1 7/13 Access 1 Class Summary v and Flexibility As Salaam Alaikum everyone! Alhamdullilah today we finished our discussion of status by learning about light vs heavy and flexibility. Previous Class Recordings: (previous class recordings will be stored for easy access on the site above. Simply click on our class to see the list) Homework: Finish the exercises in the textbook (pages 13 and 16) Workbook Ex2 and Ex3 (Answers attached) *Do as much as possible inshaallah. If you are not able to finish, you always have the weekend :) Quick Summary Alhamdullilah we've finished learning about how to tell Status today! We learned about light vs. heavy today and we also learned flexibility. LIGHT vs HEAVY Remember that normally an ism is heavy. This means that it has an EXTRA 'n' sound at the end of the word. All the isms in the Muslim chart are heavy. The extra 'n' sound comes from either the tanween (double accent) or the letter noon. To make an ism light, remove the extra 'n' sound. We learned there are four reasons for an ism to be light, and we actually covered two of those reasons today (1) Categorical negation (2) Partly Flexible isms FLEXIBILITY Our second topic was flexibility. Flexibility has to do with whether an ism can show a difference in status. flexible isms (like those in the Muslim chart) can show a difference between all three statues. Most isms are fully flexible.

2 Flexible isms can not show any difference between status, for example, Musa or dunya. They usually end in alif. Partly Flexible isms have two problems. They have to be light and they can not take a kasrah at the end. Remember the practical way to remember is "U A A" for example: Ibrahimu, Ibrahima, Ibrahima. Partly Flexible Isms can show some difference in status but not all. We learned two kinds of partly flexible isms: Names of places, like Yathrib and Makkah and Arab names like Ibrahim and Yusuf. An easy way to tell is an ism if fully, partly or non flexible is to ask the following questions: Does it end in an alif? NON FLEXIBLE Is it the name of a person/place in the Quran? Usually PARTLY flexible (the exceptions are Muhammed, Nuh, Saalih, Shuayb, Lut and Hood (as) ) Otherwise: FULLY flexible.
