West Flanders Midsummer Night Races, Torhout, Belgium. June 20 th Five Crowborough runners joined 2,200 other runners in Flanders on Friday evening, June 20th, for their local town's running festival. There were 10K, Half and full marathons for over 200 runners plus 50K and 100K overnight walks. The Crows started the half marathon at 9 p.m. on a very warm and sunny evening in the extremely well organised race. The 'boro runners were able to warm up on a fully laid out all-weather track in the small Belgian town and then took on a very flat out and back course as the sun set over Flanders fields. The Crows were led home by Kevin Battell in followed by James Welbury, , Ian Gowing, , Tony Hufflett and Club Chairman John Tighe in The runners were then able to relax in the pleasant market town entertained by street bands and cheered in the marathon runners. Crowborough Runners will be back training on their old cinder track for a special training morning on Saturday, June 28th. We enjoyed a great weekend away with a bike ride into Ypres and many Belgian beers
The South Downs Way 100 mile Relay Saturday 7 th June 2014 Official report (The Courier) Crowborough Runners ladies team set off at 6am from Beachy Head on Saturday morning for the start of the 100 mile, Eastbourne to Winchester, South Downs Way relay event. The sky was black and the air humid as Mary Nightingale set off on leg 1 with Ian Gowing of the men s team not far behind on the 6.30 start. As the day unfolded the teams experienced electric storms, torrential rain and blistering heat. As they headed west to Jevington, through Alfriston, up to Ditchling Beacon and Devils Dyke, across the River Adur and past Chanctonbury Ring, climbed up Beacon Hill and Buster Hill, on to Old Winchester Hill and finally to the finish just outside Winchester they had collectively climbed and descended almost 3,500 meters in total. The men s team were on fine form knocking 30 minutes off last years time. The ladies all ran personal bests for their legs in the event but were hit by runner injury during leg 4. Undeterred they will be back in 2015 to have another go at this well organised, hugely challenging event across the beautiful countryside of Sussex and Hampshire. Ladies Team: Fran, Peri, Lydia, Audrey, Mary, Natalie The Ladies team started at 6am from Beachy Head. After storming runs from Audrey Mary and Lydia, Fran unfortunately ran into very serious difficulty on leg 4 from Itford Farm (see note from Fran below) and the weather turned very stormy at the same time. Fortunately Fran was rescued by a dog walker, and her husband set off to collect her, but it was a very anxious and sobering time for all of us. The Ladies team were knocked back but at Fran insistence they decided to continue the race skipping her legs. After some very down moments at Ditching Beacon in the cold, pouring rain the weather slowly improved throughout the day and the team ran exceptional times on all their relay legs all the way to Winchester. Mens Team: Tony, Dave (Potts), Loz, Kevin, Ian G, Gary C We had a run of injury at the last minute but luckily were able to recruit in some last minute replacements (thanks Ian, Loz, Tony!). Starting only 30 minutes behind the Ladies team we were still a little worried about catching them due to a very strong team they were putting out. Everyone ran steady without getting (too) lost and team morale stayed high in the bus With very strong runs from all the new boys (Gary, Dave, Loz) we finished in a decent time in fact the fastest for several years. We came 18 th out of 24 A teams in 13:15:24 A note from Fran: As many of you may know, I spoiled Crowborough Ladies chances of grinding the men s team into the dust on the South Downs Relay by collapsing on my first leg with hypoglycaemia. Hypoglycaemia is a rare condition in anyone without diabetes and happens when the blood is carrying too little glucose for the body s energy needs. (And yes, I had had breakfast!) In my case, it led me to veering about two miles off a route I ve run at least twice before and left me in the pouring rain in a patch of nettles on the side of a footpath just outside Saltdean, where I was rescued by a dog walker. I think I must have been out of it for about 30 minutes but I have no idea how I got there, and even less why I chose a nettle bed as a spot for a little rest. One thing that I m going to do as a result of this episode is to buy and wear a Cram tag. For 10 you get a bracelet with a 24-hour emergency number on it, which will enable anyone who finds you confused or unconscious through illness or accident to discover who you are, if you have any existing medical conditions, and get in touch with your next of kin. If you re a lone runner, or have any medical condition that could affect you (Dave H and bees, for example!), please think about getting one too. Fran

