1 Official Newsletter of the Canadian Shuffleboard Congress Volume 27 Issue 1 / February 2012 Canadian Shuffleboard Website: CONGRESS NEWS Hello to everyone across Canada. I hope that everyone had a very joyous holiday season and are having a prosperous new year. Let me begin by saying thank you to everyone involved with the BCSA for an outstanding job in hosting the Canadian Championships in October. The facility was first class, and the boards were excellent. I heard nothing but compliments from all the players. It takes a dedicated effort from a lot of people to make this event a success and all members of BCSA can pat themselves on the back for hosting a great tournament. Preparations are under way in Victoria for this year's Championships and I wish VISA every success with their plans. I am confident they will do the same outstanding job that everyone does with this event. All charters are well into their league play this year. I hope that everyone is having a successful year. As has been the case for the last couple of years, we have some charters that are thriving and others that are struggling with numbers of players. As I have stressed in the past, it is my hope that we are doing all that we can to recruit new players. Best of luck to all the hosting charters with these events. I look forward to seeing everyone. Jamie McCrimmon, Canadian Congress President VANCOUVER ISLAND Host of the 2012 Canadian Championships!! We were back to normal in November and hosted our 11th Annual Memorial Tournament. We had a great turn out at this year s event. We had 39 entries (13 teams). 3 The Thursday and Saturday leagues are halfway through the season. We are looking forward to our Spring league starting May 8th. Our BC Open will be July 6 8. Our Provincial Playdowns will be August 31 to September 3.Hope to see you all in Calgary the May long weekend. If not, hope to see you in Victoria in October. Mike Billings, BCSA President SOUTHERN ALBERTA SASA participated in the Canadian Championships that were held in Vancouver last October and had a wonderful time. Vancouver, you all did a very good job in hosting and entertaining the players and guests. SASA reps will be looking forward to going to the Canadians this year in Victoria. We wish them the best of luck in their planning and hosting this event! Congratulations to our SASA Men s Doubles- Rick Litman and Gary Langraf for taking 3rd at the 2011 Canadian Championships Our league continues to play every Wednesday evening however we are down to 4 teams this year. We held a tournament on January 14 (Memorial Tournament) and February 4 which were well attended. We are having a meeting soon to determine what changes may be needed to encourage more players to join as well as possibly re-structuring the current format. Change is never easy nor well accepted by many but sometimes necessary to build the sport. Take care and we look forward to seeing many of you at the Alberta Open this year right here in Calgary! Plans are well underway for an exciting and fun-filled weekend. SASKATCHEWAN Hello everyone from the Saskatchewan Shuffleboard Association. First and foremost I would like to say thanks to Lorraine and her many volunteers for a job well done in Burnaby. Everyone from Saskatchewan who attended was impressed with a very well put together week of competition and fun. Our league is now past the halfway point with 9 teams this year. Our All Star team has been chosen for Feb. 18 th at the Barley Mill Brew Pub representing the east are Vern Elliott, Bill Parrell, Charlene Lucas, Liz Patrick, Crystal Huzina and Marlowe Halvorson vs. the west Rod Betker, Dave Loughren, Larry Swayn, Ronda Sentes, Robyn White and Mike Johnson it will be a fun afternoon of competition and drinks. We have had 2 tourneys this year, the Hungarian Open and the Eagles Open both being great days of competition and fun. Charlene and her team put together and raffled off a Valentines basket which raised an amazing $ at the Eagles Open tourney, a huge thanks to her team for putting this together and really pushing those ticket sales. We also have the Barley Mill Open coming up in March. This year the S.S.A. will be holding their provincials in the spring with Men s and Ladies Doubles on May 5 th, Men s and Ladies Singles on May 6 th and the Mixed Doubles on the following weekend May 12 th. We are hoping this creates more interest and a larger turnout to our provincial championships which has declining numbers in the past years. We hope to see our friends from other charters at our annual Sask Open on the August long weekend starting out with a fun night on the Thursday and as usual we will be paying a free entry to 1 event for every out of town player that attends. Vernon Maguire SASA President 3

4 In closing, I would like to say good luck to all other charter members in their Playdowns. We look forward to seeing you all at the Alberta Open, the Victoria Open, the Canadian Open in Winnipeg, the Sask. Open and the Canadian Championships in Victoria. Marlowe Halvorson, President Hello from Manitoba MANITOBA Congratulations to BCSA for a great Canadian championship. Your dedicated team helped run a very successful tournament. Things have slowed down in Manitoba. We only have 12 teams in league play however everyone is having a great time trying to get their wins. We moved our Manitoba Open to November last year, thinking it would help for a better attendance once everyone was back in the swing of playing however our attendance was still low. I m sure we should have a great representation this year when we host the Canadian Open and we are looking forward to welcoming our out of town guests. For those that will be coming, please remember to book your room at the Norwood Hotel with the information that is provided on the website. Our Valentine Mixed tournament will be on February 11 th and the Division tournaments on February 12, 2012 held at Rockwood ANAF #303. These tournaments are open to anyone. Our Manitoba Championships will be held on April 20, 21, 22, There are a large number of players hoping to win to represent Manitoba at the Championships in Victoria. Good luck to everyone with their season and we look forward to seeing many of you on the July long weekend. Hello from Ontario ONTARIO What a mild winter we are having here (so far)! We hope everyone had a wonderful Xmas and we wish everyone a healthy and very happy 2012! On behalf of the OSA Executive and all its members we would like to thank the British Columbia Shuffleboard Association (BCSA) for an excellent 2011 Canadian Championship. What a beautiful venue. The playroom was massive, colorful and such a great view! Thanks to everyone for all your hard work and hospitality! Congratulations to all the winners of the 2011 CSC Championships and also to the 2011 Hall of Fame Inductees. It s such a pleasure to so many deserving players being recognized each year. Here in southern Ontario league play in all three districts is well under way. The OSA has already held seven of the 18 tournaments scheduled for 2011/2012. October 15 Mixed Doubles / Milton: Brenda Brown and Chris Lesperance October 22 Draw for Partners / Fonthill: Scott Burwell and Scott Kenyan November 12 Draw for Partners / Kitchener: Randy Homanchuk and Rico Beaulieu November 19 Draw For Partners/ Milton: Darlene Perusello and Roy Stuart November 19 Draw for Partners / Fonthill: John Crites and Roger Lacourse January 14 Draw For Partners / Fonthill: Claude Crites and Gary Dixon January 21 Draw For Partners / Milton: Randy Homanchuk and Rico Beaulieu Check out the OSA website for updates and photos of all the winners and some of our other shenanigans! Faye Mitchell, President 4

5 Niagara Regional Shuffleboard League has sixty players in their league this year. Milton has twenty three and Kitchener has seventy nine. We have several fundraisers lined up. This year Bonnie Redmond organized a Bowl-A-Thon and what a great time that was. It was something different and quite a challenge to our aging bodies but a great way to raise money by pledges! We have several raffles planned and our annual dance coming up in September so a busy season ahead of us. It sounds like VISA has everything organized and we wish them good luck with their final preparations for the 2012 Championships. Look forward to seeing everyone once again. All the best to everyone and Happy Shuffling! Theresa Lynk Sec / Treas OSA EASTERN ONTARIO Hi from Eastern Ontario Looking forward to the 2012 Canadians in Victoria. We should be able to send a full team this year. We had a tourney on February 4 th with 10 teams. We have another tourney scheduled for February 25th. Our playdowns will be held in May. We hope everyone is having a great winter and looking forward to seeing all our shuffling friends in October. Jim Baker, EOSA President. ALBERTA No submission. 5
