1 Volume 86, Number 4 April 2014 Bear with me friends. While I am enjoying serving as your Vice Commodore this year, it is slightly more difficult to think of interesting things to write about the repairs, cleaning and budgets that comprise this year s responsibilites than it was to write about the parties and social events as I did last year as Rear Commodore. But I digress... We have a long list of improvements for our Club this year, and as soon as budgets are finalized this month, our work will continue. So far, in the wake of a very successful work day, the house committee decided to have an additional work day or two this year, so as Vice Commodore Report to keep current on maintenance, and thereby reduce the load on the annual March workday. Now when I was younger, laundry and dish washing could be annual rituals, but when it comes to taking care of our Club, several workdays each year seems to be the way to go. Our first project is to get the decks power washed and re-sealed. I hope you will keep an eye out for these and other days as this year goes on and come join the fun. Many hands make light work! On a novel automotive note, representatives from Tesla brought a couple of their ground- breaking all electric cars to the Club on Sunday, March 23
2 Rear Commodore s Report to introduce them to our members and give test drives. Interest was high and turnout was good; one of our members even agreed to buy one! Tesla has even offered to put a charging station in our parking lot if the Club is interested (yes, Tesla pays to refuel your car at their charging stations). In April, we are all looking forward to the Commodore s Regatta on Saturday, April 5. And in case you had not noticed, our winter rains seem to have produced about a teacup of water, so please take it easy on the water use when you are at the Club (e.g., mind the boat washing, drink your whiskey neat). Lastly, as I m sure you ve noticed, our Commodore has been away from Santa Cruz for the month travelling in South America and I have been acting in his stead. Though it was tempting to let power go to my head, I managed to avoid driving us into a ditch.... so far. There are still a few days left in the month. So please wish us all well, and extend a heartfelt welcome home to Barry. I know I will be glad to see him! It has been an interesting winter, warm, many good sailing days. The SCYC Social calendar has been full. The Corinthian Crab event was very successful and sold out. Thanks to daylight saving time the season s first Wednesday night BBQ was 3/12/2014. The St Patrick s Day buffet on March 16th was very festive. Thanks to the Schuylers for decorating the table! March ended with a Tesla test drive and Sunday potluck on the 23rd. The Commodore s Regatta is April 5th. See you at the club after the race. Events to look forward to include the Easter Brunch Sunday April 12th, and the children s Easter egg hunt the same day. Sunday May 11th will be the Mother s Day Brunch. And don t forget the Friday night dinners! Chuck Murray Rear Commodore Don Conant Vice Commodore (Mel Phelps with St. Patrick s Day spirit) 2
3 Racing Season is in Full Swing We just finished Midwinters and Homer Lighthall reported that they raced all five months this year. It was well attended with over 30 boats entered. The A fleet winner came down to the last weekend with Shepard Kett coming out the winner. B Fleet winner was Jay Crum, Jib and Main Fred Molnar and Scott Nelson took first place in the Double Handed division. Chuck Hawley was the main speaker for a very well attended Coastal as Sea Seminar. As always he kept everyone entertained the whole time. Thanks to Barbara Booth for organizing the event and the great lunch. By the time this month s Spinnaker Sheet comes out we will have completed the Champion of Champions Regatta for It is the best of the best from 2013 and Midwinter s There will be about 12 boats racing for the honor of calling themselves the best of Barbara Booth was event chair and Beth Gripenstraw and her crew supplies the great appetizers. April is going to be a very full racing month for racing. It all starts with Barry Whittall s Commodores Regatta on the 5 th. This year besides the popular pursuit race there will be kayak races and rumors of a power boat participating in a Predicted Log Race. The Commodore s Regatta is the start of our racing season and this year it s going to be a real Opening Day. There are going to be regatta s every weekend in April and I want to thank everyone in advance who have stepped up to volunteer. Besides the monthly Santana Team Racing, Adam Borcherding will be PRO for the Laser NorCal/505s on the 12 th and 13 th. We are expecting a large turnout of 505s tuning up for the upcoming 505 World Championships in May. April will also be the first of our Spring One Design and Spring SCORE as well as a Moore 24 Regatta that will be on the 26 th and 27 th. On the first weekend in May the Multihulls will be having their Spring Kickoff Regatta. Have you noticed the three new boats in the harbor? Keep your eyes on the SC70, Far 40 and the J 70 this year. It s exciting to have new boats in our racing fleets. Bret Gripenstraw SCYC Members Racing Updates OMAN - Back in Muscat (at the Southeastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula), for ACT 2 of the Extreme 40 Sailing Series, Morgan Larson and team Alinghi, once again had a podium finish in third. This is their second podium finish in the Series so far, and it s that consistency that keeps them so competitive! CANADA - Dwayne King continued as downwind trimmer/grinder, on the Anacortes, (a Washingtonbased Perry 65, ICON) in the Patos Island Race, hosted by the Sydney North Saanich Yacht Club in British Columbia. The Patos Island race was 67 Nautical Miles and they sailed the course in 10.5 hours winning their class by more than 2 hours corrected. CALIFORNIA Chris Watts was continuing his SF Bay racing this past month as tactician on the 3
4 TNT. They raced the last midwinters at Golden Gate YC and they almost pulled off it off to win the series but ended just shy, getting third in the Series. If you have info on where club members are racing, please feel free to pass along details to Ellen Kett Recreational Boaters of California Thanks to all the SCYC members who generously donated to the RBOC along with their 2014 annual SCYC membership renewals. Over $1,600 has been received so far which will be used by the RBOC in their never-ending work to protect boater s rights. We will be drawing names for the free SCYC dinner for two at the March SCYC Board meeting. RBOC is keeping very busy on the topic of Regional Water Board s attempts in Los Angeles and San Diego to regulate copper antifouling paint. While RBOC was successful last year to stop unsound state legislation on copper antifouling paints, now 2 SoCal Regional Water Quality Control boards are attempting to restrict copper paint in harbors based on improper analysis. See more details at In December, Boat US and RBOC spoke at EPA hearings on Renewable Fuels about ethanol in gasoline. RBOC is concerned that the increased ethanol in gasoline being proposed by EPA could damage marine engines. Keep up-to-date with RBOC s work by reading the latest Winter 2014 Boater Brief. Go to org and click on the Issues tab. If you use Twitter, RBOC sends alerts and you can sign up for these at Contact Lorenzo Rota if you have any questions about RBOC. Lorenzo Rota RBOC Delegate Cruising Committee Call to all Runners and Walkers! All the cruising group is hosting a really cool event called the Wharf to Wharf raft up on July 26 th. The idea is to have a raft up party the night before the Wharf to Wharf 10K and leave some boats there so after running (walking) the Wharf to Wharf, you can sail back to Santa Cruz. Anyway the point here is that the Wharf to Wharf sign up starts April 1 st and fills up within a few days. As such you need to sign up soon!!!! The other fun and new activity is having a Lunch at the Pacific Sail Expo on Friday April 11 th 11:30 1:00. The idea is for folks to get together and show off all the great stuff they just bought etc. This is being organized by Rick and Dori Green (Rick_dorie_green@yahoo.com). Hope to see you there!! 4
