1 November 1992 NEXT MEETING - MONDAY DECEMBER 7TH - 7S30PM THE NEST BLOOMFIELD AVE - VERONA HOLIDAY PARTY - $15 PER PERSON HOT BUFFET, BEER & SODA - T-SHIRT SWAP PRESIDENT'S CORNER - Lynda Solomon 1993 will be an exciting year for the Essex Running Club. We will be celebrating our 10th anniversary. We are planning a special anniversary awards dinner dance, the newsletter will contain articles written by members over the last 10 years. We will learn who our past President's were as well as our original members. We will be planning another special event in the summer months. As you know we elected our Board of Trustees for 1993 at our last meeting. I wish to thank all the previous Board members for their dedication and support over the past year. Congratulations go to Norman Kallen, Joe Sczyrek, Art Horn, Lynda Solomon, Larry Hollander, Mike Kantor, George Studzinski, Tom Kelly and Howie Brown. The Board has since met and appointed the officers for President - George Studzinski Vice-President - Lynda Solomon Treasurer - Joe Sczyrek Secretary - Tom Kelly Congratulations to all our officers, especially George. I am confident our members will give him all the cooperation and support he needs during his year as President. On a personal note, I have mixed emotions about stepping down as President. The past three years have been a wonderful learning and growing experience. I have watched the club grow to over 170 members, I have noticed that we have more women involved than ever before. Our newsletter is better than ever, having more of the members writing articles, which I know you will continue to do. But, the best thing that has happened to me being President was getting to know all of you. Believe it or not I must have met or spoken to more than 60% of the membership. I have also made many wonderful, life long friends. I thank all the Board members and officers I have had the pleasure of working with over these years for putting up with my persistence and brain storm ideas. Together, we made many wonderful, fun things happen for our Club. There are a few members whom I'd like to take this time to personally thank. My right and left hands, Larry Hollander, Mike Kantor, Joe Sczyrek and Norman Kallen. Without Karen Mishler, Mick Close, Donna Close, Art Horn, Charlie Lorber and Vince Carnevale, the newsletter would not have survived. Thank you Tom Kelly, Milt Westrich, Diane Travers, Nancy Grabow, Mel Fine for all ERC November

2 your ideas and support behind the scenes. Thank you to all our members who show their support and dedication to our Club and the running community by attending monthly meetings, contributing to the newsletter and participating in local races. I am glad I had this opportunity to serve as your President for these past 3 years. I will miss- it, but it is time to move on and to help the club in other ways. I am sure George, the officers and the Board will continue to move the. club forward with enthusiasm and devotion. I will be there for them and for you. See you on the roads! THANKS LYNDA - Larry Hollander Three years is a long time, but the three years that Lynda Solomon was president of the Essex Running Club seemed to go by very quickly. The reason for this was she was always planning activities and events that made time fly. Lynda showed the kind of enthusiasm that was extremely contagious. When she asked someone to work on a project she did it in a way you couldn't say no, otherwise she would scream till the job got done. Who could forget the wine and cheese parties, the annual dinners, Xmas gatherings, Verona races, bus trips, etc., etc. The president got things done in an extremely efficient way. She never lost faith even though it was difficult getting assistance from the membership. When we lost our editor for the newsletter, she took over without blinking an eye. The newsletter is certainly a very important ingredient to the success of the club. So Lynda, on behalf of the membership of the ERC, I would like to thank you for a job well done. Club members also hope that you will continue to be just as active as vice-president because without you the ERC would not be the same. Thanks Lynda for a supreme effort. NEWSLETTER DEADLINE The newsletter deadline for next month is Friday, December 11th. Anything received after that date will be held for the next issue. Please send all articles, race results, etc., to PO Box 213, Verona, NJ MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS FOR 1993 You will soon be receiving your membership renewal form. Please return it with your membership dues as soon as possible. You will not receive a newsletter after February if you do not send back your dues. All new members who joined after September will not have to pay dues until Jan If new members have not received their shirt, please come to the next meeting, we have one for you. 4 EUROPE TO HAWAII - SUMMER Mike Wojcio Two years ago I ran the Swiss Alpine Marathon in Davos, (Eastern) Switzerland and finished the 67K. Again there are three races - the 28K and 67K start at 8s00am and the 39K begins at lis 30am on the same course. This year when I arrived for the 28K at TsOOam on July 25th it