2 EVENTS PAST Beachy Head Marathon, Saturday 22 nd October Ironman Dave Hynes gets his first notch on his tough off road XC Marathon belt with a time of 4:44:51. Venice Marathon, Sunday 23 rd October Name: EDMONDSON, TANYA Time: 04:05:36 Place in age (F60) 3rd The start was somewhat chaotic but I soon found some nice Italian runners to chat too. I decided to run with the 3.50 pacers and kept with them until I had my usual restaurant stop at 10m and then managed to keep in sight of the 4 hr balloons until the bridge. It was a beautiful day, ideal conditions and i just loved the last bit running over the bridges and round St Marks. The girls gave me cheer at 42k and I crossed the line on 4.08 but my chip time was 4.05 and amazingly I made 3rd out of 17 in the over 60 s!!!!! I spent an hour wandering back, stopping to watch the runners and having a cup of tea en route back. It was just a great event. Tanya (Very well done with getting 3 rd place in age group. Ed) Snowdonia Marathon, Sunday 30 th October Not content with the challenge of Kielder Marathon a few weeks ago super Fran took on the might of Snowdon and the infamous Welsh weather completing the run in 4:33:46 in horrendous rainy stormy conditions and she is mad enough to want to do it again! Barns Green Half Marathon, Sunday 30 th October Seven Crows made the journey to Barns Green for the annual half marathon on a day that the weather changed after a fine spell. Although it was quite warm for the first few miles, it soon started drizzling and raining steadily OK for running but not for standing around chatting at the end. Those of us who ran were reminded that it is not a flat course since there are quite a number of undulations, which of course seem to become more difficult towards the end of the race. Seasoned marathoners John and James kept up a steady pace but most of the rest of us found the second half significantly slower than the first as we tired. Bryan was first home and had to push at the end since he had stated before the start that "It is not worth turning up if you cannot run the race in under 1:35" and only

3 just squeaked in under his proposed limit. Well done also to Sarah for beating the 2hr mark. 4 ESSXCL WHITBREAD HOLLOW 16 OCT 2011 Lovely blue sky, warm, sunny and no wind. It is still imprinted on my mind, 2 years ago when Whitbread Hollow was so wet with galeforce winds that it blew the numbers off our shirts. What a difference! Juniors Depending on age, the juniors could enter 1,2 and 3 lap races the junior course used the first part of the adult course Lily in her first XC race did very well and came 2nd in the 2 lap race. Jack was 4th, Zoe 10th and Emily 11th in the 3 lap race Jack was only 12 seconds behind the 2nd place runner It is free for juniors to enter The Start Maggi Bryan Sarah Lynda & Louise Roger Adults A great turn-out of 14 Crows along with 3 Waddies, 17 for the combined team. We only missed out on one cat, that was M60, but Albert should be back for the next race. Welcome to Carol and Rod running for Crowborough, also to Maggi and Lynda who are ESSXCL first timers ; they have signed up for the season, I think they enjoyed it! We were demoted to 6th from our initial 5th as a team (after Eastbourne found some more runners) but still a good start. Race attendance does drop off through the season, also we should get more Waddies back for the next race, so keep attending guys, and we will move up the rankings 'New girl' Carol did battle with Peri, just beating her by 1 second in a surge to the finish line while 'new man' Rod, appeared to be treating the race as a social networking opportunity, running round with a new friend, a man from Heathfield runners, they finished together, 45-43; glad to report that they were NOT holding hands when they crossed the line.

5 Bryan thought he had it in the bag as the first Crow home, he looked behind at the start of the third lap and couldn't see any opposition. He was quite content on what he thought was a victory lap, turned round at the last corner to check, to be met with Kevin saying 'no point looking over there, I'm right behind you'. Despite Bryans, best efforts Kevin past him on the final run in! Well done Kevin! Everyone has been very complimentary (except for a slightly grumpy Seaford Strider who told me that his team should have been 1st team correctly it would seem!) the accordion was a hit! It never ceases to amaze me how much behind the scenes organisation that the event requires really well done all I think this one was the best in recent years. Good feedback about the race HQ and facilities and enthusiastic marshalls. The whole club really pulled together and it was great to be part of the team.

