1 December 2008 Message from the Prez KW Granite Club Rink in The Park 99 Seagram Drive Waterloo, Ontario N2L-3B6 Phone: (519) Fax: (519) Website: Manager: Jim Uhrig Office: Karen Lowe President: Neil Miskell Past President: Neil Bailey Sec. Treasurer: Bill Simpson VP Admin: Deb Salonen VP Curling: Kathy Ryan House & Property Lew Ayers Lady s Rep: Pat Nippell Men s Rep: Doug Suerich Mixed Rep: Dave Zenger I know both Neil Bailey & Gary Crossley have extended their thanks to all the volunteers for their great contributions at the recent Masters Grand Slam, so I will just piggy back on their comments and thank Neil and Gary for their leadership. I am extremely proud of the way our Club continuously steps up and runs major events with apparent ease. That is why we are becoming known as the go to club for big time curling spectacles. I have included in this issue a letter from Insight Sports and their Executive expressing their thanks and gratitude for a job well done. As we are getting close to Christmas, now might be a good time to consider our draw tickets for stocking stuffers. They will be distributed shortly. With a great selection of prizes this year they will be a welcome addition to any stocking: 42 Plasma TV & Entertainment Unit His & Hers Watches Gas Barbeque Peter Etril Snyder Curling Print Weekend Getaway The Little Rock/Junior Development Program The Little Rock/Junior Development Program (LRJDP) is off to a very active season for 2008/09. Ben Shane recently guided his team to the final in the Junior zones; losing 7-6 in an extra end. Well done! Our eight curlers who will represent the City of Kitchener in Switzerland for the International Children s Games have been receiving expert instruction from this year s coaching team and will be taking some extra practice time as well as game experience with inter-club exchanges over the next 2 months. Both teams are going to Burlington for a December 13 Bonspiel and we wish them well. Thanks to Brian Belfry for his recent column on the groups activities. We will be on air with CKNX radio over the Christmas break, to talk about the trip. With many of our Bantam and Junior curlers involved in the High School curling leagues, we will be pursuing the expansion of the program by adding these young people to our Sunday group. Martin Rombout Convenor - Junior Program

5 November 17, 2008 Neil Bailey & Gary Crossley Co-Chairs 2008 Masters of Curling c/o Kitchener-Waterloo Granite Club 99 Seagram Drive Waterloo, ON N2L 3B6 Dear Neil & Gary: On behalf of the World Curling Players Association, Insight Sports, CBC and Capital One, I want to congratulate you, your committee and the truly remarkable volunteers for making the 2008 Masters of Curling one of the best Capital One Grand Slams ever. It was an honour for Pierre, Maggie, Mark, Rob, Eric, Gerry and I to work alongside you on this prestigious event. Your attention to detail and the smiles on everyone s faces as they put in long days was truly heartwarming. The Kitchener-Waterloo Granite Club should be proud of all that you accomplished I know we certainly are! The sport of curling is in great hands at the local level if your club is any indication of the community support across the country. When Waterloo was originally considered as a possible host for one of the Capital One Grand Slam events, all we heard from the players, the WCPA and ice technicians was that we would be spoiled by the efficiency and unparalleled organization of the Granite Club. Having now experienced your hospitality and expertise, add me to the list of your fan club! I thank you for your tireless efforts, dedication and support for the great game of curling. We could not have asked for a better start to the season. Congratulations again to all of you. We look forward to returning again in the near future. Sincerely, Wendy Kane Executive Director Capital One Grand Slam of Curling Cc: Kevin Albrecht, Insight Sports Ltd Ian Cunningham, Capital One Canada Pierre Charette, World Curling Players Association Maggie Hermant, Mark Shurek, Rob Cranston, Eric Michalko, Gerry Geurts, CO-GSOC 184 Pearl Street, Suite 320, Toronto, ON M5H 1L5
