COUNTY DESIGNED 4-H T-SHIRTS...USING THE 4-H NAME AND EMBLEM Many 4-H clubs are creating designs for use on 4-H club shirts. These designs usually incorporate the 4-H Name and Emblem. The 4-H Name and Emblem is a highly valued mark within our country s history. Did you know it was granted a very unique and special status; it is in a category similar to the Presidential Seal and the Olympic Emblem? The 4-H Name and Emblem is federally protected by the Secretary of Agriculture. What does that all mean for 4-H clubs? You must have prior approval for any design which you would like to use in print/stitching. This includes articles of clothing as well as handouts and fliers. Enclosed to club organizational leaders is a handout on Using the 4-H Name and Emblem, as well as a Request Form for Approval of Use of the 4-H Name and Emblem. If your 4-H club is thinking of using the 4-H clover and/or name in a design, please complete the form and return to the Extension Office along with a copy of the graphic prior to any ordering or printing. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Colleen at the Extension Office.

A group of 4-H horse club members were practicing in the arena after a county show. One rider lost his seating and fell off. The 14-year-old was in extreme pain, so he was transported to the hospital by ambulance. X-rays found he had suffered a broken collarbone. 7 CHANGES IN THE 4-H VOLUNTEER SCREENING PROCESS Effective immediately, there are changes in the 4-H Volunteer Screening process. Up until now, the screening has been completed by the volunteers completing a paper form and mailing to the State 4-H Office. Now, the process will all be completed online. Volunteers will be asked to renew their screening every 5 years. The cost of the screening for 2018 is $2.50/person. However, the cost for screenings in 2018 will be paid by the State 4-H Office. Future payment options will be discussed by Nebraska 4-H/Extension Staff for If volunteers are asked to pay the $2.50 at the time of submitting the online screening in the future, it figures only 50 per year per volunteer since they are only screened every 5 years. Benefits of on-line screening: Ensures clear and accurate requests completed by volunteer. Eliminates the return of requests if information is not complete or illegible. The portal will require information be placed in data fields before requests are submitted. Eliminates the need for the 4-H organization to view personal information in the verification identities. No one will see volunteer s social security number and it will not be stored anywhere. Allow online identity verification. A person s identity can be easily and quickly verified online. As an alternative to the portal, verification can be done through a notary and the request sent through the US. Postal Service (but this method is not recommended). Using the Nebraska Central Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry will make the process of asking for, receiving, and reviewing information easier, more convenient and timelier for 4-H. (Up to 3 weeks faster.) We don t have a choice. Directions to Complete Volunteer Screening: Contact the Extension Office if you are a new leader and/or have not been screened in the past 4 years. You will need to provide an address. Extension staff will submit a request for volunteers to be screened to the State 4-H Office. Volunteers will then receive an invitation from DHHS.CFSCR@Nebraska.gov. Click on the URL in the to complete the registration process. You will be redirected to the screening application. Fill in your address under Applicant s Address. Create a four digit PIN and enter under PIN. Click next. (remember this PIN). Enter your First, Middle, and Last Name. Enter Date of Birth. Click check mark in bottom left corner of box. Enter your Social Security Number. Enter your current address. Enter your phone number. (dashes not parentheses) Add other names you may have used (maiden, former married name, or nickname) or check the no other names box. Add names and birthdate of children or check the no children box. List all previous address and cities at which you have resided or check the no other addresses box. Check the Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry (CAN Registry) and the Nebraska Adult Protective Services Registry (APS Registry). Click Submit. You will receive an from DHHS Central Registry when your Central Registry Check has been processed. This may take up to one week. To access information regarding your Central Registry check, you must enter the Request Number and PIN you created and on the portal website. Click on Response Letter and print for your records. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Extension Office.

8 FOCUS ON CHARACTER...RESPONSIBILITY! What is responsibility? Webster s dictionary defines responsibility as the quality or state of being responsible as a) moral, legal, or mental accountability, b) reliability, trustworthiness; something for which one is responsible. Responsibility is the state of being reliable and the state of being accountable. Responsibility is to do what you are supposed to do, think before you act...consider the consequences, and be accountable for your choices. 4-H members/families and 4-H leaders all have responsibilities in the 4-H program. 4-H members and families are responsible for attending club meetings; meeting club/county deadlines; completing 4-H ONLINE enrollments, contest entry forms, county fair entry forms, record books, and making sure they are given to your club organizational leader in ample time to be turned in to the Extension Office. 4-H leaders are responsible for holding 4-H club meetings (informing members of meetings scheduled and planning an agenda for the meeting) and meeting county deadlines (for example, enrollment deadline, contest entry forms, county fair entry form deadline, record book deadline, and deadline for livestock ID s). Each of us is responsible for the choices we make. And for every choice we make, there is usually a consequence. Consequences will be positive or negative, based on the choice which was made. Though others may influence us, we must take responsibility for our actions. Who we are today, is the result of choices we made yesterday. Tomorrow we will become what we choose today. To be responsible means to do your duty, to be accountable for your choices and their consequences, to pursue excellence, and to use self-control. Watch for the June Bow Knot. It will contain County Fair Entry Forms and important fair information.
