RACES RUN: September 28th: Barns Green Half In unusually warm temperatures of over 22deg on Sunday, Crowborough Runners won two good places for their ladies at Barnes Green Half Marathon. With more than 1220 runners finishing the leafy undulating course, many struggled with the combination of heat and hills but a high level of support throughout the race, including music from Christ s Hospital School orchestra, encouraged the team on. Lydia Godfrey led the club in at winning 3 rd place LV40-44 and Mary Nightingale won another 1 st LV55-59 at Other team results: Dave Hynes and Sarah Hilliard Place Time Name Category Number Chip Grading :44:19 Lydia Godfrey Vet Ladies :43: :48:24 Mary Nightingale Vet Ladies :47: :49:22 Dave Hynes Vet Men :48: :22:09 Sarah Hilliard Vet Ladies :20:

Bristol Half, 21 st September 2014 Attached is a piccie from after the Bristol Half. James W Sharon: 2:00:47 PB Dominique. 2:38.55 All of us are in training for the Amsterdam Mara and half. It was a large event with over 10,000 runners setting off in two waves, one at 9.30 and one at Starting near the old harbourside we went west, past the historic dockyard and the SS Great Britain, then along the River Avon going under the Clifton suspension bridge, up the valley to Horse Shoe Point which was a bit of a climb, then turned round at 4.5 miles to head back to the city. There were a number of twists and turns going around Queen Square and Castle Park with a few inclines and then back to the finish in Anchor Road. There were small sections of cobbles en-route and I had 500 feet of climbing on my Garmin. Good T shirt and medal and one I would do again.

The Amsterdam Marathon Sunday Oct 19th. When ordering the coffees prior to our short flight over the North Sea I said to John when paying, shall we go Dutch? A couple of hours later we were at the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam collecting our numbers and looking round a large Expo prior to the race. Gouda get your race numbers before doing anything else, I thought. Having taken it easy on the Saturday before the run by taking in a canal cruise and watching the sights of the city float by we were up early trying to find a tram to the start. Having waited with about 50 runners at one stop someone suggested the trams were doing a U turn and going from the previous stop (not ours) so about 50 runners suddenly legged it over a canal to catch a very cramped and overloaded tram. The marathon started at 9.30 in the Olympic stadium built for the 1928 games whilst the half started from 1.30 p.m. on the road outside. Our ladies who ran the half, Swati, Sharon and Dominique had to walk nearly four miles to the start as no trams were moving by then! There were 20,000 in the half and several thousand in an 8K run. Can you imagine over 16,000 runners filtering onto the track start line for the full marathon? It was a very tight squeeze and took us over 12 minutes to get over the line, then it was a squeeze to get out of the entrance onto the somewhat narrow course. It was certainly hard work on the course and on a very warm day as we wound our way slowly through the Vondel Park and an even tighter squeeze going through the gateway to the Rijksmuseum at about 5K slow enough to view the Nightwatch! We wound our way round the city until we hit the Amstel river and down a towpath. For those that have run the Ostende to Brugges imagine that course with runners three to four deep each side of you and in front and behind nipping at your heels we had to watch our feet till about 20 miles which was really playing on the windmills of my mind, going past a few of the mills as we did then over some narrow bridges. By half way we were under two hours but not quick enough due to the traffic of runners. It was hard going past our hotel at about 37K! It then also rained a bit for a few K as we headed back through the Vondel Park back to the stadium. I helped a Dutch runner from the city who looked a bit inexperienced and not sure what to do with a gel. I said just rip the top off and place it between your two lips from Amsterdam... All five of the Crows finished their respective races but times were down. Nice course, but 42,000 runners for all the races were simply too many clogging up the routes. Nice sights and a cracking weekend nevertheless. Now, what about next spring. I am thinking of a wonderful, wonderful marathon... James, John, Swati, Sharon and Dominique supported by Kev and Debbie

Sorry, no group photo as we started the marathon at 9.30 and the girls didn't start the half until Times were as follows: Marathon: John Tighe, 3:57:37 James Welbury 4:00:38 Half Marathon: Swati Patel, 1:59:20 Sharon Wheeler: Dominique: 2:41:33 There were 16,000 in the marathon and it took us over 12 mins to get over the line with nearly 20,000 in the half. The course started in the Olympic Stadium for the marathon and outside for the half but we all finished with a lap of the track on a course with, surprisingly, 205 feet of elevation taking in the sights of Amsterdam and the surrounding suburbs and countryside with canals and windmills in sight for the large part. A very busy and congested course which was quite narrow in parts, including canal and river tow paths plus a squeeze through the gateway of the Rijksmuseum and through the Vondel Park. NB Peter did Bournemouth the two weeks ago in 4.04 with 200 runners.

