5 2018 NM State 4-H Ambassadors and Diplomats The light shines on Annick Ambrose for being selected by the State 4-H selection team as a 2018 New Mexico State 4-H Ambassador. Congratulations! The Ambassadors and Diplomats present leadership workshops to counties and assist the state officers with responsibilities for the State 4-H Conference, said Amy Zemler, the state 4-H youth activities specialist. Annick is a member of the Corralitos 4-H Club has been an active 4-H Member for over seven years. The State 4-H Ambassadors will chair the workshop at Journey: Opportunities for Leaders of Tomorrow in Arizona, and assisting with events at the New Mexico State Fair that include the livestock shows and McDonalds Farm, which involves educating young children about agriculture, at the NMDA building. At the end of their term, they will plan and host the 2019 Senior Leadership Retreat, a leadership and personal growth event for 4-H Senior age youth.

6 New Mexico 4-H Healthy Living Summit April 27-29, 2018 Summit Location: Glorieta Camp 11 State Highway 50 Glorieta, NM Cost: $40 per youth. Cost includes lodging, meals (Friday dinner Sunday Breakfast), workshop supplies and take home curriculum. Check-in: April 4:00 PM Program Concludes: April 11:30 AM New Mexico 4-H is looking for high school aged youth, in grades 8-12 with an interest in the Healthy Living programs who want to grow their leadership skills, learn more about the Healthy Living area and return to their county with new ideas to put into action and serve as ambassadors for 4-H Healthy Living. Each County team will be developing an action plan for healthy living programs in their area. Youth do not have to be enrolled in 4-H, but must register for this event through the County Extension Office in their county. I m asking you to join the rest of New Mexico 4-H as we pledge our hands to larger service! This April, National 4-H is launching the annual True Leaders in Service initiative, a way for all 4-H members to say thank you to their communities, counties, and states for all the support they have provided to 4-H for over 100 years. The month-long community service activation will officially kick-off the first day of April, and culminate with the National 4-H Day of Service on Saturday, April 28. We are encouraging youth and adults to venture out into the community to lend a helping hand through fundraising, neighborhood clean-up, beautification projects and much more. 7 2018 Regional Livestock School Presented by: NEW MEXICO SMALL FARM & RANCH TASK FORCE NEW MEXICO STATE 4-H WHEN: Friday, June 8th through Saturday, June 9, 2018 WHERE: Santa Fe County Fairgrounds, 3229 Rodeo Road Santa Fe, NM REGISTRATION DUE: June 1, CHECK-IN: Begins at 10:00 am; Instruction begins at 12:00 noon with lunch! The cost will be $50.00 person. This fee includes two meals (lunch both days) and stall space for a max of two project animals. Participants must provide their own feed, feed-water trough, and bedding. Additional meals for parents/younger siblings may be purchased that day for $5 each. Registration, Medical Release, Code of Conduct, Liability Release and Payment must be received to complete registration. Participation will be on a first come, first served basis; School size is limited to first 30 project applicants, per track. 4-H Dress Code practices: This is a hands-on working school, so please dress accordingly. Participants must wear shirts with a collar and sleeves, both long and short-sleeves are acceptable. ABSOLUTELY NO SHORTS OR HALTER TOPS (INCLUDING TANK TOPS, SLEEVELESS SHIRTS WITH OR WITHOUT COLLARS) WILL BE ALLOWED DURING THE LIVESTOCK SCHOOL. IF WORN, THE PARTICIPANT WILL BE ASKED TO CHANGE BEFORE THEY ARE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE. We ask that you please pick up your trash, clean stalls and alley-ways. Don t climb on fences, chutes and other fairground equipment. Participants are required to clean stalls. Bring shovel, pitchfork or rack for cleaning stall. No clipping or shearing of animals will be allowed. No dogs (except service dogs) will be allowed. We encourage every 4-H Club in the County to Sign up for a day during April 11- April 22 Your club can setup an information table, bag & offer to carry purchases, put up shopping carts etc. With the youth s presence people are more likely to give. This is also an opportunity to ask people to give to our small animal barn. 13 Sandoval County 4-H/FFA Livestock Show Rules The following rules have been adopted for the 2018 Sandoval County Livestock show: 1. Market lambs not meeting the required minimum weight are not eligible to sell in the Junior Livestock Sale or the Opportunity Sale (defined in Rule 7). Market swine under 190 lbs. or over 280 lbs. are not eligible to sell in the Junior Livestock Sale or Opportunity Sale. However, these animals that don t meet the required weight for their respective classes may be sold Private Treaty. 