Happy Spring everyone! I am ready for warm weather, and all the 4-H fun that comes with it! As you plan your calendar I hope you are leaving room for County 4-H Camp at Rock Springs, June 13 th -16th. Camp registration is due May 10th and counselor applications will be due May 1st. Counselor applications are paper forms and are available online or in the office. If you have never been a camp counselor before please don t wait until the deadline because you will have volunteer paperwork to complete. Camp registration is all online this year and you can find those links on the 4-H page of DO NOT BUY THE EXTRA CAMP DOC INSURANCE WHEN YOU REGISTER FOR CAMP! Your campers have accident insurance when they go to camp, it is already included in the cost. On April 29 th, is Spring Livestock weigh in. If you are showing sheep, goats, pigs or bucket calves at the county fair, you must attend this weigh in. It is at Blythe s barn, Hackberry Rd. Maple Hill, Ks. The weigh in will be from 1-4pm. There will be a livestock education meeting after the weigh in. Lastly, May 1 is our 4-H project deadline and Horse ID paperwork deadline. With the new program fee please do not wait until May 1 st to enroll or check your projects. Do it now!! We are not able to add a 4-H project on May 2 nd or accept any Horse ID papers. If you have questions about 4-H online or Horse ID papers, please call us. Please take the time to let the new families in your club know about the importance of these deadlines. The projects you are enrolled in on May 1 st are the only projects you can participate in for the county fair. GOING TO PROJECT MEETINGS DOES NOT ENROLL YOU IN THAT PROJECT. If you have any questions, please let us know. 4-H ers can join a club after May 1 st but they cannot participate in 4-H divisions of the 2018 Shawnee County Fair. That decision was changed in March. Kansas State Fair and Junior Livestock Show will require PQA for swine participants and that is all. Leroy Russell will offer PQA trainings on June 5 th at 5:30pm at the Shawnee County Extension office. YQCA will be required for all species starting in All nominations this year must be completed on 2018 paperwork. Blank forms from last year will not be accepted. You can download the forms here: Our spring weigh in will be April 29 th at Rodney and Candace s Blythe barn at Hackberry Rd. Maple Hill. The weigh in will be from 1-4pm with a required educational course starting at four. The Livestock committee recommends youth come early to weigh in and take their animals home before coming back for the course because of parking issues. Youth must attend 2 of the 3 education courses to sell at the Shawnee County Fair Livestock Sale. The first course was in January on nutrition. This second course will be on showmanship, livestock show expectations and withdrawal times. The 3 rd course will be sometime Thursday at the Shawnee County Fair. Lastly, our Shawnee County Spring Livestock Show will once again be at the Jackson County Fairgrounds, just south of Holton. We will have Beef, Sheep and Goat shows on Saturday May 5th, and the Swine show will be on Sunday May 6th. Entry forms are on the Shawnee County 4-H website. We will also accept them without late fee at the April 29 th weigh in. 2

3 4-H Horse Identifications due - May 1 Horse deadlines are quickly approaching let s review a few frequently asked questions. Horse Ownership: Youth may own the horse themselves, or use a family-owned horse (immediate family: mother, father, stepparent, brother, sister, grandparent, or legal guardian). Leasing: The leasing option is intended for youth who are unable to participate fully in the 4-H horse project because they do not have access to family-owned horse, provided that they manage the horse at least 75 percent of the time from May 1 through September 30. If a 4-H member leases his or her project horse to another 4-H member, the leaser forfeits the right to use the horse. Sharing project horses: Siblings may show the same horse provided they are not in the same class. If both are in the same age classification, they must decide what classes each will show in. 2 year and 3-year old Snaffle-bit: No one is allowed to ride this nominated horse except you from May 1 until the conclusion of the Kansas State Fair. This includes a trainer, parents, horseless horse member, another 4-H member, sibling, potential buyer, etc Family and Consumer Sciences Judging Contest This year the Intermediate and Senior divisions of Family and Consumer Sciences Judging will be held on Saturday, Sept. 25 th from 9am-2pm. To Qualify for the two to four person team contest, you must submit your video portion by May 10 th to the Shawnee County Extension Office. This year s contest theme will be Health. There will be three components to complete as part of the contest: A team video entry identifying a community health issue, due locally by May 10. A hands on immersion activity related to health. A presentation inviting the team s perspective in response to their identified health challenge. For details on the content of the video and how it will be judged visit: One intermediate team and one senior team from the May 10 th video submissions will be selected to participate in the full contest in September. Ages for intermediate are 9-13 and senior is All members of the team must be in the same age division. 3

