The Pride s win over #20 Towson improved its record to 6-1 in its last seven games against nationally ranked teams. Senior forward Michael Todd was named the CAA Player of the Week after scoring two goals in Friday s 4-3 doubleovertime win over Towson, including the game-winner in the second overtime. He now has 10 goals this season, which leads the CAA and makes him the first 10-goal scorer at Hofstra since 2000 (Aboubacar Camara). Junior midfielder Constantinos Christoudias became the first Hofstra player in five years to record a hat trick when he tallied three goals in the Pride s 5-0 win over Delaware Oct. 2. So far this season, Hofstra is a undefeated when senior forward Michael Todd scores a goal (7-0-1), and winless (0-3-1) when he doesn t. Seven of senior forward Michael s Todd s 10 goals this season have come in the first 20 minutes. Two others have been golden goals in the second overtime (vs. Marist on Sept. 10 and vs. Towson on Oct. 9). Freshman back Corey Gudmundson scored his first career goal with 5:29 left in the game to start the Pride s comeback in its 4-3 win over #20 Towson on Friday. Senior midfielder Matthew Telling was named the team s 2005 captain during preseason. Michael Todd, Jason Gates, Gary Flood and Matthias Gumbrecht were named assistant captains. Five of the last six Hofstra-Towson games have featured a tying or a winning goal in the final 2:30 of regulation. This year s game featured a tying goal from senior midfielder Matthew Telling with only 16 seconds to play. Hofstra closed out last season with a six-game win streak before falling in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to #7 Maryland, Five of those six wins came against nationally-ranked teams, including a 2-1 win over #21 Seton Hall in the first round of the 2004 NCAA Tournament. 2 Last Week Recap: Hofstra had a couple of dramatic overtime games at Hofstra Soccer Stadium, defeating #20 Towson 4-3 in double overtime on Friday and tying George Mason 0-0 on Sunday. In the Towson game, the Pride trailed 3-1 with six minutes to go, but came back for an improbable victory. Freshman back Corey Gudmundson (Dallas, TX) started the rally when he headed in a corner kick from junior midfielder Constantinos Christoudias (Nicosia, Cyprus) with 5:29 to play. Hofstra kept the pressure on, and evened the score with just 16 seconds remaining as senior midfielder Matthew Telling (Rotherham, England) headed in another corner kick, which was taken by Chris Cox (Nottingham, England). In the second overtime, the Pride completed the comeback when senior forward Michael Todd (Cleveland, England) knocked in the rebound off a Christoudias shot. Towson took a 2-1 lead into halftime and stretched the lead to 3-1 early in the second half. However, Hofstra outshot the Tigers 21-4 after intermission (31-12 for the game) as Towson sat back and tried to protect its lead. The Pride continued to control play for most of the George Mason game on Sunday, outshooting the Patriots 16-5 in regulation but failing to find the back of the net. Christoudias hit the crossbar in the first minute of the game, and Todd hit the post twice from sharp angles. In the second overtime, George Mason mounted their first serious challenges and nearly won the game twice, but senior midfielder Jason Gates (Fort Collins, CO) and Christoudias each saved balls off the goal line within 30 seconds of each other. Hofstra finished the game with a 17-7 edge in shots, while Matthias Gumbrecht (Hemhofen, Germany) went the distance to get his second shutout of the season. Hofstra vs. Ranked Teams: The Pride s 4-3 doubleovertime win over Towson on Friday continued a remarkable recent stretch of success in games against nationally ranked teams. Hofstra is now 6-1 in its last seven games against ranked opponents, including all four of its postseason wins from a year ago (three in the CAA Tournament and one in the NCAA Tournament). The stretch started with a 2-1 win over James Madison (ranked 15 th ) in the 2004 regular season and continued with postseason wins over UNC Wilmington, Virginia Commonwealth, Old Dominion and Seton Hall. The only loss was an NCAA second round defeat to #7 Maryland. Hofstra will get another chance to continue that success when it travels to Old Dominion (ranked #3 in the NSCAA poll from Oct. 4) on Sunday. Another Wild Hofstra-Towson Game: The Pride had a remarkable comeback in its 4-3 win over Towson on Friday, rallying from a 3-1 deficit with under six minutes to play to tie the score with 16 seconds left on a goal from Matthew Telling (Rotherham, England). What is truly remarkable, though, is that a wild