on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals have scored 23 goals so far this season with seven different players finding the back of the net. Junior forward Emily Rein leads the team in scoring with 17 points as she has scored six goals and dished out five assists. Three different players are tied for second on the team in scoring with 10 points each. Senior Sarah Leibel and junior Sarah Schumacker have scored four goals and handed out two assists. Junior Katelyn Alexander has added three goals and is second on the team with four assists. Junior midfielder Annie Aiello has recorded four goals, all from the penalty spot. Junior goalkeeper Rachael Murphy leads the Cardinal defense as she owns a 0.57 goals against average overall and a 0.38 mark in conference play. Miami enters today s game with a overall record and a mark in Mid-American Conference play. The RedHawks secured a bid into the 2007 MAC Tournament last weekend with a 2-1 victory at Buffalo. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the RedHawks in conference play. Miami has scored 23 goals so far this season and has allowed 24 goals against. Leading the charge offensively is Sara Lund who has scored seven goals and handed out five assists. Also, Julie Thomas is second on the team with five goals on the year. In goal, sophomore goalkeeper Krista Pace leads Miami as she owns a 1.36 goals against average. She is already the all-time leader in Miami history in saves with 116. Looking Back... The Cardinals are coming off of a strong 2-1 road victory at MAC foe Kent State on Sunday as they rebounded from their first conference loss of the season. scored two goals in a span of two minutes in the first half to take the early lead. Junior forward Emily Rein started the scoring as she attacked the KSU defense and was hauled down just inside the midfield for a Cardinal free kick. Freshman defender Kristina Anderson took the set piece and sent the ball into the 18-yard box. Rein was able to bring the ball down 10- yards out and blasted a shot into the lower corner for the first goal on the game in the 39th minute. The Cardinals maintained their pressure as they took a two-goal lead in the 41st minute. Sophomore midfielder Megan Ridley took a ball inside the box and flicked it behind her to an on-charging Sarah Schumacker. Schumacker took the ball and one-touched a rifle of a shot past the diving KSU goalkeeper Kris Nelson for a 2-0 Ball State lead. Kent State finally struck for a goal in the 59th minute as Kimberly Dimitroff saved a ball on the end line and sent a cross back into the box. Josee Charron took the cross and blasted a shot into the back of the net to narrow the Ball State lead to 2-1. The Cardinals defense clamped down late in the game and held off the Golden Flashes to preserve the victory. Junior goalkeeper Rachael Murphy recorded eight saves in the victory as she posted her 10th win of the season and 24th victory of her career. Hitting Her Mark... Junior midfielder Annie Aiello leads the team and is tops in the conference with four penalty kick goals this season. Aiello, who entered the season without a career penalty kick goal, is four-for-four from the spot this season. Her four penalty kick goals are already the most in a single season in Ball State history. Stifling Defense... leads the MAC this season on defense as the Cardinals have only allowed 12 goals against overall through 17 games, including just four goals against in eight MAC contests. The Cardinals posted a school record seven straight shutouts earlier this season. Junior goalkeeper Rachael Murphy was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week earlier this season. Murphy and the Cardinal defense posted back-to-back shutouts against Northern Illinois and Western Michigan to run their shutout streak to seven straight games. Fresh off of its first ever Mid- American Conference regular season championship, the soccer team has been picked as the preseason favorite to win the MAC regular season and the MAC Tournament by league coaches. This is the first time in program history that the Cardinals have been picked as preseason favorite and the first time BSU has been picked higher than fifth (2005) in the preseason rankings. is returning 17 letterwinners and eight starters from a team last year. The Cardinals led the MAC in almost every offensive category last season and return all three starting forwards from a team that scored 39 goals in 20 games. also finished third in the conference in fewest goals allowed at 22. Junior forward Emily Rein, a First Team All-MAC selection, highlights the returnees as she finished tied for the team lead in 2006 with nine goals and led the team in scoring with 22 points. Senior forward Sarah Leibel and junior forward Sarah Schumacker each tallied four goals last season to finish tied for third in goals scored. The Cardinals led the MAC last season with 35 assists and had six players dish out at least four assists apiece. Senior Lindsay Martin, junior Annie Aiello and Schumacker each finished tied for eighth in the conference with five assists. also returns junior goalkeeper Rachael Murphy, who was one of just three goalkeepers in the MAC to play every second in goal. Murphy also finished tied for second in the conference with seven shutouts and fourth with a 1.05 goals against average. Hitting The Airwaves... For the first time in program history, the Cardinals will have all regular season home games broadcast by 91.3 WCRD FM and online at this season. students Eric Ryan, James Rider and Levin Black will provide play-by-play and commentary duties all season long for the Cardinals. 9 Michelle Salmon enters her second season as head coach of the soccer team after turning in one of the best seasons in program history during her inaugural campaign. Salmon guided the Cardinals to their first ever Mid-American Conference regular season championship last fall as she earned MAC Coach of the Year honors. She guided the Cardinals to a overall record and an mark in MAC action. The Cardinals 13 victories are third most ever in a single season while the eight conference wins are tied for most in program history. She guided the Cardinals to a regional ranking in nine out of the 13 weeks during her first season (Great Lakes Region Soccerbuzz). Under her tutelage, the Cardinals excelled both on and off of the field. The Cardinals had four players earned First Team All- MAC honors (Sarah Maxwell, Amy Holst, Emily Rein and Vandi Ogden), marking the first time in program history that feat has been accomplished. She also placed three players on the NSCAA All-Region team, which is the first time BSU has had multiple players on the All-Region squad. Senior midfielder Amy Holst also became the Cardinals first ever ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American as she earned second team accolades last fall. BSU also had three players named Academic All- MAC under Salmon s guidance. Prior to, Salmon spent six seasons as head coach at University of Maryland, Baltimore County. In just her second year at the helm of the program, she led the squad to the Northeast Conference Tournament finals and tutored the Retrievers to a second-place league finish with an mark. She helped UMBC bounce back from a record in its last season the Northeast Conference to a record and a playoff berth in its first year in the America East Conference. The Retrievers qualified for the America East Conference Tournament in two out of three years under Salmon s guidance. A former All-American in soccer at Maryland, Salmon served as UMBC s assistant coach in 1999 before being appointed head coach prior to the 2000 season. A USSF A license coach, Salmon has served as a senior regional staff member of the United States Youth Soccer Association, where she helped evaluate players development and impact on the regional scene. She has also been the assistant coach of the United States Under-15 National Team and served as the USYSA Under-16 regional team head coach. Salmon brings a plethora of playing experience to the program. UMBC UMBC UMBC UMBC UMBC UMBC Career 8 seasons Head Coach Michelle Salmon outstanding career second on the Terrapins all-time assists list. Salmon participated on the United States Olympic Festival squad in 1998 and represented the United States as a member of the Under-20 National team from 1993 to 1995, as well as the Under- 16 Team in Salmon was a high school All-American at Old Mill and was inducted into the school s Hall of Fame. She still holds the Anne Arundel County scoring record with 90 goals and 15 assists.