Polseden Lacey 10K - June 15th. I'm not sure which was harder. Taking on a typical eight course dinner (after a full cream tea and massive breakfast) as ordered by Mrs Greville for her numerous "society" guests in Edwardian times including Edward VIIth and his mistresses at the large property she owned or the hilly and somewhat muddy 10K in and around the grounds of the Polesden Lacey manor house. 'This is a delicious house...' remarked Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother on her honeymoon at Polesden Lacey. This country retreat has glorious views across the rolling Surrey Hills and acres of countryside. It was home to famous Edwardian hostess Mrs Greville, who entertained royalty and the celebrities of her time but on June 15th the National Trust allowed 400 runners to take on a tough trail race. The Trust advertises the fact that the wider estate provides "plenty of space to let off steam on a walk through woodland or over rolling hills, with four waymarked trails to try" but declines to mention the (almost) 600 feet of ascent and copious amounts of sticky mud on the 10K course. Great race though and well organised with good views, challenging hills, a fine, large medal and free Mars Bars at the end. James and John Dominique Pucker Pies Pluckey Pippa Purnell potted free pucker pie and peas after pushing perfect pace at Wigan 10K - only up north would you get a pie at the end of a race. J
Heathfield 10K, 22 nd June Crowborough Runners enjoyed a scenic and hilly run around the country lanes of Heathfield and Waldron in the Heathfield 10k, organised by Heathfield Runners on Sunday. Ron Cutbill was the first Crowborough man home in whilst Mary Nightingale led the ladies in at winning 1 st LV5, the 4th for her this season and a personal race best time. Peri Cheal was close on her heels at 49.59, 3 rd LV4. Mary Nightingale 47.45; Peri Cheal 49.59; Ron Cutbill 56.26; Louise Ellis 57.49; Swati Patel 57.49; Russell Taylor ; Chloe Kirkin ; Shelley Berry On the same day Crowborough lady, Sharon Wheeler, completed the Hackney half marathon in 2.09.

The Bewl 15, 6 th July Crowborough Runners fielded a strong team in the round Bewl 15 mile race on Sunday. Conditions were good and most of the team produced personal bests with Mary Nightingale coming in 2 nd LV5. Dan Aubrey led the team, breaking the 2 hour barrier with an excellent pb of Audrey Nioucel was the first Crowborough lady with a pb of Mary Nightingale 2.12.(pb); James Welbury 2.16; Alan Edney 2.18 (pb); Louise Ellis 2.23 (pb); Peter Maddison pos gun chip first last Category :54:38 01:54:28 Dan Aubrey M MS :04:10 02:03:45 Audrey Nioucel F FV :12:59 02:12:27 Mary Nightingale F FV :17:19 02:16:43 James Welbury M MV :18:55 02:18:18 Alan Edney M MV :24:08 02:23:35 Louise Ellis F FV :27:36 02:27:01 Peter Maddison M MV60
Windsor Tri - Olympic distance - 15th June 2014 Update from Gary Tri-Callaghan Hi Tony. I'm deep into triathlon season at the moment, so I thought I'd send you a race report of Windsor Tri - its naturally up to you as to whether you publish it or not - it does include running! Prelude With some gentle(-ish...) and careful persuasion the nice people at HumanRace Events finally agreed my request to register and rack my bike 3 hours after registration/racking technically closed at Windsor on Saturday afternoon. That allowed me just enough time to get there after the IronMan distance sea swim I did earlier that day in Arundel (no real running involved in that event - other than a short dash for the finish line after exiting the sea - so I won't include a race report on that, although I've included a pic as proof of some running in a wetsuit!). No less than a personal escort by security in the dark at Windsor transition area to rack up the bike & helmet. No markers allowed, naturally, so I put my bike directly under the huge sign that said Wave 19, being my wave start. I checked in at the hotel. It seems they slightly misunderstood my request for a quiet room...by putting me in a room right next to the wedding marquee where the DJ was doing an early sound check at 2 million decibels. It was tempting to join the party later on, but after a tiring day I thought some sleep would be a better idea. So I wangled a free upgrade to a junior suite in the quiet part, which was somewhat wasted on me as I was flying solo, but a result nonetheless. I nipped into Windsor for dinner and to buy porridge brekkie for the morning ahead. I'm not sure what happened to lunch, it sort of passed me by. I looked for an Italian restaurant, thinking of an easy pasta to carb load. Instead it seems I settled for some fabulous pan-seared scallops and smoked salmon to start, followed by seafood linguine on the riverside in the evening sun. The river looked as though it was moving quite a bit but I felt assured it would be slack and still by the time I'm in at 07.25hrs sharp the next morning (in 12 hours or so time)...or at least I hoped that water would be still. A fabulous dinner by the Thames as the sun went down. I'm sure I could be a professional carb loader. I sensibly resisted the wine list, which didn't look too bad actually. Even more sensibly I skipped watching the England versus Italy world cup footie game late that night and got my head down for a few zzz's before a 5.15am wakeup call Sunday morning. (It seems I didn t really miss anything terms of the football anyway England were a disaster!).
