1 THE CROWBOROUGH RUNNER July 2013 The Better Late than Never Issue Summer is here! Hello Campers. So much happening, 10ks, all the summer classics, relays have been run, Club Championships and Handicaps A question: Sunday runs how can we get more people coming along? Remember there is free water provided every 2-3 miles, the pace is slow and there is always an option to run less distance via a shorter loop or a return in the water car. Usually run are 8-10 miles, sometimes longer in the autumn and spring, but there are always shorter options. 8:30am start Sunday. COME ALONG! Reach me at tony@hufflett.com. Let us all know what you ve been up to RACE REPORTS: if in doubt send me a note, we d love to hear how things went- I am missing a lot of recent races unfortunately Tony Next Issue: early Sept (start of every odd month)

2 EVENTS PAST... Rye 10 Miles 26 th May 2013 I really enjoyed this race, I hope my comments will bring more Crows next year. I'll definitely run it again. It's located in Peasmarsh (4 miles from Rye). The start and finish is from a large car park, just next to a pub where you register. The pub as a good size garden with children playground and bouncy castle (went down a treat with my boys!) The route is undulating most of the time and hilly (challenging ones) a few times, all of it on small country lanes with stunning countryside views and cooling wooded areas. I loved the fact that it is a small race, it feels very friendly and at the finish there are water and cereal bars, fruits etc. I saw James, John and Swati at the start and finish (it's a SGP race by the way!) My time was much better than I thought it would be (1:14:23 and I was aiming for 1h20). As the weather was lovely on that day we went to Camber afterwards and enjoy the dunes and the beach. Really good day overall. The only downer is the price: 20 quid as I entered on the day! Audrey Only 4 Crows took on the challenging Rye ft of climbing but a lovely course around undulating county roads with little traffic. Nice Works chip timing failed so results only provisional. James Audrey - a great John James Swati PB (Swati's first well done) Great for SGP points

3 Bedgebury 10k (Saturday June 8th) This one is totally the opposite to Rye: a massively marketed race, sponsored by Runners World, Rat Race and Helly Hansen. There were lots of different waves. It felt that the target is Londoners who need a bit of greenery and country side feeling (definitely not for locals!) I was in the first wave. The atmosphere at the start was really "flat". The course was undulating to hilly and tough on the ankles. I started too fast and was really aware of it by 4km! I managed to finish in 45min 34 sec, which is quite slower than what I was dreaming of, but it got me 4th place in ladies overall (gutted as there are prices for first 3!) The price is 30! That gets you a t-shirt and water bottle (lots of samples too) and free parking at Bedgebury (not in main car park though). Audrey

4 South Downs Way Relay As ever a great, full-length, full-on day out (4:30a.m. till midnight). A fantastic performance from the Crowborough Ladies team. Congratulations to them for an excellent consistent, well-organised run. The Men s team also finished without getting lost so twin successes this year The Men s team were so fearful of the strength and preparation of the Ladies that they gave them only 1/2 hour start this year. And they still couldn t catch them up. Crowborough Ladies team: 14h 19m 54s (Fran, Audrey, Louise, Mary, Lydia, Peri) Crowborough Mens team: 14h 8m 31s (Kevin, Dave, Roger, Ian, Tony, Scott) Big thanks to driver/navigators: Clare, Sarah, Ron, Ian and Marshalls: Maggi, Dominique

9 The Midsummer Madness TW Circular A special mention to Sarah, Mary and Peter who stayed with me to complete the 27.2 mile course in 8hrs 24mins (excluding the lunch stop) climbing a total elevation of 722m Chloe, Maggi and Bryan joined us for an eventful first half jog. And our better halfs - Joy, Denise and Roger N made great company walking the 2nd half with us! A great challenge and day out - perfect weather and wonderful scenery. Ian