Beachy Head Marathon Crowborough Runners fielded a team of both runners and walkers at the Beachy Head Marathon, considered amongst the toughest off road events in the country. Leading the team in with a strong run of under 4 hours and in 15th female place was Anna Tolmachova, closely followed by Lydia Godfrey at 4.09 who was 29th lady. Both runners are in training for next year's London Marathon where they are hoping to beat their previous marathon records. First man in for the club was Bryan Tapsell at Some of the club runners opted on this occasion to walk or jog the course with their non-running partners and friends, enabling them all to enjoy the fabulous scenery and share the experience at a less competitive pace. Anna Tolmachova (15th lady) Lydia Godfrey (29th lady) Bryan Tapsell Tony Hufflett Audrey Nioucel Dan Aubrey Chloe Kirkin Liz Davies Sarah Hilliard Mary Nightingale Roger Roger Stone Veronique Maggi Bradgate Sarah Hilliard, running for Demelza House Pre-race snacks (free tea and cakes)

JUNIOR NEWS November 2014 With the XC season for the juniors in full swing there have been some notable achievements since the last newsletter. James and Matt McCarthy tasted success at the South East Regional Biathlon Championships held in Gillingham. James claimed the U15 boys gold medal and twin brother Matt secured 4th place narrowly just missing out on Bronze. As a result of their hard work and training, the boys, who compete for both Beacon Swimming Club and Crowborough Runners, have qualified for the National Finals in Birmingham next month and the National Schools Finals at the Olympic Park next March. Crowborough Runner Juniors also gained success in the Tonbridge Junior XC 1 mile race held last week-end. Rory Gallagher took first place in an excellent time of 6:29. Rory had taken 9th place in the same race in October but took an amazing 37 seconds off his last run to claim top spot. In the girls race Ella Ayden in her first race for the club finished in 10th place and with another great time of 7:48. Two of our primary school athletes will also be representing the North Wealden District at Lancing College in March After two qualifying races both Rory Gallagher and Ellie Fraser qualified and will be competing against young athletes from other areas of Sussex. The junior club also paid its first visit to the Tunbridge Wells 5K Park Run and all athletes ran exceptionally well given that for some it was the first time they had run the distance. James McCarthy who took overall 3rd place in the race ran followed closely by Matt McCarthy (6th). Other fine performances included Taylor Morley 22.03, Rory Sturgeon 22.11, McKinley Loxton-Reid 22.21, Rory Gallagher 22.36, Adam Fee 25.51, Callum Darien-Smith 27.34, Alicia Blythe 27.51, Danni Taylor and Reuben Coppard Next week we have Dave Leach an experienced Endurance Coach from Lewes AC visiting the Club and we are all looking forward to the session with him. All coaches are welcome to attend. Goldsmiths Track On Thursday November 20th my wife is running a Child Protection Seminar/Workshop and how it relates to our sports club. It will be held at the Crowborough Community Centre and would be most beneficial to anyone who assists with the children at the running club. If you would like to attend please contact Nicky. Thanks to all the Crowborough Runners and parents who have helped out on Saturdays with the Junior XC races, Mary who has got so much of the junior news into print and finally a big massive thank-you to Jane who has worked with me for a year now since we started the Saturday Club your regular presence and contribution will be missed by us all but good luck in the valleys!!. Dave H, Head Coach

Ok, I will start with saying that I can't believe that I'm writing a report about a 38 mile run which I have just completed! I'm going to try and bring you with me all the way on this run but fortunately you get no pain. Chloe picked me up at 6am to head for a 7:15 pick up in Shoreham for the race organization to drop us off to the start. This way our car was already at the finish. As 38 miles will be my longest ultra, I was feeling very apprehensive about the distance. Whilst chatting to Chloe on the minibus an hour went by and I kept thinking and laughing to myself how much further? We weren t even near the start yet and I've got to run all the way back! There were a lot of good runners on the bus, who were all talking about their 100 mile runs and most of them wearing a T-shirt with a 100 mile ultra-finisher. I started to doubt myself at this point and hoping that my training would pay off. We soon arrived at the start with 40 minutes to spare so we registered and dropped our bags off. We met up with some other ultrarunners who we knew, and then we headed up a big hill to the start where we was briefed.

