SUPER 8 COMPETITION MANUAL WELCOME TO SUPER8 Welcome to the Super8 Competition Manual aimed at helping organisers make the most of this superb competition format for young people. The Super8 competition format was launched by UKA in 2009 and formally piloted by QK and was an immediate success. The quick-fire, easy to follow format was deemed a success for both spectators and participants, and as demonstrated at the pilot events in Cardiff (2009) and Glasgow (2010) where schools events preceded the high profile evening senior matches, ideal for both senior and schools level competition. Super8 has recently been endorsed by the DCMS national competition panel which means it takes its place in the framework alongside other short format athletics competition models such as Aviva Sportshall and QuadKids. In recognizing the challenges faced by staff in allocating time and resource for any sports competition, the Super8 format is team based, can be mixed or same sex and is designed to be completed inside two hours. As well as an ideal delivery tool for athletics, it has many associated benefits including; the ability to develop youngsters in other sports leader qualification s e.g. officiating, enhancing links between athletics clubs and schools, the ability to be applied at both club and school events and another way for the sport to sustain participation and interest up to and beyond Devised and launched by UKA, Super8 is supported by our colleagues at England Athletics and delivered by the team at Quadkids. It is quick, fun and simple to run and we look forward to receiving your feedback on this and other competition formats in the summer ahead. We are committed to support and encourage the inclusion of disabled athletes within the Super 8 Competition Format and have included guidance within this manual to highlight how disabled athletes may be included in local events. As part of this commitment we have developed a simple points scoring spreadsheet currently based on 4 events and 4 simple athlete groupings which is downloadable from the England Athletics website Making competitions inclusive and developing the associated tools and resources is an ongoing piece of work. It is intended that in future additional events will be added to the spreadsheet and that totally inclusive scoring tables will also be available via the QuadKids website.

04 WHAT IS SUPER8? SUPER8 Is an eight event format competition designed as a stepping stone from QuadKids at Primary School level to traditional athletics Is quick, fun and simple to run Is a multi-event team based competition where individual performances are scored using a points table and the winners are the team with the highest cumulative points score Allows all athletes to take part in both a track and field event and a relay Can take place on an 400m tartan or grass track provided in the latter case there are proper facilities for the shot, long jump, high jump and javelin Captures all match performance data via the website, providing an instant dynamic league table of results and individual rankings HOW DOES THE COMPETITION WORK? SUPER8 There are 3 different age categories START (Year 7), JUNIOR (Years 8 and 9) and INTER (Years 10 and 11) Mixed teams of 8 girls and 8 boys or single sex teams comprising 8 girls or 8 boys compete with the scores of the all athletes added together to give the team score More than one team can be entered from each school and club All field events start at the same time. Track events take place in the order shown in the Specimen Timetables in Appendices 1(a) and 1(b) Girls do the track events first and boys do the field events first In a mixed age group competition the weights and measures will default to those of the lower age group Inclusion of disabled athletes Super8 supports and encourages the inclusion of disabled athletes within the existing competition formats and through the provision of a totally inclusive S8 Competition format. Organisers are encouraged to include disabled young people within competitions using the following options as a guide: Inclusion of 1 or 2 disabled young people within an existing competition for non disabled young people Delivery of a totally integrated competition where each team must include disabled athletes whose points will contribute to the overall team total. See Appendix 6, page 38 Delivery of a dedicated competition specifically for disabled young people to include some elements and events of a Super 8 competition as appropriate Especially important at School Games L1 & L2 (Intra & Inter) to support the inclusion of disabled young people in mainstream schools Recommended for consideration at School Games L3 (County) to actively support and encourage the identification of disabled young people in mainstream schools. Most appropriate for special schools and where support exists to identify and ensure inclusion of disabled young people in mainstream schools The term disability covers a wide range of abilities and impairment groups. To enable competition to take place it is recommended that athletes are grouped together using the 4 simple groupings provided in Appendix 5, p37 This table also shows which events are recommended for athletes in each group. England Athletics have developed a points scoring spreadsheet for 4 events based on the 4 athlete groupings NB This is not a formal classification system.

