Gary & his team have worked hard to bring you the best possible ice this season. He is quite pleased with the operation of the new condenser, the ice cools faster & we are using less water in the process. We are continuing to work on the drip problems over the ice. We have insulated the ice area to avoid air leaks and thus letting in moisture from the outside. The dehumidifiers will be working at maximum to keep the air dry in the upper areas of the ceiling. This is a trial and error process and if it persists we will continue to take professional advice and work towards eliminating the drips. Registration has shown we have 39 new adults joining the club and 34 LTC members. It is good that people continue to call PCC when they are interested in curling. We still have room for a few more new curlers with LTC if you know anyone interested. We are pleased with the membership numbers coming in and although several have not registered yet, we expect to meet our goal of 500 members before the month is done. Kim MacDonald has done a tremendous job this past summer filling the StoneHouse Hall with 10 weddings since July 7. This has resulted in a large increase in our bar revenue over last year so we start the season with some positive cash flow. CurlON has incorporated the 5-rock free guard zone rule for all sanctioned competitions. CurlON encourages facilities that host competitive leagues and bonspiels to adopt the 5-rock free guard zone to better acclimate competitors to the new universally accepted free guard zone structure. In consultation with the Section heads who were undecided as to how to proceed, the Board of Directors has voted to accept CurlON s recommendation to the new rule. So effective for this curling season the 5-rock free guard zone rule will be standard for all league play. Our advertising department headed up by Dave Barr and his team of Doris Nickson and Dave Levecque have done a fantastic job selling advertising space for the club. Please note the sponsors and patronize their businesses if you can. If you do, please let them know you are a club member and saw their sign. 2 SUNDAY TAG Sunday Tag is starting this year on October 14. The great thing about this league is the teams are made up randomly every week. In doing this you get to play with different people and if you are unable to make it you don't need to find a spare. When you arrive for Tag you are given a name tag to put on the table so the teams can be made. We get on the ice at 1:30pm so you need to be in the upper lounge by 1:15pm to put your name tag in for a team. We aim for an eight end game and fun to be had by all. When we come off the ice everyone comes in for drinks, snacks, and for a chance to socialize and meet new people. Any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. (705) or katelinpetlover@gmail.com Hope to see everyone there! Katelin Langford LADIES SECTION JUNIORS. Hello junior curlers and welcome to the 2018/19 curling season. This year the junior program will begin on Sunday, October 14 & will run every Sunday from 10am to 12:30pm. There are lessons & practice time from 10am to 11am & then we make up teams for a 6-end game from 11am to 12:30pm. If you have friends or kids or grandkids that would like to try doing some curling, bring them with you on Sundays. All they need is some warm clothing & a good clean pair of indoor runners. We had time to socialize and welcome back the ladies for the season, past members who are still an important part of our section and ladies who are new to our section (we were so happy to meet you!!) It is going to be a great season of curling, fun and friendships. Good curling to all! Anne Beckett-MacNeill MEN S SECTION Welcome back everyone. We start this year with the Monday Men s draw full and 19 teams in the Tuesday draw. We wish luck to the Hogan team at the Travellers Playdown October 19. They won the right to represent PCC by winning the club championship last season. We have a new bonspiel in the Men s schedule this year. On December 8 we will host the Doyle Plumbing Heating and Curling Bonspiel with places for 20 teams in the two draw format. Look for the sign-up sheet to be posted soon. Tim Orpwood FRIDAY AFTERNOON MIXED We begin our curling season on Friday, October 12. This year we will be easing gently into the season with a FUN Afternoon of 6-end curling. There is a sign-up sheet posted on the FAM bulletin board near the kitchen. We are excited to have 21 teams registered this year and we are busy working on the schedule which will be posted on the club web site shortly. Please note our new start times of 1:45 and 4:00pm. The Bell Rule remains in effect to encourage pace of play and new this year will be the 5-Rock Rule. Mark your calendars now for the RBC Harris-Lowe Wealth Management Sr. Mixed Bonspiel on Saturday, November 3. Please consider entering a team, the flyer is posted on the club web site. Our festive Christmas Dinner will be held on Friday, December 21; this is a not to miss event and is subsidized through your FAM section fee. 3 SENIOR MEN S SECTION Wow!! What happened to September?? I was at the Club the morning of October 4, and Gary was getting the ice ready for the first practice session in the afternoon. Everything looked great. I love this time of year when curling and