1 August 2016 Volume 38, Issue 8 G R E E T I N G S F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N T HOLA! As of July, here are numbers for our membership: Total Households Total Membership Total Gold Cup Participants The past month has been very exciting, or should I say it has been an exciting season of running. Love seeing all the mileage coming in. Some of our runners have improved on their running goals. We had some exciting races in July: Jose F Lopez The Brickyard 5 Miler broke tradition by not having the race on the 4 th of July, Running Wild for Washington Park Zoo had a new venue and great hospi tality by the Stimleys, Nick Schultz-Live Love Give 5K August 6 8:00 a.m. Lowell, Indiana Rotary Ramble 5K August 13 8:00 a.m. DeMotte, Indiana Tour De LaPorte 13.1 M/5K August 20 6:30 a.m. LaPorte, Indiana 10,000 Meters at Sunset August 27 7:30 a.m. Valparaiso, Indiana Lowell Labor Day Weekend 5K September 3 8:00 a.m. Lowell, Indiana Popcorn Panic 5 Miles September 10 7:30 a.m. Valparaiso, Indiana Let us not forget the Extra Mile 1 Mile Challenge (host of the RRCA Central Regional Championship Mile Event) with 568 runners and many spectators. It was a very lively event with plenty of treats. A lot of camaraderie was shared between runners of all ages and experience levels. Job well done by Todd and Heather Henderlong. Thank you for all your support to the running community. Happy 4th Anniversary! When I heard the Lowell Buckley 5 Miler was not going to be held this year, I approached our board members about taking over the race. I learned at the RRCA convention that most of the clubs have their own races. We voted to start the process of making this race happen and happen it did. Mary Moreno along with yours truly were co race directors. We were approached by runners and received positive remarks about the course, refreshments, course marshals, and water stops. We did have a couple of flaws, but will learn from them and improve for next year. We measured the course about three different times. The last time my Indian friend Tim (Arrow) Fealy helped mark the course and thankfully no one got lost. THANK YOU VERY MUCH VOLUNTEERS AND RUNNERS!!! Without the support of the runners, there would be no event! We had a total of 181 runners who registered of which 176 started and finished the race, including our very own Mr. Bob Hooper. VOLUNTEERS DO NOT NECESSARILY HAVE THE TIME; THEY HAVE THE HEART!! (quote from Runners World) As a running club, we also volunteer at local races or make donations. One of the local organizations we had the pleasure of helping was the Girls on the Run of NWI. Some of our members are coaches with the GOTR. We donated two decorated port -a-potties and received a thank you card from Donna Summerville Smith, a GOTR of NWI Board member as well as a Calumet Region Strider. We are done collecting lids for the Lids for Liz donations. We met our goal and on August 4 will be picking up the two benches for the Scott family. We are planning a ceremony and fun run in her honor and will post information once details are final. In closing, I am proud to say I am a Calumet Region Strider with a wonderful Board whose members work well together as a team. Remember "Run to have Fun" Jose F. Lopez,Jr. "Gunny" Semper Fi

4 RUNNING NOTES: BOYER FAMILY NOT ONLY VACATIONS TOGETHER, BUT RUNS TOGETHER By Johnny Gorches, A freelance writer for the Post-Tribune July 15, 2016 When you have six family members in the same house with multiple schedules, it's tough to get everyone together for a family vacation. In fact, one of the few times everyone in the Boyer family does spend quality time together is when they're all running in a local race as members of the Calumet Region Striders. So why not combine a family vacation and running? Beth Boyer helps conduct the Striders' youth running program that her four children Hunter, Jordyn, Reilly and Payton compete in. And compete very well, for that matter. All four kids participated in the USATF Region 7 Junior Olympic Championships last weekend in Muncie, and all four qualified for the nationals later this month. Hunter, a 17- year-old senior at Lowell, qualified in the 1,500-meter run, 3K run and 2K steeplechase for the age group. Jordyn, a 15-year-old sophomore at Lowell, also advanced to nationals in those three events in the age group. She won't be competing in the steeplechase since its schedule conflicts with the 1,500. Reilly, 11, qualified in the 1,500, 3K and high jump in the age group. Payton, 10, qualified in the high jump and 1,500 race walk in the 9-10 age group. The nationals are July in Sacramento, Calif., so guess where the family vacation will be? "We travel a lot and we're always trying to incorporate days for vacation and fun into the long trips," said Beth, who ran track at Penn High School, where she met her husband Chris. "It's something we can all do together," Beth said. But with their busy schedules that include traveling Beth works in sales for a food and beverage flavor company, while Chris handles sales and contracts for a pharmaceutical company the six Boyers don't get to run local events together as much as they would like. For example, they all ran the Buckley 5 -Miler last year when it was later in July. But with the race moving up to Saturday, only three Boyers will be running this year. Chris has to provide transportation for Reilly, who's playing in a softball tournament, while Payton will be volunteering. "Five miles is too much for her at this time," Beth said about Payton. The whole family ran in Thursday night's Extra Mile One Mile Challenge in Valparaiso. The best Boyer effort came from Reilly, who took first in the age group with 6:19.6. Payton was fourth in 9-10, Jordyn was eighth in 15-18, Beth placed 14th in 45-49, Hunter finished 24th in the age group, and Chris was fourth in the Clydesdale group. Three of the kids represented their schools the Extra Mile race helps local cross country programs with donations based on