The day A clear morning with some cloud cover, nice temperature, I arrived and laid my kit out and chatted to a few competitors ahead of the swim. I also had a friendly chat with Nina the marshall, whom I recognised and remembered from Sevenoaks Tri. The swim Another pink swim hat - quite a weekend for those, my collection being seriously enhanced by a pink hat at the IronMan swim the day before. I joined the rest of the pinkies five minutes after the briefing, which would've been quite useful to have listened to on reflection... When they gave the 2 minute warning there was a mad rush to get into the water and I wondered why...being just 30 seconds behind the crowd meant that there was no more space on the little island adjacent to the start line to cling on to whilst in the Thames. So I found myself in the middle of the water having to swim at near 75% of my max just to stay still! - the current was soooo strong. The klaxon went, and so did I - as fast as I could muster. It was the strongest current I've ever swam against, the most crowded and aggressive start I've encountered and making progress was uber difficult, but I plugged away, the IronMan swim of the day before still in my mind, and to some extent still in my arms. It was tough but progress was being made. The turn-point up the river was carnage. The current was so strong that people were being dragged back short of the buoy as they tried to turn into and around it, and so they had to have two or three attempts to get around it. One swimmer had to be pulled out by the safety kayaker as it got too much for him and he started doing drowning type noises. I worked out that it was better to swim five metres past the melee and to slingshot around with the current, which I'm glad I did as it was getting very ugly around the turn buoy. The swim back with the strong current was awesome, and quite a relief after fighting against the Thames - undoubtedly my fastest swimming ever! Then I saw that we had to dog leg right to reach the exit area - maybe only 25metres upstream again but really quite some effort to reach the swim finish. Some guys were swimming but getting nowhere (a few were actually going backwards!) and so it was each man for himself in terms of swimming strongly enough to reach the exit pontoon and then clambering to get out. It seems that my training of pushing and shoving at London Bridge to get a seat on the train home paid off! I was out, hurrah, and started the rather long transition to the big sign, which I found with ease.
The bike Wow, what a treat, no hills to speak of, and no loops, just one flattish clear route. I was able to get to race pace pretty swiftly and kept up a decent momentum for the course. Amazing views, traffic controlled, well marshalled, and not too many pot holes. I caught up with one of the guys whom I'd met on the Bastion IronMan recce ride - from Medway Tri club - and we sparred for the last 20kms with five or so others. It only rained once, and I saw two guys who'd come off their bikes at different points in the wet, one of them was cruelly very close to the bike finish chute and looked in a lot of pain as the medic attended to him. I duly dismounted and another rather long transition back to sign nnnnnnnineteen. The run An unusual format, a bit of a satellite route, uphill to the gates of Windsor Castle, down into and through town, and a series of anticlockwise out & backs. A really nice supportive crowd throughout the course though and I felt ok. And then it was all over. My times were as follows- Swim - 30:53 Transition One - 02:37 Bike - 1:10:49 Transition Two - 2:16 Run - 44:20 Total 2:30:55 A PB for me. A highly enjoyable and well organised event. I've registered for Windsor next year already. What a fabulous weekend. An IronMan swim in the sea at Arundel on Saturday, a PB at Windsor Olympic Tri on Sunday morning, followed by a nice Thai lunch and a return home in time to watch the evening World Cup footie game. And two new pink swim hats to boot! What more can a boy ask for? Gary Callaghan
JUNIOR NEWS by Dave Hynes. Summer finally arrived after what seemed an eternity of rain (most of it seemed to be on the Crowborough Track!) and the Thursday Juniors turned out in force. It would appear that the moving of the Junior day from Tuesday to Thursday has made little difference to numbers and we seem to be getting an average of 35 at the sessions. Our spell at Beacon school will be ending this week (July 10) and then it will be back to Goldsmiths track up until the end of August. The Junior Crows Saturday Athletes are going from strength to strength and on Tuesday June 3 rd we had our first club outing to Tonbridge Open Meeting. All athletes competed in the 800m with 7PBs and a win in one of the heats. Given that this was the first meeting for many of the athletes everybody did extremely well and did the club proud. Results:- U13 Boys George Coleman 3:02 Elliott Keen 3:01 Connor Parker 2:59 Rory Gallagher 2:52 McKinley Loxton- Read 2.50 Rory Sturgeon 2:40. However Alicia did manage to participate in the Long Jump and put in a solid 3m.30. (This may be a good opportunity to remind athletes/parents to try and get to races/meeting in plenty of time so that athletes can sign in and do their warm up!)