The weather was full sun and about 12 degrees, but a little chilly in the shade so at this point me and Chloe said our goodbyes and had our good luck hugs. I was soon on my way at 9am headline towards the first aid station at around mile 9. I took an s-cap which is a salt and electrolyte capsule, the course terrain was as expected, with slight sand and light gravel as it s an old disused railway line. Very similar to the forest way and with views either side. There was a few small road sections where we had to follow the Downslink onto its old path again but wasn't too confusing so the navigation on this race was easy really. I arrived at the first aid station had a few pretzels and carried on to mile 19 or 20 for more fuel. I had my chia charge flap jack at mile 20 with some seed mix and an s-cap with some water, at this point I was averaging around 9:00-10:00 minute miles and felt comfy. The runners were spread out now and on some parts I was alone which was ok as I train alone most days anyway. I took a gel around mile 24 with another flapjack before reaching Marathon distance. I finally reached mile 29 which was another aid station so I took full advantage with a well-deserved pork pie, cherry tomato, pretzels, and some flat coke, it was outside a pub and I was watching people supping on cold beer which looked lovely.

I was told the last aid station was at mile 33 or 34 so at this point I knew that I had reached 31 miles previously, but what's beyond that is unknown territory. As I got to mile 32 I looked at my watch and couldn't believe the distance but believe me the mind games started. At mile 33 I was having a bit of a bad time - I was really struggling. A fellow runner gave me a handful of chocolate covered coffee beans these took the edge of the pain a bit but just numbed it for a while. I reached the last aid station and filled my bottles and took a gel and glucose tablet. I was feeling slightly sick to be honest but that soon went as I started running again. With still 4 miles to go I was hurting a lot now. Even the next two miles was very tough, I was seriously aching all over now almost like flu symptoms but in a strange way it felt ok. Knowing I had two miles left, I couldn't help but cry, don t know why but it just happens. I shuffled another mile then I could just about see the finish over bridge, as I expected the endorphins kicked in and all the hairs on my body stood up and I was tingling all over. I felt on top of the world, I see my son and wife at the finish line which was lovely. Great event and lovely scenery. Sussex trail events organized this event with perfection! I done it, 38 mile ultra! I came in at 6 hours 31 minutes 37th out of 88 runners 29th male I learnt even more on this run about fuelling and hydration. Whatever I was eating or drinking in training I done the same on race day. I was well prepared in the week leading up to this but I'm still learning. It s all in the mind really just keep going forward and the miles fly by! I m used to running alone so that don't bother me much but what does is going into the unknown. POS NAME TIME 37 DANIEL AUBREY CHLOE KIRKIN runners, winner 4h30

I have entered into the Thames trot 50 mile race on February 7th this will be a bigger challenge but all part of my plan leading up to the London to Brighton challenge 62 mile run in May. I just love being out there running but hate it when a race is over so the further the distance the more I'm enjoying it, yes it hurts yes I'm mad but when you cross that finish line it s all worth it click below to see my stats on the run

