1 Volume 89, Number 6 Though there were many things happening at the club this month, the most impactful for me was our Commodore s Regatta held on April 29. I have to admit, that I was caught a little off guard with all that goes into planning a regatta. I had planned and set up the PRO (Principal Race Officer) for this event months ago, but I learned there is much more that goes into a regatta than selecting a PRO. Thanks to Greg and Chris Hofmann for keeping me on my toes and helping me cover all the bases in this planning. Commodore s Regatta Speaking of the PRO, I cannot give enough recognition and appreciation to Mike Gross for the excellent job he and his team did on this race. The conditions were very challenging and could have gone any number of different ways. To add to the conundrum, He was advised at the skippers meeting that the Mitchell s cove mark was not in the correct position. Without a resolution for this minor issue of a missing mark two of the four courses would be nixed. Mike had chosen ahead of time to use the whaler as

2 Santa Cruz Yacht Club Spinnaker From the Vice Commodore committee boat instead of the Ernie Rideout. This was fortuitous because with the faster boat, he was able to drop a mark at the correct location for Mitchells cove. He hailed each of the contestants to apprise them of the change of marks. Knowing that the wind could change to an easterly, he had designated the finish line to be at wharf mark and had the Whaler on this line to call the finishes. This all worked out extremely well. The whole race was run from the whaler with two exceptional and talented people: Mike Gross and Nancy Beekman. Thank you very much to both of you for a superior job! A regatta cannot be a success without contestants and we were not let down this year. We had 12 boats compete including four large boats: Buona Sera, Merlin, Hijinx and Aboriginal. The race was a Pursuit race or reverse PHRF with the slower boats starting first. We had great wind sailing up and down the west cliff area. The winner of the big boats was Buona Sera skippered by Ed Marez which puts his name on the perpetual Commodore s Regatta trophy. The winner of the B fleet was Sydnie Moore on Nobody s Girl. Jib and Main <181 was won by Steve Niemann on Perfect 36 and Jib and main greater than 181 was won by Fred Molnar on his Santana 22 Schock Therapy. Congratulations to all for a well sailed race! The party after the race was fantastic with food provided by the yacht club for all participants. We had a fantastic spread of Mexican food with burritos and the makings for tacos. We had over 80 people at the party and everyone enjoyed the food and comradery. All in all, it was a fantastic event. Thank you to all who helped and to those who participated. The Spring racing season is in full swing with One Design, SCORE, Lasers, Moores and 505 s out racing around the buoys. The good news is, despite the chilly weather, the wind has been plentiful and sometimes very plentiful. And don t forget the Tuesday night Catalina races which are becoming popular with more boats coming out. These races are informal and fun and you don t even need a Catalina to participate, so come on out and let s go sailing! Thank you to all our volunteers who donate their time to make these races happen. The Club has been jam-packed on Wednesday nights with sailors enjoying the Club after an evening sail on Monterrey Bay. The BBQ is up and running with burgers, dogs and salads from Fresh Prep and the bar is open. This is a great mid-week break from work so don t miss out on the fun. In case you haven t noticed, there have been more members with toddlers at the Club, so we ve installed a baby changing station in the upstairs ladies room. We welcome these young families and our future sailors. Thanks to Steve Niemann for doing the installation. We re also looking for feedback on how our house food service provider, Fresh Prep Kitchen, is doing. They ve been diligently working to provide excellent food and service on Wednesday nights, Friday night dinners and for our special events. Have you been to dinner on a Friday night lately? How about the Wednesday night BBQ menu? What do you think? We re open to all comments and suggestions to make our galley even better. Feel free to contact me (Twosailors@ cs.com) or Greg. See you at the Club Joe Altmann Vice Commodore Barry Keeler Commodore 2