10 Tromso - 70 Degrees North (Midnight Sun Marathon) At the risk of misquoting Charlie Crocker in the Italian Job, when I said to Dominique I'd love to do a midsummer marathon, I said a couple of years ago, "Hang on, I've got a great idea". And as Norwegian airlines now do a direct flight to just over 200 miles north of the arctic circle, I booked cheap flights to Tromso and places in the Midsummer Night Marathon and Half Marathon for us. I'd forgotten to tell Dom who rang me up from work one day when she said "why have I got an from a Norwegian man saying I'm running 13 miles at midnight!?" Anyway, with the travelling Welbury's bags packed and 2500 kilometres later we settled into our room in Tromso and tried to sleep with eyecovers given the 24 hour daylight up there in the summer. See: (See the large bridge in the picture - the marathon takes you over that twice!) The weather was surprisingly mild due to the gulfstream and was about 16 degrees with some sun most days. Tromso is on an island about the size of Alderney (and with as many heavy drinkers!) with a huge bridge linking it over fjords on both sides and with spectacular views over the surrounding snow capped mountains with the air as clean as you can get. Race reg was a simple affair but a bunch of French runners seemed to take delight in pushing and shoving to get race T- shirts!! The whole town had supporters out with a junior mile at 6pm, a 10K going off at 7pm, the marathon at 8.30 and the half at So what to eat and when, having never run past midnight, so pasta it was the night before, then at lunchtime, then porridge about 5 pm with a jacket potato - seemed to work OK. (Jah, potata stompe, takk* - that's as far as my Norwegian goes). Otherwise, it would be fish, fish and fish (I avoided whale meat steaks though) All the races started in the old town amongst colourful wood bedecked houses with plenty of supporters all around the course encouraging you on waving their Norwegian flags, even after midnight. After a mile and a bit we climbed up a long steep drag over the main bridge (4000 ft long, max height 270ft, Ian) then down, past the arctic cathedral and along the fjord side with superb views on a first "out and back" loop of 13 miles. Back over the bridge and round the town along Ingrid Kristianson way and Grete Waitz avenue past the Roald Amundsen statue then along the eastern shores of the Tromso island past the site where the RAF sank the Tirpitz ( thinking I'd better not point it out to the many German runners on the course). Another out and back loop with good views through a Norwegian Wood. Nice to see lots of younger runners including plenty young scandwegian lasses who looked very fit. After about 15 / 16 miles I heard quick footsteps then the lead runners in the half went past me as the second loop is for both marathon and the half. A bit of light rain and drizzle in the second half which cooled us down. I didn't really feel like we were running so late, until about mile 23 (when the wheels came off)!! On the way back in the last six I saw Dom on the other side of the road near the halfway point of the half looking good (unlike me at that point). It was great to see the finish, then to wait for Dom in the Town Hall who got round so well - what an experience. Thought about a beer after the race as I didn't think I could afjord it but I had one anyway - 8 (yes EIGHT QUID!) Next year I'm thinking about going a little further north to Svalbard, the islands about 500 miles north of Tromso. The weather up there can be a bit tricky but the main risk is polar bears (don't believe me? see - ) I imagine The requirement to arm local men and women with bolt-action rifles slung around "Isbjørnvakt" vests on ATVs along 21km of the Svalbard marathon course categorically adds a high level of intrigue to any given Saturday. 17 Land s End to John O Groats Carol and I recently swapped our running shoes for bicycles as we took on the challenge of riding from Lands End to John O Groats which given that we were going the pretty way was 1020 miles in 2 weeks, an average of around 70 miles per day on the hybrid bikes we bought locally from Wealden Cycles as we wanted comfort rather than the speed of our lightweight carbon road bikes. We did it with a travel company that gave full support such as accommodation booking, luggage transport from place to place, mechanical back up, refreshment van, maps, briefings you name it they did it and it s just as well as I had 4 punctures and Carol one! We trained very hard in the 3 months leading up to the onslaught on our legs that we knew it would be so didn t get much running done as we were doing mile rides on both Saturdays and Sundays (starting at 6 am!) as well as milers on Mondays and Wednesdays. The ride itself was a terrific experience and one that we ll treasure for the rest of our lives, it was tough, painful on the legs (and bums!) but great fun every day with fantastic scenery and the feeling we got when we rode into John O Groats at 4:30 pm on Saturday the 6th of July was worth everything we d put into it and boy oh boy did we put a lot into getting up some of those hills! There were 25 in our group all of whom were great characters and good fun to be with as we all set out together each morning at around 8:30 am. The normal routine was to stop mid-morning for tea/coffee/tons of food at the Brew van driven by one of the 3 support staff then on to lunch at a pub, café or restaurant where a prearranged buffet would be ready. After that it was the Brew van again mid-afternoon then onto our destination for that evening where we d all go to a pre booked restaurant/pub etc. or sometimes just got take away food from a Co-op type place and into bed by 10pm as we were both pretty well Zonked by then. Physically we found that our running and rowing fitness gave us plenty of aerobic ability to cope and were never really tested in that department, certainly nothing like the way you feel at the end of a half marathon/10k type of race it was more the burning sensation in the legs which hurt at the end of the first day but didn t seem to get any worse..although they didn t get any better either! Now that we re back we re doing our best to get back into our normal running and rowing routine but given the amount of weight I put on with all that scoffing (not just on the ride but in the months leading up to it) and our lack of any running at all we re struggling quite a bit but hanging on in there so should be ready for the cross country season and Sid s track sessions even if we re a lot further back than usual.but hopefully that won t be for long. 21 Club Championship Update In the ladies' championship, Audrey has leapt into the lead, while Fran is now in 1st place in the FV45 category. In the men's, Peter has now posted a complete set of times to lead the MV60 category. It remains tight in at the top of the men's competition and in the ladies V45 and V55 categories. With a number of people only needing only a time at one more distance to complete their set (10K for Ian G ; 10M for Louise, Dave H and Pippa ; half marathon for Clare P. and Alan) there could also be some new contenders coming into play. Please note that updated tables with results from all races to date have been added to the website. You only have until 31st August to record or improve your times for this year s championship. The results so far are:

22 The Club Handicap The handicap mile has now been run 6 times. Maybe it is overkill on my part to organise so many, but the idea has been to allow runners to see if they are improving month by month and everyone will have a final chance to check their times on Tuesday August 27th and/or Wednesday 28th August. Twelve people ran one of the July miles leading to significant change in positions for the men. Despite his whinging over the handicap, Ashley has leapt into a significant lead after finishing in 6:30 it is good to see him getting back into some form after his injuries. Ron is now in equal third after cracking the 7 minute barrier. In the ladies race, Louise has increased her lead, having run faster times each month so far. Others to have improved are Clare Styles and Mary in the ladies and Ashley, Ron, Jay and Gary for the men. Note that the results show everyone who has competed, including some who are not club members. Of course, only club members can win one of the awards and I will only include members in the final official results. 24 Crowborough 10K donation helps save lives On the 5 th of June Sarah and I travelled to the headquarters of the Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS) Air Ambulance Trust at Marden in Kent. We were representing Crowborough Runners as the Lions handed over a cheque for 500 to support the fantastic work of the trust in saving lives. Every year the Lions help out with marshalling at our 10K and we give them a donation out of our profits. This was 300 last year and made up the bulk of the money donated by the Lions on the day, though the Lions are aiming to raise 50K for the KSS Air Ambulance overall. Some of the things we learnt about the KSS Air Ambulance really surprised us It depends entirely on fund-raising and receives no money from the NHS The service provides not just speedy transport but potentially life-saving care for critically ill and injured patients, including some procedures normally only carried out in hospitals - general anaesthesia, advanced pain relief and even occasionally surgery If bad weather grounds one of the helicopters (based at Marden and Redhill) then the highly trained team will often go to an emergency by car since they can provide more specialist skills than ordinary ambulances in emergencies such as road accidents The helicopters can reach any part of Sussex, Kent or Surrey in 20 minutes and then get an injured patient to a major trauma unit in the same time They have already flown over 700 missions this year It needs to raise about 5M every year to support its operations This year it needs 0.5M more to extend its service from daytime to 24 hrs a day We were lucky to meet some of the highly skilled Specialist Doctors and Critical Care Paramedics in the team and to look over one of the impressively equipped helicopters. It is good to know that money raised from the 10K is going to such a good cause.

