2 MMA Welcome to the Christmas 2014 edition of the MMAC newsletter! Slightly less serious than usual, but a little more seasonal, we hope. Our Treasurer, Martin Wilkinson has brought to our notice the quiz designed as a fund raiser for Macmillan Cancer Support. JUST FOR FUN, if you wish, or if anyone would like to submit their answers for a prize a personal donation of 2 is required, as shown. There has been a response to the appeal for volunteers to fill vacancies on the committee, but more are still required. If you feel you can offer your services please contact Tom Morris. Warmest wishes to all our readers. 4 MMA AGM & Annual Relays Advanced notice that the AGM will be held after our Annual Relays on the 26 th April 2015 from the YHA National Forest, 48 Bath Lane, Moira, Swadlincote DE12 6BD at 11.00am. Formal Notice will be in the next edition of the Newsletter. Full details of the Relays are on our website and entries are now open online at: - New Members We welcome the following new members who have joined us since the publication of the November Newsletter MMA 242: Alison Robins Wigston Phoenix: Mary Ross Birchfield Harriers: Rebecca Selvey Bromsgrove & Redditch AC: Ged Naylor Clowne RR: Darren Potter Notts AC: Richard Wallace Manchester Triathlon Club (Notts AC, track): Andrew Parkin Heanor RC: Scott Hazell Coventry Godiva Harriers: Tom Morris 5 th November 2014 England Athletics Registration A word of warning As I mentioned previously, we are going to be using a different system for our online subscriptions and competition entries. A critical part of this is that all competing athletes MUST be registered for competition with UKA, either England (EA); Wales; Scotland etc. This means that your UKA Club has to be paying your registration fee or your entries to BMAF or MMAC will be rejected. We know that around 22% of you are NOT currently registered, which probably means that you are not paying your subs to your UKA Club. Some of you may no longer be competing and do not have to pay the registration fee, if this is the case then it s important to let me know. For those of you competing then please contact your UKA Club Membership Secretary as soon as possible or you may find that you cannot enter our competitions. There are also cases we know of where members have never been registered by their UKA Club, again entries will be rejected. From April 2015 all competitors in registered races will not be allowed to compete unless they are paid up members of EA or one of the other regions. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED Members will be contacted with further details of the new system. Members no longer competing, please contact me at mmac.sec@blueyonder.co.uk or on Tom Morris 16 th November 2014

5 MMA THE OBSESSIVE RUNNER Oof, wow, endorphin rush, mind if I take off my shoes? Looks like the Achilles tendinopathy is back, would you believe, after all those plasma injections, but nothing I can t run through now that the core strength is there. Go on, punch me. Hey, not that hard! No, it s just tender from that last rupture, I ve never felt healthier. You really should just get out there and run. Changed my life. OK if I leave my knee support there it s antibacterial while I flex my calves for a second? Ever had plantar fasciitis? Well, if you don t overpronate, you might be lucky, let s see your supination, oh dear, my tip, never stint on your trainers. Or socks, you ll want wicking and anatomically correct, obviously, for ventilation and reduced friction, unless you re going the barefoot way, great if you can afford the technology. The blood? That s just where I m moving to more of a forefoot from a naturally midfoot strike, the new goal is bounce and cadence. Sorry, that s SPM. Steps per minute, no need to stress about it, the human body was naturally designed to run, but if you can t hit 172, forget it, bear in mind I m competing. Just with Dad for now. When you start, there s this brilliant phone app that uses built-in GPS to customise your music to your SPM s, look at Palaeolithic man, we were never designed to adjust our cadences to Don t Stop Me Now, that s definitely one for your playlist. Though you might prefer a GPS-enabled watch for lightness and immediate data up-loading what? Looks like I just added 4.5 seconds to my 5K time, got to be a GPS fault. See this two-year spreadsheet, that s the exact moment, just before my knee op, when the Kenyan diet gave me an all-time PB. Mind if I do some stretches while we re chatting? One, two, - ow, aargh did you hear something crack? I hope it s not that bastard hip again. No, I ll just lie here for a bit, the Tarahumara Indians don t spend a fortune on physio, could you reach in my rucksack for the ibuprofen? With ack. To Catherine Bennett/Guardian (Roger Simpson)

10 MMA FAUJA SINGH (103) MARATHON RUNNER ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Fauja Singh, 103, former farmer and marathon runner, was born in the Punjab, India, where his father was a farmer. He married Gian Kaur in 1928 and was widowed in He has four surviving children, Jaswinder, Parminder, Sukhjinder and Harvider (his daughter Gurbash died in 1977; his son Kuldip was killed in 1994). After moving to England, he ran the 2000 London Marathon his first at 89. He lives with Sukhinder, who runs a plumbing business, in Essex. Fauja does not speak English so his story is translated by Harmander Singh, his friend and former trainer. I couldn t walk until I was five. My legs were so spindly, I was nicknamed danda (stick). I couldn t even walk a mile at 15. I went to live with my aunt her husband had died and she wanted someone to look after her. Because I had been so weak, I was indulged and became naughty and spoiled. I used to push other children around, thinking nobody was going to believe them if they complained. I worked for many years as a farmer. I spent my time tilling the land with oxen. By my 80 s all was going well. I had bought a tractor and rented more land. In August 1994 there were strong monsoon winds and Kuldip, my middle son, who was living with me, went to check on his new venture a roadside restaurant being built near our house. The wind picked up the corrugated iron sheeting from the roof and flung it at his head, killing him instantly. I was devastated. You love all your children equally, but I had a special bond with Kuldip, since my other children had moved abroad. Friends said the only way to save me was to get me away from the village, so Sukhinder brought me here to forget. At first I didn t like it. I was bored. I m a very fidgety person and can t sit still. Sukhinder s always taking things away from me, like the phone cord, bits of paper, staying stop fiddling. Then I started socialising in the Sikh temples and there were tournaments, with running, wrestling and kabbadi it reminded me of being in India. I used to challenge OAP s to 100m sprints, then we doubled the distance. I started running for charity, for cancer research, 5K and 10K and built up. One year of serious training with Harmander turned me into an athlete. Of course, running used to hurt a lot, but it distracted me from my grief; the fact that it gave me health, recognition and helped others is what kept me going. I retired last year after competing in a 10K run in the Hong Kong Marathon. I ran it in 93 minutes. My best time was 64 minutes, and Harmander thought it was a signal I shouldn t do any more. [Singh s last full marathon was London in 2004; he achieved a personal best of five hours 40 minutes in the 2003 Toronto Waterfront Marathon at 92]. I know I m getting weaker but my mind and spirit are still strong. I used to run or jog 10 miles a day. Now a do the same, but walking and maybe some jogging. I only eat in moderation and that has contributed to my long life. In poor countries, people die of starvation; in rich countries, people die from overeating. If you ve got your health, you ve got everything. Without it, your wealth, bungalow and big car are meaningless. My only extravagance is clothes and shoes. I have 50 pairs of shoes and eight pairs of trainers. I like to look Dapper.