Beginners Monday Club (from Courier) Want to get fit and start running? Just over a year ago Crowborough Runners set up a beginners group on a Monday. The group meets next to the running track adjacent to the Freedom Leisure centre every Monday and starts at 7 p.m. for 45 minutes. The group now attracts up to 25 willing and enthusiastic runners many of whom had never run or had not run or undertaken much exercise since school or prior to having a family. Some are coming back from running after a long absence. So would you like to get fit, would you like to be able to run a mile steadily or run a 5K park run or fun run after a few months training? Do you know how to warm up or to stretch properly or do you want to progress to longer runs and onto other sessions with Crowborough Runners, then why not try the Club out starting on a Monday evening. All you need is a goal, some running shoes and a willingness to train and build up your running slowly. The Crowborough beginners recently tested themselves over a mile and times were as follows, bearing in mind most people weren't running last year: Frances Hardy, 8:06. Lucie Rexstrew, 8:16. Sophie Cheek, 8:17.Deborah Dixon, 8:25. Rachel Goften, 8:27. Mike Buckley, 8:53. Naomi O'Keefe, 9:26. Helen Hamilton Smith & Steph Kirkin, 9:31. Sammy Fee, 9:37. Sue Pebbles, 10:15 and Sue Rumens, 11:31. Sue recently celebrated her 60th birthday and has taken that brave step to get fitter. Lucie, Sophie and Rachel have all now also completed 5K Park Runs with Racher recently covering the Tunbridge Wells 5K in just over 29 minutes. ATB James

Club Championship A great set of runs over the last year saw Anna easily win the ladies championship for the first time while Kevin ran well to win the men s championship for the third time in four years. Swati showed her continuing improvement by winning the LV35 category, while Marije s 10K a week before the end of the championship year saw her take the LV45 prize. Often moving up an age group can spur runners on to run well and Mary was an example last year, having a great season with several personal bests and race prizes, so that, unsurprisingly, she comfortably won the LV55 category. Meanwhile in the men s age groups, Dan continued his recent dominance in the senior men, to win the category for the fourth year in a row, while Chairman John also claimed his fourth category win for him it was in the MV40 age group. Kevin s overall championship win meant that James won the MV50 prize while Peter is still the only ever winner of the MV60 category, having won in the two years that this has been awarded. Well done to all the winners and also everyone who did a PB or an age-group best this year. 24 NEW TRACK NEWS Great continued momentum in the push for a new track at Goldsmiths led by James Update on the track project: Did you know that the pot holed, puddle bedecked and often flooded old cinder track we use is famous? Famous as it is the last known laid cinder track in the UK and Wealden is the largest English County district without an all-weather athletics track. Well, we all know how bad it is that's why the Club has tried over many years to get the track upgraded. Funding is the biggest problem (do you know anyone rich who could help)? We have had two main lottery bids turned down but following meetings with England Athletics we have taken advice about what type of facilities would be the most likely to attract Sport England funding. So, we are re-launching the quest to get something done but we do need your help. We have set up a track sub-committee with Andy, Sarah, Swati and James but we need others to come on board. Are you good at fund raising from business? Do you have some time to spare as there are so many people to contact and much to do - if so, contact James - we really need all the help we can get. The advice we have is that we are unlikely to get any funding from Sport England for a new 400M track due to the proximity of Lewes and Tonbridge (try rushing home, then going to Tonbridge in the rush hour!!) So, we have been advised to try for a mixed facility which could comprise of a 100 or 200m four lane track, a 200 m two lane (to complete the 400m) with jumping and throwing areas plus new fencing and lighting. This would be similar to what is being constructed at Paddock Wood and would be the most likely to get us a grant or two. The costs would be about 200,000. Sport England will only fund 20% of this so we need to raise funds ourselves, and get other grants and potentially S106 Planning Gain money from the council amongst other funds. The Club only has about 5000 put away so it will be a hard slog to get the rest which is why we need your help and ideas. Perhaps one idea would be to attract business sponsors who could buy a square meter at a time to get advertising rights. The next step is to discuss this with the Town Council to see if they will agree to our plans as they own the land. If they do we would have to set up a tenancy agreement with them giving us the right to construct. We also need to consider setting the Club up as a charity which may involve a change in the Club's constitution (which would need voting on by members). We will need to attract business funding partners too James

