April 2014 Message From the President Happy Spring Everyone, Rink in the Park 99 Seagram Drive Waterloo, Ontario, N2L-3B6 Phone: (519) Fax: (519) Website: Manager: Jim Uhrig Office: Karen Lowe President: Doug Suerich Sec. Treasurer: Bill Hume VP Admin: Sherri Helmka VP Curling: Kathy Ryan Lady s Rep: Ardith Toogood Men s Rep: Gary Crossley Directors at Large: Fred Lehmann Mark Fisher Pam MacCollum Another fantastic curling season is in the books. Congratulations to all our champions! Your club won three provincial banners, plus a CIS University Banner, and numerous silver and bronze medals at all levels. Congratulations also to our Traveller s Club Champions: Team Gray and Team Mellor. A big highlight this season was the Road to the Roar, which crowned our eventual Olympic Gold Medalists, Team Brad Jacobs, and raised $17,000+ for our club. I would like to thank all of our hardworking volunteers for their great work this season. We can't run this club without you. In particular I want to thank our new volunteer ice crew, who helped to ensure fast turnarounds between draws by getting the sweeping, pebbling and nipping done so efficiently. Thanks also to our incredible staff of Jim, Karen, Jeff and everyone behind the bar. We're lucky to have such dedicated people working for us. A reminder that the Annual General Meeting is on June 17th at 7pm. Everyone is encouraged to attend. As most of you have heard by now, this was a particularly challenging year for us, as utility costs skyrocketed by 30%. The board will present our plan to deal with this new cost at the AGM. Only 107 days until the compressors turn back on! Doug

A Message From Marion I am climbing the CN Tower May 1st to support WWF-Canada. I am totally up for the physical and fundraising challenge! The money I have raised with the help of your generous support will make a huge difference to WWF s efforts to conserve species at risk, like polar bears, tigers, and pandas and the habitats they call home. Thank you for the amazing amount of donations I have received for supporting my challenge, my climb and our planet! Marion Board of Directors The season is now over so now you ve got plenty of time to consider sitting on our Board of Directors next season. If you are interested please contact myself or any Board member you might know to discuss the possibility. We d certainly appreciate your interest! 3 Around the Rink Happy Spring everyone! This (Tues Apr 15) is the latest I can remember seeing snow for quite some time. Who knows when the lakes will be ice free and the yachtsmen among us can get our boats in the water. KW Granite will be ice free soon though; Jason Campbell pulled the plug (turned the refrigeration plant off) last night and by Wednesday it should be soft enough to be broken up and hauled away by front end loader and dump truck. I don't know if you've heard but over the summer we are getting some upgrades to our equipment in the form of new compressors and dehumidifiers. This should make us much more energy efficient, provide more consistent ice conditions and cut down on frost. Also news to some will be the fact that we'll be up and running in early Aug to accommodate CCA Trillium camps among other activities. I had a wonderful curling season. I hope you did too. See you in August. Have a great summer. Regular league curling starts again in only 5 months. Richard Slaughter

Parkway Lincoln Friday Night Mixed Another season of the Parkway Lincoln Friday Night Mixed League has come to an end with our event finals, a jitney, and closing banquet held this past Friday. Thanks to Boston Pizza's Waterloo location we were able to enjoy Pizza and Wings at our closing at a very good discount, and they added in several gift certificates as door prizes. Thanks to Marbles Restaurant on William Street in Waterloo we were able to provide extra value on Gift Certificates for all event winners. We also had door prizes donated by Jiffy Lube/Suds Car Wash (Allan McNeil) and by The Scarf Lady (Jan Jaworsky). The winners include: Season Aggregate Winner: Playoff Event Winners: At our closing I was informed that league members had collected a total of over $400 to be donated to the KW Granite Blind Curlers to be used for their expenses in routinely (and successfully) representing our club at the Provincial and National level. Thanks! It has been another great season of curling and camaraderie, and I'm pleased to inform everyone that Parkway Lincoln has already committed to being our sponsor again next season. If purchasing a new or used vehicle is in your plans this year, please consider Parkway at 455 King Street North in Waterloo, and be sure and let them know that you are a Granite Club member and appreciate their sponsorship. Have a great summer! Bruce McConnell Men s Daytime Another successful year is behind us. We had 12 teams for both Tuesday and Thursday third events. Tuesday third event: We had 2 teams tied. As they had not played each other there was a throw off. Bob Lichti won the throw off to take first. His team included: Les Saunders, John Ledlow and Paul Carter. In second place was Roger Higgins with Bill Day, Bill Barnes and Don Amos.

