ROYAL NOVA SCOTIA YACHT SQUADRON LIFELINE JANUARY 2019
you so much Kevin and good luck in your future endeavours. Likewise, we have been blessed to have Executive Chef Don Small with us for the past decade, and as he enters retirement, we wish him all the best. Also getting a nod is Past Commodore Ed Steeves and his Nominating Committee for putting together such a strong and gender-balanced slate for our Board. I will happily lean on their talent as we move forward. photo by: Sue Molloy Squadron Member Greetings from Commodore McDermott Well I have to say I am truly honoured to be your new Commodore and over the next two years I trust I will at least meet if not exceed your expectations it is a little daunting to be Commodore of the oldest yacht club in the Americas. First, on behalf of myself and the incoming Board I would like to thank outgoing Commodore David Stanfield, who has held a steady helm for the past two years and left our Squadron in very good trim. He was assisted in executing his duties by a very capable Board and for that they also receive our sincere thanks. As an incoming Board we know we will benefit from those that served before us. And of course, none of this would have worked so smoothly without our very professional staff whether working behind the scenes in Administration, in our galley preparing great food or front and center in our wardroom, Saraguay House or boatyard. In this, our outgoing General Manager Kevin Hurd has led this team so ably for the past 11 years thank And finally, I would like to thank Barbara Stanfield. I know too well from working with organizations and teams in the past that having a strong partner supporting you is key to success and sometimes just survival. As I write this, snow is falling, and I can no longer see the Halifax skyline from our new home. It is quite fun to be here this winter having missed several winters for work and the most recent two winters as we sailed Triple Lindy in backto-back Sydney-Hobart Races. While it is a little sad that we are missing this year s event we have plenty of mates that are doing the event and we will cheer them on via the Internet as we arm-chair race by the fire with Egg Nog. And don t cry for me, I have the Caribbean 600 in February and St. Barth s Race Week in April to look forward to. page 1
As we turn the corner from 2018, we will ramp-up activities as another sailing season approaches, especially being a Marblehead Year. Co-chairs Mike Simms and Graham Roy have all well in hand and their assembled committee is second to none. Marblehead is always a great time and so nice to see our Squadron family come together in such a volunteer effort plus its a wonderful time to renew our longstanding relationships with friends at Boston Yacht Club. As the winter plays out, skiing, skating, curling and other sports will take the place of our cherished sailing. But on the social front, your Squadron continues to go full out with many events that will help while away the winter blues. Theme dinners, trivia nights & speaker nights are just a few such features or just drop in with friends for a glass of wine and some great food. In closing, let me say that Carla and I wish all our Squadron family, staff & membership, the best of everything in the New Year with nothing but good health, happiness and a sincere interest in all things boating. And if fair winds and following seas also come our way so much the better. Until next time, standing by, Sean page 1 page 2 page 3 page 3 page 5 page 6 page 7 page 8 page 9 page 11 page 12 page 13 Commodore s Greetings in this issue Celebrate the Start of 2019 with our New Year s Day Levee! Andrews Vice Commodore Finance Liz Whyte Vice Commodore Waterfront & Boatyard Craig Miller Vice Commodore Sailing Erin Norwood Vice Commodore Sail Training Jane Gillis Vice Commodore Member Services India White Vice Commodore House & Grounds Jeff Courish PRESENTATION of the MacCALLUM S GRANT AWARD Under the terms of its Deed of Gift, the MacCallum S. Grant Cup is awarded to an individual or a group in recognition of contributions to the enhancement of the name and reputation of the Squadron. This year s recipient, Past Commodore Richard Rafuse. Dick joined the club during Canada s centennial year of An active sailor throughout his 51 years of membership, including participation in numerous Marblehead races and summer cruises onboard Illicit, he has been involved in a wide range of activities and initiatives that have had a significant impact on our club, our members and on the wider sailing community. Dick served as Club Secretary from 1974 to 1977 under Past Commodores Morrow and Surette. He also served as Vice Commodore Waterfront from 1984 to 85 where, under past Commodore Dr. Douglas Dugger Roy, he was instrumental to the installation of the initial phases of our marinas. In 1987 he was elected Commodore and during his two-year tenure, spearheaded the fundraising campaign for Olympic hopefuls Phil Gow, Paul Thompson and Stuart Flinn who competed