06 THE INDIVIDUAL EVENTS - HURDLES (not recommended for disabled athletes) How is it set up? The track set up for Hurdles depends on the age group and sex of the athletes. All the information is contained in the table below: SUPER8 FORMAT YEAR SEX DISTANCE HEIGHT & TOPPLE WEIGHT TRACK MARKING NUMBER OF FLIGHTS START 7 BOYS 75m 76.2 cm Orange 8 2.7kg GIRLS 70m 68.5 cm Pink 8 2.7kg JUNIOR 8 BOYS 80m 84 cm Black 8 2.7kg GIRLS 75m 76.2 cm Orange 8 2.7kg 9 BOYS 80m 84 cm Black 8 2.7kg GIRLS 75m 76.2 cm Orange 8 2.7kg INTER 10 BOYS 100m 91 cm Yellow kg GIRLS 80m 76.2 cm Black 8 2.7kg 11 BOYS 100m 91 cm Yellow kg GIRLS 80m 76.2 cm Black 8 2.7kg What happens at the start? For ease of judging finishing positions and recording times there should be a maximum of 6 athletes per heat The start should be explained to the athletes Athletes take their marks behind the start line The Starter will give them the instructions On your marks, Set, Go. ( Go can be a clacker, whistle, starting pistol or arm dropped) It is a false start if one or more of the athletes start to run before the Starter says Go. If that happens all the athletes in that race are recalled and the race is started again. If an athlete is responsible for two false starts he or she will receive a warning, if he or she is then responsible for a third false start he or she will be disqualified What happens at the finish? The Timekeeper will record athletes times The Spotters will record the finishing order of the athletes using their numbers Results are recorded on an Event Score Sheet (downloadable from the QuadKids website see Appendix 2(a) All times should be rounded up to the nearest 0.1 second so becomes 11.3 A Runner takes the results back to the Scorer who will input them onto the computer spreadsheet

SUPER 8 COMPETITION MANUAL 100M, 200M AND 300M How is it set up? The 100m is run down the 100m straight The 200m starts at the appropriate place on the back straight and the athletes run off a stagger The 300m starts at the appropriate place on track and the athletes run off a stagger Ambulant disabled athletes: Individual athletes may be included within a race for non disabled athletes A group of ambulant athletes with different impairments can compete together in the same race Athletes with a visual impairment may need to be supported by a guide in which case 2 lanes need to be allocated Standing starts should be allowed for all ambulant disabled athletes What happens at the start? For ease of judging finishing positions and recording times there should be a maximum of 6 athletes per heat Athletes are allocated lanes and must run the entire race in their lanes The start should be explained to the athletes The Starter will give them the instructions On your marks, Set, Go. ( Go can be a clacker, whistle, starting pistol or arm dropped) It is a false start if one or more of the athletes start to run before the Starter says Go. If that happens all the athletes in that race are recalled and the race is started again. If an athlete is responsible for two false starts he or she will receive a warning, if he or she is then responsible for a third false start he or she will be disqualified Deaf athletes may require a flag or other visual device to signal the start of the race A four point stance is not required for amputee athletes What happens at the finish? The Timekeeper will record athletes times The Spotters will record the finishing order of the athletes using their numbers Results are recorded on an Event Score Sheet(downloadable from the QuadKids website see Appendices 2(a) and 2(b) Times for the 100m and 200m should be rounded up to the nearest 0.1 second so becomes 11.3 Times for the 300m are rounded up to the nearest 1 second so 1 minute 13.7 seconds becomes 1.14 A Runner takes the results back to the Scorer who will input them onto the computer spreadsheet. It is important that in the 300m the time is entered in the scoring spreadsheet in minutes and seconds using a dot to separate the minutes and seconds. A zero should precede single digit seconds i.e For visually impaired runners with a guide the athlete should cross the line first and the time should be recorded when the athlete crosses the line Wheelchair Races: Manual wheelchair users should compete together Athletes should be timed and placed in the order in which the axle of the leading wheel reaches the vertical plane of the nearer edge of the finishing line

