1 EDDY COUNTY 4-H GREEN SCENE April 2015 EDDY COUNTY STAFF Allison Leimer, 4-H Agent Woods Houghton Ag Agent Robin Kincaid Admin. Assistant Robyne Angelovic Admin. Assistant 1304 W. Stevens Carlsbad, NM Phone: Fax: Toll Free: New Mexico State University is an equal opportunity employer. All programs are available to everyone regardless of race, color, religion, sex, age, handicap, or national origin. Eddy County Government, NMSU, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture cooperating to put knowledge to work. Hello Eddy County! Allison s Alley Spring is finally here! Although I think its been getting a little too warm for me this early in the year! Spring also brings the beginning of fair season, so I hope you are all getting prepared! At Home Ec School, one of the community service projects was to make dog leashes and dog toys for the local animal shelters. If anyone has any fabric that you do not plan on using for anything, bring it to the Extension Office! Even a fabric you may think is ugly can be used in the dog leashes and toys and they will still turn out pretty great! I am going to start asking that you RSVP to workshops/programs that the Extension Office is organizing. Quite a few times we have arrived prepared to have a great workshop, only to have nobody show up or to have a couple members show up. If less than 5 members RSVP to a workshop or program, I will be cancelling it. However, no RSVP s are needed for the Cloverbud Crew group! If there are any parents who would like to be project leaders, please give me a call! If you have any ideas on workshops or projects you would like to see put on, please let me know! Strong people don t put others down, they lift them up. ~Michael P. Watson

7 County/District Contests County/District Contests are a way for 4-H members to showcase and compete in an area(s) of their choice! All of the members usually have a ton of fun preparing and competing in the contests. The contests include: Air Rifle, Archery. Clothing Revue, Consumer Decision Making, Crops Judging, Entomology Novice and Junior, Favorite Food Show, Home Economics Bowl, Home Economics Skill-a-thon, Horse Bowl, Horse Judging, Horticulture, Land Judging, Livestock Judging, Livestock Skill-athon, Meats Identification, Parliamentary Procedure, Poetry, Presentations Agriculture, Engineering, General, Livestock, Clothing, Foods and General Home Economics, Public Speaking, Rifle, Wildlife (may change). Many of the contests have an ID portion and an exam portion. Judging contests include giving reasons, and the bowls are like quiz bowls! Please let me know what contest you are interested in participating in!! Once I have an idea of what teams we can set up, I will organize practices! 4-H Leader News National Volunteer Week April 12-18, H Leaders Thank You! Somewhere between the sternness of a parent and the comradeship of a pal is that mysterious creature we call a volunteer 4-H Leader. These leaders come in all shapes and sizes, and may be male or female. But they all have one thing in common - a glorious twinkle in their eyes! 4-H Leaders are found everywhere - at judging contests, 4-H meetings, fairs, and community service activities. They always are preparing for, sitting through, participating in, or recuperating from an event of some kind. They are tireless consumers of muffins, experts at taking knots out of thread and spend hours on the telephone, , facebook and other communication methods! A 4-H Leader is many things - an artist making a float for the Fourth of July, a doctor prescribing for an underfed calf, a counselor at camp, a lawyer filling out reports, and a shoulder to cry on when that dress just won't fit. Nobody else is so early to rise and so late to get home at night. Nobody else has so much fun with so many boys and girls. We can't do without them. They receive no salary and we can never repay them. They are angels in aprons, saints in straw hats. Their only reward is the love of the youth they work with and the respect of the community. But when they look around them at the skills they've taught, and the youth they've influenced, there's an inner voice from somewhere that says, "Well done." Author Unknown