in their Soling during the 1988 summer games in Seoul and the 1992 games in Barcelona. Dick s level of involvement did not slow down in his post-commodore years. He was the Chair of the Long Range Planning Committee which, during his period of leadership, compiled a very detailed report on the path forward for the Squadron. In addition, he was also appointed as the Squadron CoChair for the 1995 Marblehead race and, to this day, he maintains his involvement through his work on sponsorship. He is the club s primary liaison with our lead Marblehead sponsor, Steele Auto. Throughout his period of membership, Dick has provided strong financial support to numerous projects around the club including our lower pool, the Marine Activity Centre and our initiatives to make the squadron a national leader in the field of disabled sailing. It should also be noted that our deck and ramp structure near the clubhouse patio is called Dick s Deck for a reason; he was the Members at Large: Past VC John Traves, Ben Goldberg, Carol Rogers, Eric Richards, Gregory Blunden, Bill Aams page 3
Annual and Budget Meeting awards and recognitition driving force behind the idea and the fundraising that led to its construction. Over the years, Dick has made a significant contribution to the club we enjoy today and he has been involved in numerous activities that have garnered respect within the larger sailing community: locally, nationally and internationally. We have only this small cup to express our appreciation and to recognize Past Commodore Dick Rafuse s energy and selflessness in helping improve the club we all love. PRESENTATION of the volunteer of the year award Recognizing fellow members whose volunteer contributions go above and beyond, is expressed by the awarding of the Morley G. Taylor Memorial Trophy to the Volunteer of the Year which, this year, is presented to Anne Louise Calder. Below are Past Commodore Stanfields remarks. I first became aware of Anne s contributions during the Clearwater Mobility Cup regatta held this past summer. It was apparent that all the activities going on during the regatta revolved around Anne. Whenever someone had a question or needed almost anything, the advice was inevitably: ask Anne. Co-Event Chair Paul Tingley informed me that Anne became aware of the Clearwater Mobility Cup when reading a Squadron Lifeline article calling for volunteers. Anne appeared at the first meeting organized by Paul and immediately volunteered to take on responsibilities as the coordinator of volunteers and competitors. With over 30 racers and 90 volunteers, she was very busy keeping everyone informed of all the logistics requirements. In Paul s own words: And what really was special was Anne s kindness and professionalism with every e mail. Whether the e mail was big or small, positive or negative, she consistently answered with enthusiasm and proper content, she spent a lot of time on this over many months. As the beginning of the regatta drew near, Paul notes that the planning and questions started to be overwhelming. She handled it like a pro, even taking on more roles. Finally, Anne was on site every day of the regatta, dawn to dusk. Paul confirms that Anne s infectious positivity helped to make the Clearwater Mobility Cup a smashing success and one RNSYS can be very proud of. It is these qualities of selflessness and energy we wish to recognize. In closing, Anne s contribution as a volunteer in support of this regatta, and her positive, can do attitude made a wonderful impression on everyone involved in the event. She was a significant factor in raising our Club s envious profile on the Canadian Sailing national stage and helping the Clearwater Mobility Cup Regatta to be named the Sail Nova Scotia Regatta of the Year. PRESENTATION OF THE SAILOR OF THE YEAR AWARD Past VC Evan PetleyJones had been awarded the Rear Commodores Bowl as 2018 Sailor of the Year. 7 Trustees traditions & treasures Capt(N) Stuart Andrews Club Secretary and member of the Trustee Committee. Past Commodore Henry H. Anderson Jr., NYYC and Honorary Member of the Squadron At the club s recent Annual & Business Meeting, the membership elected three Honorary Members: Mike Mentuck, Past Commodore of the Boston Yacht Club, Paul Tingley, our gold-medal winning Olympic athlete, and Henry H. Harry Anderson Jr. We are all familiar with Paul Tingley s sailing accomplishments and any of us who have sailed in the Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race must certainly have got to know Past Commodore Mike Mentuck; a friend of the Squadron for many years. In contrast to these two well know gentlemen, Squadron members may be less familiar with Harry Anderson. Some of us have had the pleasure of meeting Harry over the years and I imagine everyone enjoyed, as I did, listening to him relate stories of his many experiences at sea and a few from the war as well. I first met Harry in Newport during the 2016 Boston Yacht Club summer cruise. There with three Past Commodores of the Boston Yacht Club, Mike Mentuck, Peter Conway and John Doane, plus Newport Harbormaster George Crowninshield and our own Past Commodore George Chisholm, we breakfasted at the Seaman s Church Institute. page 6