golf overlap. It is the best! Speaking of golf, Bob Ford organized another Super Senior s Golf Classic on June 4 at Heron Landing. It was a little windy and cool but otherwise it was a great day. 44 members and friends participated. The team of Tom Cushing, Gary Fenn, Gary Booth and Jim Byrnes were the winners with a score of 8 under 54. The only woman in the field, our BFF Nancy Henry, won the closest to the pin on #6. Gary Booth won closest to the pin on #12. And apparently Jim Byrnes made 4 putts of 30 or more to help these guys to the win. Bob would like to thank the folks at Heron Landing for their help in putting this tournament together and for the two 18 hole golf passes they provided as prizes. On September 25, the Senior Men s Section was front and center at the Club s Open House to cut the ribbon on the new handicap accessible doors at the front of the building. Alec Denys and Carl Bax took part in the ceremony with President Bruce Thompson and city councillor Lesley Parnell. It really is a credit to everyone who 1 st Annual Sticks, Stones & helped to make this project a reality. Wheels Bonspiel Pauline Orpwood Sat Dec 8 and Sun Dec 9 did an excellent job of publicizing the event. We got great media coverage from CHEX TV and the Examiner. It was great to hear that there will be a On Ice Volunteers Needed wheelchair curling bonspiel held in early December. The Club has Talk to Alec Denys or Carl Bax joined few others in the Province capable of hosting such an event. The Senior Men s Executive has decided to implement the 5 Rock Rule for all of its in house and open events this year. Thank you to the Men s, Junior s Given all of the recent chatter at the Grand Slam event in Chatham & Sunday Tag leagues for giving about how this rule change is the way of the future, we decided to ice time for this new wheelchair get on with it. We aren t sure that it will have all that much impact bonspiel. on our games, but we will see. Bob McLaughlin has another great season of bonspiels lined up. Our first event will be the M & M Funspiel on October 24. Dave Levesque and Barry Parsons will be welcoming our first group of student curlers from Westmount Public School this coming Friday, October 12. This is such a great program. The kids are so enthusiastic and have such a good time. Dave and Barry could use a few more volunteers and you don t have to be a member of the Section to get in on the fun. Let the games begin. 4 BUSINESS WOMEN The Business Women are excited to start the 2018/2019 season. We have had a successful registration with 44 members (many new ladies) this year. We are still recruiting and would be thrilled to have 48 on the ice for our Monday start. The executive and social committee are always working to make the year an enjoyable one for all. During the season we plan many social events: the first will be opening night, October 15 at 7:30pm with snacks, a fun team meet n greet and finish with our first curling game. We have decided to stay in line with the curling world and will be implementing the 5-Rock Rule. This will be interesting to see how it affects the game. The Medical Centre Pharmacy has graciously offered to be our sponsor again this year. Thank you to the Medical Centre Pharmacy for their generous sponsorship. We wish our club members a fun filled curling season. Brenda Hill FRIDAY EVENING MIXED It s hard to believe it is already Curling Season! Your executive has been hard at work, getting ready for a great season. At time of writing, our league has 29.5 teams registered, with many new faces! We are still looking for a few people to fill out some teams. If you know someone that may be interested in curling on Friday nights, please get them to contact us. As our league is over-subscribed, we will be utilizing Thursday night games in order to avoid byes. Teams can try to arrange another time with the ice maker for open ice. As long as games are played before the end of a draw they don't have to be played on the Thursday. We are once again running our weekly 50/50 draw and will be collecting over the first three weeks. Our annual Potluck and Curling event is on Sunday, October 28. There will be a sign-up sheet posted on our bulletin board at the club. We look forward to seeing you on the ice next week! Kelli, Souen, Matt, Carolyn, Linda & Marie LEARN TO CURL The Learn To Curl Program is excited to begin its seventh season at the Peterborough Curling Club. Our membership has over 80 graduates of this great program spread throughout our leagues. The class this year is almost full at the time of this writing and we expect another group of enthusiastic new curlers to mold to PCCers. This program could not have survived without the dedication of both past and present instructors and we want to thank everyone who has contributed to the LTC program in this role. We are always looking to increase our pool of instructors so if you are interested in becoming an instructor please contact Kevin Casselman at or kevindcasselman@gmail.com. We encourage our LTCers to sign up to spare after the instruction portion of the class, so keep them in mind later in the year when you are looking for an extra player. Both clinics will be in the morning & are free to members. PCC has been awarded the 2022 Ontario Wheelchair Curling Championship.