Sunday 24th May :00am 50km Ultra Trail 9:00am Trail Marathon 10:30am Trail Half Marathon The Weald Challenge Trail Races follow the long distance paths of the Wealdway and the Vanguard Way. All three races start and finish in the village of Chiddingly and encompass the surrounding beauty of the Sussex countryside en route. The courses are approximately 75% (half marathon) - 85% (ultra) off-road, and as the runners travel along the picturesque and undulating routes, they will take in a great variety of landscapes containing rolling hills, irregular shaped fields and ancient woodlands. Runners participating in the 50km Ultra Trail race will experience the added bonus of the spectacular views from the open heathland of the Ashdown Forest. Invitation to the Weald Challenge: Dear Runners, Last year Barry and I did the 'half marathon' Weald Challenge and rather enjoyed the countryside, the route, the amazing refreshments provided during the race but most of all, the delicious cakes offered to us at the end... from chocolate cake to fruit cake, wheat free cake and gluten free cake. Oh, what an amazing memorable race it was!!! Please link and below. Number of entries are limited. Last year they sold out quick. See you all soon. Katerina

Marathon stats.. This one s quite cool a bar chart looking at the times from 9 million marathon finishes (USA) If you remember your school GCSE maths you will see Mode time (most common)= 3:59 Median (50% faster 50% slower) looks to be about 4:15

SGP update With results in for all but the last two races of the year (Brighton 10K and our own Crowborough 10K) Mary Nightingale is still in first position in the ladies V5 category. A fantastic effort from her and she looks well set to win the category. The ladies V5 category is where we are strongest with Dominique Welbury in 6 th and Maggi Bradgate in 7 th. Dominique s 6 th place puts her ahead of James who is in 7 th in his category (MV4). Sharon Wheeler in 10 th in the ladies V4 is the other CR in a top 10 spot. The SGP prize giving will be on Friday 6 th February 2015 at its normal location of the Jack & Jill pub in Clayton. At the SGP AGM last month, it was decided to do away with sexism, so from next year instead of 10 men and 5 ladies counting towards the team prizes, it will be 10 men and 10 ladies (and 5+5 for the vets teams). Ladies, your contributions will be even more important than before. I will let you have a list of dates for the SGP races next year when I receive it. Roger Sunday runs It is a good time for someone with a fresh view to organise Sundays now that Bryan & Roger are no longer able to do this. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday sessions are all attracting good, and sometimes record, numbers of runners but Sundays have often been poorly attended and we struggle to find a time / distance / terrain / speed to suit enough people. Do you have any bright ideas to try out? In the meantime Sharon has agreed to organise Sunday runs about once a month which will be suitable for slower runners Bryan has agreed to keep on organising occasional Sunday runs hosted from people s houses which are always popular So look out for s and newsletter reports about the dates of these. Roger & Bryan

Minutes: Crowborough Runners AGM 25th September Apologies: Paul Rundle, Min Smithers, Avis Holden, Jamie Woolgar, Dave Stewart, Russell Taylor, Elaine Taylor, Gary Callaghan, Marije Fields, Alan Stewart 2. Matters arising: To be covered in individual report back by committee members 3. Chairman s report: John referred to the various social events that had taken place during the year, including the runs hosted by individual members, those members who had run in the London and Brighton marathons, the developing junior section, the discussions about the Goldsmith s track development, the great success of the K event. He said that UK Athletics after consultation with Clubs/ athletes had determined to increase the affiliation fee over future years. He welcomed the support that many members had given to particular events in the year e.g. Bexhill, Newick etc. He stated that he would welcome ideas for greater Club turnout at certain events. Lastly John encouraged all members to think about standing for one of the vacant committee posts. 4. Cross Country Manager s report: Bryan referred to the 2013/14 League events. The Club had ended the series in 5 th out of 18 teams. Particular achievements of individuals were:- The CR men s champion was Alan Stewart The CR women s champion was Anna Tolmachova Individual positions of note in the league were: SW Anna Tolmachova 4 th F35 Audrey Nioucel 4 th F45 Nathalie Welsh 4 th F55 Mary Nightingale 4 th Carol Woodward 5 th F60 Brenda Styles 5 th The first fixture of the 2014/5 season was to be held on 2 nd November, with the Ashdown Forest fixture being on the 1 st February He encouraged club members to take part in the series. 5. Road Running Manager s report: Roger thanked all members for the various results of events that individuals had competed in. Congratulations go to Brenda Styles and Maggi Bradgate who for the fifth year in a row won 3 rd prizes in their respective age-groups for the 2013 Sussex Grand Prix (SGP) In terms of the 2014 SGP events, Roger reported that we were in 14 th place out of 23 teams in the Men s event and in 10 th place out of 23 teams in the ladies event. So far only 3 club athletes had completed the ideal number (for scoring purposes) 8 events. Individually Mary is currently in an excellent 1 st place in the Ladies V5 category and the Club wished her well in maintaining her lead to the end of the season.