Men s Daytime Continued Thursday third event: We had three teams tied for first place. So a throw off was held before the Skins Game. Tom Powell was the winner followed by Heinz Brock and last but not least Ian Anderson. With Tom were: Brian Gleiser, Norm Green, and Ted DeYoung. With Heinz were: Bob Toogood, Herb Millard and Bruce Lumsden. We had another exciting Skins game to close out the season. Four of the six sheets ended up splitting the 8 skins. For next year Paul Carter will be joining John Martin to organize Thursdays. Bill Hume & Dave Cain will be doing Tuesdays. Once this snow goes away, we should be all set for a great spring and summer. Cheers, Dave Cain Wednesday Men s Club Championship It s hard to believe but from top to bottom the WinTek Wednesday night men s club championship night became even stronger this season. A newcomer to this league was impressed with the depth. Two sophomore teams went from feeling their way to making it to the final club championship night. As mentioned before, participants from the club's Wednesday night teams have contributed to four banners (Ontario championships) for our club over the past three years plus at least one banner for another clubs. Numerous provincial appearances on top of that. Congratulations the Laurier Senior Varsity rink on the club championship and to Team Gray for a second straight aggregate championship. Following is a list of all the winners from our championship night. 6 Thursday Night Men The 2013/14 Thursday night curling was again a successful event. This year the final evening of playoffs offered some keen curling, camaraderie, and the enjoyment of pizza and prizes. In the A division final the team of Gary Crossley, Chris Pearcey, Tim Morrison and Jamie Howieson, defeated Brian Hatton, Rick Reitzel, Tim Szozda, and Dan Higginson. In the B division final, Bob Toogood substituting for the vacationing Lew Ayers, Dan Currie, Don Roth and Bruce Anderson defeated David Mather, Tam Nguyen, Martin Romboult and Patrick Schnarr. For the second event the Art Frensch team defeated Richard Slaughter for 5 th spot, Bryan Wooddisse defeated David Holt for 6 th place and bragging rights went to Bill Ralph by defeating Brad Fournier and Mark Mallet defeating Al Nichols to round out the play offs. In conclusion, it is with our heartfelt thanks to our outgoing convenor Carl Hoffman who diligently and competently managed the Thursday night curling for the past eight years. I will have big shoes to fill. Again we thank those Thursday night curlers who assisted Carl in preparation of the ice. As we leave one frustrating sport of curling to take up another frustrating sport of golf I wish everyone a safe summer and hopefully we will see you all in the fall for a great new curling season. Brian Hatton Business Ladies Our season is over. The games are all done. We enjoyed our prize night with pizza and about 92 curlers. I want to start by congratulating Team Slaughter in a hard fought game versus Team Mellor for the KW Granite Dominion Ladies Representative. In the end, Team Mellor pulled out the win. Carrie Mellor, regular curler in our league, as well as Taylor Mellor, Mary Patterson (regular spares in our league) and Lauri Infanti will be representing the KW Granite at the Dominion Zones in the new curling season. Congratulations to Connie Slaughter, Deb Steel, Deb Williams and Bev Short for winning the Thursday Business Women s overall, regular season. I want to also congratulate the following teams on winning their respective divisions: Division A Team Mellor Division C Team Salonen Division B Team Allen Division D Team Miller I would also like to recognize a few ladies for their efforts this year. To start, a big thank you to Laurene Dong, our games convener this year. She has graciously decided to stay on as Games convener for next year as well. To Cailey McCutcheon for providing valuable insight and support to Laurene as she navigated her first year as games convener, we thank you for the help and support! To Monica Vesely, the nominated Sportsmanship Award Winner for the season, we say congratulations! Many people commented on your patience with new curlers, your kindness to opponents, and your ability to make and maintain the fun factor while playing. Finally, to all of the ladies that support other teams, by agreeing to spare: without each of you, the camaraderie of curling would be lost. Thank you for stepping out to help those in need. On behalf of each player that was in need of a spare, and each team that played with a spare, we all thank you! Wishing you all a safe, happy and healthy summer! See you all in September! Pam MacCollum

Day Ladies Spring has arrived and I hope that all of you will get to tend your gardens and seed all plots. This is the time to enjoy the best of God's creations. As we've been reminded 'Spring is not the best of seasons, Cold and flu are two good reasons, Wind and rain and other sorrow, Warm today and cold tomorrow.' (author unknown) The following events ended: 1. Inter-City - K-W placed third this year with 238 points. Thanks to all participants and thanks to Jean Richardson, Barb Ready and Val Rotar for their dedication to promote this curling event. 2. Doubles Event - This event is sponsored by Wendy Williston. Winners are: 1st Place: Barb Tucker and Paddy Henry 2nd Place: Dorothy Hinschberger and Barbara Ryan 3. Davenport Catering Event - Is is sponsored by Harald Braun Winners are : 1st Place: JoAnn Vincent, Judy Stiles, Anne Patterson, Virginia Tkach 2nd Place: Sharon Stephens, Barbara Ready, Joyce Bell, Linda Oliver 4. Granite Classic - This event is sponsored by our lifetime member, Bette Eccles. The winners are: 1st Place: Edie Lowe, Carol Pollard, Elsie Millard and Paddy Henry 2nd Place: Wendy Simpson. Pat Gascho. Lynda McKillop and Sharon Kosa The closing Bonspiel was well attended, 44 curlers were in attendance and at least 36 members were present at the luncheon. Prizes were provided by Tim Horton's of Bridgeport Rd. in Waterloo. The closing banquet was well attended and 53 members enjoyed the wonderful dinner catered by Davenport Catering. Davenport Catering also supplied the lunch served earlier in the day. The ceremony was funny, relevant and absolutely entertaining. At the closing banquet, the Sandy Horton Award was presented to Lorna Allen. She is truly a deserving curler who strives to help others and helps all ladies to do their best. Congratulations!! It is my hope that all of you have a Happy Easter and enjoy the rest of the spring season. I look forward to seeing you in the fall. Don't forget the Annual Golf Day is Thurs. June 5th at Puslinch, Come out and have fun. I will close with the following spring fever humor: Four high school boys afflicted with spring fever skipped morning classes. After lunch they reported to their teacher that they had a flat tire on their way to school. Much to their relief, she smiled and said" Well, you missed a test this morning, so take seats apart from one another and take out a piece of paper." Still smiling, she waited for all four boys to sit down. Then she said, "First Question, which tire was flat?" Submitted by: W. Bauer The Granite Club thanks our sponsors:
