1 THE LARIAT IN THIS ISSUE: Senior Spotlights - pgs. 3-5 Vocal Contests - p. 6 Valentine s Day - p. 7 Shippy wrestles at state tournament - p. 8 GBB and BBB - pgs. 9 and 10 Volume 80, Issue 2 Colome High School - Box 367, Colome, SD February 25, 2019 Voters do not pass school bond measure On Feb. 5, voters in the Colome Consolidated School District went to the polls to decide on a proposed $4.95 million bond measure. If passed, the measure would have funded the construction of a 22,000 sq. ft. building primarily located in the northwest corner of the current campus. The measure required 60% of voters to approve the measure, but it only received 50.4%. Only 36.7% of registered voters showed up to the polls to cast a ballot. When the numbers are broken down for voters, 151 individuals in Colome supported the measure while 87 voted against it. In Wood, 66 voted against and 6 were in favor. In Witten, there were 9 yes votes and 8 no votes. With the recent fail of the first vote, the school board will consider adjustments to the plan and may put the measure to a second vote. Construction of the current high school building began in This included the front half of the building (the office, English room, boys and girls bathrooms, student services, the home ec room, superintendent s and business manager s offices, the art room, and teacher s room). As enrollment grew, there was need for more room in the school. A second bond issue was passed, and in 1924 an addition was built to accommodate the elementary students and to give more space for the 7-12 students. This addition included a basketball court in the basement; this space is now the math room and the Above is the original blueprint for the proposed construction project. For a better view of this plan, visit the school website at colome.k12.sd.us green room. In the high school main hallway, you can see where the original part connects with the addition. Since the time of construction, the rooms and hallways have been remodeled to enhance the structure; however, several issues remain. One of the biggest concerns with the current building is that it is not ADA-compliant. This refers to the Americans with Disabilities Act which prohibits discrimination based on disabilities. Making renovations to the current building for handicap accessibility was discussed; however, the cost was $6.8 million for the renovations and also an addition to meet the district s needs. An additional concern is the constant maintenance that is required for a building which is 100 years old. Another issue with the current campus is security. Even though the three main buildings are locked during the day, students need to move from building to building. This creates a lack of constant security which would be provided in the new plan. Entrance from the outside would be restricted to the new main entrance. The school board and the building committee will be looking at possible changes to the current proposal. They will then decide whether or not to take the measure back to the people for another vote. The next meeting for the building committee is on Feb. 26.

This year CHS students celebrated the holiday in several ways. The NHS sold candygrams for $1 each. Students filled out a note that was delivered by NHS members with a selected candy bar on Valentine s Day. The Student Council sponsored Silence is Golden for 9-12 students.the boys wore hearts on Feb. 13. If a boy talked to a girl, he had to give her his paper heart.
