Steve O Brien Montreal Wow! What incredible results! I guess lots of things and people get better with age! Way to go, Canadian team! Cheers,
Faune Johnson, B.C. Great stuff! Congrats to all who competed downunder. RICHARD PARKINSON Toronto As I was 2 weeks in a campervan in NZ before the Games, I went from X-C to Sydney to Adelaide to see a friend, then back to Sydney 5 days later. At Sydney Airport on Oct. 7th, I met the World Games welcoming people that explained me a little about the train to Olympic Park. I thought to go there first to get my accreditation and then, able to travel free to my hotel. The problem is that many people had the same idea; I waited exactly 3 hrs and 3 min. to have my picture taken in a long queue almost circling the whole Games Center. I stopped complaining about that lost time when someone told me he had waited 5 hrs!! Another waiting line (1 hr 42 min.) on the Sat. 10th to get my chip for the 10k road race the next day. I must add that, despite waiting, I never saw people criticizing the organisation without a smile. Much enthusiasm there and all were friendly as ever (of any of the 28 sports of course). We were told that we were part of the history at the Opening Ceremonies as potentially 45,000 people (athletes and accompanying persons) were marching in the 2000 Olympic Stadium. Grandiose!!!!!!!!!! I found very relaxed and pleasant people all the officials and volunteers (much more than in Finland); a little group of us appreciated a lot the enjoyable atmosphere all around. Great Games!! Gaëtan Breton Sherbrooke PQ Here are a couple of pictures from the 200 metre finals in which Wolfgang, Marcel and I competed. I was pleased to do well as I had only done four track workouts since I broke my leg at the beginning of the year. Unfortunately, I did not have the conditioning necessary to get into the 400 metre finals. Peter Freeman BC (in red) Hi I have recently attended the World Masters Games in Sydney and have made a videos of the opening and closing ceremonies that epitomise the spirit of masters sport (see links below). The event was attended by many Canadian athletes and I would love to make as many aware of the existence of these videos. Can your organisation post the video or advise me on the best way to distribute it to the different masters sport organisations in Canada? Cheers... Paul McGuire Sydney AUS
Neil Chin Aleong had a great idea.a National Masters Sports body of some kind. With 2500 Canadians in Sydney and potentially many more going to Turin 2013, trying to get all the Masters sports associations together at least as far as communications, would benefit everyone. Doug With 28,000 participants in the World Master s Games, you saw accredited athletes all over the city at all times which made you realize how big an event it was. What did surprise me was the fact that there were more registered soccer players than track and field competitors. The Olympic precincts were very attractive but the main stadium was not used as far as I know for any athletic events. However the other two stadiums which were used were excellent. I personally experienced the very enjoyable camaraderie of my fellow competitors whether it was in the line ups to register or before and after an event. The weather cooperated and was just right for my two events, the 10K road race and the 5000m in the track in which I placed 3 rd in each event. With over 800 participants in the 10K race, you were never alone whereas the 5000 track event yielded 15 in my age category race. Overall impressions of the games? Sydney is a world class city and I loved every moment there. Organization of the games was for the most part good with some initial problems. Best perk was the free transportation on any bus, train or ferry around the city. ( I saved about $200 which was approximately the entry cost). The Aussies were very friendly and hospitable. Would I attend another World Master s Games? Absolutely. Bob Glazier Toronto Sydney World Games - I won the 200, 400, 800 and 300 hurdles. The 100 and 200 in 15.98s and 32.30s were Canadian records. I didn't run the 100 although my prelim time was faster than the final time as my hamstring was a problem so decided not to chance the final as it was the day before the 800. My 300 hurdle time in 56.93s was a world record and 6 seconds faster than the previous record. My 400 and 800 times were about 0..8 and 0.5 seconds slower respectively than my world records in the summer. I was in best shape of all year but the wind was too heavy. My absolutely hardest race for the whole year was at the San Francisco airport on the return from Sydney. I had to run hard, it seemed for about a mile, between terminals after 14 hours with no sleep and no warmup, with two heavy carry-on bags to make my connection. I was chasing a young athlete and his teenage daughter. We had to determine the gate number on the run. We arrived two minutes before take off. The security had held me up due to a gel filled roller in my carry on. Fortunately I finished FWOI (finished without injury). Sometimes this conditioning comes in handy. Earl