Alicia and Maddie were the first girls to represent the club at these meetings. They both did exceptionally well and we do hope more girls will follow their example. Well done Alicia and Maddie!! Our next visit to Tonbridge will be on Tuesday 5 th August. If anybody has any spare time to help with the Juniors then please contact myself or Katerina. Lastly a big thanks to Roger, Mary, Sharon and Kev for helping out when we most needed you-much appreciated.! Dave - Head Junior Coach

Sunday Runs and Water Rota - May 2014 If you have been a member of Crowborough Runners for a while, you will no doubt know all about the water rota. But we are delighted that we have quite a number of new members of the club (welcome to all of you) and so bear with us while we explain the system again. We ask all members to take their turn on the water rota (rota for 2014 is below). It involves driving your car round to provide water for those doing the club run on a Sunday morning and also giving a lift back to anyone who is unable to complete the training run. It normally takes 2 hours but sometimes a bit more. Water equipment is provided (container and plastic cups) and someone on the run will organise the route and agree with you the meeting places for water so all you need to do is: if you cannot make the date you have been allocated, please arrange to swap dates with someone else arrange with the previous person on the list to collect the water kit from them make sure the container is clean and fill it up with water beforehand turn up at the start of the run (mostly 8:30am from the leisure centre) drive to each of the meeting points and hand out water to the runners when they arrive the optional purchase of a packet of jelly babies to offer to runners with the water is much appreciated hand over the water kit to the next person on the list We are trying to ensure that the Sunday runs are suitable for everyone, varying the type of course (on road and off road) and length. The traditional length is 10 miles, but there will be some 6 and 8 mile routes as well as some optional add-ons for those who want to run further, particularly during the spring marathon training season. Can faster runners please note that you should run back to behind the slowest runner from time to time to allow re-grouping. This is particularly true at water stops where runners should arrive together so everyone can have time to take a drink and the same amount of rest before setting off again. This means everyone runs for the same amount of time, with faster runners covering more distance. Obviously if runners want to run for a longer time than the normal 1½ - 2 hours, they will have to the extra time without the group in these cases, it makes sense to ask around and arrange to buddy with someone else who is also doing a longer run. The club Sunday runs are not held on the days of popular races (Sussex Grand prix races, East Sussex cross country league, London and Brighton Marathon) so there are about 30 each year, which means your turn only comes round every months. If for any reason you cannot or are not willing to take part in the rota, you must let Bryan and Roger know so that we can take you off the list. Thanks to everyone for participating. It makes Sunday runs more sociable and enjoyable, helps beginners to build up their distances and more experienced runners to put in some solid training. If you have any questions, please contact either of us. Bryan and Roger

You may remember I was in touch last year about a study I was conducting at the University of Brighton concerning techniques to help people when running in hot and humid conditions. Thank you again for your help in passing on the details, a lot of people got in touch and the study was a success. The study was recently presented at an international conference in Qatar & two papers are currently being reviewed for publication in a scientific journal. I am about to begin my next PhD study and I hope you do not mind me being in touch again to see if any of your male runners would be interested in participating. This study is examining a blood flow restriction technique that may benefit endurance performance in the heat. Initially I am targeting runners who can run 5km in <22 minutes or 10km <45 minutes. This study will involve just 3 visits (separated by 1 week) and I will again provide a comprehensive physiological report upon completion. This will include personalised training zones as well as identification of their lactate threshold, maximum oxygen consumption (V0 2 max), running economy and body fat percentage amongst other parameters. Many of these markers are trainable and as a result elite athletes would typically complete these tests every 3 months to track progress. The feedback I have received suggests people found this very useful for their training last time around. As before, whilst working hours are preferable, I will try my upmost to accommodate evening and weekend testing. Anyone interested please contact Carl for more information (c.james2@brighton.ac.uk / ). Many thanks, Carl James MSc BSc (Hons) MPhil/PhD Student Exercise in Extreme Environments Research Group School of Sport and Service Management University of Brighton Welkin Laboratories Denton Road Eastbourne East Sussex BN20 7SR