Over the last club year (Sep-Aug) highlights in terms of individual results were PBs by the following runners at different distances:- Dan Aubrey (10K, 10M, and Half marathon, not to mention 50K) Steve Bolton (Half) Nicky Darien-Smith (Half) Louise Ellis (5M and 10K) Marije Field (Half) Steve Hickey (10K) Mary Nightingale (10K, 10M) Swati Patel (10K) Lucka Rexstrew (5M) John Tighe (10K) Anna (Half, Marathon) Dominique (5K,10M) Sharon (5K, 10K, 10M There was a lengthy discussion regarding Sunday runs and the water rota. This was especially relevant given the wish of Bryan and Roger to reduce their involvement in the organisation of both, and the low number of attendees for most runs. The outcome of the discussion was that: Another e mail should be issued to members asking for a volunteer (perhaps one of the regular Sunday attendees) to organise and advise members of the route and distance options for the run. Sharon kindly agreed to organise an easy paced group once a month on a Sunday, who like her Wednesday night group, would run together for the whole of the run. Those at the meeting felt that this would help a greater number of runners to come along to the session, as the current run lengths were perhaps too long /too fast for some Club members. Hosted Sunday runs seemed popular, and these could be encouraged further One scenario spelled out by Annie was for a common start to the run with perhaps a number of options for varying distances after that. James mentioned one example where the run had been from Kings Standing and he had run there and back to add further distance. Similar pace runners could always run together so no one was left behind. Faster runners could always loop back so slower runners were not left behind. The start time could be re-examined to see if a more popular start time could be arranged. The water rota should be retained as each member was only required to cover the rota every 18 months and the presence of a car was always useful if runners wanted to cut the run short. [Subsequent to the meeting Roger said that he is willing to put together details and maps of the routes commonly used on a Sunday and also help anyone who takes over the water rota organisation to create the water rota for the next six months and Bryan has offered to help organise the hosted Sunday runs, as he is in discussion with various Club members who have offered to host runs on a Sunday. He would see the host as organising and planning the route, unless they invited suggestions from himself or Roger]. 6. Secretary s report: There was unanimous support for amending the Club constitution to add one further Committee Member viz. Lead Junior Coach. This was in the view of the increasing activities of the junior section - Saturday morning sessions throughout the year, continued high numbers attending the Summer Thursday evening sessions, involvement in a range of open meetings in Kent and Sussex and lastly the importance of the juniors section in the Club gaining Club mark status (a quality mark for Athletic clubs) Andy reported that the number of London marathon Club entries would not be known until the end of October so he proposed to invite interest in the Club places (very likely to be 2 places again), as soon as