26 CLUB NOTICES From Andy Parkin, Club Secretary 1. Dear Club Secretaries, Please can you circulate this information to your members :- The Sussex Athletics Network are seeking applications for roles in two of their main projects. An Activator is required, starting in early September, to progress the School / Clubs Link project to the next phase. The aim of the project is to develop closer links between a selection of Sussex Athletics Clubs and Schools. The research stage of this project has already been completed, and a plan produced with proposals for delivery of the next phase. An athletic minded person is being sought to carry out the task of organising four Sussex Squad Days between October 2013 and March There is significant background information and data available to assist in the organisation, as well as administrative assistance. The attached documents give further information about the roles and application details. I can e mail you the documents if you are interested (parkin_a@sky.com) Many thanks. Dawn Piechoczek. Sussex Athletics Network Administrator 2. I am the race organiser for the Lewes Downland 10 and would appreciate your help with publicising our race. As a fellow League member a number of your club runners would likely race in this event and I wondered if you would be able to put details of the Downland 10 onto your website fixtures page and/or mail out entry details to your membership? The race is held on 6th October this year and offers a main 10 mile event - which is part of the Sussex Grand Prix series - with a 5 mile support race. Both races are run over the Downs taking in part of the South Downs Way. For regular entrants to the Grand prix series, this race is one of the 2 10 mile events that are necessary to score. I attach the race details for your general info. Our race HQ is the local school and has m/f changing, with bag storage facilities, and loos together with free parking. Refreshments are available and medals are awarded for various categories of winners. Webpage link ; I very much hope that you can put our race up on your pages and please don't hesitate to ask if you would like us to do the same. Kind regards Beverly Sheridan Race organiser

27 3. Hospice in the Weald 10k race We are desperately looking for helpers to marshal our 10K race and help out at our family fun day on the 15 th of September, I was wondering whether it would be possible for you to relay this to your runners via your newsletter & website? They can contact me either via Telephone: or my address: Helen.Wade@hospiceintheweald.org.uk. If any of your runners are interested in signing up to either the 10K race, they can also contact me, there will also be a 1K fun run and panto horse race, with lots of fun activities on the day for friends and families. I would greatly appreciate any help you are able to offer us so we can continue holding such events to support the hospice. Many Thanks Helen Wade Events & Fundraising Intern

28 Crowborough Runners Committee Meeting Minutes for meeting held on 20 th May at 8pm at The Laurels Present John Tighe, Tony Hufflett, Sarah Hilliard, Sharon Wheeler, Roger Stone, Ron Cutbill, Andy Parkin, Ian Gowing Action by 1. Apologies: Received from Julie Harker, James Welbury, Bryan Tapsell, Kevin Battell 2. Minutes of the Committee meeting 17 th January accepted as a true record 3. Matters Arising It was noted that the post of press officer was still vacant. This was despite appeals in the newsletter and requests at the AGM for volunteers to fill the post. The Committee agreed as a workaround to link sections of the bi monthly newsletter to the Crowborough Runners website. This could be a means of recruiting new members and would provide up to date news on the website. 4. Chairman s report. John said that he would raise his items under AOB. 5. Treasurer s report. Sarah stated that the current account balance stood at 3585 after allowing for unpresented cheques. South downs relay subsidy costs were still to come. The Reserve account balance stood at The England Athletics affiliation fee for the Club had been paid along with the individual competing athlete s fee of 10 /head. (54 members paid up to date). Ron and Sarah to liaise regarding further individuals who may want to compete for the Club. Andy undertook to check with the London Marathon organisers as to the lower limit on Club numbers for 2 London Marathon places. Sarah reported that the junior athletes fees to date for 2013 had been 460 with further fees still to come. There was the possibility of further grant funding from SE Water. James/ Dominique to confirm. Tony requested on behalf of the 10k Committee that Sarah provide a breakdown of the 10k income and expenditure for 2012 race. As the Committee was aware from recent s, Sarah had liaised on behalf of the Club with the Crowborough Lions about the use of the Club donation to them of 300 from 10k For the record, the monies will be topped up by the Lions to 500 and will be awarded to the Kent& Sussex Air Ambulance Appeal and a joint cheque presentation is arranged for 5 June. 6. Secretary s report The AGM was agreed for Monday 23 rd September 7.30pm for 8pm, with the WI Hall in Ghyll Road being hired from 7pm to 10.30pm. SEAA Cross Country championships forms had been received and were to be passed to Dave Hynes and Bryan Tapsell. 7. Membership secretary s report. Ron said that the England Athletics site had been updated and reconciled to his membership records. There had been a number of new members in recent months. He reported that certain members had not yet paid their subs for 2012/2013. If fees were not paid soon then membership would be withdrawn. It was suggested that the membership form should be updated for the next year to show what proportion of the membership fee was related to the England Athletics affiliation fee. It was agreed that fees for the next year would be set at the committee meeting in September, but provisionally were to be 26 for competing members and 15 for non-competing members. (The England Athletics affiliation fee for Club members was likely to be 11 per athlete from April 2014). Andy to check with England athletics just before the RS/TH RC/SH AP JW SH AP AP RC RC AP RC