5. Mud and obstacle run East Grinstead Our event is called Mud Monsters Run, it will be a mud and obstacle run of 5k or 10k (runners can sign up for either distance) in East Grinstead on 12 October We are really excited about this run and it should be good fun for all the participants. We currently have early bird prices from just 23 per person for anyone who books before midnight 30 June 2014 and an extra 10% per person discount for teams of 5 or more people. There will be chip timing on the day, a photographer to capture all those muddy moments, St Johns on hand just in case, food and drink on site and plenty to keep spectators busy. Bookings can be made through our website - and we also have a Facebook page where some of our obstacles already under construction can be previewed. Becky E - info@mudmonstersrun.co.uk M
Minutes of Crowborough Runners Committee Meeting Thursday 8 th May at Ghyll Crest, Ghyll Road, Crowborough. Present: Kevin Battell, James Welbury, Roger Stone, Sharon Wheeler, Sarah Hilliard, Ron Cutbill, Andy Parkin 1. Apologies: Received from John Tighe, Ian Gowing Action 2. Minutes of the meeting 16 th January: Accepted as a true record 3. Matters arising: Andy reported that Dave Hynes had confirmed that the junior membership fee at 20 was sensible in view of the coach input to the junior section. Other items dealt with under main agenda items. 4. Chairman s report: Nothing to report at this meeting 5. Treasurer s report: Sarah reported that the Reserve Account now stood at 5000 and the current account at p.However the England Athletics athlete affiliation cheque of 510 was outstanding. A number of grants had been received including junior athlete section grants from Wealden DC ( 500). (Andy mentioned he would contact Dave AP regarding use of the grant in terms of targeting it at coaching support). A grant has also been received from the Sussex Athletics network (via Beacon school). This grant had been used for coaching costs for Level 2 qualifications. Junior subscriptions were being paid in currently. A subsidy of 30 per head was agreed for South Downs relay costs. TH Sarah mentioned that she had investigated Charity Status for the Club with a helpful accountant. After discussion it was agreed that it would be preferable to seek charity SH/JW status for particular projects (e.g. Track redevelopment) 6. Secretary s report: Agreed that the AGM would be 7.30pm for 8pm on Thursday 25 th AP September at the WI Hall in Ghyll Road. Andy requested that further info be posted on the Club notice board at Goldsmith s. Keys All held by Kevin and Andy and one by Freedom Leisure. 7. Membership Secretary: Ron reported that no new members had joined in last few months. His spreadsheet showed 73 paid up members (59 competitive and 14 noncompetitive). Ron recognised that more work was required to reconcile the England RC Athletics records with his spreadsheet. 8. Captain s report. Sharon said that ideally all club kit should be routed via her for consistency. This ensured that the right overprinting of the vests would take place. Unfortunately there seemed to have been some confusion over ordering junior vests. Sharon agreed to let Andy have the dimensions of the Trophy cabinet that was currently stored in her garden shed. He would speak to Dave Foot of the Town council to see if the cabinet could be displayed in the Town Hall. Wednesday night runs were going well with the various pace groups but problems still occurred with Sunday runs with some members being left struggling with pacing. A discussion ensued as to how to ensure all Sunday runners could stay together without the slower runners feeling pressured e.g. faster runners loop back occasionally to run behind the slower runners, run with a buddy etc K report. Kevin stated that he would proceeding with a number of issues in the next few weeks:- Beacon booking, Further sponsorship to be sought, (Sharon to contact Phillip Mann shop), Horder Centre (James to contact), Rugby and football clubs to be contacted re warning re race/ possible road closures, consideration to be given to possible road closures (?Palesgate/Green Lane), 10K committee meeting, further efforts to be given to disposing of old 10k T shirts. Date set for 30/11/14, similar entry fee to Sarah reported that the Lions had been paid for 2013 and that the final 2013 profit was All/DH SW AP RS/BT KB/SW JW KB