2. After the 53 animals have been sold, exhibitors who have not sold a large animal will be allowed to sell one (1) large animal only in a second sale referred to as the Opportunity Sale. 3. No meat or breeding small animals will be allowed to sell in the Opportunity Sale. The meat or breeding small animals may be sold to the Sandoval County 4-H Amigos Buyers Club for $50.00 per head or sold Private Treaty. 4. Market swine under 190 lbs. or over 280 lbs. will be shown in two separate sifted classes. A complete set of rules is available on the website: Dairy Feeder Calves New this year is the Dairy Feeder Steer Class. Any 4-H/FFA member may purchase a bucket dairy steer, raise it, and practice showing the steer for county fair. Dairy feeder steers are shown like a market beef steer. The dairy steers will be judged for muscling and condition. This is an inexpensive way to gain experience showing market cattle without the major purchase cost of the animal. 14 HORSE PROJECT MEMBERS Charmayne James is putting on a clinic in Santa Fe. Just in case you don t recognize the name, Ms. James is an eleven times World Champion Barrel Racer. She is the all time leading money earner in barrel racing, was the first ever $1,000, barrel racer, and is a member of the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. Let s spend Sunday, April 15th at the Charmayne James Barrels Clinic. This Clinic is a 3 day deal and costs riders $ We 4-Hers are invited to come to the Hippodrome in Santa Fe and to audit the clinic for free ( they are planning to set up bleachers inside the arena so we can see, and to have Ms. James use a microphone so we can hear what is going on.) We will need to be there at 8:30 AM on Sunday, April 15, 2018 and plan to spend the day. When I get a count of auditors, we will make a plan to get lunch, AND we will make travel plans (ie. meet at the extension office and car pool to Santa Fe). There will be a follow up clinic for us 4-Hers.Bring your horses the next weekend (Call D.K. for day and time) at the Branding Iron Arena in San Ysidro. Ms. James is allowing Renee DeWeese to attended the Santa Fe clinic at no charge so that she can come back to us and pass on what she has learned. 15 2018 New Mexico State 4-H Dog School The New Mexico State 4-H Dog School was designed to help the 4-H youth et a greater understanding of the 4-H Dog Project, their dog, and their responsibilities to their dog and community. There will be two days of dog and handler training classes, demonstrations and workshops. On the third day, there will be a dog show and awards. When: June 8-10, 2018 Where: Bernalillo County Sheriff s Posse Grounds in Albuquerque Registration Fee: $85.00 per 4-H Youth Optional: $18.00 (for daily meals for others attending with 4-H Youth Sandoval County DEADLINE Registration: Friday, April 27, 2018 which must include all registration fees, dog vaccination records, and medical release forms. RV hookup fee (electricity and/or water): $25.00 per ay (will be monitored by Bernalillo County Sheriff s Posse and must be paid to Dog School Committee or BCSP member). Registration Form at the end of this newsletter 2018 State 4-H Shooting Sports State Championship COUNTY SHOOT-OUT April 7, :00 am Contests Begin Del Norte Gun Club Meet at the Archery Range All Shooters that qualify for District or State Contest will receive an listing teams and registration forms. The State 4-H Shooting Sports Championship is scheduled for May 3-6, 2018, at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, New Mexico. This event is the state qualifying event for senior age 4-H members to go to the National Contest in Nebraska in Registration is $50.00 per participant. All shooters must qualify at the County Shoot Out or contact Steve. T-Shirts will be athletic apparel at a cost of $15.00 and must be purchased when registered. All registration is handled at Sandoval County Extension. Check-in will be on Thursday, May 3rd, from 3:00-6:00 pm and on Friday, May 4th, from 8:00-9:00 am.

18 SANDOVAL COUNTY 4-H SCHOLARSHIP Sponsored by Sandoval County 4-H Council Scholarship Information A Scholarship fund has been established by the 4-H County Council to provide financial assistance to 4-H members that wish to attend State, District, or County 4-H events. Scholarship will cover 50% of the registration expenses for Senior Leadership Retreat, Youth-Get-Away, Livestock School, Horse School, Home Ec School, 4-H Dog School, or $250 of the team fees for serving as a State 4-H Officer, Ambassador, or a Diplomat. The scholarship will cover 100% of the registration expenses for 4-H County Camp. The funding may not be used to attend State 4-H Conference, State 4-H Shooting Sports Contest, nor District Contest. Scholarship Criteria Available to any Novice, Junior or Senior 4-H Member. For Application, Link to: 4-H member must submit a Sandoval County 4-H Scholarship application Form.