finish has been the norm in the Hofstra-Towson series in recent seasons. In five of the last six meetings between the schools, there has been a tying or a winning goal in the final 2:30 of regulation. In 2000, Towson tied the score with 1:02 to play and won in overtime. In 2001, Towson tied the score with just over two minutes remaining, but Hofstra came rebounded to win in overtime. In 2002, Towson trailed 1-0 with nine minutes to go, but came back with two goals, including the gamewinner with less than two minutes to play. In 2003, Hofstra trailed 2-0 with five minutes to go, but rallied to tie the score with less than two minutes left in the 2-2 draw. Todd Named CAA Player of the Week: Senior forward Michael Todd (Cleveland, England) was named the CAA Player of the Week for the second time this season on Monday, after scoring two goals in the win over Towson. Todd has picked up where he left off last year, when he earned the Most Outstanding Player Award at the CAA Tournament and scored the game-winning goal in the Pride s 2-1 win over Seton Hall in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. This year, Todd has already become the first 10-goal scorer at Hofstra since Aboubacar Camara had 10 goals during the 2000 season. He currently has 10 goals in 12 games, on a pace to score 16 over the course of a 20-game season (assuming 19 regular season games and one playoff game). The school record is 18 goals, which is held by Ed Gaffney (1968). Todd Joins 25-Goal Club: Senior forward Michael Todd scored his 25 th career goal when he tallied the game-winner in the second overtime against Towson. He became just the fifth player in Hofstra history to reach the 25-goal mark for a career. Stuart Duffin ( ) holds the school record with 50 goals, while Zak Wright ( ) is second with 42. Todd now has 25 goals in his career, while Hughroy Daley ( ) also reached the 20-goal mark with 21 career goals. A Quick Striker: Senior forward Michael Todd (Cleveland, England) has made a living this season helping the Pride jump out to quick leads. Of his eight goals this season, six have given a Hofstra a 1-0 lead in the first half, five of which have come in the first 15 minutes of the game. In addition, he scored two goals in the first 15 minutes against Delaware on Sunday, scoring both of them in a span of 57 seconds. The only exception to the rule this season was his game-winning header in the second overtime of a 3-2 win over Marist. 3 Christoudias Tallies Hat Trick: Junior midfielder Constantinos Christoudias (Nicosia, Cyrpus) tallied three goals in the Pride s 5-0 win over Delaware at Hofstra Soccer Stadium on Sunday. He became the first Hofstra player to record a hat trick since Aboubacar Camara accomplished the feat in a 4-0 win over Iona back on Oct. 18, He tallied his first two goals just 2:18 apart in the first half from almost the exact same spot of the field (six yards out in front of the left post). He then capped off the three-goal effort with a 12-yard blast 17:41 into the second half to close out the scoring. It was also the second time this season that Christoudias has come through with an offensive explosion. He also had a five-point game in a 3-2 double-overtime win over Marist in the Pride s home opener back on Sept. 10. Hofstra Gets Rare Easy Win: The Hofstra Men s Soccer team has gone through a stretch in which almost every single regular season game has been a close one. The Pride s 3-1 win over Loyola on Saturday, Sept. 24 ended a stretch of 14 straight games in which the margin was one goal or tied with one minute to play (the Pride did have a 2-0 win over Drexel last season when it scored its second goal with 30 seconds to play). However, Hofstra really got a chance to relax down the stretch in its 5-0 win over Delaware on Oct. 2. It was the most goals scored and the largest margin of victory for Hofstra since an 8-0 win over Towson back in 1998, and the most in a conference game since 1984 (a 5-0 win over Bucknell). This week was back to normal, though, as both Hofstra games went to overtime. Give The Post An Assist: They usually say that the post is a goalie s best friend, but the Pride actually scored two goals in a span of 57 seconds against Delaware on Oct. 2 after hitting the post on the first try. On the first goal, senior midfielder Matthew Telling (Rotherham, England) played a through ball to senior forward Michael Todd (Cleveland, England) for a breakaway. Todd s first attempt beat the dive of Delaware goalkeeper Taylor Thames, but hit the left post and bounced straight back into the field of play. With Thames out of the play, though, Todd was able