2 Meadows along Hell Creek DESCRIPTION: This big, rough old cattle ranch has changed very little since Charles M Russell inhabited one of the local cabins a century ago. The north end, laced with Ponderosa pine trees, borders the Charles M Russell Wildlife Refuge.. Moving south the trees disappear, and the rough country transitions into rolling prairie and grain fields. This is Montana hard grass country. 3 Snow Creel Inlet of Fort Peck Lake LOCATION: Hell Creek Ranch starts about 15 miles north of Jordan, Montana, and stretches contiguously north 6 miles to the south border of the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge (CMR). The ranch borders the CMR for about 5 miles. SERVICES: Jordan, Montana. is the county seat of Garfield County. The usual small town amenities include cafes, bars, quick stop, motels, bank, medical clinic with nursing home, Cenex, etc. The 4300 x75 ft public airport runway is, lighted and asphalt covered, but is unattended. Miles City, 82 miles south of Jordan, is the business hub of SE Montana. Services include livestock auction barn, farm supplies, machinery and car dealerships, Wal-mart, and a Veterans Hospital. In May, Miles City hosts the famous annual Bucking Horse Sale. Rodeo Stock contractors bid on a wide assortment of unbroken horses. Amateur cowboys all take their turn testing their riding skills. 5 Quonset has a concrete floor on the north half. South half has a dirt floor., 50 X 100 Quonset & Pens The sheep shed is about a mile south of the hqtrs. A pipeline from the well at the hunting cabin provides water inside the shed. Large Sheep Shed Usually the cattle remain on the range. Natural protection is excellent. Kitchen has propane stove, sink, refrigerator, and wood cabinets. The cabin has hardwood flooring, log rafters, and two ceiling fans. 7 Summer Fallow These 80 acres are on north end of ranch. What a food plot for elk & deer! Winter Wheat on SW Sections ACREAGE: Total acreage-14,898 +/-acres with 4,535 acres deeded, 9563 acres BLM, 640 acres State of Montana, and 160 +/-acres private exchange. The north pastures are not fenced off from the CMR, and by agreement run in common with 3,792 acres of the CMR. Cottonwood Creek runs for about 4 miles north to Hell Creek. 8 WATER: Snow Creek, and the Snow Creek Arm of the Ft Peck Lake are above the ranch in the CMR Grazing Allotment. Hell Creek, Cottonwood Creek, and Dry Fork Coulee run through the ranch. There are numerous reservoirs and springs. Rain Enhanced Cottonwood Creek Stock Tank on Pipeline Reservoir on Dry Fork Coulee A well at the headquarters supplies a pipeline to the north corrals and continues northwest. The well at the old Trumbo Ranch headquarters waters the pipeline to Cottonwood Creek, and than on to the sheep shed. There are two wells used seasonally by generators on the SE of the Dry Fork Pasture. 8

9 FISHING: A large reservoir on the ranch is stocked with walleye, perch, and bass. Snow Creek Inlet on Ft Peck Lake borders the grazing on the CMR. The next inlet east is where Hell Creek enters the lake. The Hell Creek Marina is well established as a premier fishing destination for walleye, sauger, pike, lake trout, bass, channel catfish, and paddlefish on Ft Peck Lake. State record walleye have been caught there. Stocked Ranch Reservoir HUNTING: Elk are resident to the ranch, with trophy bulls harvested. Mule deer with 30 spread, and antelope ½ have been taken. Turkeys, sage hens, sharp tail grouse, and pheasants live here. Part of the 1,100,000 acre Charles M Russell Wildlife Refuge 9

10 Snow Creek Inlet of Fort Peck Lake The CMR is home to Montana s largest elk herd, record book mule deer, and 1,600 miles of Ft Peck Lake shoreline. LEASES: BLM $1,943. 11 HISTORY & LEGEND: Charles Russell lived here in a cabin. The butte in this picture is in several of his paintings. The cabin burned to the ground, but the paintings live on. Charles M. Russell Cabin Site At another location, the posse captured the robbers who held up the Jordan Bank. The gold was never recovered. Legend is the gold is still buried somewhere on the ranch. PRICE & TERMS: $1,975,000 COMMENTS: This is an easy running 300 cow ranch. The winters are open, often feeding about 1 ton of hay/cow/winter. Very scenic, remote, rough, wilderness ranch. The wildlife and hunting is very good. If the 500 acres of farmland were seeded to oats or alfalfa, it would be a huge magnet for wildlife. Ranches like this are hard to find and well worth the money. A century ago the first T. rex was discovered here in these badlands.
