1 December 2009 Message from the President Seasons greetings one and all. KW Granite Club Rink in The Park 99 Seagram Drive Waterloo, Ontario N2L-3B6 Phone: (519) Fax: (519) Website: Manager: Jim Uhrig Office: Karen Lowe President: Doug Suerich Past President: Neil Miskell Sec. Treasurer: Bill Simpson VP Admin: Deb Salonen VP Curling: Kathy Ryan House & Property Lew Ayers Lady s Rep: Lynn Bebenek Men s Rep: Gary Crossley Mixed Rep: I m happy to announce that Marc Joyce has invented a new volunteer position here at the club, and agreed to fill it. Marc will be our Bonspiel Consultant, responsible for recuiting volunteers to run our various bonspiels, and providing them with any support they need to promote and run great events. The goal is not to replace our existing group of wonderful event volunteers, but rather to help them out, and make it easier for new volunteers to step in. If you have any ideas for a bonspiel, or would like some assistance, Marc is now your first point of contact. We ll see how this new role evolves over time. There was a good turnout to see Kevin Martin when he came to our club. Not sure who in Toronto thought that he could land at Pearson Airport and be on the ice here in Waterloo in 60 minutes, but he did make it eventually. Kevin actually played an end on behalf of Kathy Ryan, and managed to steal a point, but opponent James Bromiley was able to overcome this blatant cheating and won the game. Team Bromiley can now say that they have a winning record against the reigning Brier champ. The competitive curling season is underway, and already the KW Granite Club has had some great results. We have details inside on some great performances in cashspiels, the Home Hardware inter-club event, and some early playdown results. December 11-13, our club will be hosting the Regional Playdowns for the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, which is why we ve featured the Hearts logo inside our rings this season. Come on out for a free chance to watch some of the best female curlers in Ontario as they fight for a spot in the provincials. Schedules will be posted around the club. Season s Greetings

3 Bonspiel Corner 2009 Home Hardware Bonspiel Congratulations to Bryan Wooddisse and his team of Angela Cerantola, John Deutschlander and Dave McBride for winning the Cup Consolation event at this year s Home Hardware Bonspiel. Bryan would also like to extend thanks to Dave Holt, Jim Renaud and Lew Ayers who helped out as spares throughout the week. Recognition also goes out to the KW Granite teams who represented us well and made it to the event finals on Saturday November 26th: Brian Belfry (Trophy semi-finalist) John Scott (Cup semi-finalist) Ryan Sayer (Trophy Consolation finalist) Bruce McConnell (Trophy Consolation semi-finalist) Thanks to all 23 teams who participated. In a year where the overall number of teams dropped to 96, I am proud to report that the number of KW Granite teams actually increased! Please visit to see how the rest of our teams fared. Upcoming Bonspiels Jan 23: World Curling Two er Event Jan 25: Day Ladies Feb 6: Seniorfest Feb 20: Valentine s Jitney Feb 17: Lea Bauman Masters March 12-14: Detroit Exchange (at KW) March 13: Hospitaliano/Battle of the Sexes April 10: Little Rocks Please see the bonspiels section of the club website for more details: Odds and Ends I plan to use this column as a forum to recognize the achievements of our curlers at bonspiels throughout the season. If you have been to a bonspiel recently, I want to know how you did! Send your stories (both good and bad) to marc.joyce@gmail.com. Funny and/or amazing stories may get some kind of prize! Also, if you are entering a bonspiel and would like to encourage other members to participate, let me know and I will get the word out. I am looking for volunteers to sit on the organizing committee for the 2010 KW Fall Classic. Many of you have been loyal fans of this event for the past two years, so if you are interested in helping out, please get in touch with me. Monthly committee meetings will start in late January/early February.
4 Marc Joyce Bonspiel Consultant Men s Daytime Leagues Time moves on! We have already completed the first round of the Tuesday morning league. In first place was the team of Tom Powell, Dave Holt, Hans Schamp and George Heath. In second place was the team of Ed Ferguson, Bruce Lowe, Norm Green and Jim Tucker. Prizes are presented at our spring closing. New teams have been drawn for the second round on Tuesdays, and Karen has issued the schedule. New teams will be drawn on December 3 rd for the second round of the Thursday afternoon league. If you wish to make any changes see Tom Powell. Mark your calendar on Tuesday December 22 nd for the skins game ( be there by 8.30 AM ); there will be big cash winnings and lunch will be available. This skins game is for both the Tuesday and Thursday leagues and it returns the cash not paid out for the throw-offs. Friday Night Mixed Curling Our Dundee Wealth Friday Night Mixed League's first round schedule will be coming to an end at the end of this month and we will start round 2 on January 8, After the games on December 18th, all teams will be re-slotted within our four events based on the first round results for competitive balance. If any teams already know a Friday where they would like to have their bye in January, let me know and we'll try to accommodate it. So far it appears like Team Leitch is the overall league juggernaut this year, going the first 6 games without a loss. On behalf of our league sponsor (Michael Collins of Dundee Wealth) we want to wish everyone all the best for the coming holiday season and for AROUND THE RINK Hi Everyone. It s great to see everyone again this season. Just a few little blurbs this month. I d like to thank Carl Hoffman for helping me burn, flood, and prepare the ice for our Nov. flood. I would like to thank all the people for helping on the ice so far this year, whether it be sweeping, mopping, or nipping. It means a lot to the groups that are going on the ice on time. Just a little note when mopping, when you're finished at the end just pick it up, do not shake it. Then either hang it up or stand it up with the mop side down, to keep it a cool as possible. If you shake it or keep it off, the small tuffs of debris seem to find their way back on to the ice. Check and clean the inside of your grippers.
5 I know that some of you may get new sweaters for curling for Xmas. Make sure that they are washed first before you wear them on the ice. New sweaters, especially fleece, will drop little tufts of material on the ice and could cause the rocks to pick. See you Around the Rink and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. From your friendly neighbourhood Ice Tech Sweeper McBroom BUSINESS LADIES LEAGUE Saturday November 7, 2009 the Business Ladies league hosted 16 teams at our annual Bonspiel.