3 Santa Cruz Yacht Club Spinnaker Sheet Rear Commodore May kicked off with a special Friday night, Cinco de Mayo themed, dinner provided by Fresh Prep. We were happy to celebrate all Mother s on Mother s Day, with Fresh Prep who prepared an excellent Mother s Day brunch. The big event for May has yet to come, and I hope you will all join us for the Hoeown May 27th at 5:30. This event has a mechanical bull and backyard style BBQ provided by Aptos St. BBQ. If you haven t had Aptos St. BBQ yet, you won t want to miss this! As summer approaches, and temperatures rise, our thoughts go to those loose fitting clothes and strong drinks. What better way to prepare yourselves for summer than joining us for the Margaritaville party, June 10th. A special Margaritaville menu will be prepared, as well as an industrial margarita recipe that will be sure to put you in Paradise. Parrotheads should keep an eye out for future announcements regarding start time. As always check the website at scyc.org/scyc/calendar for all upcoming social events and watch for the Tuesday blasts. If you or a friend would like to volunteer for any upcoming events please feel free to contact Greg, Jennifer or myself and we ll get you going. Looking forward to seeing you around the club! 4 Santa Cruz Yacht Club Spinnaker Laser Sailing Checkout Saturday June 3rd, 10am-1pm Meet at the Laser shed Cruising News The rain has finally abated, and the sun is shining bright. The cruising group got together Sunday May 21 st for the first dock party of the season on A dock. The weather was warm, sunny and worked perfect! Cruisers and A dock neighbors gathered and shared food, beverages and conversation. Some Score racers joined in after their races. As usual the food was plentiful and outstanding. The only thing this cruiser needed was more sunscreen! Everyone seemed to have a good time. I would like to recognize the generosity of our sailing community. Last Tuesday on our Catalina Race, my jib tore in the brisk breeze. It s a tired headsail for sure, but it was my only headsail except for my storm jib. I mentioned to several Catalina night sailors as well as cruisers at the dock party that I was hoping to borrow a sail for the interim. By Monday I had 4 headsails to choose from! I went immediately to work trying each and every one. I am very grateful to be a part of such a great community! A special shout out to: Peter, Todd, Barry, Steve, Nancy and Matthew. Thanks for the loaners and thanks for your help!!! Cruising Events in July: Monterey Sail and Fireworks raft up! Details to follow! Happy Sailing!!! This class is intended for those who need a refresher in rigging the lasers and want to splash the boat and get certified to take the boats out sailing. We will be rigging the boats and sailing around the basin and up/down the harbor to get a feel for using the boats. Those attending this class also can sign the Use agreement and Liability Waiver and get certified to take out the laser whenever you d like (depending on availability). 7 Santa Cruz Yacht Club Spinnaker Sheet May Racing Report New Corinthian member, Ben Koscielniak, shown with Hank It s been a windy spring on the water for the last few weeks. Late spring storms are believed to have taken out the new Mitchell Cove Mark. A new replacement mark was set closer to shore and inside the cove at N W The Moore 24 PCC s on May 6 and 7 were a great success with 20 boats vying for the Championship. Boats traveled from as far away as Seattle and the Bay Area for the weekend. The fleet encountered nearly every wind speed and direction that Santa Cruz could throw at them. In the end it was Pegasus Motion X taking home first place. Two SCYC boats, Great White Trash and Mooregasm, placed 2 nd and 3 rd and held off Lowly Worm, Scarlett and several hard charging boats from out-of-town in the top half of the fleet. Several Juniors were aboard boats and were able to get their first taste of surfing home from Natural Bridges in 25+ MPH wind. Eyes were wide as the bow waves grew, and memories were set to last a lifetime. Event Chairs Andrew Hamilton, Sydnie Moore, and all the club members who volunteered were great hosts to the fleet and help to make this a memorable weekend for all who participated. Santana Team racing on May 13 tried to tuck in close to the wharf but still encountered shifty gusts to 20mph and provided exciting racing for Team Danger and Team Caution. We had hair raising mark traps and four boats overlapped at nearly every mark of the tight course. Seven races were run before exhausted crews and boats returned to the dock. 7

8 Santa Cruz Yacht Club Spinnaker Spring One Design continued the Spring- Wind-Fest on May 20. The forecast was for sunny skies and a mild 8-10 westerly, or lighter; but crews were treated to as inland valleys started to heat up and draw the cool coastal air and fog ashore for the first time of the season. SC27, Moore 24, Santana 22, and 5O5 fleets had close quarter racing where a single missed tack, jibe or lay line call in the drag race to right corner meant losing several places. Several of the SC27 s used RaceQ s to record their tracks and do post race analysis of the data. You can watch an exciting replay of the May One-Design Races at this link &updatedAt= T01:18:10Z&divisi onid=46495&boat=hanalei&model=&dt= T10:42:06-07: T18:14:09-07:00&ifr ame=true&time= &focus=hanalei&ri val=hanalei%202&tab=fleet&view=auto SCORE fleets were treated to more of the same the next day on May 21 with exciting boat for boat and fleet racing in 20+ MPH wind out around Natural Bridges and Mitchell Cove marks. Gandalf took two more bullets in B Fleet. Pair-A-Dice took two bullets in the revived Main and Jib Fleet, and THOMAS L. Merlin and Buona Sera spent much of the day engaged in head-tohead tacking duels and overlapped downwind. Good luck and good racing to the boats that will represent SCYC in the Spinnaker Cup (Buona Sera, Merlin, Astra, Symetery, and Javelin) and the boats that will go on to race California Coast Cup and SoCal 300 over the next few days (Buona Sera, Astra, Symetery, and Elyxir). 10 Santa Cruz Yacht Club Spinnaker Attention Membership SCYC has had a long-standing cancellation policy regarding Club events for which reservations are required. The reason for the policy is to protect the Club s financial commitment to our Galley operators and our Fund Raising events. The policy essentially states that a party, who makes a reservation, agrees to notify the Club within 48 hours of the event date if they cannot meet their obligation to attend. New Year s and Installation Dinner require 72 hours notice. If the party fails to notify the Club by such agreed-to time the party must pay for reservations made. In certain circumstances there may be a wait list and if we are able to fill your space you will not be charged. Out of courtesy to our food providers and Club Fundraising Events please call the Club office as soon as you know you or your guests will be unable to make it ( is not the preferred method for cancellations). It is very important to do it 48 hours in advance or your account will be charged. Yachting Club of America The Santa Cruz Yacht Club is a member of the Yachting Club of America (YCOA). As a member of the Santa Cruz Yacht Club you have access to their database which lists all the Yacht Clubs, who are members of the YCOA, and a reciprocity guide plus other fun stuff.