4 Kansas 4-H State Events and Activities True Leaders in Service and National 4-H Day of Service By Beth Hinshaw National 4-H is announcing True Leaders in Service, a month-long community service activation. It officially kick-offs the first day of April, and culminates with the National 4-H Day of Service on the last Saturday of April each year. Thousands of 4 H ers venture out into their communities throughout the month of April to do what 4 H ers do best: lead in service to tackle community challenges and help meet the needs of others. The National 4-H Day of Service can take place in every county across the country. 4-H members, adult volunteers and friends help improve their communities by adopting a service project. These projects can be done as individuals, as an entire county or district 4-H program, or anything in between. No matter the project, this is a day that will make a difference! Please register at : The goal of True Leaders in Service is to encourage 4-H members in every county to make a big impact on our country. Each 4-H club or program will choose how best to ignite their spirit of service as they offer help in hundreds of ways across the nation throughout the month of April and/or on the National 4-H Day of Service. If April 28 does not work for a project, any project in April can be a part of this effort. Over the past several years, we ve learned a lot about positive youth development (PYD) and the eight critical elements essential to PYD. One of the eight elements is the opportunity to value and practice service to others. This allows young people to develop a sense of pride and ownership in their community. It also allows youth and adults to work together while helping others. Finally, doing community service allows young people to build discipline, foster respect for others, promote civic responsibility, and participate in real world career-related experiences. 4

5 Kansas 4-H State Events and Activities Campference 2018-Leadership Through the Ages By Beth Hinshaw 4-H Campference is for youth ages (before January 1, 2018), and will be held June at Rock Springs 4-H Center. Participants will experience the feel of a conference, while enjoying the 'camp' activities Rock Springs 4-H Center has to offer. This is a great transitional opportunity, as tweens go from being a camper to attending educational conferences. 4-H Campference will feature workshops about opportunities in the 4-H program and how to better interact with others. Registration and detailed information will be on the State 4-H Website in late March. Register early as the space will fill on a first come basis, and Campference was full the last four years! Register online by May 15 (or earlier it will close when it is full) and payment must be in the local Extension Offices by May 15. When registration opens, a note will go out to local untis, and promotion will run on twitter, facebook and through direct to year-olds registered through 4HOnline. Our staff work an average of 10 hours a day with kids mostly 8-12 years old. We provide staff training on leadership skills and instructing the educational area of their specific position. These areas include STEM, conservation education, leadership adventure course, the horse barn, traditional camp activities, and more! 6 Kansas 4-H State Events and Activities Summer Host Update for International Exchanges By Mary Kay Munson Anyone interested in hosting should consider one of the Japanese inbounds, a Kansas 4-H Exchange Program inbound or an IFYE. Contact Mary Kay Munson, 4-H Exchange Coordinator at or munson@ksbroadband.net with questions or for referral to the Japan Exchange to host a girl or boy 3 ½ weeks July 23 to August 16. For the IFYE Program or Kansas 4-H International Exchange we are planning to host girls from Estonia, Germany, Greece and Thailand and a young man from Germany most of the summer for 2-3 week hosting periods with multiple families beginning June 19. Discovery Days Registration Discovery Days Registration is open! Please encourage youth who are years of age as of January 1 to visit Kansas State University and "Make a SLASH" at Discovery Days. This 4 day, 3 night experience is sure to have something for everyone. From attending classes and dances to participating in Discovery Days Night Live, make sure you are there! 7 Shunga Valley Great March meeting full of lots of fun! We met our 1 pound pop tab goal. We actually collected 2 pounds! Our club is on their way to collecting another poun tabs to help raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House. We ended our meeting with a fun filled song and a great game of Fruit Basket. Always a club favorite! Reporter: Haylee Richardson KCDC Farm Week July 31 - Aug 4 The Kansas Children's Discovery Center in Topeka, KS. is planning Farm Week July 31-Aug. 4. They are asking around to see if there are any 4-H groups or families who would like to bring farm animals to the Discovery Center for their guests to learn about and interact with. The goal is to have at least one animal and their expert onsite each day to share with guests, but would love to have several if possible. 8 Silver Lake The Silver Lake 4H club has been busy the last couple of months. At the monthly meeting in February, Olivia Day gave a presentation discussing the different categories of photography that can be entered at the county fair and gave examples of each. Then, members made Valentine cards for the Rossville Nursing Home and delivered them to the residents afterwards. In March, the club attended church together at Bethel Baptist Church and gathered for pizza and monthly meeting afterwards. Keith Nagy presented the benefits of public speaking and the many opportunities that come from getting involved in school speaking events/classes. Reporter-Olivia Day Shawnee Riders The Shawnee Riders 4-H has have lots going on in the last month! We met the last Tuesday in Feb at Hy-Vee instead of our usual location due to icy conditions the week prior. Haley Tillery brought her rabbit and gave an awesome project talk on her Netherland Dwarf SR buck, his name was ALVIN. We all loved hearing and learning about Rabbits! We also got everything finalized for out Windmill session on April 22 nd. We had a lot of fun planning for it! 8

9 This show is open to all 4-H ers and FFA members who are between the ages of 7-18 as of January 1, Exhibitors may only show beef, sheep, or meat goats that have been owned and tagged by May 5th, All out of state animals must have health papers, and be tagged according to Kansas Animal Health Department guidelines. Parents or other adults may only assist in feeding, leading, or haltering of animals.