08 800M AND 1500M How is it set up? The 800m is two complete laps of the track. The athletes either run in lanes off a stagger and break on the break line or start in a slightly curved line The 1500m starts at the appropriate place on the back straight and the athletes start in a slightly curved line Athletes with a visual impairment may need to be supported by a guide. What happens at the start? For ease of judging finishing positions and recording times there should be a maximum of 8 athletes per heat in the 800m and 16 athletes per heat in the 1500m If the athletes are running off a stagger they start in lanes and remain in these lanes until the break line, this is usually a green line across the track approximately 150m from the start If the athletes are not running off a stagger they are not allocated lanes but start behind a slightly curved line The start should be explained to the athletes The Starter will give them the instructions On your marks, Go. ( Go can be a clacker, whistle, starting pistol or arm dropped) It is a false start if one or more of the athletes start to run before the Starter says Go. If that happens all the athletes in that race are recalled and the race is started again. If an athlete is responsible for two false starts he or she will receive a warning, if he or she is then responsible for a third false start he or she will be disqualified Once the athletes have started (and broken lanes if appropriate) they no longer have to run in lanes but run as close as they can to the inside of the track. They must not bump or push each other Deaf athletes may require a flag or other visual device to signal the start of the race. What happens at the finish? The Timekeeper will record athletes times The Spotters will record the finishing order of the athletes using their numbers Results are recorded on an Event Score Sheet (downloadable from the QuadKids website see Appendix 2(b) All times should be rounded up to the nearest 1 second so 2 minutes 45.7 seconds becomes 2.46 A Runner takes the results back to the Scorer who will input them onto the computer spreadsheet. It is important that the time is entered in the scoring spreadsheet in minutes and seconds using a dot to separate the minutes and seconds. A zero should precede single digit seconds i.e For visually impaired runners with a guide the athlete should cross the line first and the time should be recorded when the athlete crosses the line Wheelchair Race: Manual wheelchair users should compete together Athletes should be timed and placed in the order in which the axle of the leading wheel reaches the vertical plane of the nearer edge of the finishing line.

SUPER 8 COMPETITION MANUAL HIGH JUMP How is it set up? The starting height for the high Jump track depends on the age group and sex of the athletes. See the table on the right: What does the athlete do? The athlete is allowed one practice jump prior to the start of the competition proper Once the event is underway no more practice attempts are allowed even if an athlete is late joining the competition If an athlete is late joining the competition they must join at the height that the bar has then reached Athletes are allowed 7 attempts in all unless before then he/she has failed on 3 consecutive attempts whether or not at the same height An athlete may choose the height at which he/ she enters the competition provided that it is not below the specified starting height All athletes who are attempting the same height jump in order, athletes who fail at their first attempt then take their second attempt and third attempt as the case may be Visually impaired athletes may need the support of a caller and additional practice jumps to orientate themselves SUPER8 FORMAT YEAR SEX DISTANCE START 7 BOYS 85cm GIRLS 85cm JUNIOR 8 BOYS 90cm GIRLS 90cm 9 BOYS 90cm GIRLS 90cm INTER 10 BOYS 95cm GIRLS 95cm 11 BOYS 95cm GIRLS The bar will go up in increments of 5cm. 95cm What does the Field Team do? The Field Team determines whether the jump is a valid jump Normal high jumping rules apply for judging whether the jump is a foul or not e.g. no 2 footed take offs, no diving over the bar All jumps for all athletes are recorded on an Event Score Card (downloadable from the QuadKids website Clearances are indicated by an O against the relevant height and attempt and failures by an X. See Appendix 3 for an example of a completed Event Score Card The Event Score Card is then given to a Runner who takes the results back to the Scorer so they can be input onto the computer spreadsheet