29 AGM that the fee for 2014 was fixed at 11. Tony asked that Ron advise him of new members names. 8. Captain s report Sharon said that there would be a ladies and men s team for the South Downs Relay, although there had been a number of injury problems for the men s team. Minibus availability would be confirmed. Wednesday night runs had been well supported, but numbers attending on Sunday had been lower. Ian reported that there would be further Wednesday night pub runs, with the next one possibly being from Penns in the Rocks. 9. Social Secretary s report Ian reported on the success of the recent pub runs. The use of minibuses for the London and Brighton Marathon had reduced the subsidy from the Club to 85 Ian asked for suggestions for the Xmas meal venue. Mark Cross Inn was suggested. All committee members were asked to send any ideas to Ian Ian said that he would be organising a long distance walk on the 30 th June, around the boundary of Tunbridge Wells (27 miles). Those taking part could walk all or part of the distance. Parts of the distance could be run, and there would be a pub stop for lunch. 10. Cross Country Manager s report Bryan had advised that there was nothing to report. The Committee agreed that the Club would support an event organised by the East Sussex Cross country League at an Ashdown Forest venue if this was required. 11. Road Running Manager s report Roger reported that in the recent Club handicap event, there had been 20 competitors. Further handicap events were scheduled for May, June and the end of August. Mention had been made of a handicap event of a longer distance. Agreed that this would be discussed at the AGM in September. In terms of the Club Championship, Roger asked for Committee agreement to award a MV60 cup. Agreed unanimously. A proposal was discussed, to target certain SGP races as this would fit well with an option to link the Club Championship or the Club handicap to these events. Mention was made of races such as the Heathfield 10K, Bexhill 5 K, and Lewes Downland. Roger agreed to look into how feasible it would be to use age related running tables to standardise and compare different times by different members of the Club where the runners were of different ages. If this were possible, these races could be used for the Club Handicap. 12. Club Development Manager s report James had asked for agreement to arrange another Nick Anderson coaching event. The committee agreed this. In view of the Wadhurst Runners coaching session in June it was suggested Nick should be invited to provide a session in the Autumn. ( 5 charge proposed). As one of the Olympic Legacy events, the London 2012 committee was promoting a Join in Athletics campaign in the period 27 th July to 9 th September. It was suggested this could provide a good forum for a further Club come and meet the Runners event k Race issues Kevin had provided a written report. Sharon reported that at an initial meeting with Beacon School, the School had requested that additional Porta Loos be provided as toilet facilities in the main site in the 2012 event had proved inadequate in the view of the School. Further discussion to take place with the school. Sharon confirmed that the hire agreement with the school included all car parking on the main Beacon site. TH/IG All IG BT RS/AP RS RS JW JW KB