was still cool and many runners still wore their jackets. I thought of the day Lynda Solomon talked to me at the "Trevira Twosome" in NYC this year. She mentioned Larry Hollander ran the Boston Marathon. Well she went on to say it was amazing a guy from Switzerland that Larry met was wearing our "Essex" running jacket! I told Lynda that I left my Essex jacket two years ago on a chair in a restaurant in Switzerland, came back 10 minutes later and it was gone. It was my jacket! What was that guy's name Larry? The race started on time and some people along the way were ringing huge cow bells and the beauty of the streams, lakes, and forest made you just feel how great it was to be alive! My time was 3508:05 and I came in 437 out of 485 runners. Yes, it was slow, but I had to stop and take 35 slides - changing lenses a few times. Even though no Essex runners were there I did see Dudley Healy - a 76 year old master from the Amazin' Feet Running Club in Berkeley Heights at about the 16 mile mark. You would all enjoy this race so try it some time. After running the race I journeyed through Scotland, England, The Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Hungary, and then took a 17 hour train ride to Pontresia, Switzerland. I learned not to ever try climbing an 11,000 ft. mountain (P. Languard near Feta Pischa) with my Nike running shoes on. Luckily, I didn't fall and saw the awesome view of snow capped mountains and the Lej de San Murezzan (a lake) near St. Moritz down below. The next week there was a similar beautiful view when taking the cable car up Mt. Pilatus in Lucerne. If you get a good day it's worth it! After Europe and Michigan (for the U.S. Open Chess Tournament) my visit to 5 islands in Hawaii (the proper pronunciation is the "w" sounds like a "v") was just as wonderful! Aug. 22 was the 10th Annual 1/2 marathon through the Kolekole Pass on Oahu starting at the Schofield Barracks near Wahiawa. When the cannon sounded I thought this would just be a 1/2 marathon with some excellent scenery. After running slowly for 3 miles I encountered a hill that went up 4 miles!? It wasn't, fun, but going over the top with many service men made it worth it. One could see the sublime view of the tropical foliage and Pacific Ocean in the distance. I picked up the pace, since I love running down hill and wasn't allowed to run with a camera. My time was 1:46 - an 8:05 pace. This all means Nancy G., Jill B., Larry H., Joe S., Bill W., and Milt W. can all beat me!? (Bill Mishler could always beat me!?) After the race I flew to the "big island" where they have the- "Ironman" every year. Driving 100 miles from Kona to the volcano (the next day) and hiking 9 miles to the underground lava flow was exhausting. When I walked on the AA lava (hardened very uneven lava) it was jagged and after going out on it about 75 yards it started to cave in. There was a hot lava flow about 20 feet beneath me!? Well I just about hung on for dear life and made it off the AA lava!? The only problem was another 9 mile hike back over rough terrain to the Volcano Park Visitor Center and Museum and then a 100 mile drive back to my hotel. I stumbled on the rocks going back several times, hurt my toes, and finally admit maybe I can't do everything in my running shoes... but I'm a runner - not a hiker! The following weeks I visited Molokai, Maui, and Kauai for snorkeling., golfing, and sight-seeing. I left just before Hurricane Iniki. I could tell you about my adventures there but that's another story. Remember renting a car is essential on all the islands except the city of Honolulu. Yes, it was a great summer! Oh, Milt do you have any money to lend me? I want to do it again next year! 4 ERC November 1992

5 A TOUCH OF NEW YORK IN UPPER MONTCLAIR - Lynda Solomon On Sunday, Oct. 18 in Upper Montclair I had the honor of meeting and listening to some of our most dedicated and accomplished runners. They are Fred Lebow, Gloria Averbuch and Tom Fleming. These greats were promoting a book on running, "The NYRRC Complete Book of Running". With the marathon only weeks away, the timing was perfect. Another running book you say! Well this one contains many of the greatest athletes' words of wisdom. It is actually one of the most comprehensive running books I've read. The book is available at the NYRRC and the Watchung Bookseller in Montclair. But, you won't be able to have it autographed as I did. I wish to thank those members who were able to attend. I am sure those in attendance were deeply touched by Fred Lebow's reading. His struggle with cancer from diagnosis to remission most certainly have changed his view on life. We take our good health for granted. Remember, we are all vulnerable to cancer and disease, but we can all help with prevention. Exercise and diet are a large part of that. I'm glad the running community has events such as this one. It makes you realize that we are athletes and can have the opportunity to meet and talk with the greats in our sport. For those of you who did not attend, you missed a wonderful, inspiring afternoon. BOTH ON AND OFF THE ROAD Name: Greg Koch Birthplace: Elizabeth, NJ - 6/12/63 Occupation: Biochemist (BS).