10 LONG JUMP How is it set up? Use a conventional long jump pit What does the athlete do? The athlete is allowed one practice jump prior to the start of the competition proper Once the event is underway no more practice jumps are allowed even if an athlete is late joining the competition If an athlete is late joining the competition they must join at the stage of the competition has then reached e.g. they may not be entitled to a jump in the first round The athlete runs down the runway and takes off on one foot from (or before) the usual take off board The athlete must not cross the take off line. This is the edge of the take off board closest to the landing area. If this happens the jump is a no jump and will not be measured The board in front of the take off board which normally has a plasticine strip on does not form part of the take off board and if the athlete s foot touches this board whether or not it leaves a mark in the plasticine it is a no jump Each athlete has 3 jumps, they are not consecutive, all 1st round jumps are taken, followed by 2nd round jumps, followed by 3rd round jumps Visually impaired athletes may need the support of a caller and additional practice jumps to orientate themselves What does the Field Team do? The Field Team determines whether the jump is a valid jump; see above for information on what is a no jump A valid jump is measured from the point of contact with the landing area back to the edge of the take off board closest to the landing area The board including the plasticine strip does not form part of the take off board and the measurement should therefore be made to where that board meets the take off board The point of contact is the rearmost point of contact with the landing area be it feet, hands etc. All jumps for all athletes are recorded (no jumps should be indicated by the letters NJ in the appropriate column) on an Event Score Sheet (downloadable from the Quadkids website (See Appendix 4), which is then given to a Runner who takes the results back to the Scorer so they can be input onto the computer spreadsheet Visually impaired athlete jumps may be measured from the point of take off using a light dusting of chalk on the runway. Additional safety considerations might be required to ensure a safe landing area.

SUPER 8 COMPETITION MANUAL SHOT How is it set up? The shot put takes place in the shot put circle and the usual rules apply. Information on weights of shot for the different ages and sexes are contained in the table on the right: See Appendix 7 for recommended implement weights for disabled athletes SUPER8 FORMAT What does the athlete do? JUNIOR 8 BOYS 4.00 kg The athlete is allowed one practice putt prior to the start of the competition proper Once the event is underway no more practice putts are allowed even if an athlete is late joining the competition If an athlete is late joining the competition they must join at the stage of the competition has then reached e.g. they may not be entitled to a putt in the first round The competition itself consists of three attempts that are not consecutive, all the athletes throw in the first round and then so on until all three rounds have been completed The athlete putts the Shot from within the marked circle INTER GIRLS BOYS GIRLS BOYS GIRLS BOYS GIRLS 3.25 kg 4.00 kg 3.25 kg 5.00 kg 4.00 kg 5.00 kg 4.00 kg The athlete must not touch the top of the stop board during the course of the putt, must not exit the circle until after the shot has landed and must not exit the circle through the front half. If any of these things happen it is a no throw and will not be measured What does the Field Team do? The Field Team determines whether the putt is valid using standard shot putting rules The putt is measured from the nearest edge of where the shot lands to the inner edge of the stop board. The tape should be pulled through a point in the centre of the circle to ensure that the measurement is accurate wherever in the sector the shot has landed All putts in all rounds are recorded for each athlete on an Event Score Sheet (downloadable from the QuadKids website). If the putt in any round is a no throw this is indicated by putting NT in against the athlete s name for the relevant round. See Appendix 5 for a completed Event Score Sheet The Event Score Sheet is then given to a Runner who takes the results back to the Scorer so they can be input onto the computer spreadsheet Seated/secured Shot: Athletes in Groups 1 & 2 can compete in a seated position from their wheelchair or a suitable throwing frame or stool. Throwing frames are designed around the individual athlete and can be no more than 75cm high. The athlete s chair or frame must be securely and safely tied down using straps and fixings in the ground. Stakes may be used when throws fixings are not available. Ensure that brakes are applied and athletes are stable when no stakes or other fixings are available. YEAR SEX SHOT WEIGHT START 7 BOYS 3.25 kg GIRLS 2.72 kg

