1 THE CROWBOROUGH RUNNER October 2011 THE START Following last month s tough muddy Eridge 10M, I don t think anyone was prepared for the crazy conditions at the normally wet & breezy Lewes Downland 10M! Why oh why oh why am I doing this was the most heard phrase (well the cleanest one I can print here!) on a rather unusual scorching October day that made the Lewes 10 an even tougher race than normal. But that couldn t wipe the smile off Brenda (see photos at end of newsletter). Loads of news and bits to be aware of in the Club News section this month so please browse it slowly! 2 EVENTS PAST Lewes Downland 10M, Sunday 2 nd October Just look at that lovely blue sky! Shunning the beaches for the hills last Sunday, ten Crowborough Runners completed the Lewes 10 in sweltering conditions. The testing downland course, with its beautiful scenery but gruelling hills more often greets runners with cold wins and driving rain. But this year it was a question of needing water to pour over yourself to keep cool rather than trying to keep dry. Given the conditions it was not a day for PBs but there were lots of good performances all the same. Crowborough Runners were led in by Kevin Battell in 1:18:02 for 47th place, followed by Roger Stone (68th, 1:21:41), Tony Hufflett (97th, 1:36:25), James Welbury (98th, 1:26:45), Mary Nightingale (120th, 1:31:59, 3rd lady O50), Ian Gowing (156th, 1:38:12), Ron Cutbill (168th, 1:41:04), Steve Hickey (180th, 1:46:00), Brenda Styles (196th, 1:52:01, 3rd lady O60) and Sarah Hilliard (203rd, 1:53:52)" Isle of Wight Marathon, Pastel Pete produces perfect pace pushing on to pull off prestigious prize (aka Peter has a Pacemaker at 60).

3 Messrs Maddison and Welbury bought a ticket to Ryde having signed up for the 55th Isle of White Mareathon in the 125th anniversary year of Ryde Harriers. When I told Jeff we were doing it he said if it had been the first marathon he'd ever have done he wouldn't have done any other marathon in his life. It's billed as the toughest UK road marathon. The start was in Ryde and one lap of the boating lake later and once past the Hovercraft port we climbed for what seemed like most of the race! (See course profile below). It was warm, sunny and windy in parts with a hard breeze as we headed south west and especially on a long drag between 10 and 11 before we turned east and along the spine of the Island towards Shanklin turning north and up another steep hill at 20. The last hill is another long drag between 23 to 25 with a steep downhill in the last mile to the finish. A lot of the course seemed to be on busy roads which wasn't so good. The runners also got quite strung out and going through one housing estate I asked Peter if we were going the Wight way, but the best thing was Peter won the 1st Male Vet 60 slot, was awarded a trophy (now in full view in his lounge for everybody to see) and a 20 Argos voucher (assisted by his Pacemaker!) (4.09) JTR (Come off it James you got a nursery kid with a crown to knock this up for you! Ed) Hove Prom 10k, Sunday 18 th September 2011 Well done to Maggi Bradgate finishing in 59.1.

4 New Forest Marathon, Sunday 25 th September Jeff did 4.46 after hardly any training! See marathon details at Liverpool Marathon, Sunday 9 th October Club Chairman John reported that he completed the Liverpool Marathon on Oct 9th in 3.55 in preparation for Nice in late November and he didn't even get his shoes, kit or medal nicked!! Apparently the weather was "inhospitable" as John put in politely or as they say on Merseyside it was "shite". Liverpool is a scenic undulating course starting on the Wirral heading north for 6 miles then back along the bank of the Mersey with the iconic skyline to your left. It was quite blustery to say the least so going into the Mersey Tunnel was a relief essentially a mile downhill then a mile up. The drumming band and noisy spectators were a highlight emerging into the daylight again. There was another big hill at 16/17 which was hard but which you get to run down again at which was great heading towards the finish by which time the rain was coming down hard. A great training run as an appetiser for Nice in 6 weeks! Salomen Kielder Marathon, Sunday 9 th October Our Fran (Nelson) completed a course billed as the most beautiful marathon course in England in Check out the attached as the photos of the course look fantastic it's a bit further round the lake than Bewl!! It's a spectacular and inspiring course barely leaving the shores of Kielder Water. It's on my list now! 6 OTHER EVENTS AHEAD Brighton Phoenix Races, Sunday 13 th November Brighton Phoenix is holding our races on 13th November which is predominately kids races with a adult mile race with cash prizes. CROWBOROUGH JUNIORS END OF 2011 SEASON Another season comes to an end and we would like to thank you for your on going support despite the bad weather. We resume Tuesday April 17th 2012, at Goldsmith s track again. In the meantime we would appreciate your support with the Junior Runners water station at the Club s annual 10k race on Sunday 6th November, 10am start from Beacon School. Juniors help with pouring and giving out cups of water as the runners go past the Green Lane School entrance and with giving out medals at the finish. Please let me know if you can help.