Fee Mississauga ON Cheers I left Saskatoon on October 6 and arrived in Sydney, Australia the morning of October 8 (crossed the international date line) after a 14 ½ hour flight on United Airlines Boeing 747 from San Francisco. I was pleased to see that my luggage made it also after five flight transfers. I met many Canadians traveling to the same games waiting for this flight. I took my time to figure out the best transportation to my accommodation, and to Olympic Park to pick up my accreditation and decided on the train. I decided to head with my luggage, first to the Olympic Park, and that turned out to be a good decision. When I arrived at the Dome, I got to what I thought was a long line to get into the building. And then another line-up to pick up my accreditation, about 2 hours in total. I got there in time to get my picture on the pass. Later their system broke down and they had to issue passes without a picture. That was the beginning for me to get a new understanding of the definition of line-up. By the way, the back packs given out did not compare favourably with the packs from Edmonton four years ago. Our pass allowed us free travel on any of the buses, trains and ferries. The next day I went to the warm-up track and finished my warm-up and light workout just before being asked to leave because the track was not supposed to be open. The next afternoon I went back to the accreditation center for a look and couldn t believe the line-up. It was nearly 1000 meters long and some said it took them five hours. It seems that a lot of the 28,000 competitors from the 95 countries had decided to get their accreditation on the same day.
Since I was entered in athletics (track and field), there was another line-up to get my bib number at the Athletic Centre and to confirm my entry into any events for the next day. In athletics the age categories are five year intervals and for me that was The bib numbers were prefixed with each person s age group i.e and that was an excellent idea. The opening ceremonies were held in the ANZ stadium where the 2000 Sydney Olympics were held. The famous track had been removed. Another pain staking long line-up and march of each sport into the stadium. I had entered eight events based on the initial schedule. Well with all the entries the schedule had to be revised and that messed me up somewhat. Sunday on the first day of competition my first event was pole vault followed very soon after with the steeple chase. In the Edmonton competition the organizers provided some poles. Here I had to arrange before arriving to rent a pole as I thought shipping my pole would be expensive and a PITA. The couple I rented my pole from were very good and even gave me a helpful coaching session as part of the package. We just finished the pole vault (second place) when it started to rain. The rain let up just before the start of the steeple chase (fourth place). For the rest of the week there was no more rain, but the temperatures were cooler than what I had planned for, C max., and there were days when the wind was strong and gusty. All that jumping so close together, and slipping in the slimy water jump earlier before the race, was not good as my lower back was sore for the rest of the meet, but I am not using that as an excuse. Tuesday the third day of competition I had the pentathlon (long jump, javelin, 200m, discus,1500m) and the 800m final. There were a lot of cancellations and some of my events did not have any heats and went straight to the final. The organization of the pentathlon could have been much better. We were given the start time of the LJ and escorted from the call tent to the LJ pit. Apparently there were tentative start times for the other four events but we the competitors were not told of these times or where we should meet (which track Athletic Centre or Warm-up or where at the tracks). This caused a lot of confusion. However, I was able to fit my 800m final race in just after I had run the 200m in the pentathlon and just before the discus. I had a chance to finish much higher (fourth) than what I did but it didn t happen. The 1500m in the pentathlon is my best event and I was out in front of the other competitors by nearly a full minute but I had to settle for fourth place overall. I remember well the wind gusts in this race as I rounded the back corner each time (3 ¾ x 400m laps). The gusts were so strong that I felt that I was being held in suspension. Wednesday was a competition rest day for us. Up early, on the train, and down to Sydney Harbour. We walked over the famous Sydney Harbour bridge, visited the Opera House, took a ferry ride to the zoo, met with a friend who lives in Sydney, and then walked through the Royal Botanic Gardens. The next day Thursday was the 5000m race and there was a good turnout with 22 runners. I didn t do as well as I had hoped and ended up in eight place. Right after was the 400m heats; I won my heat and advanced to the final. The next day Friday in the 400m final, I tried to keep up with the other two faster runners and nearly blew my third place finish. In the evening my Sydney