12 JAVELIN How is it set up? The javelin takes place in the javelin throwing sector and the usual rules apply. Information on weights of javelin for the different ages and sexes are contained in the table on the right: See Appendix 7 for recommended implement weights for disabled athletes SUPER8 FORMAT YEAR SEX JAVELIN START 7 BOYS 400g GIRLS What does the athlete do? JUNIOR 8 BOYS 600g The athlete is allowed one practice throw prior to the start of the competition proper Once the event is underway no more practice throws are allowed even if an athlete is late joining the competition If an athlete is late joining the competition they must join at the stage of the competition has then reached e.g. they may not be entitled to a throw in the first round The competition itself consists of three attempts that are not consecutive, all the athletes throw in the first round and then so on until all three rounds have been completed The athlete can throw the javelin from a standing position or run up and throw it INTER GIRLS BOYS GIRLS BOYS GIRLS BOYS GIRLS 600g 600g 600g 700g 600g 700g 600g The athlete s foot must not touch or cross the marked throwing line nor can the javelin land outside the javelin sector, if either of these things happen it is a no throw and will not be measured What does the Field Team do? The Field Team determines whether the throw is a valid throw using the usual javelin rules, e.g. the athlete must not cross the throwing line, the metal tip of the javelin must land before any other part of the javelin The Field Team measures each valid throw from the point of landing to the edge of the line closest to the side from which the athlete threw. It is important that the tape is pulled in a straight line past the marked throwing line to a point marked on the runaway that is 8 metres behind the throwing line. This ensures that the measurement is accurate wherever in the sector the throw has landed All throw in all rounds are recorded for each athlete on an Event Score Sheet (downloadable from the QuadKids website). If the throw in any round is a no throw this is indicated by putting NT in against the athlete s name for the relevant round. See Appendix 6 for a completed Event Score Sheet The Event Score Sheet is then given to a Runner who takes the results back to the Scorer so they can be input onto the computer spreadsheet Seated Javelin: Athletes in Group 2 can compete in a seated position from their wheelchair or a suitable throwing frame or stool. 400g

SUPER 8 COMPETITION MANUAL SCORING OF AND AWARDS AT A SUPER8 COMPETITION SCORING How does the scoring work? Each athlete competes in a track event, a field event and a relay Disabled athletes may not be able to compete in 3 events depending on their impairment group. The time or distance for each event is measured against a standard points scoring table and the better the performance the higher the points scored The points from each athlete are added together to give the team score If an athlete misses an event or in the case of a race does not finish they score zero points If an athlete completes an event but records a time or distance below the lower end of the points scale, they receive the minimum 10 point score for that event. The program does this automatically If an athlete records a time or distance above the upper end of the points scale, they will be given the maximum 100 points How is the scoring done? Scoring is done as follows: The Recorder receives the Event Scoring Sheets and inputs all the results into the Results Spreadsheet under the relevant event When the athlete s number and the time/distance they have achieved are entered the program will automatically fill in the athlete s name and assign points When all the results have been inputted the Club Scoresheet ranks the schools and the Athletes tab shows individual athlete rankings Awards The Team that has the overall highest points total is the winner. This is calculated using the scores of all the athletes in each team

20 WHAT IS Super6 SUPER6 Super6 is the modified version of Super8. In Super6 teams consists of 12 athletes (6 boys and 6 girls). There is no hurdles or high jump and there are two relays; a mixed 4 x 100m (girl, boy, girl, boy) and the mixed Medley Relay (same format as Super8). 32 32 APPENDIX 1 Athletics competition for school aged young people - Working to create a competitive athletics legacy Athletics is an exciting, diverse and vibrant sport. As well as the enjoyment and benefits, athletics brings together the core skills of running, jumping and throwing, providing the key elements of almost every other sport. With the 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games in London on the horizon, there is no better opportunity to inspire the next generation to become involved in athletics. UKA and England Athletics provides appropriate activities, including competition, for children of all school ages. We also provide the resources and support required by teachers and coaches to deliver these activities. Chosen to be enjoyable, they help children develop the skills needed for enjoyable, successful and long-term involvement in athletics. The fundamental skills benefit youngsters who wish to pursue any other sport or exercise. England Athletics work fits into a UK-wide strategy covering all ages. This strategy was drawn up with UK Athletics (UKA), to ensure all school based athletes can enjoy a positive experience in the sport. Working together to enhance competition, our partners at AVIVA Sportshall and QuadKids provide short form athletics competition formats that are suitable for children of different ages and abilities. We work with the English Schools Athletic Association, which provides more conventional competition opportunities as children progress through school. We also work with clubs who provide formal league and championship exposure to talented youngsters. UKA and England Athletics work with local athletics clubs to provide support for schools and teachers, as well as opportunities for children. We can put schools in contact with clubs who are willing and equipped to help provide athletics in schools, as well as enable youngsters to enjoy extra-curricular opportunities. By building these partnerships between schools and clubs, we can give children a consistent and high-quality experience in athletics. Through creating such partnerships, we can build the future of our sport, give enjoyment and quality of provision to children across the country as we grow the next generation of athletics champions. For more details see In the schools section of our website, you can download our DCMS competition panel approved Framework for Schools Athletics Competition guide. This gives advice on which activity is recommended for children at each stage of their school life. This guide is also available at