approximately Welfare and child protection officer. Nothing to report in the meeting see below 11. Social Secretary. Ian had advised that the minibuses for London and Brighton Marathons had been well used and the total cost to the Club was 135. Further consideration was being given to a round Tunbridge Wells walk/run and a Club quiz night. James requested that consideration be given in 2015 to obtaining a pass for the Brighton marathon minibus to allow access to near the race start. The Wednesday night pub runs had started and the first one was well supported. 12. Cross Country Manager. Nothing to report in the meeting - see below 13. Road Running Manager. Roger said that he had forwarded the up to date statement on the Club championship to Tony for inclusion the newsletter. Kevin and Anna led currently. Roger was still debating whether to target certain Grand Prix races and encourage club support (particularly in 2015 as there were a number of newer Club members who could really make an impact on the Grand Prix competition). A number of forthcoming races were now being highlighted on the Club s Facebook page. Further debate took place on the format of the Club handicap. Roger mentioned that he was considering 2 dates- 1 track event and 1 road event, with runners needing to run in both to qualify for the handicap. 14. Development Officer. James mentioned that there was a need a further Coach to help with the Beginners Group. (Leadership and Running Fitness). Ideally further Level 2 coaches were needed but it was recognised that a lot of work was required to achieve the qualification. The beginners group was going well and now ran from 7-8pm on Monday. James reminded the committee that another Club coaching session had been arranged for Saturday 28th June at 10am with Nick Anderson. Andy and James reported on the track refurbishment discussions. 3 quotes had been received 1 for a tarmac option and 2 for a two lane tartan option. A meeting was to be held between the Club, Town council, Freedom Leisure, Wealden DC and England Athletics reps. It would be essential to obtain grant aid to progress the scheme. 15. Newsletter Nothing to report at this meeting. 16. AOB. Ron agreed to contact Dave Hynes regarding the Junior grant received from Wealden D.C. A Crowborough newsletter was anxious to publicise the grant. Mention was made of using some Club funds (up to 1000) for investment in premium bonds. This was in view of the low levels of interest received on bank deposits. Sarah to investigate whether this was a feasible proposition in terms of investment. Club coaches to be requested to provide extra Thursday night support to the Junior section if requested by Dave Hynes/ Katerina Clarke. The idea of a rota rather like the Water rota was proposed. In view of Junior section developments, Dave Hynes to be asked to join the Committee? IG IG? RS RS All JW/AP RC SH All AP 17. Date of next meeting: 4 th September at 8pm at Sarah s house ( 90 Millbrook Road) All Welfare and Child Protection Officer: Nicky reported after the meeting that she is still waiting for people to send in copies of their DBS Certs and licence details for the register. Further reminder required
Cross Country Manager: Bryan reported after the meeting that the East Sussex cross country AGM will be held on September 3 rd and he will represent the club. Ashdown forest (our race) will be included again this year after last years rest. This is in line with the agreed rota system of using six of the eight available race venues each year. Provisional dates for the first two races are: October 12 th November 9 th Warren Hill Firle The remaining dates to be decided at the AGM

It pays to keep fit in Russia Russia s Alfa Bank has introduced a scheme called Activity which offers preferential interest rates to customers who exercise. Every time the user exercises, money is transferred from their current account to a special account with a higher interest rate of 6% a rate only available using this scheme. The scheme is compatible with the Jawbone UP and Fitbit fitness trackers and the RunKeeper Pro app, which need to be connected to an existing Alfa account. Money is paid per metre travelled at rates between 1-50 US cents, selectable using the dedicated Activity software. At the end of the run, money corresponding to the distance travelled is transferred into the special-interest account. So the more you move, the more money you ll make. Since the scheme launched Alfa Bank claims customers are saving twice as fast and walking one-and-a-half times more than average.