friend toured us through his assembly facility and then treated us to supper. Saturday in the 1500m final the other runners were just too good and I ended up fifth. Sunday the last day was the 300m hurdles and the 4 x 400m relay events. I had a good hurdle race and lost second place to Derek McCune by 0.1 seconds. I thought the announcer and display board at the Athletic Centre were both excellent. The 400m relay team was made up of all Canadians and with our combined ages we were in the oldest category We got second place with an Aussie team beating us and another Aussie team in third place. It was an opportunity for two of our team members to go home with their first medal of the meet. I ended up with four medals 2 silver and 2 bronze. On the last day we had planned to go to the closing ceremonies. By the time we had finished supper it was getting late and we decided not to go. Well I heard at the airport on the way home that only eight thousand people were allowed at one time to be in the closing ceremony area, and all others had to wait outside until someone left. You guessed it another long line-up. Sydney and surrounding area are huge and a wonderful place to visit and vacation. Their transportation system, bus, train and ferries are top notch. Some other highlights and observations. Olga, Earl Fee and Barrie Dargie all had excellent performances at this meet as probably others that I did not watch. Talking with Earl, I found out that he was born
here in Saskatchewan and lived in the town of Elstow which is the next village down the highway from where I live at Clavet. 4X400m Relay - Barrie Dargie, Marcel D Eon, Doug, Neil Wakelin (highest combined age group 240+) I ran two races with American Larry Barnum, 400m and 800m. Larry was just recovering from knee surgery (he wore a knee brace during practice) and wasn't up to his usual performance level. He was still faster than me in the 400m but didn't do well in the 800m. About a quarter way through the 800m race, he cut in front of me and I had to pull up or otherwise spike him. He shortly moved out of the way and I never saw him again until after the finish. He later apologized for cutting in. We had to scramble to find 4 healthy runners for the 4 x 400m relay team and I asked Larry if he was interested. At first he said yes but his wife next to him said no. So no it was. Some of the volunteer officials were not perfect. In my 12 1/2 lap 5000m race I had 3 laps to go but the official at the finish line showed 4 on the card (the persons keeping track of the lap counts screwed up) As I passed by I held up 3 fingers and yelled three. Same on the next lap... the card showed 3 and I held up two fingers and yelled two. Same on the next lap... the card showed 2 and I held up one finger and yelled one. By the time I got to the finish line they had it straightened out. There was no way I was running a 13th lap for no reason. However, the poor Russian runner ahead of me was now told to do an extra lap. As he passed the finish line the Russian was waving his hands, shaking his head and probably uttering some Russian swear words. With my help the officials got it straightened out. It was a pleasure to see Bill Collins from the USA run in the 100 and 200m. What a smooth fast sprinter. Then there was this 85 something South African man who ran the 200m in seconds... amazing. I watched the women's 65++ combined 5000m race walk. I thought the officials were hard on these old women. A lot of them got DQd. And boy did these women protest. One of the younger women should have been DQd much sooner IMO. She was just walking, not race walking, just a normal walk... no arm swing, no butt swing just a normal walk. Finally they pulled her off the track. Then there was the women's m with only one competitor. She should have been DQd as she cut in to lane one before the green cones instead of after the cones. Ah so what. Doug Renwick Saskatchewan The Sydney Games were excellent and most enjoyable and of the over 300 Canadians (we did very well) involved in Athletics, it seemed like every other person was from Edmonton! The Athletics meet was well run and, as we left Sydney, there was a big festival going on The Whiskey Fest. Maybe that s the answer! Bill E Thompson Hamilton ON
M45 200m Medalists D Lee Provo (2nd), Andre Francois (1st), Michael Kountze (3rd) photo courtesy Andre Francois I very much enjoyed my recent Sydney Experience. Best of all was watching Betty (W65) capture gold in the 80-m hurdles and in the LJ, get a bronze in the 100 m and gut-out a very good 4th place 200m in heavy wind. Seeing her making new friends from many countries was also a highlight. My goals for the M65 competition were mostly achieved. I was able to better the winning 2000m Steeplechase time from Lahti thanks to being pushed by Australia s Bert Carse (3rd in Lahti), Russia s Vladimir Malykh, Peter Sandery (AUS), and fellow-canadian Doug Renwick. Don Mathewson of Australia beat me in the 800m but I was able to get him back in the 1500 m and get a season PB in the process. Then, our Canadian Men s 240 years+ 4X400 relay team (Doug