9 A Note from Chief Marshalls Lou & Dave Dear Marshalls On behalf of Dave and myself, thank you all very much for all you did to make yesterday's 10K road race such a success. We have already had feedback from several runners who said it was a well organised race, and the marshalls were very enthusiastic, cheered the runners on, and encouraged them around the course. Brenda, please could you pass on our thanks to your lovely friend who kindly played her accordion, and gave many of the runners a real spring in their step along Green Lane. Dave and I certainly enjoyed what we heard! See you all soon. Lou and Dave Minutes of Meeting CLUB AGM, Monday 26 th September Included at end of newsletter. 14 CROWBOROUGH RUNNERS Minutes of the Annual General Meeting held on 26 th September Matters arising from minutes of the last AGM No matters arising. 2 Chairman s report Chairman Thanks to 10K committee. Ian to continue with newsletter and helping with routes for Sunday run. Ian will also continue with role as Assistant Captain but Tony will take responsibility for Captain of SDWR. Thanks to Sid for coaching and speedwork. Thanks to Teresa, Xmas do, VLM coaches Observation track continuous disappointment. Breakaway Tri Club muscling in on Tuesday night track session. Juniors continue to flourish (led by Mary Nightingale). Roger organised another successful winter season of cross country. 3 Club Secretary s report Ashley confirmed that he wished to stand down but would be happy to carry on until a replacement was found. Two Virgin London Marathon club places had been secured. Ashley explained briefly about the Club place rules & draw for the benefit of new members. 4 Treasurer s report Annual Accounts year to 31 August 2011 (see attached worksheet) Current ac funds include 700 sponsor monies for 10k event held over from 2010 and 400 cheque to Beacon College hire for 10k not yet debited, so actual available cash in current ac is as at 31/8/11. Cash outflow for year is This is a difference of 193 from loss of 1600 due to timings of receipts/payments eg XCR profit 115 cr 3/9/11. Loss for year 1600 due mostly to lack of contribution from 10k race 2010 which was cancelled twice due to adverse weather. Race usually adds c 2k to profit from race entries, catering, raffle. Tshirts (cost c 2800) will be used for 2011 race for which entries now coming in was tfd 11/4/11 from reserves( bank deposit ac) to current ac with approval of Committee and this will be put back as soon as cashflow allows post 10k race ( 9/11/11). Subscriptions is both senior and junior section, total 188 up on Junior section expenditure 833- incl capex c 400 for new storage unit( one-off expense and v worthwhile) and Beacon track hire.

15 We did have to refund 175 of Sport England grant 400 rec d 2010 as only spent 225 on equipment in eligible period. This refund was more than offset by NatWest grant 250 paid last autumn which the Club was awarded to match Sarah s voluntary time in role as Treasurer and junior level 1 coach. Sundries include: AGM, marketing, mileage. Training expense 692 incl 332 for First Aid course and 2 new level 1 coaches trained- Alan Dodd and Dave Hynes. SDW relay almost broke even this year- individual entry cost was raised to achieve this. Xmas Dinner and Marathon coach subsidy similar to Cash held is at lowest point since 2004/6 when peaked at 10k but is likely to build back up to c 6k again by 2012 from membership fees and 10k income. Member retention and growth is important as is all other fundraising. Wider discussion regarding viability of club finances and debate on subscriptions agreed. Annual subscription suggested by Sarah to remain as current Majority agreed. Adult Membership remains at 18, 40 family, Junior 18 plus 5 affiliation. Social is same at 6 pp. Action taken for the next committee meeting( December/early 2012?) must consider the outcome of the 10k race finances and other income/costs and look at new income generating ideas- Sarah will prepare an income and expenditure forecast for rest of for the meeting. Concerns expressed regarding the 10K race shirt stock will be only partly used and we shall need to find a way to sell it or it will be worthless. 5 Captains report Sharon invited suggestions for additional Wednesday night runs. Sharon advised that the new club jackets had finally arrived and she had various sizes in stock. A bargain at only 30! 6 Cross Country Manager s report Roger Stone / Cross Country Manager reports...there was really good participation in the season though as usual it tailed off slightly towards the end : the combined Crowborough/Wadhurst team has more than 15 runners at every race except the last (when there were 14) only just missing out on enough female runners at our own Ashdown Forest race and at the last race. Overall 20 different Crowborough members ran at least one race. The result was an excellent 3 rd team place, the best in 9 years I have been competing so I will hand over as manager on a high note. Well done to everyone who ran since it is always a challenge for each runner. Our individual prize winners this year were...mike Page, 1 st overall male & senior male, Albert Kemp, 3rd V60 male, Audrey Nioucel, 3 rd senior lady and Brenda Styles, 3 rd LV60 with Bryan Tapsell and Peri Cheal both narrowly missing out on prizes in 4 th places. For the juniors, Jack Hilliard competed in most of the races and had a couple of second places while Zoe Rumens, Jack Dodd, Amy Dodd and Danny Stiller ran well in several races. Our Ashdown Forest race on its new course (or old course for those of you with very long memories) went really well and the course was much appreciated. As usual, a big thank you to all of you who helped out with the organisation.

16 Dates and provisional venues for the coming season are below and also on the website: Sunday Oct 16 th Whitbread Hollow Sunday Nov 13 th Warren Hill Sunday Dec 11 th Plumpton Sunday Jan 8 th Pett Sunday Jan 29 th Ashdown Forest Sunday Feb 12 th Snape Wood, Wadhurst Helpers will be needed as usual for our home race. As last year individual prizes will be awarded based on the best four results out of six races. Entry is the same as last year - only 3 for seniors and free for juniors; enter all six races for and avoid queuing for your number on the day. Thanks to everyone who has competed and helped out in the six years I have organised the cross country. I am handing over to let someone else have some new ideas and I will help out the club in some other way. 7 Junior Section report Mary Nightingale reported that it had been another very successful year for the juniors section 2011 season and the main points were as follows 45 juniors in 2011 More experience and even better than ever. Divided into two sections age 8-11, Senior school +, 3 coaches per section. Elaine notifies when event cancelled due to bad weather.