participation. Hunter and Jordyn ran for the Red Devils, while Reilly pitched in for Lowell Middle School. "We've made a lot of friends through running with the Striders and in school running," Beth said. Upcoming races: Beth and Jordyn will participate in another race next week. The Friendship 5K Run is 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wicker Park in Highland. The cost is $25 with proceeds supporting the Striders youth and Road Runners Club of America programs. Copyright 2016, Post-Tribune NEWBIE OF THE MONTH Meet our Newbie of the Month, Ed Caccavale. Back in January, Ed weighed 270 pounds and decided he needed to make some lifestyle changes. His sister-in-law, also a runner, inspired him to start taking dietary supplements and start running. He lost 30 pounds in three months. He then joined a gym and decided to train for a 5k. Over the next three months at the gym and 5k training, he lost another 30 pounds. His first race was the Hub Run in Crown Point where he saw our CRS table. He signed up for the Striders and the Gold Cup Series that day. Ed states, This was the best thing I did. Being in the Gold Cup Series motivates me to sign up for all the races I can. Ed grew up in New Jersey / New York and moved to Crown Point nine years ago where he lives with his teenage son. He is also into shooting sports, mainly Cowboy Action Shooting (you can YouTube that!) and also riding his Harley. Next time you see Ed at the start line, be sure to say hello! 5 JUNIOR STRIDER NEWS Beth Boyer, Youth Runner Programs & Scholarships Weekends in late June and early July were very busy for some of the Junior Striders competing in State and Regional events. Included here are the results from the USATF Indiana State Meet and the USATF Regional Meet. One other national meet that two Junior Striders participated in was the Hershey National that took place in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. At this meet the top eight made the podium and, fortunately, both kids did that in both their events. Jordyn Boyer was the national champion in the 2000M Steeplechase and then finished 7th in the 3000M Run. Hunter Boyer also did well finishing 4th in the 2000M Steeplechase and 6th in the 3000M Run. Unfortunately, this event was not held in the Mid-West this year as in the past, making it much more difficult for people to travel. Many of the Junior Striders participated in a great local event, the Extra Mile One Mile Challenge held on July 14 in Valparaiso. There has been so much progress made by all the kids this season and this was a great way to wrap things up for many. We are planning an end of season pizza party for early August. So please make sure to check you s if you have not heard of the time and date by the time you read this. Thanks everyone for making this a great season. USATF STATE MEET RESULTS We had 15 Junior Striders make the trip to Muncie, Indiana, to compete in the USATF State Meet held at Ball State University in June. Most of the kids qualified in at least one event to advance to the Regional meet also held in Muncie, Indiana, in July. All participants finishing in the top eight advance to Regionals. For some this was their first big meet and a State Qualifier for USATF brings some very good competition. To make things even more difficult, all the younger age groups combined two years, which is difficult especially with the various ages of kids growth spurts. Great job to all the kids who participated with many getting their person bests in events. The coaches are very proud of you. Thank you as well to all the coaches who helped with the kids and to the parents who volunteered at the meet. Following is a list of events showing the results of our Junior Strider participants: 400 Meter Run Ena Gilliana Girls 8 and Under 7th Ani Gilliana Girls th Hannah Geiser Girls th 800 Meter Run Elora Bliss Girls 8 and Under 4th Sara Ramos Girls nd Caleb Chapman Boys st 1500 Meter Run Elora Bliss Girls 8 and Under 2nd Ena Gilliana Girls 8 and Under 3rd Ani Gilliana Girls th Reilly Boyer Girls th Ava Gilliana Girls st Nicole Brandy Girls th Jordyn Boyer Girls nd Abraham Blaesing Boys th Caleb Chapman Boys st Hunter Boyer Boys rd 3000 Meter Run Reilly Boyer Girls 3rd Jordyn Boyer Girls 1st Dylan Draves Boys th Hunter Boyer Boys st 2000 Meter Steeplechase Jordyn Boyer Girls 1st Hunter Boyer Boys 1st 1500 Meter Racewalk Payton Boyer 9-10 Girls 1st High Jump Payton Boyer Girls st Hailey Geiser Girls th Reilly Boyer Girls nd Long Jump Payton Boyer Girls th Hannah Geiser Girls th Javelin Throw Hailey Geiser Girls th Hannah Geiser Girls rd USATF REGIONAL RESULTS Ten of the Junior Striders qualifying at the USATF State Meet made the trip back to Muncie, Indiana, to compete in the USATF Regional. Although this meet is only between competitors in Indiana and Illinois, the competition is very tough. This is especially true in the younger age groups as they combine two years. Only the top five advance to the USATF Junior Olympics. The following lists the Junior Strider participants, along with their events and places: Ena Gilliana (8 & under female) 1st place 1500M Run Ani Gilliana (9/10 female) 3rd place 1500MRun Payton Boyer (9/10 female) 3rd place 1500M Race Walk, 2nd place High Jump Reilly Boyer (11/12 female) 3rd place 1500M Run, 3rd place 3000M Run, 3rd place High Jump Ava Gilliana (13/14 female) 1st place 1500M Run Hannah Geiser (13/14 female) 7th place Long Jump, 2nd place Javelin Jordyn Boyer (15/16 female) 4th place 1500M Run, 2nd place 3000M Run, 1st place 2000M Steeplechase Sara Ramos (17/18 female) 8th place 800M Run Caleb Chapman (17/18 male) 9th place 800M Run, 3rd place 1500M Run Hunter Boyer (17/18 male) 7th place 1500M Run, 1st place 3000M Run, 1st place 2000M Steeplechase Several of the Junior Striders advanced to the Junior Olympic meet and/or had personal bests in their events. Great job to all who participated, and good luck to those who are continuing on at the end of July in Sacramento, California. 5