Renwick, Neil Wakelin, self, and Marcel D Eon) got a silver, sandwiched between two Australian teams, on the final day. Original team-members Dave Dunn and Grant Lamothe unfortunately had to bow out due to injuries but Doug and I were very lucky to get Neil and Marcel to join us on very short notice. I was extremely pleased to have the opportunity to meet so many great competitors (and their companions) in so many sports and from so many countries. It was also great to be able to renew old acquaintances. Our Australian hosts, including but not restricted to, volunteers, officials, and interested citizens, were very helpful and friendly. On Monday morning I managed to lose my wallet and spent the better part of the day searching for it and canceling credit cards, unaware that two Latvian runners had found it on a train and had somehow tracked Betty down at our hotel in order to return it. The Latvians didn t speak English and they didn t leave their names, only identifying themselves as Latvia Sportsmen. Betty and I spent all week looking for any Latvian who might have been able to
identify and lead us to my benefactors so that I could give them a couple of Canadian shirts I taken to Sydney as traders. On the final day we decided to skip the closing ceremonies and went to the Olympic Station for our final train ride back to Central. We wandered down to one end of the platform to await the train and there, against all odds, were the Latvians, Aivars Caklis, and Arno Kirsteins (plus an interpreter and some of their team-mates). We had a memorable exchange of shirts and other Canadian memorabilia, with a Latvian flag and a medallion from the school, where one of the fellows teaches, given in return. The train trip to Central was a blur of photographs, handshakes, hugs, more photos, and an exchange of addresses. After the week of competition we were very fortunate to be able to spend several days with close family friends at their house overlooking a beautiful beach north of Sydney. We got a chance to see a lot of the countryside and Betty achieved her goal of getting to see the 3 K s (Koalas, Kookaburras, and Kangaroos). Barrie Dargie Alberta I loved the trains in Sydney. Most of the Aussies we talked to grumble about them, but we thought they were great. There are something like 28 platforms in Central Station and enormous and 12-car, double-decker -- trains are coming and going constantly. So easy just to hop on and head off to Olympic Park or anywhere else with our magic Games transit passes. In fact, I'd have to say our first Sydney train experience set the tone for the whole Oz visit. We were lost. Just off the plane and trying to figure out how to get to Central Station so we could get to Olympic Park when we got on the "wrong" train. (Sydney has private trains as well as public ones and we got on a private one by mistake.) Luckily for us, there was an ancient Crocodile Dundee type also on the train who very quickly took us in hand. Friendly and helpful like pretty much everybody we met in Sydney, he personally escorted us to Central Station, then carefully explained carefully which platform to go to and where and how to transfer. The language was a bit of a barrier. I'm pretty sure we were all speaking English, but things did get a little confused from time to time. For example, at one point our benefactor said that he'd planned to compete in the Games himself, but a dog had chewed up his hand and it still wasn't fully healed. "Oh, what's your sport?" I asked. "Aow! Klipe ijuns." he said. "Klipe?" I thought. "Ijuns?" Doesn't sound like a track event. Must be some special Aussie sport. Nope. Turns out our new friend is a shooter. Of clay pigeons. Sydney is a wonderful city to walk around in. The Opera House is magnificent. Pictures just don't do it justice. Circular Quai is fun and vibrant. The buildings are a wonderful mixture of the old and new. And the city administration obviously cares about tourists because most cross walks have stenciled signs warning you to "Look Right". (Aussies drive on the wrong side of the road, you see, and that can be lethal for the unwary). The jacarandas were just coming into bloom. Even the graffiti is interesting. There is a lot of it, but I didn't see any obscenities or political slogans (or maybe I just wasn't able to decipher them. A lot of it is very ornate and quite attractive, but I had no idea what it said.) One whole brick wall that I could read was devoted to tofu and tuna. Just the words -- tofu tofu tuna tofu tuna tuna tuna tofu. Another one just said piano piano piano piano piano piano piano. Probably something profoundly meaningful is going on on those walls, but it whizzed right over my head. As for the Games themselves -- what a terrific experience! Yes, the lineups were horrendous and the organization of the track meet a little shaky for the first day or two, but they got the wrinkles ironed out pretty quickly and things ran very well for the most part. The athletes were friendly and interesting and the officials were helpful and cheerful and I had a really, really good time. Betty Dargie Alberta