SUPER 8 COMPETITION MANUAL APPENDIX 2 Taking short form competition to the masses! AVIVA Sportshall and QuadKids are two modified competition formats that offer youngsters in their formative years their first taste of athletics. The formats complement each other: indoors during autumn/winter and the early spring months (AVIVA Sportshall), and outdoors during late spring and summer (QuadKids). England Athletics recommends both formats to schools and clubs who want to provide children with an all-embracing, dynamic, fun and skill-based run, jump and throwing experience. The quality of experience a young person receives in the school and club environment is crucial to retaining them in sport. AVIVA Sportshall and QuadKids offer schools and clubs the option of inter- and intra-club and school competition via local festivals, leagues or cluster events. Both formats can be used as part of extra- curricular and community activity sessions. Where appropriate, clubs and schools can work in partnership to provide these formats. Some clubs and athletics networks already embrace this approach to reduce travel time to and from events, and to ensure young people get a more rounded experience of the sport in their formative years. Formal athletics can be difficult to organise with limited time, facilities and expertise available to run it safely. AVIVA Sportshall and QuadKids offer a fun, dynamic and safe solution to this problem. Where Does Super8 fit into this framework? Super8 is an outdoor competition format aimed at bridging the gap between introductory outdoor short format competition models such as Quadkids (aimed at Key stage 2) and the traditional athletics pathway provided by the English Schools Athletic Association (ESAA see below) Super8 is aimed primarily at youngsters in secondary education between the Key Stages 3 and 5. Like AVIVA Sportshall and Quadkids, Schools Super8 can be delivered in both the school and club setting. The English Schools Athletic Association (ESAA) The ESAA s competitions are well established, globally respected and offer a tremendous experience for youngsters. The ESAA has a long history of its championships, cup and representative competitions helping athletes in their progression from enthusiastic school children to successful seniors. Many of our great athletes have fond and exciting memories of English Schools competitions, even if some their successes did not begin until later in their careers. We are delighted to be working with ESAA to improve access to traditional athletic competition for young people across England.

34 Athletics 365 Get Better, Get Recognised, Get Rewarded Athletics 365 is an exciting new club syllabus from England Athletics. It s designed to help coaches and young athletes in clubs develop a successful and enjoyable future in athletics. What is Athletics 365? Athletics 365 is a multi-event, development programme for young people which is shaped by the recently launched UK-wide Athlete Development Model. The programme introduces athletes to the fundamental skills of athletics, which are vital in every sport. It is aimed primarily at 8-15 year olds, but the resources can easily be adapted for younger athletes. Athletics 365 focuses not only on how fast someone runs, or how far someone jumps or throws but, more importantly, on developing the technical skills involved in running, jumping and throwing, with the aim of realising full potential and moving like a champion! The programme also looks at an athlete s physical, mental and emotional development, as well as lifestyle and social considerations. There are nine progressive stages, each of which provides athletes with new and more difficult challenges appropriate to their level of development. This encourages athletes to learn all the skills and events of athletics, while reinforcing the importance of a good allround skill base. The Athletics 365 stages are similar to the martial arts belt system with different colours denoting an improvement in skills. England Athletics firmly believe that Athletics 365 will help young people develop the skills and confidence to excel not only in athletics, but in other sports and life pursuits. To find out more about Athletics 365 at

SUPER 8 COMPETITION MANUAL APPENDIX 3 Skills for teachers and leaders AVIVA Elevating Athletics is a set of resources designed to place running, jumping and throwing at the heart of school physical education. It supports teachers in delivering athletic activity in an inclusive, exciting and engaging manner. AVIVA Elevating Athletics is primarily used in a school setting but can also be used by club leaders involved in running club junior or induction level groups. It will help to develop running, jumping and throwing skills in young people, which can then be used in both Sportshall and QuadKids competitions. If you would like to attend an Elevating Athletics course, please contact our education and customer services team at England Athletics.