the reject slips had been received by those who had applied via the main ballot. The criteria for entering the draw would be the same as in Hold a reject slip for the main Marathon draw Have been a member for more than a year Helped at the 10k or with the Sunday water rota Not received a Club place the previous year No news had been received to date with regard to Brighton Marathon places. 7. Treasurer s report: Sarah reported that there had been 2366 surplus in 2013/14. This meant total reserves stood at 10,036, with 5,000 of this sum being in the reserve account, earmarked for the track fund. The key reason for the surplus was the high level of income in the year ( 10,166). The surplus resulted from the profits from the 10k race and emphasised how dependent the Club was on 10K profits, and on high levels of junior grant aid. The main expenditure for the juniors had been coaching costs and track hire. Care needed to be taken to retain a good levels of funds overall as the club was so dependent on the 10K profits and these could be volatile. The accounts were adopted by the meeting. Sarah then outlined proposals for the subscriptions levels for 2014/15. The subs were due from 1/9/14. Adult subscriptions were proposed at 15 plus the 12 England Athletics affiliation fee, and the junior subs at 20 plus any EA fee (Higher because of the greater costs involved to the Club). The Club affiliation fee had increased from 75 to 100. Sarah reminded members that the athlete/club affiliation fee allowed for respectively, lower entry fees to be paid and for insurance cover. Family membership fees would continue at the same discount level. The subscriptions proposed by Sarah were accepted by the meeting. 8. Captain s report: Sharon said that the weekday sessions were progressing well with good number of athletes attending. Mention had already been made earlier in the meeting about the Sunday runs. She reminded the meeting about Club vests being available at 15/vest. She stressed the need to wear reflective kit/ arm flashers for evening training on the roads. 9. Social Secretary s report: Ian outlined some of the successful events in 2013/14, the Christmas meal/ dance (51 attended), the hosted runs at Christmas/ New Year/Easter, the summer pub runs and the hosted Sunday morning runs. He thanked all those members who had hosted events. Volunteers to host this year s Christmas Eve and New Year s Days runs were asked to contact him. Mention was also made of the Wednesday night summer pub runs. He hoped to organise a Club quiz night next year. Planning had started in respect of the Christmas meal/dance for 2014 (Saturday 13 th December). It seemed very likely that it would be held again at Barnsgate Manor but he was also checking the East Sussex National golf club as a venue. The Club would subsidise the cost per person to the extent of 10 per member and 5 per guest. He finished by referring to the later agenda item re-election of Committee, where he hoped to stand down as Social Secretary, having covered this role for 2 years. 10. Club Development Officer s report: James outlined a number of initiatives that he had been involved in: * Beginners Group. Operating now for a year. Number had built up during the year and it would be helpful to have assistance from other Club coaches and if other members were interested in taking the Leadership and Running fitness qualification and then help with the Monday group. He thanked all those coaches who had helped in 2014 and in particular Sharon Wheeler. Two meetings had been held recently with regard to track development, involving England Athletics, the Town Council and Freedom Leisure. It seemed that one possible option for increasing grant support was for the track development to be set up as a registered Charity, as this would enable Sports England and Lottery funding to be accessed and for private sector donors to claim

back Corporation Tax. The development would need to offer some throws and jump facilities. A visit was to be organised to Paddock Wood Athletic Club to check on the approach they had adopted for their track development. James asked for help with establishing a Charity. Swati kindly agreed to assist in this task. Drawings/development plans had been commissioned from a track consultant to provide a basis for grant applications. Temporary works to the track were urgent whilst the track developments were progressed. Possible options included flattening of the track surface, Chip timing. James said that he had approached Sussex AAA to see if Sussex Clubs could get together to jointly fund a chip timing system. Nick Anderson training. James said he was very disappointed with the numbers attending the last session on the previous Thursday. He wondered about the viability of future sessions. Some members queried the advance publicity for the event 11. Junior section: - Dave explained that the junior summer evening sessions had been held on a Thursday evening in order to avoid a clash with senior track training on a Tuesday. Over 50 junior athletes had signed up over the summer and regularly 30/35 athletes had attended the sessions each week. He thanked Jane, Nicky, and Chloe for their help with the Saturday am sessions. A good junior boys' team was gradually forming and he hoped that it would be possible to replicate this success with a junior girls section. His aim was to aim for several Crowborough juniors to represent Sussex in the County Schools competition. Some very good placements had been achieved in the recent Tonbridge Park run. He hoped that more Club members would be able to help on a Thursday evening next year. There had been a shortage of coaches at times in K report: Kevin stressed what a major fundraiser the 10K was for the Club. He said that in 2014 it was proving that more stringent requirements were set down for award of the Race permit. The water station had to be moved to Palesgate because of traffic worries in Green Lane. More helpers were required at the finish, to record times and places and to ensure tighter funnel control A lead person was required for car parking at main site. An information desk was needed in the main site Hall 50 marshals were needed for course management. (It seemed unlikely that a road closure would be achieved for Green Lane. A baggage drop area was required. It was suggested that juniors might be able to help with the baggage area and Andy offered to help with car parking. Kevin asked for volunteers to assist with other roles he had outlined. 13. Membership Secretary: Ron asked those at the meeting to advise on how many members the Club now had. After a few guesses Ron advised that there were currently 58 competitive numbers and 14 Social non running members. There were also 6 honorary members. Ron emphasised that all members needed to advise him of change of address or e mail address. He asked that those at the meeting should pay subs if possible to him and Sarah after the meeting and that he would remind all members who had not paid of subscription levels for 2014/15, in about one month s time. 14. Newsletter Editor: Tony thanked the regular contributors to the bi monthly newsletter. He urged all members to send in their race reports. He also mentioned that he would like to relinquish the editorship and hoped a new editor would volunteer to take his place. He stressed that the skills needed were essentially an ability to copy and paste the articles received into a similar format for the newsletter, before issue.