to beat everyone to the loose ball and put it in the empty net with a diving header. Just 57 seconds later Todd scored again after sophomore midfielder Chris Cox (Nottingham, England) hit the left post on a shot from just inside the left edge of the penalty area. The ball bounced across the net outside the right post, where sophomore midfielder Adrian Papaluca (Winston Hills, Australia) took a hard, low shot. Todd, though, was able to stick his cleat out and re-direct the shot into the net from three yards to put the Pride ahead 2-0. A Gud Addition: Hofstra returned a veteran nucleus this season, heading into the year with a roster that included 10 regular starters from last fall. The one position that it needed to fill was in the defensive backfield, which Gerd Schuster left vacated after earning a 2004 CAA All-Rookie team selection. Freshman Corey Gudmundson (Dallas, TX), though, has stepped into that position and has performed exceptionally well, starting all 12 games for the Pride. He came up big in Hofstra s 4-3 double-overtime win over Towson on Friday, heading in a corner kick with 5:29 to play to start the Pride s comeback from a 3-1 deficit. He also spent much of the game marking Towson s leading scorer (Sebastian Haensel) and held him without a point. Lending Some Assistance: Senior midfielder and team captain Matthew Telling (Rotherham, England) has been a mainstay in the Pride s central midfield for the last four years, where his skill and creativity has been a vital part of the team s offensive attack. This year, though, he has taken his performance to another level. Telling assisted on the first goal of the game in the Pride s 5-0 win over Delaware on Oct. 2, giving him his fifth assist through the first 10 games. That five assist total already sets a new career high for Telling, who s previous high was four assists last fall. He also scored a memorable goal when he headed in a corner kick with 16 seconds left in regulation to tie the score and help give Hofstra a 4-3, double-overtime win over Towson on Friday. Flood Warning: One of the keys to Hofstra s success this season is junior center back Gary Flood, who has been a mainstay in the Pride s defensive unit since joining the program. Flood didn t miss a single minute of playing time in his first 26 games of his career before finally subbing out in the final 10 minutes his 27 th career start. He played every minute of the first nine games for the Pride this year, before finally checking out with seven minutes to go in the Pride s 5-0 win over Delaware on Oct. 2. Road, Sweet Road: Hofstra s 1-0 overtime loss at Drexel on Sept. 30 was a bit of a rarity. Dating back to last year, the Pride is 8-3 in its last 11 road contests, including three postseason wins over nationally ranked teams (at UNC Wilmington, at Virginia Commonwealth, at Seton Hall). The only other losses in the last 11 road games were at Maryland in the second round of the NCAA Tournament and a 1-0 defeat at Columbia back on Sept. 4. Papaluca Has Memorable Debut: Sophomore midfielder Adrian Papaluca (Winston Hills, Australia) played his first college season at Division II Southampton last year. However, Southampton closed its doors at the end of the academic year, and Papaluca transferred to Hofstra. He made his first game in a Pride uniform a memorable one, as he tallied the game-winning goal with 2:15 left in a 2-1 win over Stony Brook on Sept. 1, blasting a shot from 18 yards out into the upper-left corner Revisited: Hofstra closed out the 2004 campaign with a memorable run that brought the program to unprecedented heights. With two games left in the regular season, the Pride stood at in conference play and needed to win both of its final games to qualify for the CAA Tournament. It achieved that goal by defeating #15 James Madison 2-1 and then winning a pressure-packed game at Drexel 2-0 in the regular season finale. Once it made it to the postseason, the Pride played with a renewed sense of life, going on the road to defeat #25 North Carolina-Wilmington 2-0 in the first round of the CAA Tournament, then upsetting top-seeded VCU 1-0 in the semifinals. That set up a championship match-up with Old Dominion, and a first-half goal from Michael Todd held up as the difference in the Pride s 1-0 victory. Hofstra then kept its run going with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Seton Hall in the opening round, before its six-game win streak was snapped in a second-round loss at Maryland. Those six straight wins included a remarkable five against nationally ranked teams (one at home, one at a neutral site, and three on the road).