30 It seemed likely that the 10k Committee would ensure that on line entries could be accepted up to say the Friday before the race. 14. Newsletter Tony thanked all those who posted items for the bi monthly newsletter into Dropbox. He asked for further Race reports for future issues. Following discussion under matters arising Tony said he would be happy to link all or part of the newsletter to Face book. 15. Junior Section developments Dave Hynes had asked for this item to be deferred. The Tuesday night coaching sessions had been very well attended with up to 50 children registered with Junior section. Sharon asked for guidance about ordering club vests for Juniors. At present small adult vests were ordered. Katerina Clarke was asked to e mail parents of junior athletes to ascertain how many juniors would want vests and what sizes were required. Sharon would confirm with the supplier as to what sizes were available. Sharon reminded the committee that Philip Mann shop supplied senior/junior hoodies to the Club 16. Club Welfare and child protection policy issues. Julie had complained that she was not receiving copies of CRB forms when they were returned after checking. Andy agreed to check with EA as to the routing of these forms. Elaine Taylor had asked for the Committee to consider including a possible future requirement for Club members to consider voluntarily undertaking CRB checks. The Committee recognised that the procedure set down by England Athletics was for all those undertaking coaching courses to have CRB (now DBS checks) checks funded by EA, but not for Club athletes in general. Sarah reminded the Committee that where there was any suggestion of an adult considering undertaking coaching with the juniors, not being prepared to undertake a CRB check, then that person would not be able to undertake any coaching. 17. AOB Allocation of London and Brighton Marathon places. It was resolved that in future there would be no reserves drawn for the Club places but if the nominated runner had to withdraw then this had to be declared 2 weeks before the deadline date and a further draw would take place for the available Club place. Check to be made with London as to the deadline for 2014 and with Brighton on the organisers policy on deferred Club places. Where additional Brighton Marathon places were achieved because the Club had helped with baggage duty then these would be ring-fenced to the helpers. Mention was made of a Club ladies trip to the Frankfurt Marathon. 18. WITNESS: Did you actually pass the bar exam? ATTORNEY: The youngest son, the 20-year-old, how old is he? WITNESS: He's 20, much like your IQ. ATTORNEY: Were you present when your picture was taken? WITNESS: Are you shitting me? ATTORNEY: So the date of conception (of the baby) was August 8th? WITNESS: Yes. ATTORNEY: And what were you doing at that time? WITNESS: Getting laid ATTORNEY: She had three children, right? WITNESS: Yes. ATTORNEY: How many were boys? WITNESS: None. ATTORNEY: Were there any girls? WITNESS: Your Honor, I think I need a different attorney. Can I get a new attorney? ATTORNEY: How was your first marriage terminated? WITNESS: By death.. ATTORNEY: And by whose death was it terminated? WITNESS: Take a guess. ATTORNEY: Can you describe the individual? WITNESS: He was about medium height and had a beard ATTORNEY: Was this a male or a female? WITNESS: Unless the Circus was in town I'm going with male.

34 ATTORNEY: Is your appearance here this morning pursuant to a deposition notice which I sent to your attorney? WITNESS: No, this is how I dress when I go to work. ATTORNEY: Doctor, how many of your autopsies have you performed on dead people? WITNESS: All of them. The live ones put up too much of a fight. ATTORNEY: ALL your responses MUST be oral, OK? What school did you go to? WITNESS: Oral... ATTORNEY: Do you recall the time that you examined the body? WITNESS: The autopsy started around 8:30 PM ATTORNEY: And Mr. Denton was dead at the time? WITNESS: If not, he was by the time I finished. ATTORNEY: Are you qualified to give a urine sample? WITNESS: Are you qualified to ask that question? And last: ATTORNEY: Doctor, before you performed the autopsy, did you check for a pulse? WITNESS: No. ATTORNEY: Did you check for blood pressure? WITNESS: No. ATTORNEY: Did you check for breathing? WITNESS: No.. ATTORNEY: So, then it is possible that the patient was alive when you began the autopsy? WITNESS: No. ATTORNEY: How can you be so sure, Doctor? WITNESS: Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar. ATTORNEY: I see, but could the patient have still been alive, nevertheless? WITNESS: Yes, it is possible that he could have been alive and practicing law.

36 Water Rota and Sunday Runs All Crowborough members are asked to take their turn doing the water duty on Sunday club runs. For those who do not know this takes 2-3 hours on a Sunday morning, and with the current number of runners, your turn only comes up about once every two years. The duty involves: Obtaining the water kit from the person before you on the list Checking that the water container(s) are clean they should be sterilized about once a month Filling the container(s) up with water. [Providing a packet of jelly babies is also very welcome] Driving round the course and stopping every few miles at points agreed with the runners to pour out glasses of water for them Carrying any spare layers of clothing that the runners want to put on or take off during the run as well looking after any valuables (e.g. car keys) that runners do not want to carry Transporting back to the finish any runners who cannot manage to run the whole way and who need a lift Making sure to pass the equipment onto the next person on the list Swapping your duty with another club member if you cannot make your allotted date The list for Sundays during 2013 is shown below. Note that we do not have a water car on days when there are SGP or cross-country races or major marathons. If you swap your date with someone else, please let us know so that we can update the list. Also please contact us if you cannot find a swap or cannot do Sunday duties at all for some reason. It is really helpful to have a water car for Sunday runs it means that beginners can come along and not have to run the full distance and is much appreciated by runners. So thank you to everyone for taking part. Roger Stone & Bryan Tapsell