Trustees traditions & treasures During our visit, George Chisholm came across a book on Harry so we both bought copies and had Harry sign them for us later in the cruise when he hosted us for a visit to the Dauntless Club in Essex, CT. The front cover of the book is the portrait painting of Harry appearing in the lead to this article (the book title is The Strenuous Life of Harry Anderson authored by Roger Vaughan and published in 2013). Harry Anderson was first elected as an Honorary Member of the Squadron in The proposal recognized the celebrated status Harry holds in the international sailing community. Borrowing from an article written by Gary Jobson, Harry has been yachting s predominant international statesman for more than 60 years. At the age of 15, he went on his first Bermuda Race. At 17, he watched his family s friend, Mike Vanderbilt, win the last America s Cup held in the J-Class. In 1958, Anderson was involved in renewing the Cup in 12 Metres. As a representative of the New York Yacht Club, he hosted President and Mrs. Eisenhower on the America s Cup race course. For more than 20 years, he was an America s Cup race official and he witnessed the initial loss of the America s Cup in 1983, although it was after his watch as Commodore of the New York Yacht Club. (In 2013, at age 92, Anderson would twitch his moustache at the Cup multihull event going on in San Francisco). He has authored or edited seven books, owned almost a dozen yachts, been a member of 17 yacht clubs including the Squadron (Honorary), the Bras d Or Yacht Club and the New York Yacht Club where he served as Commodore in the late 70 s (he has a combined total of 139 years as a Flag Officer in various clubs). To this day, at the age of 97, he continues his role as a statesman in the sailing world and annually makes his way to Cape Breton where he maintains a summer residence at Boulaceet Farm near Gillis Point on the Bras d Or Lakes. download your copy and register early! page 7
2019 Sailing Dates After a productive Rear Commodore s meeting in September, the sailing schedule for 2019 has been basically set. Most of the dates follow the traditional pattern although there are some changes with the possibility of more as we move through the year. Below is the current list of sailing events, both here at the club and some open events elsewhere. Generally the metro clubs try to avoid event conflicts, or at least make sure that conflicting events will appeal to different groups of sailors. While there are very few boats that attend events outside their home club, we always encourage participation away and remain optimistic enough about the possibility to plan for it. All sailing dates will appear on the website as soon as possible and, as usual, there will be weekly reminders about upcoming events during Wednesday night results. The weekly eblasts and facebook will also contain reminders and updates so keep your eyes open. 10 the joy of racing For those of us that are Sailors, we get it. We love the water and are hard pressed to find somewhere we d rather be than on our boat on a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon in July. However, there are many, at our Club and beyond, who have not yet experienced the joy of getting to the windward mark first on a Wednesday Night race or even just taking in some of the breathtaking scenery on a summer cruise. 9 pagepage 9
We are the oldest yacht club in North America but we also need to make room for the new. We must maintain our history and traditions of excellence while welcoming 2019 and beyond with open arms. It won t be long before another season of sailing is here. Erin Norwood, Vice Commodore of Sailing, and the Sailing Committee are working alongside Race Director Luke Porter and his team to provide another season of excellent racing opportunities while at the same time turning some attention to reminding ourselves why we all love to sail from the beginning - for the fun of it! Whether that s competitive one-design racing opportunities, sailing across the Atlantic or being on the start line for the first time, there s a place for everyone. Today there is more competition for people s leisure time. If it s not fun, we re not going to do it. We need to engage new sailors and invite them in to see what so many of us know already; that sailing is a fantastic sport. Whether you sail competitively or not, there s very little that can beat the sensation of being out on the water, wind filling the sails, harnessing the power of nature and relying on your skills and expertise. Looking forward to seeing you on the water in 2019! Have an opinion on the 2019 sailing season? We want to hear from you. If you would like to see something new or have an idea please contact vcsailing@rnsys.com. Erin Norwood Vice Commodore of Sailing page 10