15. Election of committee for 2014/15 All post holders on the committee were prepared to stand for a further year, apart from the Newsletter Editor and the Social Secretary. As no nominations had been received for any of the committee posts all of the posts where Committee members were prepared to stand for a further year were re-elected unopposed. John and Andy urged those at the meeting to consider filling either the Newsletter Editor post or the Social Secretary. Unfortunately there were no nominations received and therefore Tony and Ian reluctantly agreed to fill the posts for a further year. Should anyone be interested in taking one of the roles but unsure of what is involved, Tony and Ian were happy to mentor someone with a view to taking over next year. 16. Award of Trophies Roger advised the AGM of the various winners:- Road Running: Men overall: Kevin Battell MV1: John Tighe MV2: James Welbury MV3 Pater Maddison Ladies overall: Anna Tolmachova LV1 Swati Patel LV2:Marije Field LV3 Mary Nightingale Cross-country Men: Alan Stewart Ladies: Anna Tolmachova Handicap Men; Joint award Russell Taylor, Tony Hufflett, Alan Edney Ladies: Steph Kirkin Most Improved Runner: Sharon Wheeler Services to the Club award Not awarded at the meeting Captain s Trophy 17. AOB James Welbury Mary reminded the meeting that she welcomed potential articles for the local paper. Copy deadline was Tuesday pm. Photos along with the text helped ensure the article was selected by the Courier for publication. The paper was always interested in reports of PBs, notable placings, Kevin mentioned that he would probably be looking to hire an inflatable finish assembly for the Crowborough 10k. The meeting concluded at 10.10pm. 28 members attended the meeting

Information for Club Newsletter November 2014 The following correspondence has been received by the Club, which may be of interest to Members : Web link for Seaford striders for mince pie 10 mile road race on 7 th December 2. Guaranteed entry for Brighton Marathon 2015 Firstly I would like to introduce myself, I am the Events Fundraiser at Rockinghorse Charity and look after our challenge events. Rockinghorse is a Brighton-based charity which has been supporting children for over 45 years. It was set up in 1967 by Dr Trevor Mann, who recognised there was a real need for additional resources to improve healthcare services for sick children and babies. We are the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children s Hospital (the Alex) and also support the Trevor Mann Baby Unit (TMBU), where we raise money for life-saving and cutting-edge medical equipment, while ensuring that children are treated in an environment that is better suited to their needs. We believe no matter where they are, children should be allowed to be children. Working in partnership with the Alex and TMBU, we strive to make services stimulating, cutting edge and accessible for the many babies, children and teenagers who need them. We do not receive any government funding and so we rely on the generous support of individuals, community groups, companies and trusts: people like you. The reason for my is that we currently have some guaranteed places available for the Brighton Half Marathon on Sunday 22 nd February 2015 and the Brighton Marathon on Sunday 12 th April If any of your runners fancy a challenge and interested in running for Rockinghorse, they can complete the registration form attached or contact me if they require any further information. The 2015 Brighton Marathon takes place on the 12th of April and CLIC Sargent is offering places in this fantastic event (the 2nd largest in the UK!) for just 10 - that's a huge saving on the standard entry price! Every day 10 children are told the shocking news 'its cancer' so far we are able to help 1 in 3 of them. Our vision is to see a world where all children and young people with cancer live life to the full and the money raised by taking part in an event like this can help us get closer to that goal.

Would you be able to share this fantastic offer with members of the Crowborough Runners. I am hoping runners will be keen to take advantage of this reduced entry fee but would also like to raise some money to support families, who are dealing with the impact of cancer and its treatment. We are asking runners who sign up for one of our charity places to pledge to raise 500 in sponsorship. Please contact me if you would like any more information or click here to sign up!
